4. Who needs Heart Surgery?
People need heart surgery for different reasons. The most common reasons are:
Coronary Artery Disease
When blood flow to the heart is blocked due to fat
depositions (plaque) it causes a heart attack.
The process of plaque build-up in the coronary
arteries is also called coronary artery disease (CAD).
This causes chest pain called angina. If the artery
becomes blocked, it results in a heart attack.
Damaged Heart Valves
The heart has four heart valves that control the
flow of blood in and out of the heart. Heart valves
can get damaged through aging, rheumatic fever,
or a heart attack.
They may become stiff, narrower or floppy, which
may allow blood to flow in the wrong direction.
If the valves are damaged, the heart has to work
harder to pump blood. Over time, the heart
becomes enlarged and inefficient.
An enlarged heart that does not work well leads to
heart failure.
Symptoms include shortness of breath, tiredness,
and fluid retention, swelling of legs.

Drug-Eluting Stents (DES) is a peripheral or coronary stent. It is
coated with medication which is eluted(released) during the
process to prevent the growth of scar tissue in the lining of the
artery. This helps the damaged artery to remain smooth and
open. It ensures a good blood flow and reduces the risk of
re-narrowing or restenosis of the artery.
Due to its slow healing process and risk of stent thrombosis,
patients implanted with DES stent should follow their doctor’s
instructions strictly on drug therapy (DAPT) which helps to
reduce the risk of blood clots (stent thrombosis).
The aortic artery is the main artery that carries oxygen-rich blood to the body. The aortic artery can become
enlarged and ruptured.This abnormality is usually caused by a genetic disorder.

Understanding the facts about Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty
Angioplasty is a treatment where a metal mesh tube (stent) is used to open a narrowed or blocked artery and
increase blood flow to the heart muscle. Angioplasty is also called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Widening a narrowed artery results in a better quality of life.
Coronary angiography also called cardiac catheterization is a test that identifies whether the coronary arteries are
narrow or blocked. Coronary angiography is done soon after a heart attack to find out about the severity and extent
of heart disease, and measure how well the heart is working.
Knowing this can help to decide what treatment (such as angioplasty, bypass surgery, or medications) would be
best for a patient.
However, in some cases, in patients who had undergone angioplasty without a stent, the opened artery may begin
to narrow again within months after the procedure. As we discussed above, this re-narrowing of the artery is called
restenosis and stents can help to prevent this. We, at AIG Hospitals, provide all the above-mentioned varieties.They
help to prevent the blood vessel from restenosis.

10. Cardiac electrophysiology (EP) is the study of the
electrical system of the heart. Electrical currents, in
the form of chemical ions, flow across the
membrane of each cell causing voltage surges that
set the heart in motion. When these electric signals
are disrupted, and the heart contraction is not
uniform, we have an abnormal heartbeat or
arrhythmia.
When the heart beats abnormally, its efficiency
decreases, and its capacity to pump blood is
reduced. Extreme arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat)
within the heart can lead to sudden death.
Electrophysiologists perform interventional
(nonsurgical) procedures such as cardiac ablation to
cure arrhythmias.They also treat patients who need
implantable devices to regulate their heartbeat.
These devices include pacemakers and
implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).
Pacemakers help in those people whose
heartbeat is too slow.
