Customer Bulletin 0109 ISO-C1 PolyIsocyanurate Insulation UL and FM Testing
1. CUSTOMER BULLETIN 0109
ISO-C1® Polyisocyanurate Insulation
UL and FM Testing
PURPOSE
This Customer Bulletin is the first in a series of white papers aimed at providing our clients,
engineers, contractors, fabricators, and friends with objective information on competitive
products. Dyplast Products, LLC has announced industry-leading results regarding its ASTM
E84 flame spread/smoke development tests conducted by UL and FM; and adds clarity to often
misunderstood claims regarding flame/smoke properties of alternative insulations.
SUMMARY OF RESULTS
• ISO-C1/ 2.0 is the only two pound density polyisocyanurate bunstock foam that has both UL
Listings and FM Approvals for Class 1 flame spread and smoke development1. UL and FM are
two of the most respected testing agencies in the world, and a certification by either is
challenging. To maintain our certifications with the testing agencies, Dyplast Products is
required to undergo on-site audits up to 4 times per year;
• ISO-C1/2.0 has obtained the following independently verified test results2:
o an E-84 rating at 1 inch thickness of 20/55 (FM)
o at 4 inches thick² a 25/130 measured by FM¹, and
o at 4 inch thickness a 25/195 as measured by UL;
• No other US polyisocyanurate foam manufacturer has achieved a Class 1 at either UL or FM,
and as far as we are aware no other US polyisocyanurate foam manufacturer has obtained
an official Class I certification at any independent ASTM E 84 testing facility;
• Because the E-84 test results can vary from test to test, all certified listings or approvals specify
that the average should be based on three tests. For example when Dyplast burned its ISO-C1/2.0
at 1 inch with FM the individual test results varied from 15 to 20 for flame spread and from 45 to
75 for smoke;

2. • Two other significant factors influencing the smoke ratings are the foam thickness and the foam
density since smoke levels are proportional to the mass of foam being tested. Thus it is incorrect
to suggest that one Class 1 foam is materially better than another product when the tests were
performed on foams of a different thickness. Dyplast believes that ISO-C1/2.0 represents leading
edge technology and offers the most complete set of properties of any polyisocyanurate foam on
the market;
• Other polyisocyanurate insulation manufacturers or suppliers may claim better flame and
smoke spread results for "systems", which may include aluminum facers or metal laminates;
customers should request flame/smoke data on the polyiso foams without laminates in order to
credibly assess alternative insulation.
