Major League Baseball's (MLB) Cincinnati Reds.
Following several months of rumored discussions between
the Reds and New York Yankees, the two sides agreed to a
trade on January 21 that sent veteran starting pitcher Sonny
Gray to Cincinnati in exchange for second base prospect
Shed Long and a competitive balance draft pick.
3. Sonny Gray
Gray, who was under contract through the 2019 season,
subsequently signed a three-year, $30.5 million extension
with the Reds with a club option for the 2023 season at $12
million. Gray will make $7.5 million in 2019 before the
extension kicks in.
Gray joins Alex Wood and Tanner Roark as the third starting
pitcher the Reds have acquired via trade this off-season.
Expected to be the team's No. 3 or No. 4 starter this season,
Gray registered a win-loss record of 11-9 to go along with a
4.90 earned run average (ERA) last season. He was an All-Star
in 2015 as a member of the Oakland Athletics and boasts a
career record of 59-52 with a 3.66 ERA and 789 strikeouts in
900-and-two-thirds innings pitched.
