Start By:
A. Remove the travel motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Travel Motor - Remove
and Install " in this manual.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Thoroughly clean the outside of travel motor (1) prior to disassembly. Weight of the travel
motor is 118 kg (260 lb).
2. Place an alignment mark across all housings of the travel motor for assembly purposes.
Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring
pressure.
Spring force will be released when covers are removed.
Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.

3. Remove two socket head bolts (2) from brake cover (3) that are 180 degrees from each
other. Replace these two bolts with bolts (4) that are slightly longer in length. The two
longer bolts will retain the brake cover when the remaining ten socket head bolts (2) are
removed.
4. Carefully remove the ten remaining socket head bolts (2) that retain the brake cover in
position.
5. Remove two longer bolts (4) from the brake cover.
6. Remove two remaining hex head bolts (5) from brake cover (3) .
7. Remove brake cover (3) from the head assembly.
8. If necessary, remove the brake adjusting screws (6) from brake cover (3) .

Note: There is an inner spring and an outer spring in each spring set.
9. Remove twenty-four spring sets from the brake and piston assembly.
10. Remove brake assembly (9) from head assembly (8) .

11. Remove ring (10) from brake assembly (9) .
12. Remove retainer plate (11) from brake assembly (9) .

13. Remove external discs (12) and internal plates (13) from brake assembly (9) .
14. Remove piston (14) from brake assembly (9) .
15. Remove seal (15) from piston (14) .

16. Remove O-rings (16) and (17) .
17. Remove retaining ring (18) from the shaft of the motor assembly. Remove gear (19) .
18. Use Tool (A) to remove retainer ring (21) .
Note: Measure the position of the rod assembly before removing. The nut and the rod
assembly must be returned to the original location at assembly.
19. Remove the nut and bushing (20) from the rod assembly.
20. Remove four socket head bolts (22) from head assembly (8) .

21. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to head assembly (8). Carefully remove the
head assembly from the motor assembly. Weight of the head assembly is 244.7 N (55 lb).
Note: The port plate can remain with the pump housing when the head assembly is
removed.
22. Remove port plate (23) from head assembly (8) .

23. Remove plug (24) from head assembly (8) .
24. Remove check valve assembly (25) from head assembly (8) .
25. Remove stem (30) from check valve (25) .
26. Remove seat (26), spring (27), guide (28), and seal (29) from stem (30) .

27. If necessary, remove pin (31) from the head assembly (8) .
28. Remove O-ring seal (32) from the head assembly.
29. Use Tooling (D) and a hammer to remove bearing (33) and seal (34) from the bore of the
head assembly.
Note: The port plate can remain with the head assembly when the head assembly is
removed from the pump housing.
30. Remove rod assembly (35) from motor housing (37). If necessary, remove port plate (23).
Remove O-ring seal (36).

Note: Barrel assembly must remain intact during removal.
31. Position motor housing (37) sideways. Carefully remove barrel assembly (38) .
32. Place identification marks on piston assemblies (39), retainer (40), and barrel (38). These
components must be reinstalled in the original location.

33. Remove piston assemblies (39) and retainer (40) from barrel (38) .
34. Remove piston assemblies (39) from retainer (40) .

35. Remove guide (41), shims (42), and spring assembly (43) from barrel (38) .
36. Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (44) from shaft assembly (45) and motor housing
(37) .

37. Use a soft hammer to drive shaft assembly (45) from motor housing (37) .
38. Remove cover (46) from shaft assembly (45) .
39. Remove seal (47) from cover (46) .

40. Use Tool (A) to remove retaining ring (48) from shaft assembly (45) .
41. Use a press to remove bearing (49) and spacer (50) from shaft (45) .

42. Remove swashplate (51) from motor housing (37) .
43. Remove plate (52) from swashplate (51) .

44. Remove machine screws (53). Remove retainer plate (54) and plunger (55) from swashplate
(51) .
45. If necessary, remove stopper (56) and pin (57) from swashplate (51) .
46. Remove valve cartridge (58) from motor housing (37) .
47. Remove two pistons (59) from the motor housing.
48. Remove the two machine screws (60) and bearings (61) from the motor housing.

49. Remove seal (62) from rod assembly (35) .
50. Remove rings (64) from valve cartridge (66) .
51. Remove seals (63) and (65) from the valve cartridge.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned
in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts.
Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are
worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
Note: Apply a light film of "10W" oil to all components before assembly.

1. Install seals (63) and (65 ) on valve cartridge (66) .
2. Install rings (64) on the valve cartridge.
3. Install seal (62) on rod assembly (35) .

4. Install bearings (61) in motor housing (37).
5. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to two machine screws (60). Install the machine
screws in motor housing (37) and tighten to a torque of 5 N·m (44 lb in).
6. Install two pistons (59) in motor housing (37) .
7. Install valve cartridge (58) in the motor housing.
8. Install stopper (56) and pin (57) in swashplate (51) .
9. Install rods (55) and retainer plate (54) in swashplate (51) .
10. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to machine screws (53). Install the machine screws
in the retainer plate and the swashplate. Tighten the machine screws to a torque of 5 N·m
(45 lb in).

11. Install plate (52) on swashplate (51) .
12. Carefully install swashplate assembly (51) in motor housing (37) .

13. Install spacer (50) on shaft (45) .
14. Raise the temperature of bearing (49) to 135 °C (275 °F). Install the bearing on the shaft.
15. Use Tool (A) to install retaining ring (48) on shaft assembly (45) .

16. Install seal (47) on cover (46) .
17. Install cover (46) on shaft assembly (45) .
18. Install shaft assembly (45) in motor housing (37) .

19. Use Tool (B) to install retaining ring (44) on shaft assembly (45) and motor housing (37) .
20. Install shims (42), spring assembly (43), and guide (41) on barrel (38) .
Note: Ensure that the components are installed in the original location.

21. Install piston assemblies (39) in retainer (40) .

22. Install piston assemblies (39) in retainer (40). Install the retainer and piston assemblies in
barrel (38) .
23. Install rod assembly (35) in motor housing assembly (37) .
24. Install barrel assembly (38) in motor housing assembly (37) .

25. Turn the motor housing assembly upright. Ensure that the barrel assembly is clear of rod
assembly (35). Ensure that the barrel assembly is properly seated on the swashplate.
26. Install port plate (23) on the barrel assembly.
27. Use Tooling (E) and Tooling (F) to measure dimension (X). The correct dimension is
achieved by the changing of shims (42). Dimension (X) is 3.95 ± 0.20 mm (0.156 ± 0.008
inch).
28. Install O-ring seal (36) on motor housing assembly (37) .

29. Install seal (34) in head (8) .
30. Use Tool (D) to seat seal (34) in head (8) .
31. Lower the temperature of bearing (33) and install the bearing in head (8) .
