This is a powerpoint presentation that discusses about one of the core subjects in the k-12 curriculum of the Senior High School: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person. On this presentation, it discusses about the definition and philosophical definition of essence and accidents.
2. ANALYSIS OF THE
PICTURE:
A chair (made of wood,
metal, etc) is still a chair
for the material it was
created from does not
defeat the purpose of it
being the chair
Same goes with other
materials
3.
4. ESSENCE (ACCORDING TO ARISTOTLE)
It is what makes the thing be what it is
It is through definition that we come to know what the
essence of a thing is
5. ESSENCE (ACCORDING TO ST. THOMAS AQUINAS)
It is the definable nature of the thing that exists
Follows Aristotle’s conceptuality on essence
“We cannot understand the essence of a thing without
understanding the parts of the thing”
Essence and existence is entirely different
6. ESSENCE (ACCORDING TO RENE DESCARTES)
“One can say the essence of a thing without knowing it
exists”
7.
8. ACCIDENT (ACCORDING TO ST. THOMAS AQUINAS)
These what accrue substances and modify it in some
way
It co-exists with a substance
The parts of a substance receive their identity through
being the parts of the substance whose parts they are.
9. EXAMPLE OF ACCIDENT:
There is a dog named Mike
Supposedly, we don’t know there is a dog named Mike
in the world
So, Mike is an accident
