Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that develop in the uterus. They are the most common tumors in women. While many women have no symptoms, others experience heavy periods, painful periods, pressure or swelling in the lower abdomen, pain during sex, difficulty emptying the bladder, and lower back pain. Risk factors include obesity, family history, black or African American ethnicity, and eating a diet high in red meat. Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a non-invasive treatment option that uses ultrasound waves guided by MRI to destroy or shrink fibroids without surgery.
