It has been an injury
plagued season for Coach
Miller’s Lady Trojans, but
despite the losses of many of
the sophomores, including
two All-Region defenders,
they have fought their way
into playoff contention. Now,
with only a pair of important
Region IX matchups to go, it is
crunch time for the Trojans.
TSJC is 8-6-1 overall and
5-4-1 in the region and will
host Northwest College and
Sheridan this Friday and
Saturday at Central Park. A
pair of wins should put the
team squarely into the playoff
picture, while a pair of losses
may leave them on the out-side
looking in.
The past ten days have
seen the Trojans on the road
for five games, four of them
against conference foes. On
October 3, they faced Western
Nebraska earning redemp-tion
from an earlier season
loss and a huge road win.
Late goals from Braelah Mc-
Ginnis and Erica Briseno,
both on assists from Hilda
Romo, sealed the 2-0 victory.
The next day the Trojans fell
to No. 11 Laramie County
3-0. The biggest setback from
the game in Cheyenne might
have been the loss of Briseno
to a collarbone injury.
The following Wednesday,
the Trojans were in La Junta
to face the No. 5 Rattlers.
Otero caught the Trojan back-line
off guard and took an ear-ly
lead from a Megan Chan-dler
long range shot. Otero
added one in the second half,
but Manuela Porras picked
up a short pass from Romo
inside the six and found the
net to cut the deficit 2-1. Otero
scored again late to seal the
3-1 win.
This past weekend the
Lady Trojans got a key Re-gion
IX win in Rock Springs
defeating Western Wyoming
3-2. The momentum in the
contest shifted back and forth
throughout the first half as
Trinidad scored first when
Porras again found the net
on an assist from Daisy Per-ez.
Western answered at the
10-minute mark to tie it at 1-1.
Jennifer Hastings, tradition-ally
a goal keeper, scored her
first collegiate goal for TSJC
at the 30-minute mark on an
assist from Romo and Sierra
Valerio to reclaim the lead.
Western tied it up again just
prior to the half to send the
squads to the locker room
knotted at 2-2. “My girl’s
played very tough throughout
the second half, knowing that
a win was necessary, they
played bravely and proved
they are a good team.” stated
Coach Miller. The score re-mained
tied until the 72nd
minute when Romo found
Perez for the game winner.
The Trojans finally
wrapped up the long road
series with a non-conference
game against No. 18 Utah
State University - College of
Eastern Utah in Price, Utah.
Despite a good first 15 min-utes
of play, with several
attacking opportunities the
Trojans could not find the net.
Playing their first home game
of the season, and with a large
and loud crowd CEU scored
off a miscommunication in
the defense. The worn down
squad fell 1-0 to the Eagles.
This weekend the Trojans
will host Northwest College,
in a game to potentially de-termine
the Region IX third
place squad in the standings,
on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The date will also feature the
annual Pink Game. Wear
pink to the game to support
Breast Cancer Awareness.
The American Cancer Soci-ety
will be on hand accept-ing
donations. On Saturday
evening the Sophomores will
be honored prior to the 6 p.m.
kickoff against Sheridan Col-lege
of Sheridan, Wyoming.
The Lady Trojans will then
wrap up their regular season
next Friday with a non-region
game against Dodge City at 6
p.m. at Central Park.

No. 9 Trojans
wrap up regular
soccer season
By Mike Salbato

The Chronicle-News
The Trojan Soccer team has worked their
way into the top 10 of the NJCAA National
rankings. But, the real work is ready to start
as the No. 9 squad will wrap up regular season
play this weekend and prepare for the play-offs.
The team now holds a record of 13-1-1 on
the year, with home games against Northwest
College and Sheridan this weekend.
The Trojans were undefeated before head-ing
into a five-game road swing, but fell to
Western Nebraska in an overtime match 0-1.
They then tied a tough Laramie County CC
club in Cheyenne by a score of 1-1. Against
the WNCC Cougars the Trojans had 15 shots
on goal but were unable to find the back of the
net. In the first overtime WNCC’s David Her-nandez
capitalized on a header, placing the
shot into the lower left corner, beating two de-fenders
and the TSJC goalkeeper for the win.
The next day the Trojans starting the scor-ing
with a goal from Ricardo Zacarias in the
35th minute on an assist from Aleksa Blago-jevic,
LCCC then evened it up in the second
half and the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
Last Wednesday TSJC headed to La Junta
to take on Region IX – South rivals Otero JC.
The Trojans struck early when Blagojevic
tapped in a rebound off a free kick from Alan
Garcia Pena. Twenty minutes later Jose Mar-tinez
crossed a beautiful ball through the box
and Oscar Rivero headed it into the net for the
2-0 lead. In the 60th minute Rivero took a pass
on the edge of the box from Payton Reynolds,
and fired it across the box to Zacarias who
blasted it into the back of the net. Zacarias
would get his second of the game fighting his
way through three defenders to score off a long
pass from Brayan Molina. After an Otero goal
Shawn Rusk would finish out the scoring tak-ing
an assist from Joseph Leal and driving it
past the keeper. The final in La Junta was 5-1
in favor of the Trojans.
This past weekend the Trojans took on
Western Wyoming in Rock Springs. TSJC
got three goals early from Zacarias, Marti-nez
and Wesley Padgett, and then a late goal
from Lukas Smith to claim the 4-0 region win.
Saad Hissien had a pair of assists in the con-test.
TSJC wrapped up the long road trip in
Price, Utah with a hard fought 1-0 win over
the College of Eastern Utah. CEU, a first-year
program, was hosting its first home game of
the season before a very loud and vocal crowd.
Julian Padilla scored a very smart goal from a
set play served in by Molina for the only goal
of the contest.
“The boys really showed some resiliency
on the road. Playing five games in nine days,
while covering a lot of miles, is a challenge for
any program. It is important to learn from the
loss and tie, and even in the winning games
where we are not playing as cleanly as we
should be… It is time to become polished for
playoffs. Every day we are refining what we
do, making things occur automatically, and
learning more about our group. The hours
have been committed… We watch film, make
adjustments in trainings, focus on fitness,
utilize scouting reports to better understand
our opponents, and have been mentally train-ing
ourselves for the task at hand. There is
no doubt we are playing with a target on our
back. It is going to be interesting to see how we
respond in pressure situations,” stated third-year
Head Coach Aaron Miller.
This weekend the Trojans will host North-west
College on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. dur-ing
the annual Pink Game. On Saturday after-noon
the Sophomores will be honored prior to
the 3 p.m. game against Sheridan. These two
games will wrap up regular season play for
the Trojans. Having secured the No. 1 spot in
the Region IX South division, the Trojans gain
home-field advantage for a quarterfinal game
scheduled October 25th against the No. 4 team
from the North division. Kickoff time and op-ponent
to be announced.
