2. WHAT IS A CARDIAC
CATHETERIZATION LAB?
A cardiac catheterization lab, also known as a “cardiac cath
lab,” is a special hospital room where doctors perform
minimally invasive tests and procedures to diagnose and
treat cardiovascular disease.
The procedures performed in a cardiac cath lab almost
always involve tiny, flexible tubes, called catheters, which
can be use instead of surgery, to access the heart and blood
vessels.
A cath lab has special imaging equipment used to see the
arteries and check how well blood is flowing to and from
the heart. This information helps the care team to diagnose
and treat blockages and other problems in the arteries.
3. PROCEDURES DONE IN CATH LAB
Percutaneous coronary interventions(PCLs)
Percutaneous insertion of ventricular assist
devices(VADs)
Percutaneous Closure of Septal defects
Percutaneous heart valve repair and replacement
Implantable cardio verter defibrillator (ICD)
Electrophysiological Laboratory

7. TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IN CATH LAB
All types of anesthesia including :-
Monitored anesthesia care (MAC),
General anesthesia and
Regional Anesthesia are provided in cath lab depending
on the type of procedure.
General anesthesia is the best option for new techniques
and prolonged interventional procedures particularly
those procedures in which the cessation of ventilation is
required.
Epidural anesthesia is beneficial in lower extremity stents
procedures for vascular patency
8. DEPTH OF SEDATION
Mild sedation
Moderate sedation/ Analgesia
Deep sedation/ Analgesia
General Anesthesia
14. PROTECTIVE DEVICE IN CATH LAB FOR
DOCTORS,ANAESTHIST ,RADIOGRAPHERS
AND NURSES
Lead apron
Lead gloves
Thyroid sheild
Lead googles
Mobile protective barrier
Lead flaps
