What Does The One Ring Symbolize
J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings
"One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them"
(Tolkien, The Two Towers 233)
One of the masters of British Literature, J.R.R. Tolkien was able to create afantasy world with an endless supply of parallelisms to reality. The fantasy
world was found in the "Lord of the Rings." Tolkien is able to create wonderful symbolism and meaning out of what would otherwise be considered
nonsense. He creates symbolism and meaning by mastering his own world and his own language. To understand the symbolism of The Ruling Ring, or
The One Ring, one must understand the events, which take place from the time of the ring's creation until the time ... Show more content on

And while he wore the One Ring he could perceive all the things that where done by means of the lesser rings, and he could see and govern the very
thoughts of those that wore them."(Tolkien, The Silmarillion 589)
The people recognize the power of the One Ring as soon as Sauron puts the One Ring on his finger. They realize that he can control their thoughts.
This makes the people decide to remove their rings and never use them. The people and Sauron become bitter enemies while the One Ring remains in
Sauron's possession. The One Ring is lost in the river when Isildur defeats Sauron. After passing through many hands, the One Ring is given to Frodo
Baggins. This brings us to the beginning of the "Lord of the Rings."
The nature of the One Ring can be explained in three distinct ways. The One Ring is a personification of Sauron's power. It is a symbol of evil in
general. It also is an object with a mind of its own.
As the One Ring's creator, Sauron had placed a great amount of his own power into the ring for the purpose of controlling the other rings. The ring
is an extension of Sauron's power. The loss of the ring does not destroy Sauron. Only the destruction of the One Ring can destroy Sauron. His power
simply becomes spread around, and his influence affects whoever has possession of the ring. If Sauron gets the ring back, his power will be greater
than ever. "If he recovers it, then he will command them all again, wherever they be,

Gollum Allegory
In J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the character of Gollum has quickly proven to be the single most important character to the plot. This is
due partly to his role in the destruction of the One Ring; but more to do with the themes associated with the character of Gollum. Gollum, despite
being a disgusting and repulsive creature who had entered the story later than most other characters, embodies the strongest allegory in the entire
trilogy. Gollum is an allegory for the depravity of Man because he puts all of his focus on a physical object with absolutely no eternal value, Gollum's
devotion to the One Ring led to major physical and mental transformations, and Gollum's eventual obsession with the One Ring brought about the

But when Gollum stole it, Frodo remembered something Gandalf had told him' "'But do you remember Gandalf's words: Even Gollum may have
something yet to do? But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring. The Quest would have been in vain, even at the bitter end.'" Gollum was
so mentally warped, his mind could not perceive the danger between him and the ring. His lack of foresight coupled with his obsession with the Ring
brought about the ultimate end of both himself and the One Ring. Smeagol is an allegory for the depravity of Man because he puts all of his focus on
a physical object with absolutely no eternal value, Gollum's devotion to the One Ring led to major physical and mental transformations, and Gollum's
eventual obsession with the One Ring brought about the terrible end of both himself and the

Fodo's Fate In Lord Of The Flies
"There was no answer. Frodo did not even hear his cries. He was already far away..." (400). The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, is an epic
because Frodo Baggins determines his group's fate when making courageous decisions throughout their journey through the vast Middle–earth to
destroy the Ring. Frodo Baggins receives the Ring after his cousin's disappearance and takes the responsibility to destroy it. Frodo and his party come
across many magical creatures that attempt to harm them. While encountering these creatures and various conflicts, Frodo has to make courageous
decisions that determine their fate. When receiving the Ring after his cousin's disappearance, Frodo decides he must travel to the Cracks of Doom to
destroy it. Frodo displays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sauron has many assistants throughout Middle–earth attempting to harm Frodo and protect the Ring. After Frodo was stabbed by the Black Riders,
they were swept away by a flood at the River. Frodo believes they were destroyed but Gandalf explains that, "You cannot destroy Ringwraiths like
that... The power of their master is in them, and they stand or fall by him." (273). The Black Riders are too powerful to destroy because of their
master, Sauron. The Fellowship has no other choice but to avoid them. The Fellowship also encounter other aids of Sauron. They are attacked by
wolves, followed by an attack from orcs. As Frodo gets closer to destroying the Ring, Sauron has to try much harder to find and end Frodo. Frodo is
harmed many times when attacked, but manages to heal his wounds with the help of his friends. The creatures the Fellowship encounter are all very
powerful since they are controlled by Sauron. The more powerful they are, they more damage and conflict they will cause to Frodo's goal. Frodo and
his group have to change their path many times throughout their journey in order to avoid the enemies they encounter. The Fellowship is able to defeat
the enemies they encounter with the help of teamwork. They all work together with one goal in mind: destroy the

Comparing Odyssey And The Fellowship Of The Ring
Daniel Blumen

E Period Literary Heroes Honors
Both The Odyssey and The Fellowship of the Ring are epics depicting the maturity of one of the heros in the poem/book. The Odyssey was translated
by Robert Fitzgerald and The Fellowship of the Ring was written by J.R.R Tolkien in 1954. Telemakhos and Frodo must overcome the people that
stand in their way to reach their full potential. Frodo Baggins and Telemakhos both overcome impediments and by their mentor figures, reach their
maturity. The Fellowship of the Ring takes place in a fictional world namedMiddle–Earth. The title itself tells some aspects of the book. The Ring, a
possession of The Dark Lord Sauron, is used for evil deeds. Sauron placed much of his power in the Ring, and controls people through it. This is all in

Your cloak is new; even your skin! You are one of the gods who rule the sweep of heaven!
Be kind to us, we'll make you fair oblation and gifts of hammered gold. Have mercy on us!"(16.181–185) Frodo, in uncultured outside of the Shire, for
he does not know who the great Tom Bombadil is: "Fair lady! Tell me, if my asking does not seem foolish, who is Tom Bombadil" (140)?
There are several themes that are in The Fellowship of The Ring, as well as The Odyssey. Some of these themes were displayed in the previous
paragraph. Both epics include hospitality, the hero's journey, good vs. evil, and several other themes that the heroes must overcome to reach their goals.
The Fellowship of the Ring has really been a great book to read. It entices the reader and immerses them into the world of Middle–Earth. While the
book is action–packed, it delivers a strong message of Frodo's best qualities; his persistence, loyalty, and bravery. The Fellowship of the Ring is a
book that I would recommend to everybody I know. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the epic by J.R.R Tolkien and am excited to read the sequel next

Sauron From The Canterbury Tales
The best villain I have ever read about was Sauron from " Lord of the Rings". The Dark Lord Sauron, a servant of Morgoth, the Great Enemy, took
his master's place after the First Age. Through the story he makes much trouble for the protagonist and creates wars. Sending many enemies and
dragons as such to attack the hero's. Sauron is a nightmare that would do nothing to get the ring's power. Sauron does many things that show he is a
villain. I have already said some things about what he did. Sauron attacked the people that were once in peace and all for power. He killed probably
thousands or more with his armies. He attacked the elves and the dwarves and more. He did horrible things and has earned the spot as the best villain

The Hobbit
Lord of the rings the fellowship book 1
The first chapter in the book begins in a small village, following the book of The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins celebrates his 111th (or eleventy–first, as it is
called in the story) birthday on the same day, 22 September, that his younger cousin and adopted heirFrodo Baggins celebrates his coming of age at
thirty–three. At the birthday party, Bilbo departs from the Shire, the land of the Hobbits. Bilbo does so by using the magic ring (that he had found
on his journey) to disappear and is aided by Gandalf the Wizard with a flash and puff of smoke, leading many in the Shire to believe he has gone mad.
He leaves Frodo his remaining belongings, including his home, Bag End, and the Ring. It becomes apparent that ... Show more content on

Frodo goes by the name of "Underhill" rather than Baggins. While visiting with other hobbits and men from Bree, Frodo makes eye contact with a
mysterious–looking man in the corner. The man then warns Frodo that Pippin is close to revealing who the hobbits really are, so Frodo begins to
recite a poem that earns the applause of everyone in the inn. When he recites it a second time, Frodo gets carried away and falls off the table and
accidentally lets the Ring slip on his finger causing him to disappear. The incident causes a major commotion, and several rough–looking men leave the
inn. Frodo reappears and said that he slipped away out of embarrassment, but few buy the explanation. The hobbits then retire from the common
room only to find that they have been followed by the mysterious man, who goes by the name Strider, a Ranger. He claims to be a friend of Gandalf
and warns that the NazgГ»l are after them and only he can guide them to Rivendell. Frodo doubts Strider until Butterbur comes in with a note from

Notes On Gandalf And Sauron
#99
Gandalf and Sauron were driving 70 miles per hour down a desolate road at 2 am. Both men were followed and stopped by state troopers Bilbo and
Frodo outside of Sauron 's home. Since deer season started, Bilbo and Frodo were looking for hunters with illegal firearms and illegally shot game. The
police stopped Sauron and Gandalf in the driveway. In the process of speaking to Sauron, Frodo smelled alcohol on Sauron's breath. Sauron agreed
to take a sobriety test, failed it, and was subsequently arrested. Gandalf left the vehicle, and Bilbo confronted Gandalf before Gandalf could enter
Sauron 's home. Bilbo asked Gandalf if he could search the vehicle and Gandalf agreed to the search. In the process of searching the vehicle Frodo
and Bilbo find a wallet in the glove compartment and a dead body in the back of the van. Upon the discovery of the body, Frodo chases after
Gandalf and arrests him inside the house. Inside the home, officers find and seize evidence of drug trafficking and poaching. Following Sauron's and
Gandalf's arrest, Bilbo and Frodo realize the possibility that the murder was associated with a drug deal gone wrong. The police obtained a warrant to
search the home for further evidence of poaching and discovered the murder weapon, more drugs, a cache of illegal weapons and child pornography
on a computer in the home. The majority of the actions by the police to obtain all of the aforementioned evidence was justified, but there are

The Odyssey vs the Lord of the Rings
Comparing the Odyssey to the Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings and Odyssey are two very weird stories in my opinion. The two stories include several similarities. The most noteworthy
similarity of the two that were in common was the use of themes. Both included similar themes such as, life, death, power, brotherly love, myth,
temptation, and journey. One thing I noticed was the use of several different themes included in both stories. Inthe Lord of the Rings the inhabitants of
Middle Earth join to save themselves from enslavement. Centuries before, a ring was forged putting much power into control of who had it. Some
men fell into that power, but an alliance of men and elves defeated it. The Ring was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the case of the Sirens, the theme is revisited simply for its own interest. With their ears plugged, the crew members sail safely by the Sirens' island,
while Odysseus, longing to hear the Sirens' sweet song, is saved from folly only by his foresighted command to his crew to keep him bound to the
ship's mast. Homer is fascinated with depicting his protagonist tormented by temptation: in general, Odysseus and his men want very desperately to
complete their nostos, or homecoming, but this desire is constantly at odds with the other pleasures that the world offers As for the authors, Tolkien
was well–versed and well–educated in the classics. He spoke ancient Greek fluently and would have known the works of Homer inside and out. No
doubt his works were influenced by Homer in at least a minor way. Unfortunately we know very little about Homer, and in fact some scholars'
debate whether he even existed, so drawing comparisons to the two authors may be difficult. What we can consider however is the theory that
Homer was a member of a group of poets called the Homeridae, which literally means hostages. These men were believed to be descendants of
prisoners of war and as such, were not sent to war due to their dubious loyalties. Homer no doubt bore witness to many conflicts and used his writings
to warn against the dangers of war. Similarly, Tolkien confined the Lord of the Rings after he

Summary Of ' Frodo 's ' The Return Of The King '
Frodo who is the fundamental hobbit in the Return of the King, has acknowledged the enormously risky undertaking of taking the Ring up the
inclines to the flames of Mordor, from where it had been made and where it must be crushed. Closer to the end of the astonishing arrangement, the
Ring gets to be an incredible load on Frodo. He battles with its energy and steady allurement all through the book. Anyhow, he has an incredible
companion who he inclines toward through the book. Frodo says this to Sam after the ring is obliterated. (1) "I am happy you are here with me. Here
toward the end of all things, Sam" (Tolkien 250).
Sam Gamgee: Sam is the child of Bilbo 's nursery worker. He is Frodo's closest companion, and is his sidekick on the journey to annihilate the ring...
Sam and Frodo end up on the trail to Mordor alone discovering a wide range of threat, more than they ever accepted there could be. Sam is likewise
forever there for Frodo. Gandalf: After he kicks the bucket in the association of the ring by falling in the abyss, he comes back to end up Gandalf
the white. This wizard helps and aides the hobbits in the pulverization of the ring. He says this after he gets together with the fellowship once more.
(2) "The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now
mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater" (Tolkien 112).

The Lord Of The Ring Essay
It takes time for a person to developed, no one knows who they are from the very beginning. People/characters go through events in their life that
changes them for better or for worse. In The Lord of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien we encounter many character that shows growth but one character that
develops for the better is Aragorn. The first thing we are told about Aragorn is fromGandalf letter to Frodo "Not all gold glitter" which tells the reader
to not underestimate him, but when Aragorn is first introduced in the story, we assume he is just a ranger and nothing more, he doesn't seem like
someone which much help or of use but it turns out that he is actually Isildur heir which makes him the rightful king of Gondor, and as we later see in
the novel one of the biggest help they could of find. Aragorn's character grows so much from his motivation to protect middle earth, his interaction
with the people around him and finally his acceptance as role of king. The first key characteristic for Aragorn character would have to be his
motivation to protect middle earth form Sauron evil. Throughout the novel we see how Aragorn motivation encourages him and pushes him to continue
on with his mission and the journey. His first mission was to get Frodo to Mordor to destroy the ring. which he does with the company of the ring. but
even when they get separated Aragorn does not let the journey end. He knows It can't just end without doing anything so he takes action to complete

Bilbo's Journey In The Fellowship Of The Rings
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien is a book about many things. Mostly it's an adventure of a lifetime for a young hobbit named Frodo. In
The Fellowship of the Ring there are two hobbits named Bilbo, and Frodo Baggins. Bilbo is Frodo's uncle who went on an incredible adventure and
obtained a ring from a hobbit named Gollum. That ring once belonged to Sauron, the dark lord of Mordor. Without knowing that fact, Bilbo had kept
the ring for years. Eventually his dear friend Gandalf the Grey had suspicions of the rings, and had Bilbo give it to his heir Frodo before he left for
Rivendell. Frodo received a mission from Gandalf to get rid of the ring in Rivendell, the home of the elves. To accompany Frodo on his journey, three
other young hobbits went along. Those hobbits were Sam, Pippin, and Merry. Along their journey to Rivendell they came across many obstacles, but
they finally made it. When they arrived they had met Bilbo there. Elrond, the elf king decided to send with more help in the quest ... Show more content

Bilbo was drawn to the ring along with anyone else that was near it, but no one ever knew why. Gandalf had his suspicions about the ring, and
when he confirmed his suspicions he needed to stop it, but he couldn't do it himself. He needed the help of the young hobbit, Frodo. He had Frodo
take the ring to Rivendell to learn more about the ring. When he arrived to Rivendell he met with a counsel of elves who explained the Ring to him.
They told him about Sauron, and the creation of the ring. "You will learn that your trouble is but part of the trouble of all the western world. The
Ring! What shall we dowith the Ring, the least of rings, the trifle that Sauron fancies? That is the doom that we all must deem." ( Tolkien 236). This

Good And Evil In J. R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings
J.R.R. Tolkien writes to a friend on the The Lord of the Rings as a religious work regardless of the absence of God or modern conceptions of Heaven
and Hell. Tolkien himself lived as a Catholic. The influence of Tolkien's religious affiliation through God's gift of free will onto humanity trickles into
the inhabitants of Middle Earth with the bestowment of their own free will. Free will and minor instances of outside influence enables the destruction
of the One Ring and saves Middle Earth from the ultimate destruction and enslavement by Sauron.
The text lends itself to the reading of good and evil in opposition with each other or as evil being the absence of good. The Ring and its master,
Sauron, exist as powerful beings able to assert their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There exists an argument that Tolkien created impossibly clear divisions between good and evil, butThe Lord of the Rings opens up a world of much
more complex and fascinating dynamics. The Nazgul, arguably the iconic "bad guys" of the novel, once lived as mortal kings who fell under the
corrupted influence of the ring's power due to their own pride. Gollum wrestles with his alter–ego, Smeagol, and almost overcomes his own darkness
but ultimately chooses evil after Sam's final rebuke. Only the orcs and the dark lord himself exist as possible faces to pure

Christ Figure In J. R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings
The Lord of the Rings has many Christ figures in it. Most people think that Gandalf is the only Christ figure, but he is not. Because Tolkien did not
like allegory there are many others. Such as Samwise Gamgee, Frodo Baggins, Aragorn, and Tom Bombadil. Aragorn is a Christ figure because he
is the true and rightful king. Aragorn, at first, seems to be an insignificant character. He seems to be just a news bearer. As the reader gets to know
more about Aragorn they learn what he truly is. He is the true King, or in other words the King of all. Not only to the reader did it seem that he was
insignificant, but also to his fellow companions:

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we
are healed.
This poem and scripture, as shown above, are very similar. When Tolkien wrote "All that is gold does not glitter", it was him trying to tie a connection
in between him and Christ when Isaiah wrote, "and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him." What this is actually saying
is what happened to Christ. When everyone saw Christ teaching they just thought he was a carpenter's son and did not listen. They had judged him,
think that gold has to glitter. When in reality, "All that is gold does not glitter." (170)
Even before he was King, Aragorn number lessly shown aspects of what a true king does. He showed kindness throughout the whole story. He had
asked forgiveness when it was needed. Even though some could not see him as a true King he was. He wandered his whole life looking to help. He
was just full of service. Aragorn did what he could do everytime. "A little further there is a place where we can rest for a little. There I will do what I
can for you. Come, Boromir! We will carry them."

Star Wars Archetypes
The archetypes in Lord of the Rings and Star wars that I have chose for this essay are the Loyal retainer, The task, and light v.s. Dark. I will do a
comparison of each movie with the three archetypes. In Lord of the Rings the loyal retainer is Samwise Gamgee, and in Star Wars the loyal retainers
are Han Solo, C–3PO and R2–D2. The next archetype is the task. The task in Lord of the Rings is for Frodo to keep the ring safe and to keep others
away who are tempted by it, to use it against Sauron. The task in Star wars was to save the princess and destroy the death star. The last archetype is
light v.s dark. In Lord of the Rings, light v.s. dark appears when the fellowship tries to defeat Sauron. Light v.s. Dark in Star wars is when Luke and his

Dark, light meaning good and dark meaning evil. In The Lord of the Rings, the fellowship represents the light and Sauron represents the dark. The
fellowship represents the light side because they are in possession of the ring and they have to bring the ring to Mount Doom to destroy it. The
ring will bring on evil and bad situations and if it were to get in the hands of any of the other members of the fellowship or anyone on Sauron's side
then evil would take over and Sauron would be the new leader. The Dark would of course be Sauron. Sauron is controlling Gollum to try and take
possession of the ring, therefore he is to be around Frodo so that he can take the ring. There is a good and bad side to Gollum, one side wants to be

The Lord of the Rings: Our Motivation in Committing Evil Acts
The following analysis deals with the nature and source of evil and whether, given our innate motives and moral obligation, we willingly choose to
succumb to our desires or are slaves of our passion. From this argument, I intend to show that our human nature requires that we play into our desires
in order to affirm our free will. This is not to say that our desires are necessarily evil, but quite the opposite. In some sense, whatever people actually
want has some relative value to them, and that all wanted things contain some good. But given that there are so many such goods and a whole
spectrum of varying arrangements among them, that there is no way we can conceive anything as embodying an overall good just because it is to some

Secondly, our actions are no more than effects of our prior desires, and changes result from some pre–existing motives, thus preserving continuity in
our personal identity. Thirdly, we cannot live without some kind of morality, and every human culture functions with one. And fourthly, every subject
brought up by fantasy stems from reality.
The Argument:
Lord of the Rings conveys the longstanding struggle between good and evil and delves into its relationship to the power of personal free choice.
The novel by J.R.R. Tolkien has been brought to life by the magic of computerized special effects as almost every element of the author's vision is
recreated in the film. Although Tolkien intended his reader to imagine through his words the fantasy in which Lord of the Rings takes place, film
allows us to hear and see more vividly the story, and more importantly, "gives us the freedom to choose, to select one detail over another." As such,
whereas words are always the same in Tolkien's novel, the image on the screen changes continually as we redirect our attention to different images each
time we watch the film. Although, the film can never be a substitute of the rich and complete experience of the novel, it complements it in ways that
we've anticipated for some time, and for Tolkien, would be unimaginable.
The story follows the journey of a hobbit, Frodo Baggins. When presented with the formidable task of

The Lord of the Rings: Ents and Ecology
The Lord of the Rings has many themes throughout its three books, but the one theme that I find to be most prevalent is that of ecology. Nature is, if
not the strongest, then one of the strongest images Tolkien uses in The Lord of the Rings, he shows us a world that he calls "green and good" and we
see the people of Middle–Earth fighting to save this world. In this paper we will be looking at one of these books; The Two Towers. Also we will be
looking at the film version directed by Peter Jackson. We will examine the theme of ecology through two of the main characters of both this book and
film. Treebeard (voiced by John Rhys Davies) is the eldest of the Ents; he is the chief representative of nature in Middle–Earth (where the Lord ... Show

We can feel the conflict shaping, surrounding these two opposing views. We can see the brewing of a war. On one side, we have Treebeard and all
of the Ents and on the other side are Saruman and his army of Orcs. In both book and film one thing is quite clear, in Saruman's bid for power and
destruction he chose the right army. Orcs are the antithesis of harmony with the natural world. They are violent creatures meant only for destruction
and war. Orcs are unnatural creatures, counterfeits made by Sauron in imitation of the elves, and thus they clash with the natural world, (Tolkien 91).
They are at odds with nature, being outside of it and meet it only with senseless violence and destruction. Treebeard explains this in the film version.
"They come with fire. They come with axes. Knawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning, destroyers and usurpers. Curse them," (Jackson). We see
the Orcs as emotionless and merciless creatures, except for their insurmountable rage and hatred for all that is good. That is to say that they do not
love the living things or the growing things, such as everything. The Orcs tend to be viewed as mindless weapons, they are but an extension of
Saruman's "white hand" and the driving force of Saruman's push to destroy the forests and end the world of men. The battle of Treebeard and
Saruman is a small conflict in the greater war over the Ring of Power, but no

After reading the novel, "The Fellowship of the Ring," written by J.R.R. Tolkien, one message that J.R.R. Tolkien has shown to the readers throughout

The Sauron of Santo Domingo
The many references by Junot Diaz to J.R.R. Tolkien's universe in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao prove to be more than just an allusion to
the fantastical works. The recurring comparisons of the Trujillato to the power of Sauron are more than just metaphors. They are descriptions. Diaz
uses his references to describe people and situations, in real life, that have no other way of being described. The first direct quote of Oscar de Leon is,
"What more sci–fi than Santo Domingo? What more fantasy than the Antilles?" (6). Diaz gives direct meaning to this statement through Yunior's
knowledge and love of the speculative genre, which he picked up from Oscar, and parallels the world we live in with the fantastical world of

Although Shelob lives in Sauron's domain, he does not have any direct control over her. Also, just as Shelob never hesitates to prey on both man
and orc, so too La Fea "cheated everyone she did business with, including her brother" (139). Diaz uses the allusion to explain even what the sister
of Trujillo thinks, knowing that Shelob does not like to kill her prey right away, instead stinging them and leaving them paralyzed before she actually
kills them. This method is used against Beli as well; when La Fea orders her orcs to capture Beli, she is beaten to the brink of death, but not killed.
The perfection and detail of Diaz's allusion goes much deeper than a simple metaphor, and actually defines who this character is.
When Tolkien originally wroteThe Lord of the Rings, he did so as reference to World War II, which was ongoing at the time. For him, Sauron was a
representation of Hitler; the gaze of His Eye, the spread of industrialization and destruction from the war. For Diaz, Sauron is Trujillo, the gaze of His
Eye, the domination he exerted, as well as the anonymity of his secret police. It was one thing for Diaz to make the comparison of Trujillo to Sauron,
but he now affirms his argument by adding figurative subtext to it. Diaz writes that "Trujillo's beloved Morgul Lords [were the

continues generate and spread in Middle–earth, with the dark conditions in which it flourishes also continuing to spread. The sources of good, or light
start to fade, making it easier to reject the power of light and become consumed by the dark. The expansion of the dark creates a sense of lost hope
and a lack of faith that helped defeat the other kingdoms in Middle Earth. In our world darkness symbolizes and creates a feeling of sadness and
defeat. Thus feeling of defeat can people to feel that evil is stronger and more powerful than good. But Tolkien, does not believe that evil is stronger
than good as he seems to believe that evil can never overcome goodness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To regain the goodness or light, is to remove whatever obscures it, such as Sauron's evil ring. In Tolkien's world, Middle Earth, when the ring is
destroyed, goodness and light is restored to the world, illuminating the world as brightly as it was before. But as the journey of The Lord of the Rings
series tells, the overcoming of obstacles to regain light and goodness can be long, difficult, and comes at a high cost. Even when the light is
restored all of the damage caused by the evil still lingers, sometimes even long after. The depiction of good versus evil in Tolkien's novel is clear,
the goodness is represented by light. The good characters having names such as Gandalf the White, while evil is represented by the opposite. I argue
that Tolkien depicts evil as darkness as he uses dark imagery to represent evil things such as, shadows to represent evil

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is an epic adventure through the mythical world of Middle Earth and the
kingdoms that encompass it. The world is in turmoil, a dark and powerful enemy named Sauron has returned. This story includes many diverse races
throughout this vast continent. Hobbits, elves, dwarves, wizards, and men must once again work together to defeat this long–forgotten adversary. The
ring of power has been found, and the Dark Lord desperately wants it back. The ever–present evil of the ring entices even the most selfless individuals'

With their help the hobbits make it to Rivendell where they are re–united with Gandalf and Bilbo. The Elven Lord Elrond convenes a council where
the ring is discussed at great length and Frodo learns how powerful it truly is, because even the wise wizard Saruman the White has been possessed
by Saruman. "It is perilous to study too deeply the arts of the Enemy, for good or for ill." Saruman's desire for knowledge of the ring left him
vulnerable to Sauron's evil, and now he has become a pawn to the Dark Lord. Also present at this council is Boromir from the kingdom of Gondor.
When he learns of the power of the ring, he immediately desires it and asserts that he will use its great power to destroy their enemy and bring
peace. Elrond wisely responds, "We cannot use the Ruling Ring. That we now know too well. It belongs to Sauron and was made by him alone,
and is altogether evil. Its strength, Boromir, is too great for anyone to wield at will, save only those who have already a great power of their own.
But for them it holds an even deadlier peril. The very desire of it corrupts the heart." It is decided the ring must be destroyed in the place that it was
made, Sauron's kingdom of Mordor. Frodo agrees to accompany and hold the ring, and he is escorted on this quest by: Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli,
Legolas, Boromir, Pippin, Merry, and Sam. Elrond thusly titles the nine of them to be

Harry Potter Comparison Research Paper
Have you ever wondered who would win in a battle between Gandalf and Dumbledore? Whose force was more powerful? I will be discussing and also
comparing the books "Lord of The Rings" by J.R.R Tolkien and "Harry Potter" by J.K Rowling. Both books were a huge success and are widely known
but simply which series was better?
The Lord of The Rings series is set in the age of middle earth which is around 6,000 years before present day. In the series the region is called Eriador
which include lands of the shire which the hobbits occupy, and where some elves live. There is no technology in middle earth , The novel starts out in
Hobbiton but then Frodo, the main character travels through the valley with companions to destroy the ring.

The Thief In J. R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings
I will be applying this criteria to Gandalf, a wizard in the series The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien. Despite not having wounds in his hands,
feet, side and head Gandalf did sacrifice himself for the good of his friends when he battled Balrog, a fire demon, ultimately perishing but later rising
from the dead as a pure white wizard rather than his previous gray form. Furthermore, Gandalf is good with children as he not only is in charge of 4
children throughout his journey but he is also known amongst other smaller children as the wizard with fireworks and great stories. Gandalf is
always seen on horseback or on foot through his travels and despite not being able to walk on water he continuously used his wizard like power to

The Lord of The Rings Universe
Dark, imposing, devious, powerful beyond measure, Sauron is evil personified in the Lord of the Rings universe. He is the be all and end all
when it comes to villiany in the Lord of the Rings tale. He is a major reason that the Lord of the Rings is regarded as a pinnacle of epic fantasy
story telling. But he is not an overly complex villain, with morally gray motivations that some may say are required if an evil character, especially the
central one, is to be regarded as important and beneficial to the plot. But the genius of Sauron's villaint is his absence of complex reasoning or motives
that could be seen as not entirely evil. His one goal is to destroy the world of men. He can't be reasoned with or sympathized with, and this is ... Show

Gandalf describes how it would corrupt him when Frodo asks him to take it, saying "Do not tempt me! For I do not wish to become lie the Dark
Lord himself. Yet the way of the Ring to my heart is by pity, pity for weakness and the desire of strength to do good." This is an important aspect
of Sauron's evil, as it is shwon throughout the story that while there are many that wish to do good, they are not strong enough to resist the Ring, or
what it would do to them. When these characters fail, such as Boromir, it allows the reader to see just how twisted Sauron is, and how heroic and
steadfast the other protagonists, such as Frodo must be in order to accomplish their goals. Frodo isn't the only prominent character to be forced to
become someone greater than who they begin as because of the unstoppable evil of Sauron. Aragorn also comes from humble beginnings to change
for the better. When we are first introduced to his character, he is a ranger. Quiet, lonely and brooding, no one knows much about him, and he keeps
to himself. He described by Frodo as a "strange–looking, weather–beaten man, sitting in the shadows near the wall." This isn't the description one
would think of when describing the heir to the throne of the Kingdom of men, but at the beginning of the story, Aragorn does not fulfill that role. He
is afraid to take responsibility to care for anyone but himself. This is why he is afraid to claim

Mordor's Rings Essay
I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.
It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf–Lords, great
miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these
rings was bound the strength and the will to govern each race. But they were all of them deceived, for another ring was made. Deep in the land of
Mordor, in the Fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a master ring to control all others, and into this ring he poured his cruelty,
his malice and his will to dominate all life. One ring to rule them all. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A last alliance of Men and Elves marched against the armies of Mordor, and on the very slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of
Middle–Earth. Victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone.
It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword.
Sauron, enemy of the free peoples of Middle–Earth, was defeated. The Ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever, but the
hearts of men are easily corrupted. And the ring of power has a will of its own. It betrayed Isildur, to his death.

Corruption Of Power
Power is wanted by many people across the universe, and those that gain it are privileged to many advantages in life. Power can be a good thing and
a bad thing, mostly depending on what type of person gains the power, but in the end, everyone is the same. Great power has the potential to lead to
corruption of the individual, leading to great overlooked weaknesses.
One example of this phenomenon would be the story of Tom Riddle, who, through power's corruption and pure dark magic, was transformed into a
snakelike abomination that struck fear into the hearts of all. As a young boy, he sought power over the other children in the orphanage at which he
stayed, often bullying them both physically and mentally, at one point even hanging a boy's pet rabbit from the attic rafters. As he grew older, he
fell further under the seduction of power, leading him to transform into the monster known as Lord Voldemort. In the end, he became obsessed with
eternal life, performing many deeds in pursuit of immortality, which included the drinking of unicorn's blood and the creation of several Horcruxes.
Because of all the things he had done to preserve his life and gain eternal power while doing so, he lived 13 years of his life as a spirit–like entity, only
possessing the ability to possess animals. In the end, having been depleted of his Horcruxes, he perished by the wand of the only wizard capable of
doing the job, Harry Potter, and consequently, suffered the rest of eternity as a pathetic minuscule form of a human, trapped in limbo forever.
Another example, can be made of Saruman the White, who when confronted with the opportunity to gain great power under the Dark Lord Sauron,
chased his chance to rule part of Middle Earth. He served Sauron with complete allegiance, using Isengard as the main birthing site of Sauron's forces,
namely the Uruk–hai. He was the servant who publicly commanded Sauron's forces, and is the one that led the opposition against the Fellowship of the
Ring for most the War of the Ring. In the end, his fortress of Isengard was vanquished by a squad of Ents, led by Treebeard, along with hobbits
Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. After the battle, Saruman, standing atop his tower was brutally

Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
The most appealing character in the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), directed by Peter Jackson, was the Ring of
Power. Once greater attention is payed to the Ring, there are many hints at it's consciousness, from the statement that the ring has a will of it's own to
the hints at Sauron's very soul being part of the ring. With it's will to dominate and direct alliances to Sauron, it's obvious why the Ring is so enticing
as a character. The One Ring is an extension of Sauron himself, having a certain duality with Mordor's dark lord. While Frodo and Gandalf were
speaking in Bilbo Baggins's house, Gandalf stated, "The spirit of Sauron has endured. His life force is bound to the Ring and the Ring survived ...

but in Galadriel's introduction for the film it is explained that the very essence of the Ring is cruelty, malice, and the will to dominate all life. Then,
only moments later, it is explained that the Ring did not intend for a hobbit to pick it up. An inanimate object cannot have intent or will. The mystery
of what fuels the Ring's desire for control and the intense power it carries is something that tempts the humans in Mordor and sparks curiosity in those

A Medieval Contest
In comparing and contrasting the Arthurian Legends and J.R.R. Tolkien’s book The Fellowship of the Ring, it is almost like a medieval
contest between the two with many of the similarities coming from the customs of the Middle Ages. A look at the make up of the groups involved, the
moral code, the protagonist, the antagonist, the use of supernatural elements and the knightly quest involved in each book shows how alike they are but
yet different.
The Arthurian Legends revolve around the life of the knights during the Middle Ages. A knight would pledge his loyalty to God, his King, fellow
knights and to women in distress. Tolkien’s Fellowship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The moral code of the knights of the Round Table which was renewed at the feast of Pentecost every year was to: “only fight in just
cause, at all times to be merciful, at a all times to put the service of ladies foremost.'; (Malory, p.344.) Sir Gawain’s strength was
increased for three hours every morning but after noon would decrease. Once when in battle with Sir Launcelot to avenge the death of his two
brothers by Sir Launcelot, Sir Launcelot realizes Sir Gawain’s strength is less so he says to him “Sir Gawain, I have
endured many blows from you but I see that you have weakened'; and then turns to King Arthur and says, “My liege, your expedition can
find no honorable conclusion, so I pray you withdraw and spare your noble knights'; (Malory, p.373.) showing mercy and fair play.
Frodo Baggins also takes on a moral code as he accepts his role as the Ring Bearer. Hobbits by nature are fun loving and non–competitive, but Frodo
says to Elrond, “I will take the ring. . .though I do not know the way.'; (Tolkien, p.324) When sitting in the chair of the Guardian Kings

Analysis Of Peter Jackson's 'The Lord Of The Rings'
An individual's actions have the capacity to guide their actions and behaviours. Throughout Peter Jackson's cinematic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings,
the power of an individual's motivations is vividly conveyed, as it influences many character's course of actions. The root of Saruman's motivations is
his allegiance to Sauron, "Together, my Lord Sauron, we shall rule this Middle–Earth." (Saruman, LOTR:TTT, Jackson), as well as supplementary
influences. As for Frodo, his incentives were based on the burden of the One Ring from Bilbo, "Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you
were also meant to have it." (Gandalf, LOTR:FOTR, Jackson), as well as divine intervention. Throughout the entirety of the cinematic trilogy, the ways
in which an individual's motivations direct their actions and behaviours, is vividly conveyed and is imperative to the success and consequences of their
character.
Saruman is seen as a disciple to Sauron, and serves to create an army worthy of him, "Build me an army worthy of Mordor." (Sauron, LOTR:FOTR,
Jackson), so that Saruman could increase the scale of his empire and secure the One Ring. He is depicted as a servant of Sauron; he is referred to as
Sauron's puppet on two occasions –– "He will use his puppet Saruman to Destroy Rohan." (Gandalf, LOTR:TTT, Jackson), "Sauron will use his
puppet Saruman to destroy the people of Rohan." (Galadriel, LOTR:TTT, Jackson); and wishes to gain power and empire for not only himself, but for

Fellowship Of The Ring Book Analysis
J.R. R. Tolkien's classic novel The Fellowship of the Ring was made into a film in 2001 and directed by Peter Jackson. This essay will be examining
this specific film through a worldview perspective. For the purposes of this essay, worldview will be defined as "a perceptual framework". (The
Transforming Vision, pg. 17) Worldviews can be specific to a single person, or generalized to a group of people. The worldview expressed in this essay
through examples from The Fellowship of the Ring will come from the theme of Creation.
This theme of Creation is correlated with the creation of the universe by God, as written in the book of Genesis. God created the heavens and the
earth before Jesus was born; before salvation ever occurred. Similarly, The Fellowship of the Ring opens with a narrative explaining what theOne Ring
was and its importance to the rest of the story. The film does not begin with Frodo saving the day, but rather the history that laid the foundation for his
journey to happen. The ring was forged in the fires of Orodruin by the Dark Lord Sauron after he convinced the elven smiths of Eregoin to forge the
Rings of Power. Although God is nowhere near the same as Sauron, both created something specific to bring glory to themselves: God made the
world, Sauron made a ring. The difference is that God had a holy and righteous reason for creating, while Sauron did it for evil and selfish purposes.
God was able to speak the earth into existence (Genesis 1:3), but Sauron had

Is Lord Of The Rings Allegorical?
Is Lord of the Rings allegorical?
Perhaps the most common comment about J.R.R. Tolkien's, Lord of the Rings, is that it is an epic allegory of the battle between good and evil.
This comment may come naturally after the first reading of the book, however a deeper and more serious analysis could show a more complex
version of the literary text. J.R.R Tolkien wrote 'Lord of the Rings' in between of the two World Wars. Essentially, it is justifiably considered as a book
that allegorically captured what the author and the rest of the civilizations faced by that period of time.
First of all, the horror and the stress of a war, the brutalisation and the constant try not to lose hope. It's also worth of mentioning that the enemy is
coming from the East and threatens to destroy the culture of the West. Then there is the eye ofSauron which can be easily related to the New Order of
the Second World... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, the nature of evil and the mechanisms of action are an important issue in the text, but it is not the only one. 'Lord of the Rings', the most
mature and complex of the texts Tolkien had completed, might not be based on a well structured philosophy, but in the most orthodox principles of
Catholic ideology. The cosmogony of Middle Earth, the pervasive concerns about defeat, the endorsement of the death and the elevation of human
existence, the idea that human beings must lose something in order to achieve what is really worthy, are some of the issues and motivations that drive
the plot of the text. The author himself had mentioned the term 'strictu sensu' which is the christianic ideology, 'the sole creator is God.' Within this
theological context, it's expected to approach the nature of evil of the

To throw it in the eternal fire, which is the only place the ring, can be destroyed, but they have to travel through Gondor the evil land that Sauron has
taken over. Through Emyn Muil, the Dead Marshes, around Sauron's Black Riders, and Gate, to Mount Doom, and destroy the ring. For the other
party in the story, their goal is to stop Saruman, and his army. First they get the help from Rohan, and its king. Then they travel for the dark tower,
but they are slowed down by the millions of Orcs and corrupt men sent by Saruman. After many days of fighting, and many deaths they move onto the
tower, to find it's outer wall destroyed, all the guards that were left behind dead, and the holes where the Orcs worked flooded, by the tree people the
Ents.
Climax– The climax of this story is at the end of the first book, in this book (The book contains books 3 & 4, which separates the two parties and
there dealings.), when the two armies are fighting, and the Orcs sneak in through an underground ditch. Then they seal it up, but again they sneak
through it again, but are defeated again. Although the Rohan army wins, they had hardly any archers, unlike the Orcs with there poison tipped, black
feathered arrows. For a while I almost thought, that they were going to loose, but they prevailed.

What Does The One Ring Symbolize

  • 1. What Does The One Ring Symbolize J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them" (Tolkien, The Two Towers 233) One of the masters of British Literature, J.R.R. Tolkien was able to create afantasy world with an endless supply of parallelisms to reality. The fantasy world was found in the "Lord of the Rings." Tolkien is able to create wonderful symbolism and meaning out of what would otherwise be considered nonsense. He creates symbolism and meaning by mastering his own world and his own language. To understand the symbolism of The Ruling Ring, or The One Ring, one must understand the events, which take place from the time of the ring's creation until the time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And while he wore the One Ring he could perceive all the things that where done by means of the lesser rings, and he could see and govern the very thoughts of those that wore them."(Tolkien, The Silmarillion 589) The people recognize the power of the One Ring as soon as Sauron puts the One Ring on his finger. They realize that he can control their thoughts. This makes the people decide to remove their rings and never use them. The people and Sauron become bitter enemies while the One Ring remains in Sauron's possession. The One Ring is lost in the river when Isildur defeats Sauron. After passing through many hands, the One Ring is given to Frodo Baggins. This brings us to the beginning of the "Lord of the Rings." The nature of the One Ring can be explained in three distinct ways. The One Ring is a personification of Sauron's power. It is a symbol of evil in general. It also is an object with a mind of its own. As the One Ring's creator, Sauron had placed a great amount of his own power into the ring for the purpose of controlling the other rings. The ring is an extension of Sauron's power. The loss of the ring does not destroy Sauron. Only the destruction of the One Ring can destroy Sauron. His power simply becomes spread around, and his influence affects whoever has possession of the ring. If Sauron gets the ring back, his power will be greater than ever. "If he recovers it, then he will command them all again, wherever they be,

  • 3. Gollum Allegory In J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the character of Gollum has quickly proven to be the single most important character to the plot. This is due partly to his role in the destruction of the One Ring; but more to do with the themes associated with the character of Gollum. Gollum, despite being a disgusting and repulsive creature who had entered the story later than most other characters, embodies the strongest allegory in the entire trilogy. Gollum is an allegory for the depravity of Man because he puts all of his focus on a physical object with absolutely no eternal value, Gollum's devotion to the One Ring led to major physical and mental transformations, and Gollum's eventual obsession with the One Ring brought about the terrible ... But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring. The Quest would have been in vain, even at the bitter end.'" Gollum was so mentally warped, his mind could not perceive the danger between him and the ring. His lack of foresight coupled with his obsession with the Ring brought about the ultimate end of both himself and the One Ring. Smeagol is an allegory for the depravity of Man because he puts all of his focus on a physical object with absolutely no eternal value, Gollum's devotion to the One Ring led to major physical and mental transformations, and Gollum's eventual obsession with the One Ring brought about the terrible end of both himself and the ... Tolkien, is an epic because Frodo Baggins determines his group's fate when making courageous decisions throughout their journey through the vast Middle–earth to destroy the Ring. Frodo Baggins receives the Ring after his cousin's disappearance and takes the responsibility to destroy it. Frodo and his party come across many magical creatures that attempt to harm them. While encountering these creatures and various conflicts, Frodo has to make courageous decisions that determine their fate. Sauron has many assistants throughout Middle–earth attempting to harm Frodo and protect the Ring. After Frodo was stabbed by the Black Riders, they were swept away by a flood at the River. Frodo believes they were destroyed but Gandalf explains that, "You cannot destroy Ringwraiths like that... The power of their master is in them, and they stand or fall by him." (273). The Black Riders are too powerful to destroy because of their master, Sauron. The Fellowship has no other choice but to avoid them. The Fellowship also encounter other aids of Sauron. They are attacked by wolves, followed by an attack from orcs. As Frodo gets closer to destroying the Ring, Sauron has to try much harder to find and end Frodo. Frodo is harmed many times when attacked, but manages to heal his wounds with the help of his friends. The creatures the Fellowship encounter are all very powerful since they are controlled by Sauron. The more powerful they are, they more damage and conflict they will cause to Frodo's goal. • 5. Comparing Odyssey And The Fellowship Of The Ring Daniel Blumen December 2014 E Period Literary Heroes Honors Both The Odyssey and The Fellowship of the Ring are epics depicting the maturity of one of the heros in the poem/book. The Odyssey was translated by Robert Fitzgerald and The Fellowship of the Ring was written by J.R.R Tolkien in 1954. Telemakhos and Frodo must overcome the people that stand in their way to reach their full potential. Frodo Baggins and Telemakhos both overcome impediments and by their mentor figures, reach their maturity. The Fellowship of the Ring takes place in a fictional world namedMiddle–Earth. The title itself tells some aspects of the book. The Ring, a possession of The Dark Lord Sauron, is used for evil deeds. Sauron placed much of his power in the Ring, and controls people through it. Tell me, if my asking does not seem foolish, who is Tom Bombadil" (140)? There are several themes that are in The Fellowship of The Ring, as well as The Odyssey. Some of these themes were displayed in the previous paragraph. Both epics include hospitality, the hero's journey, good vs. evil, and several other themes that the heroes must overcome to reach their goals. The Fellowship of the Ring has really been a great book to read. It entices the reader and immerses them into the world of Middle–Earth. While the book is action–packed, it delivers a strong message of Frodo's best qualities; his persistence, loyalty, and bravery. The Fellowship of the Ring is a book that I would recommend to everybody I know. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the epic by J.R.R Tolkien and am excited to read the sequel next ... • 6. Sauron From The Canterbury Tales The best villain I have ever read about was Sauron from " Lord of the Rings". The Dark Lord Sauron, a servant of Morgoth, the Great Enemy, took his master's place after the First Age. Through the story he makes much trouble for the protagonist and creates wars. Sending many enemies and dragons as such to attack the hero's. Sauron is a nightmare that would do nothing to get the ring's power. Sauron does many things that show he is a villain. I have already said some things about what he did. Sauron attacked the people that were once in peace and all for power. He killed probably thousands or more with his armies. He attacked the elves and the dwarves and more. He did horrible things and has earned the spot as the best villain ever read in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Notes On Gandalf And Sauron #99 Gandalf and Sauron were driving 70 miles per hour down a desolate road at 2 am. Both men were followed and stopped by state troopers Bilbo and Frodo outside of Sauron 's home. Since deer season started, Bilbo and Frodo were looking for hunters with illegal firearms and illegally shot game. The police stopped Sauron and Gandalf in the driveway. In the process of speaking to Sauron, Frodo smelled alcohol on Sauron's breath. Sauron agreed to take a sobriety test, failed it, and was subsequently arrested. Gandalf left the vehicle, and Bilbo confronted Gandalf before Gandalf could enter Sauron 's home. Bilbo asked Gandalf if he could search the vehicle and Gandalf agreed to the search. In the process of searching the vehicle Frodo and Bilbo find a wallet in the glove compartment and a dead body in the back of the van. Upon the discovery of the body, Frodo chases after Gandalf and arrests him inside the house. Inside the home, officers find and seize evidence of drug trafficking and poaching. Following Sauron's and Gandalf's arrest, Bilbo and Frodo realize the possibility that the murder was associated with a drug deal gone wrong. The police obtained a warrant to search the home for further evidence of poaching and discovered the murder weapon, more drugs, a cache of illegal weapons and child pornography on a computer in the home. The two stories include several similarities. The most noteworthy similarity of the two that were in common was the use of themes. Both included similar themes such as, life, death, power, brotherly love, myth, temptation, and journey. One thing I noticed was the use of several different themes included in both stories. In the case of the Sirens, the theme is revisited simply for its own interest. With their ears plugged, the crew members sail safely by the Sirens' island, while Odysseus, longing to hear the Sirens' sweet song, is saved from folly only by his foresighted command to his crew to keep him bound to the ship's mast. Homer is fascinated with depicting his protagonist tormented by temptation: in general, Odysseus and his men want very desperately to complete their nostos, or homecoming, but this desire is constantly at odds with the other pleasures that the world offers As for the authors, Tolkien was well–versed and well–educated in the classics. He spoke ancient Greek fluently and would have known the works of Homer inside and out. No doubt his works were influenced by Homer in at least a minor way. Unfortunately we know very little about Homer, and in fact some scholars' debate whether he even existed, so drawing comparisons to the two authors may be difficult. What we can consider however is the theory that Homer was a member of a group of poets called the Homeridae, which literally means hostages. These men were believed to be descendants of prisoners of war and as such, were not sent to war due to their dubious loyalties. Homer no doubt bore witness to many conflicts and used his writings to warn against the dangers of war. Similarly, Tolkien confined the Lord of the Rings after he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In The Fellowship of the Ring there are two hobbits named Bilbo, and Frodo Baggins. Bilbo is Frodo's uncle who went on an incredible adventure and obtained a ring from a hobbit named Gollum. That ring once belonged to Sauron, the dark lord of Mordor. Without knowing that fact, Bilbo had kept the ring for years. Eventually his dear friend Gandalf the Grey had suspicions of the rings, and had Bilbo give it to his heir Frodo before he left for Rivendell. Frodo received a mission from Gandalf to get rid of the ring in Rivendell, the home of the elves. To accompany Frodo on his journey, three other young hobbits went along. Aragorn, at first, seems to be an insignificant character. He seems to be just a news bearer. As the reader gets to know more about Aragorn they learn what he truly is. The next archetype is the task. The task in Lord of the Rings is for Frodo to keep the ring safe and to keep others away who are tempted by it, to use it against Sauron. The task in Star wars was to save the princess and destroy the death star. The Lord of the Rings: Our Motivation in Committing Evil Acts The following analysis deals with the nature and source of evil and whether, given our innate motives and moral obligation, we willingly choose to succumb to our desires or are slaves of our passion. From this argument, I intend to show that our human nature requires that we play into our desires in order to affirm our free will. This is not to say that our desires are necessarily evil, but quite the opposite. In some sense, whatever people actually want has some relative value to them, and that all wanted things contain some good. The Argument: Lord of the Rings conveys the longstanding struggle between good and evil and delves into its relationship to the power of personal free choice. The novel by J.R.R. Tolkien has been brought to life by the magic of computerized special effects as almost every element of the author's vision is recreated in the film. Although Tolkien intended his reader to imagine through his words the fantasy in which Lord of the Rings takes place, film allows us to hear and see more vividly the story, and more importantly, "gives us the freedom to choose, to select one detail over another." As such, whereas words are always the same in Tolkien's novel, the image on the screen changes continually as we redirect our attention to different images each time we watch the film. Although, the film can never be a substitute of the rich and complete experience of the novel, it complements it in ways that we've anticipated for some time, and for Tolkien, would be unimaginable. On one side, we have Treebeard and all of the Ents and on the other side are Saruman and his army of Orcs. In both book and film one thing is quite clear, in Saruman's bid for power and destruction he chose the right army. Orcs are the antithesis of harmony with the natural world. They are violent creatures meant only for destruction and war. We see the Orcs as emotionless and merciless creatures, except for their insurmountable rage and hatred for all that is good. That is to say that they do not love the living things or the growing things, such as everything. The Orcs tend to be viewed as mindless weapons, they are but an extension of Saruman's "white hand" and the driving force of Saruman's push to destroy the forests and end the world of men. For him, Sauron was a representation of Hitler; the gaze of His Eye, the spread of industrialization and destruction from the war. • 27. Corruption Of Power Power is wanted by many people across the universe, and those that gain it are privileged to many advantages in life. Power can be a good thing and a bad thing, mostly depending on what type of person gains the power, but in the end, everyone is the same. Great power has the potential to lead to corruption of the individual, leading to great overlooked weaknesses. One example of this phenomenon would be the story of Tom Riddle, who, through power's corruption and pure dark magic, was transformed into a snakelike abomination that struck fear into the hearts of all. As a young boy, he sought power over the other children in the orphanage at which he stayed, often bullying them both physically and mentally, at one point even hanging a boy's pet rabbit from the attic rafters. As he grew older, he fell further under the seduction of power, leading him to transform into the monster known as Lord Voldemort. In the end, he became obsessed with eternal life, performing many deeds in pursuit of immortality, which included the drinking of unicorn's blood and the creation of several Horcruxes. Because of all the things he had done to preserve his life and gain eternal power while doing so, he lived 13 years of his life as a spirit–like entity, only possessing the ability to possess animals. In the end, having been depleted of his Horcruxes, he perished by the wand of the only wizard capable of doing the job, Harry Potter, and consequently, suffered the rest of eternity as a pathetic minuscule form of a human, trapped in limbo forever. Another example, can be made of Saruman the White, who when confronted with the opportunity to gain great power under the Dark Lord Sauron, chased his chance to rule part of Middle Earth. He served Sauron with complete allegiance, using Isengard as the main birthing site of Sauron's forces, namely the Uruk–hai. He was the servant who publicly commanded Sauron's forces, and is the one that led the opposition against the Fellowship of the Ring for most the War of the Ring. In the end, his fortress of Isengard was vanquished by a squad of Ents, led by Treebeard, along with hobbits Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. • 28. Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring The most appealing character in the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), directed by Peter Jackson, was the Ring of Power. Once greater attention is payed to the Ring, there are many hints at it's consciousness, from the statement that the ring has a will of it's own to the hints at Sauron's very soul being part of the ring. With it's will to dominate and direct alliances to Sauron, it's obvious why the Ring is so enticing as a character. The One Ring is an extension of Sauron himself, having a certain duality with Mordor's dark lord. While Frodo and Gandalf were speaking in Bilbo Baggins's house, Gandalf stated, "The spirit of Sauron has endured. His life force is bound to the Ring and the Ring survived ... For the Ring yearns, above all else, to return to the hand of its master: they are one, the Ring and the Dark Lord." If Sauron's life force is tied to the Ring, wouldn't that have to mean the Ring is alive as well? The Ring yearns, a response that is inherent to living things. Not only does it feel desire, but in Galadriel's introduction for the film it is explained that the very essence of the Ring is cruelty, malice, and the will to dominate all life. Then, only moments later, it is explained that the Ring did not intend for a hobbit to pick it up. An inanimate object cannot have intent or will. The mystery of what fuels the Ring's desire for control and the intense power it carries is something that tempts the humans in Mordor and sparks curiosity in those who are watching the ... Tolkien’s book The Fellowship of the Ring, it is almost like a medieval contest between the two with many of the similarities coming from the customs of the Middle Ages. A look at the make up of the groups involved, the moral code, the protagonist, the antagonist, the use of supernatural elements and the knightly quest involved in each book shows how alike they are but yet different. The Arthurian Legends revolve around the life of the knights during the Middle Ages. A knight would pledge his loyalty to God, his King, fellow knights and to women in distress. The moral code of the knights of the Round Table which was renewed at the feast of Pentecost every year was to: “only fight in just cause, at all times to be merciful, at a all times to put the service of ladies foremost.'; (Malory, p.344.) Sir Gawain’s strength was increased for three hours every morning but after noon would decrease. Once when in battle with Sir Launcelot to avenge the death of his two brothers by Sir Launcelot, Sir Launcelot realizes Sir Gawain’s strength is less so he says to him “Sir Gawain, I have endured many blows from you but I see that you have weakened'; and then turns to King Arthur and says, “My liege, your expedition can find no honorable conclusion, so I pray you withdraw and spare your noble knights'; (Malory, p.373.) showing mercy and fair play. Frodo Baggins also takes on a moral code as he accepts his role as the Ring Bearer. Hobbits by nature are fun loving and non–competitive, but Frodo says to Elrond, “I will take the ring. . .though I do not know the way.'; (Tolkien, p.324) When sitting in the chair of the Guardian Kings of Gordor at the top of Amon Hen in the Seat of Seeing, Frodo sees the world covered by Orcs, Lorien in smoke and Borenings’s land on fire and finally sees and feels the Eye of Sauron. • 30.

Throughout Peter Jackson's cinematic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, the power of an individual's motivations is vividly conveyed, as it influences many character's course of actions. The root of Saruman's motivations is his allegiance to Sauron, "Together, my Lord Sauron, we shall rule this Middle–Earth." (Saruman, LOTR:TTT, Jackson), as well as supplementary influences. As for Frodo, his incentives were based on the burden of the One Ring from Bilbo, "Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it." (Gandalf, LOTR:FOTR, Jackson), as well as divine intervention. Throughout the entirety of the cinematic trilogy, the ways in which an individual's motivations direct their actions and behaviours, is vividly conveyed and is imperative to the success and consequences of their character. Saruman is seen as a disciple to Sauron, and serves to create an army worthy of him, "Build me an army worthy of Mordor." He is depicted as a servant of Sauron; he is referred to as Sauron's puppet on two occasions –– "He will use his puppet Saruman to Destroy Rohan." • 35. Fellowship Of The Ring Book Analysis J.R. R. Tolkien's classic novel The Fellowship of the Ring was made into a film in 2001 and directed by Peter Jackson. This essay will be examining this specific film through a worldview perspective. For the purposes of this essay, worldview will be defined as "a perceptual framework". (The Transforming Vision, pg. 17) Worldviews can be specific to a single person, or generalized to a group of people. The worldview expressed in this essay through examples from The Fellowship of the Ring will come from the theme of Creation. This theme of Creation is correlated with the creation of the universe by God, as written in the book of Genesis. God created the heavens and the earth before Jesus was born; before salvation ever occurred. Similarly, The Fellowship of the Ring opens with a narrative explaining what theOne Ring was and its importance to the rest of the story. The film does not begin with Frodo saving the day, but rather the history that laid the foundation for his journey to happen. The ring was forged in the fires of Orodruin by the Dark Lord Sauron after he convinced the elven smiths of Eregoin to forge the Rings of Power. Although God is nowhere near the same as Sauron, both created something specific to bring glory to themselves: God made the world, Sauron made a ring. The difference is that God had a holy and righteous reason for creating, while Sauron did it for evil and selfish purposes. God was able to speak the earth into existence (Genesis 1:3), but Sauron had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Is Lord Of The Rings Allegorical? Is Lord of the Rings allegorical? Perhaps the most common comment about J.R.R. Tolkien's, Lord of the Rings, is that it is an epic allegory of the battle between good and evil. This comment may come naturally after the first reading of the book, however a deeper and more serious analysis could show a more complex version of the literary text. J.R.R Tolkien wrote 'Lord of the Rings' in between of the two World Wars. Essentially, it is justifiably considered as a book that allegorically captured what the author and the rest of the civilizations faced by that period of time. First of all, the horror and the stress of a war, the brutalisation and the constant try not to lose hope. It's also worth of mentioning that the enemy is coming from the East and threatens to destroy the culture of the West. The cosmogony of Middle Earth, the pervasive concerns about defeat, the endorsement of the death and the elevation of human existence, the idea that human beings must lose something in order to achieve what is really worthy, are some of the issues and motivations that drive the plot of the text.
