- 2. Abstract
• Nokia has long been a leader in mobile devices and user-experiences.
• The mobile phone is now a universal device in all parts of the world for connecting
people in a very human way.
• However, the way in which people communicate together is continuously being
enhanced by different mechanisms, such as SMS, Instant Messaging, email, VoIP, and
much more.
• People are finding new and improved ways to communicate.
• Unfortunately, interoperability and access to many of these services are not as
universal as a simple telephone call.
• The Technology Collaboration Center in the Nokia Research Center (NRC) is engaging
key researchers inside of Nokia with operators and Internet Service Providers to
enhance calls and messaging with richer content and styles of communication.
• This will enrich everyday communication and allow people to connect to friends and
family more naturally.
• By working with key industry contacts, this will allow Nokia to deploy the
technologies more universally with better interoperability world-wide.

- 4. What is Communication
(think on a mobile device)
• Is it talking?
• Is it chatting, emailing, texting?
• Is it blogging?
• Is it “broadcasting”?

- 10. Take-away thoughts
• I want my device to help me to communication,
I don’t want to help my device to communicate.
• I have a phone so people can communicate with
me.
• Convergence means taking disparate or
fragmentary elements and integrating them
into a new a new whole.
• We cannot do this by ourselves.

- 11. Discussion topics?
• What is the role of interoperability?
• Think of roaming, using different services, different purposes?
• Winner-takes-all vs. win-win.
• Who owns the user? Who owns the service? Who owns the data?
• Operator, Internet service provider, user, content provider, no one?
• Who provides the identity?
• Role of SPAM, SPIM, SPIT, No-call-lists.
• Standards, open platforms & APIs or shipping products?
• Innovation at the low-end.
• Local connectivity vs. wide-area connectivity.
• Market place convergence.
• Strong get stronger vs. niche opportunities get big
