2012

In 2009, Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an American geologist, visits astrophysicist
Dr. Satnam Tsurutani (Jimi Mistry) in India and learns that neutrinos from a massive solar flare
are causing the temperature of the Earth's core to increase rapidly. Adrian gives a report on this
to White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser (Oliver Platt) who ends up taking Adrian to meet
the President of the United States.

In 2010, President Thomas Wilson (Danny Glover) and other international leaders begin
a secret project to ensure humanity's survival. Approximately 400,000 people are chosen to
board "arks" that are constructed at Cho Ming, Tibet, in the Himalayas. At the same time as the
People's Liberation Army are gathering volunteers, a Buddhist monk named Nima (Osric Chau)
is evacuated while his brother Tenzin (Chin Han) joins the workers in the Ark project. Additional
funding for the project is raised by selling tickets to the private sector for €1 billion per person.
By 2011, humanity's valuable treasures are moved to the Alps under the guise of protecting them
from terrorist attacks with the help of art expert and First Daughter Dr. Laura Wilson (Thandie
Newton).

In 2012, Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) is a science fiction writer in Los Angeles who
works part-time as a limousine driver for the Russian billionaire, Yuri Karpov (Zlatko Burić).
Jackson's ex-wife, Kate (Amanda Peet) and their children Noah (Liam James) and Lilly (Morgan
Lily) live with Kate's boyfriend, plastic surgeon Gordon Silberman (Thomas McCarthy).

Jackson takes Noah and Lilly camping in Yellowstone National Park. After an encounter
with Helmsley, they meet Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson), who hosts a radio show from the
park. Charlie plays a video of Charles Hapgood's theory that polar shifts and the Mesoamerican
Long Count Calendar predict that the 2012 phenomenon will occur. He has a map of the ark
project in addition to information about officials and scientists from around the world who were
murdered after planning to alert the public. The family returns home as seismic activity violently
increases along the San Andreas Fault. Jackson grows suspicious and rents a plane to rescue his
family. He collects his family and Gordon as the Earth crust displacement begins, and they
narrowly escape Los Angeles as the city sinks into the Pacific Ocean.

As millions die in catastrophic earthquakes and tsunamis worldwide, the group flies to
Yellowstone to retrieve Charlie's map, escaping as the Yellowstone Caldera erupts. Charlie stays
behind to broadcast the eruption and is killed. Learning that the arks are in China, the group
lands in a devastated Las Vegas to find a larger plane. They run into Yuri, his twin sons Alec and
Oleg (played by Alexandre and Philippe Haussmann), girlfriend Tamara (Beatrice Rosen) and
pilot Sasha (Johann Urb). The group secures an Antonov An-500 aircraft and they depart for
China. Also heading for the arks aboard Air Force One are Anheuser, Helmsley and Laura
Wilson. President Wilson remains in Washington, D.C. to address the nation one last time. With
the Vice President dead and the Speaker of the House missing, Anheuser assumes de facto
leadership. President Wilson is later killed by a megatsunami that sends the aircraft carrier USS
John F. Kennedy crashing into the White House.

Arriving in China in a crash landing that kills Sasha, the group is spotted by helicopters
from the People's Liberation Army, carrying animals for the Arks. Yuri and his sons, possessing
tickets, are taken to the arks, leaving Tamara and the others behind. They are picked up by Nima
and are taken to the arks with his grandparents (Lisa Lu and Chang Tseng). They stow away on
Ark 3 with the help of Tenzin. As a megatsunami approaches the site, an impact driver becomes
lodged in the gears of the ark's hydraulics doors, preventing a boarding gate from closing and
keeping the ship from starting its engines. In the ensuing chaos, Yuri, Gordon and Tamara are
killed, Tenzin is wounded, and Ark 3 is set adrift. Jackson and Noah dislodge the impact driver
and the crew regains control of the ark before it collides with Mount Everest.

After flood waters from the tsunamis recede, the arks travel to the Cape of Good Hope in
South Africa where the Drakensberg Mountains have risen to become the tallest mountains in the
world. Jackson is rejoined with his family, and Helmsley starts a relationship with Laura.
ZOOKEEPER

Griffin Keyes (Kevin James) sets up a plan to propose to the love of his life, Stephanie
(Leslie Bibb), but she rejects him and claims that his career as a zookeeper is what is keeping her
away, therefore breaking Griffin's heart.
Five years later, Griffin is shown to be the lead zookeeper at the Franklin Park Zoo who
cares deeply for the zoo animals. That night, Griffin holds a party at the zoo for his brother Dave
(Nat Faxon) who is getting married, but freaks out when he discovers that Stephanie was invited.
Dave offers Griffin to come and work with him at a car dealership, explaining that it is the best
way to get Stephanie back. Griffin contemplates quitting his job at the zoo and joining his
brother at the dealership.
Later, the animals hold a meeting saying that they think Griffin is the best zookeeper at
the zoo and don't want him to leave, so they decide to find some way to help him win Stephanie's
heart. Jerome the bear (Jon Favreau) suggests that they teach Griffin their animal mating
techniques, but Joe the lion (Sylvester Stallone) protests, reminding them that it's against the
animal code to talk to humans. Donald the monkey (Adam Sandler) says that Stephanie will be at
the zoo tomorrow, and all the animals have to do is make Griffin look like a hero in front of her.
The next day, Donald unlocks the door to the lion enclosure and lets Joe out, who
confronts Stephanie and Dave's fiancee Robin (Steffiana de la Cruz). Kate (Rosario Dawson), the
zoo's vet, manages to get them away from Joe, but Griffin fails to jump into the lion enclosure,
ruining the animals' plan. The next night, the animals break their code of silence and tell Griffin
that they will teach him what to do to win Stephanie. Griffin learns their different mating rituals,
but ends up humiliating himself in front of the other zookeepers and the guests.
Griffin then has a talk with Bernie (Nick Nolte), a forlorn gorilla who was moved into a
deep enclosure after allegedly attacking Shane (Donnie Wahlberg), another zookeeper. Bernie
explains to Griffin that Shane abuses the animals and he fell when he was abusing Bernie. He
lied and said that Bernie attacked him, causing Bernie to lose his trust in humans.
Griffin discovers that Stephanie is dating her other ex-boyfriend, a bullying alpha-male
named Gale (Joe Rogan). Janet (Cher), Joe's mate, tells Griffin that the best way to attract a
female is to be seen with another female, so Griffin asks Kate to with him to Dave and Robin's
wedding. Griffin then takes Bernie to T.G.I. Fridays and they bond, with Bernie telling Griffin
that he's his best friend.
Griffin and Kate go to the wedding and seem to have fun together. Griffin becomes brave
enough to stand up to Gale and this grabs Stephanie's attention. After Kate tells Griffin she had a
great time with him, Stephanie asks Griffin out to dinner. Griffin accepts and they go to dinner
and then go to a fashion show. Stephanie tells Griffin that his job at the zoo is holding him back,
so Griffin decides to quit his job and accepts Dave's offer, which upsets Kate. Bernie also
becomes upset and tells Griffin that he thought he could trust someone again, but was proved
wrong when Griffin quit his job. Kate decides to leave the zoo and accepts a job in Nairobi.
Griffin becomes the best employee at the car dealership, but misses working at the zoo.
Stephanie proposes to Griffin, but Griffin refuses and dumps her. He then goes back to the zoo
and apologizes to Bernie, who accepts Griffin's friendship. The animals then tell Griffin that
Kate is heading to the airport. With Bernie's help, Griffin manages to catch up with Kate and
confesses his love for her. Six months later, Griffin and Kate are back working at the zoo and
Bernie is now living in a new enclosure where he gets a great view of the city.
THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW
Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is a paleoclimatologist on an expedition in Antarctica with colleagues
Frank (Jay O. Sanders) and Jason (Dash Mihok). They are drilling for ice core samples on the Larsen Ice
Shelf for the NOAA when the shelf breaks off and Jack almost falls to his death, but he is saved at the
last second, and they finish their expedition.

Later on, in New Delhi, India, Jack presents his findings on global warming at a United
Nations conference, where diplomats and Vice President of the United States Raymond Becker (Kenneth
Welsh) are unconvinced by Jack's findings. However, Professor Terry Rapson (Ian Holm) of the Hedland
Climate Research Centre in Scotland believes in Jack's theories. Several buoys in the North
Atlanticsimultaneously show a massive drop in the ocean temperature, and Rapson concludes that
melting polar ice is disrupting the North Atlantic current. He contacts Jack,
whose paleoclimatological weather model shows how climate changes caused the first Ice Age, and can
predict what will happen. Jack thought the events would take hundreds or thousands of years, but his
team, along withNASA's meteorologist Janet Tokada (Tamlyn Tomita), builds a forecast model with their
combined data.

Across the world, violent weather causes mass destruction, including a massive snowstorm in
New Delhi, a powerful hailstorm strikingTokyo, Japan, and a series of devastating tornadoes in Los
Angeles. President Blake (Perry King) authorizes the FAA to suspend all air traffic due to severe
turbulence. At the International Space Station (ISS) three astronauts see a huge storm system spanning
the northern hemisphere, delaying their returning home. The situation worsens when the latter develops
into three massive hurricane-likesuper storms with eyes holding extremely cold air that instantly freezes
anything it comes in contact with. Jack's theories become reality in seven to ten days' time.

Meanwhile, Jack's son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is in New York City for an academic competition
with his friends Brian and Laura (Arjay Smith and Emmy Rossum), where they also befriend a student
named J.D. (Austin Nichols). On the flight over there is severe turbulence and Sam grabs Laura's hand in
fright. During the competition, birds migrating south suddenly fill the sky as animals all over New York
become agitated. The weather becomes increasingly violent with intense winds and rains, causing the
traffic-jammed Manhattan streets to become flooded knee-deep in a mix of rainwater, saltwater, and
sewage. Sam calls his father, promising to be on the next train home, but the subways and Grand Central
Terminal are closed due to flooding. As the storm worsens a massive storm surge hits Manhattan,
causing major flooding and killing thousands in the chaos. Sam and his friends seek shelter in the New
York Public Library, but not before Laura gets wounded, cutting her leg on a submerged taxicab.

While survivors in the northern United States are forced to stay inside due to the cold, President
Blake orders the evacuation of the southern states, causing almost all of the refugees to head to Mexico.
Initially Mexico closes its US border, but President Blake negotiates to open the border. Jack and his
team set out for Manhattan to find his son. Their truck crashes into a tractor just pastPhiladelphia, so the
group continues on snowshoes. During the journey, Frank falls through the glass roof of a snow-
covered shopping mall. As Jason and Jack try to pull Frank up, the glass under them continues to crack
and Frank sacrifices himself by cutting the rope and falling to the floor far below. Meanwhile in Mexico,
Vice President Raymond Becker hears from the Secretary of State that President Blake's motorcade was
caught in one of the super storms before he could make it to Mexico, so Becker is sworn in as the new
President.

Inside the library, Sam warns everyone to stay indoors, but few listen. The small group that
remains burns books to stay alive and breaks the vending machine for food. Laura appeared to have a
cold, so Sam comforts her and later confesses that he joined the team because he held feelings for her.
Laura and Sam share a kiss. Soon afterward, the group find out that Laura is afflicted with blood
poisoning from her cut leg's being infected by the sewage-tainted water, so Sam, Brian and J.D. search
for penicillin in a derelict Russian cargo ship that drifted inland, and are attacked by starving wolves that
have escaped from the local zoo. The eye of the super storm begins to pass over the city, instantly
freezing everything from the top down. The three barely get back to the library with the medicine, food
and supplies they were able to scavenge.

During the deep freeze, Jack and Jason take shelter in an abandoned Wendy's restaurant, then
resume their journey after the astronauts confirm the storm's dissipation, finally arriving in New York.
They discover the library buried in snow, but find Sam's group alive. They radio this in and the President
orders in UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters flown in New York. President Becker orders search and rescue
teams to look for other survivors (having been given hope by the survival of Sam's group) as he gives his
first address to the nation. As the main characters are evacuated and flown over the city, they see that
hundreds of other helicopters searching for more survivors find success as people from other skyscrapers
flock to the roofs, looking for a ride to safety. The movie concludes with the astronauts looking down at
Earth from the Space Station, showing most of the northern hemisphere covered in ice and snow, with
one of the astronauts calling it "the clearest atmosphere [he's] ever seen."
WALL – E

In 2805, Earth is covered in garbage due to decades of mass consumerism facilitated by
the megacorporation Buy n Large. BnL evacuated Earth's population in fully
automated starliners in 2105, leaving behind trash compactor Waste Allocation Load Lifter –
Earth Class “WALL-E” robots to clean the planet, but they eventually stopped operating and
Earth was left abandoned. One WALL-E unit has managed to remain active by repairing itself
using parts from other broken units. It has also developed sentience, as with its regular duties it
inquisitively collects artifacts of human civilization back to its storage truck home, has
befriended a cockroach and enjoys listening to Hello, Dolly!
One day, WALL-E discovers and collects a growing seedling plant. A spaceship later
lands and deploys Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator or “EVE”, an advanced robot sent from
the BnL starliner Axiom to search for vegetation on Earth. Inspired by Hello, Dolly!, WALL-E
falls in love with the initially cold and hostile EVE and wishes to join hands with her, who
gradually softens and befriends him. When WALL-E brings EVE to his truck and showcases his
collection, she finds the plant and automatically stores it, going into standby mode for retrieval
from her ship. WALL-E spends time with EVE while she is on standby. He then clings to the
hull of EVE's ship as it collects and returns her to the Axiom.
On the Axiom, the ship's original human passengers and their descendants have suffered
from severe bone loss and become morbidly obese after centuries of living in microgravityand
relying on the ship's automated systems for most tasks. Captain B. McCrea, in charge of the ship,
mostly leaves control to the robotic autopilot Auto. WALL-E follows EVE to the bridge of
the Axiom, where the Captain learns that by putting the plant in the spaceship holo-detector and
verifying Earth is habitable again, the Axiom will make a hyperjumpback to Earth so the
passengers can recolonize. However, Auto orders McCrea's robotic assistant GO-4 to steal the
plant as part of its no return directive, secretly issued to autopilots after BnL incorrectly
concluded in 2110 that the planet could not be saved and humanity should remain in space.
With the plant missing, EVE is considered defective and taken to the repair ward along
with WALL-E. WALL-E mistakes the process on EVE for torture and tries to save her,
accidentally releasing a horde of malfunctioning robots, while the security systems then
designate both WALL-E and EVE as rogue. Angry with WALL-E's disruptions, EVE brings him
to the escape pod bay to send him home. There they witness GO-4 dispose of the missing plant
by placing it inside a pod set to self-destruct. WALL-E enters the pod, which is
then jettisoned into space, escaping with the plant before the pod explodes. Reconciling with
EVE, they celebrate with a dance in space outside the Axiom. Meanwhile the Captain, learning
from the ship's computer, becomes fascinated about life on Earth before its pollution and
abandonment.
The plant is brought to the captain, who surveys EVE's recordings of Earth and concludes
that mankind must return to restore their home. However, Auto reveals his directive, staging
a mutiny by tasering WALL-E, incapacitating EVE and confining the captain to his quarters.
EVE realizes the only parts for repairing WALL-E are in his truck on Earth, so she helps him
bring the plant to the holo-detector to activate the Axiom's hyperjump. Captain McCrea opens the
holo-detector while fighting with Auto and causing chaos on the ship, but Auto partially crushes
WALL-E by closing the holo-detector on him. After McCrea disables Auto and takes back
control, EVE places the plant in the holo-detector, freeing the severely damaged WALL-E and
setting the Axiom on the instant hyperjump to Earth. The human population finally lands back on
Earth after hundreds of years.
EVE brings WALL-E back to his home where she successfully repairs and reactivates
him, but he reverts to his original programming as an unfeeling waste compactor. Heartbroken,
EVE gives WALL-E a farewell kiss that jolts back WALL-E's memory and personality. WALL-
E and EVE happily reunite as the humans and robots of the Axiom begin to restore Earth and its
environment, shown through a series of artworks at the end.
THE ANIMALS ARE BEAUTIFUL

This South African film tells about life in these areas in a humorous way. It was directed
and written by Jamie Uys, who is most famous for his later film The Gods Must Be Crazy.
The film begins in the Namib desert, with the narrator saying: "You'd think nobody could
make a living here." But the film proves the opposite and shows the lives of the animals that live
there. The narrator concludes: "But to the Oryx and the little creatures of the Namib, this
waterless, hostile desert is paradise."
The second third of the film shows the rich life in the Okavango River and Okavango
Delta (see Marula, below), and the last third of the film focuses on life in the Kalahari desert.

On the Axiom, the ship's original human passengers and their descendants have suffered from severe bone loss and become morbidly obese after centuries of living in microgravityand relying on the ship's automated systems for most tasks. Captain B. McCrea, in charge of the ship, mostly leaves control to the robotic autopilot Auto. WALL-E follows EVE to the bridge of the Axiom, where the Captain learns that by putting the plant in the spaceship holo-detector and verifying Earth is habitable again, the Axiom will make a hyperjumpback to Earth so the passengers can recolonize. However, Auto orders McCrea's robotic assistant GO-4 to steal the plant as part of its no return directive, secretly issued to autopilots after BnL incorrectly concluded in 2110 that the planet could not be saved and humanity should remain in space. With the plant missing, EVE is considered defective and taken to the repair ward along with WALL-E. WALL-E mistakes the process on EVE for torture and tries to save her, accidentally releasing a horde of malfunctioning robots, while the security systems then designate both WALL-E and EVE as rogue. Angry with WALL-E's disruptions, EVE brings him to the escape pod bay to send him home. There they witness GO-4 dispose of the missing plant by placing it inside a pod set to self-destruct. WALL-E enters the pod, which is then jettisoned into space, escaping with the plant before the pod explodes. Reconciling with EVE, they celebrate with a dance in space outside the Axiom. Meanwhile the Captain, learning from the ship's computer, becomes fascinated about life on Earth before its pollution and abandonment. The plant is brought to the captain, who surveys EVE's recordings of Earth and concludes that mankind must return to restore their home. However, Auto reveals his directive, staging a mutiny by tasering WALL-E, incapacitating EVE and confining the captain to his quarters. EVE realizes the only parts for repairing WALL-E are in his truck on Earth, so she helps him bring the plant to the holo-detector to activate the Axiom's hyperjump. Captain McCrea opens the holo-detector while fighting with Auto and causing chaos on the ship, but Auto partially crushes

WALL-E by closingthe holo-detector on him. After McCrea disables Auto and takes back control, EVE places the plant in the holo-detector, freeing the severely damaged WALL-E and setting the Axiom on the instant hyperjump to Earth. The human population finally lands back on Earth after hundreds of years. EVE brings WALL-E back to his home where she successfully repairs and reactivates him, but he reverts to his original programming as an unfeeling waste compactor. Heartbroken, EVE gives WALL-E a farewell kiss that jolts back WALL-E's memory and personality. WALL- E and EVE happily reunite as the humans and robots of the Axiom begin to restore Earth and its environment, shown through a series of artworks at the end.

THE ANIMALS AREBEAUTIFUL This South African film tells about life in these areas in a humorous way. It was directed and written by Jamie Uys, who is most famous for his later film The Gods Must Be Crazy. The film begins in the Namib desert, with the narrator saying: "You'd think nobody could make a living here." But the film proves the opposite and shows the lives of the animals that live there. The narrator concludes: "But to the Oryx and the little creatures of the Namib, this waterless, hostile desert is paradise." The second third of the film shows the rich life in the Okavango River and Okavango Delta (see Marula, below), and the last third of the film focuses on life in the Kalahari desert.
