What Makes Poe Unique
Edgar Allen Poe has many unique writing styles that occur often in his stories and poems. His unfortunate childhood led him to write many dark and
creepy stories. These stories often were full of mystery and horror, and Poe was called the father of mystery literature. Poe also often wrote stories
and poems related to his own life such as "Annabel Lee". What really made poe's writing unique, is how skillfully he used dramatic irony,
characterization, and the detailedness of his stories.
Poe's characters display many similar characteristics. In many of his stories, such as "The Tell Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" the main character is
trying to prove there sanity. In "The Black Cat" Poe writes, "Yet mad am I not– and very surely i do not dream." Many people thought poe was crazy,
and poe had to prove his sanity in his own life, which surely influenced his writing. Many of poe's characters are very mysterious. You almost never
learn their name or anything about them which adds to the "Mysteriousness" of the text. In some stories such as "The Cask of Amontillado" you learn
the narrators name by another man saying, "For the love of God, Montresor!" and not from the narrator telling the reader. Poe uses dramatic irony to
feel sympathy for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The amount of detail he uses lets the reader see the story through poes eyes. Poe's "The Masque of Red Death" Displays so much detail, that you know
the colors of the rooms, the furniture and the rooms, and even the way the light goes through the stain glass windows. In "The Fall of the House of
Usher" Poe displays so much detail, that you know how the bricks are beginning to erode away, but the house is still structurally intact, and also how
there is a large crack going down the center of the house. He uses the detail to see his point of view, and to share the same opinions on the event
happening in the story. You can really understand poe in his

How Does The Bird Symbolize In The Raven
The Bird That Made A Man Curious
Once upon a midnight, there was a high schooler who read a deep story. That's me, the author Edgar Allan Poe wrote a gothic literature called "The
Raven". To explain The Raven, the narrator is having a bad case of sorrow and a sort of depression caused by the lost of Lenore. She died and now
he has no one, his friends and everyone has left him. Sitting in his home one night he heard someone or something knocking. Soon after a few trials
of trying to find where this knocking is coming from, opens the window and in flies a raven that perches above his dooron the so called Pallas. The
Raven says nothing but the word nevermore as the narrator asks why the bird came to him.As the Raven stays longer in the home the ... Show more

In turn, the Raven, even through his limited vocabulary, forces the narrator to face the reality that Lenore will return 'nevermore,' a fact that the
narrator does not want to acknowledge"("Edgar Allan Poe..."). Expounding on this source I believe this to be the same as my viewpoint on what this
Raven is really symbolizing. The fact that the narrator doesn't want to realize that his loved one is gone and this Raven is trying to get him to
understand that with his limited vocabulary just shows that the Raven is just a never–ending reminder that she, Lenore is gone along with the rest of
his friends. Also I found in another source that the Raven has other symbols that are the opposite of the usual ones in that it states, " The bird's
darkness symbolizes death; hence, death becomes a constant reminder, an imperious intruder. If taken in a broader context, the poem may be about the
inability of man to escape his ultimate fate"("Meaning of "The

Insanity In Edgar Allen Poe's The Cask Of Amontillado
You're having a serene conversation with one of your so called "friends" when you spontaneously insult them as a joke, but you don't realize that you
infuriate your friend in the process and cause them to vow revenge on you with the only justice being death because they were mentally unstable. This
is exactly what happened in Edgar Allen Poes' short story called "The cask of Amontillado," it is a story about Two men, Montresor and Fortunado,
Montresor is a man who vows to get retribution on Fortunado, a man who merely Insulted his family name. As you can see Montresor is clearly insane
and two other traits you could describe him with would be him being astute and extremely determined. In conclusion, there are three main traits that ...

I also witnessed more of his extreme determination when he sent all of the attendants away so he could have the palazzo to himself by using reverse
psychology. Overall, we can tell that Montresor is very regulated to a certain objective or vow and is ruthless until he feels accomplished and
satisfied. Montresor shows that he is a very astute and intelligent person throughout The Cask of Amontillado by using people so no one would
discover his stealthy plan. An astute action that Montresor does is when he uses reverse psychology to get the attendants out of the Palazzo I know he
knows that he is doing this on purpose because he says, "I had told them that I should not return until the morning, and had given them explicit orders
not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was
turned." Another intelligent thing he does to insure that his plan succeeds is when he keeps bringing up Luchesi when talking to Fortunado, he does
this to make Fortunado stubborn and insist on following him into the catacombs. Therefore, we now know that Montresor was extremely clever and
could easily play people to his advantage which made him even more dangerous since he's a ruthless lunatic. In Summary, this

Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, artist, pundit and editorial manager best known for reminiscent short stories and lyrics that caught the
creative energy and enthusiasm of peruses around the world. His inventive narrating and stories of puzzle and frightfulness brought forth the cutting
edge criminologist story. A considerable lot of Poe's works, including "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Fall of the House of Usher," wound up abstract
works of art. A few parts of Poe's life, similar to his writing, is covered in puzzle, and the lines amongst actuality and fiction have been obscured

From 1831 to 1835, Edgar Allan Poe lived in Baltimore, where his dad was conceived, with
his close relative Maria Clemm and her girl, his cousin Virginia. He started to commit his

Poe never truly knew his folks – Elizabeth Arnold Poe, a British performing artist, and David

Words to Describe Edgar Allen Poe Essay
Words to Describe Edgar Allen Poe "Hoaxter, liar, impostor, and plagiarizer" (45) are words Kaplan used to describe Edgar Allan Poe. Poe as he
claimed to be, was the best when it came to deception and perversion. In living his life and even in his manner of negotiating death, Poe was a
captive of the imp of perversity. But with art as his shield, the realms of perversity became a haven for his troubled soul. . . Perversion is a complex
strategy of mind, with its unique principles for regulating the negotiations between desire and authority. To achieve its aims, the perverse strategy
employs mechanisms of mystification, concealment and illusion, devices characteristic of the tales of Edgar Allen Poe. The perverse strategy is, as...

In some ways, "The Raven" shows Poe at his greatest image–making power, in which part of his life serves as a blueprint. His perfect illustration of the
prison–like environment, on top of the inner turmoil of the narrator, creates a detailed, terrifying picture for the reader. At first glance, it is easy to
see that Poe wrote this poem in reference to someone he truly loved. The problem is to know exactly who that person, Lenore, is, because without
having that information, it would be impossible to understand the four points Poe is trying to make. By looking at the obvious, anybody can decide
that Lenore was no longer part of the real–human–world. And if we accept that fact, we could rule out Virginia Poe, Edgar's wife, and Elmira Royster,
to whom Poe was engaged in 1826, because they were both alive when "The Raven" was being composed in 1844. Since that leaves us with Poe's
mother and foster mother whom he dearly loved, it would seem appropriate to say that Lenore was a nickname Edgar used to represent one of his
dead mothers. But there are more problems to this equation. First of all, Poe's real mother died when he was only two years old and for him to feel
that much pain because of her death seems ridiculous. Second, his foster mother died in 1829; why would he wait fifteen years to express his
feelings? And third, in a poem titled "Lenore," which Edgar wrote around the same time as "The Raven," he made it clear that Lenore was

Biography of Edgar Allan Poe
"There are two bodies – the rudimental and the complete; corresponding with the two conditions of the worm and the butterfly. What we call "death,"
is but the painful metamorphosis." Edgar Allan Poe was a poet who grew up with theater in his blood and who became known for his style of
literature. First I will inform you of his birth along with his parents, then I will tell you about his childhood and education, after that I will follow up on
his mysterious death.
Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in a cheap rooming house near the Boston Common.
Meltzer, the author of one of Poe's Biography, states that "Eliza [his mother] married a young Baltimore law student, David Poe Jr."

Since we have talked about his childhood along with his adulthood, let's move onto to his later years and his death
Edgar Allan Poe passed away on October 7, 1849 at the age of 40 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Walsh, the author of The Mysterious Death Of Edgar Allan Poe, said that "The Immediate Cause of death given was "congestion of the brain," or
"inflammation of the brain," catch–all medical phrases of the day."
In his own time and even decades later, no one really questioned the verdict that the culprit was liquor.
No one seriously questioned that Poe died as a result of complications arising from a drunken debauch (de batch).
Drunkenness explained all, it was decided; otherwise, if Poe had been found in extreme distress in a public place, that standard procedure would have
been followed, and much more would now be known.
What was assumed was some sort of physiological or orthostatic collapse.
Science in that day was unable to define it further.
There is a lot of theories on how he died:
A fatal heart condition of long standing was postulated, as was epilepsy, as well as a diabetic coma complicated by liver damage, hypoglycemia, and

The Cask Of Amontillado Compare And Contrast
The short story "The Cask of Amontillado" can be interpreted in about one thousand different ways. My initial impact on the story is far – far different
from what I think the story is really about after thinking about it for a day or two. But, I think they are both equally feasible. So I will tell you about
both of them in the paragraphs below. "The Cask of Amontillado" is a strange, at first puzzling, very Edger Allen Poe–esque tale about a clearly
mentally unstable narrator named Montresor who lures an intoxicated former friend, named Fortunato, into a system of tunnels and traps him at the
end by chaining him to a wall and constructing a wall of his own to make sure he stays there to die. My initial take was it was a story very similar

The Cask Of Amontillado Symbolism Essay
In The Cask Of Amontillado, author Edgar Allen Poes use of the words "I" and "Fortunado" are to be read symbolically. The "I" character, who
doubles the part as the narrator, takes on a persona of psychotic, revenge filled thoughts. Poe most likely used these two specific names to represent the
characters because without them, the story would be read quickly without any thought as to whom these actual characters speak for. When a tale
commonly has designated character names, plot line, climax and resolution, it is more often than not a story you aren't likely to remember. Poe used
noteworthy names throughout the drama to make the reader really think about who "I" and "Fortundo" represents in the eyes of a community.

In The Cask Of Amontillado , Fortunado is conned. The narrator acts kindly, nonchalantly and overall friendly towards him. The narrator finds a way
to gain Fortunados trust in him. Fortundao held so much faith in "I" that he was completely willing to go into a dark and scary catacomb with him.
The initial reason Fortundo had agreed to go into the underground cemetery with his acquaintance was to retrieve an item of only materialistic value.
The wealthy often end up overwhelmed with their privilege they live life decadently. Fortundo, though of a higher class, was of a lower intelligence.
Understandably, he was beyond drunk upon arriving at the catacombs, but I solely believe that even impaired judgment could see that this idea was
catastrophic. Even the sound of a name like "Fortunado" inclines the reader to think that this man is either royalty or of a wealthy status. Fortundos
name within itself represents the entire upper society. The affluent people in this social class have a reputation of being naive, un–responsible, and
merciless to the rest of society. When you are rich, you arent worrying nor even deliberating how much of a better life you have than

The Fall of the House of Usher: Imagery and Parallelism
The Fall of the House of Usher: Imagery and Parallelism In his short story "The Fall of the House of Usher", Edgar Allen Poe presents his reader
with an intricately suspenseful plot filled with a foreboding sense of destruction. Poe uses several literary devices, among the most prevalent, however
are his morbid imagery and eerie parallelism. Hidden in the malady of the main character are several different themes, which are all slightly connected
yet inherently different. Poe begins the story by placing the narrator in front of the decrepit, decaying mansion of Roderick Usher. Usher summoned his
childhood friend, the narrator, to his home by sending a letter detailing only a minor illness. After the narrator arrives and sees... Show more content on

These stories , in their own way are somehow parallel to the story in "The Fall of the House of Usher". The painting was a painting done by Henry
Fuesli. "Fuesli was noted for his interest in the supernatural."(Poe, 127). "A small picture presented the interior of an immensely long and
rectangular vault or tunnel, with low walls, smooth, white, and without interruption...and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendor."
(Poe, 127). This description can be interpreted as a place of sorrow, where the atmosphere is morbid and cold. Most people have art in their homes
for reasons of cheering up the place. All this painting did was add morbidity and coldness to the house. The poem entitled "The Haunted Palace"
makes a connection between the house and its inhabitants. The poem seems to parallel to the plot of "The Fall of the House of Usher". "Once a fair
and stately palace––snow white palace––reared its head"(Poe, 127). This describes the past of the Usher home. It was once a stately mansion, but as
time went by the house deteriorated along with the conditions of the people occupying it. We get to the present in both the story and this excerpt "but
evil things in rokes of sorrow, assailed the monarchs high estate"(Poe, 126). This is what is happening to the Usher house now. The house along with
its inhabitants are full of sorrow. Poe uses differing themes of fear, death, and freedom throughout the

Symbolism In The Conqueror Worm
The Conqueror Worm by Edgar Allan Poe is a poem embedded with deep symbolism. Death is a common thing among Edgar Allen Poe's poems and
the conqueror worm is definitely not an exception. The very theme in the story is that we are like puppets in the play of life, putting on a show for a
higher deity. Edgar Allan Poe did a good job weaving the theme in with tons of symbolism, however the idea that death conquers all is easily found if
you look close enough. First indication of the theme is in line 12 where it clearly states that "Mere Puppets they who come and go at the bidding of
vast formless things." that portion from the first stanza shows the Poe viewed people as puppets, and that humanity or "the puppets" come and go at

Another person's whose name misinterprets his given life is Montresor, the narrator. Poes creativity and use of his misleading is rarely used in modern
day novels or movies. His main character Montresor, the protagonist, is revealed at the end that he is the villain throughout the whole story, not
Fortunato. Montresor is also known as a friendly, well–known man from the way the characters stated their friendship scale with him. The characters

Most are afraid of this happening, but there is no way they will ever be able to escape it. This happening is death. Edgar Allen Poe's "The Masque
of the Red Death" is an iconic piece of gothic literature with a dark theme. He uses normal objects in his story such as rooms and hallways and gives
them a deeper meaning to connect to the moral of the story. Poe's short story is heavy with symbols which lead to the ultimate theme of his piece that
there is no way to escape the inevitable no matter what your social standing may be. Poe showcases this thought through his many forms of symbolism

Themes Of Edgar Allan Poe
Another of Poe's strong emotions was anger, leading him to seek revenge. Seasonal changes just as life changes, winter to spring to summer and back

Edgar Allan Poe's life experiences had a adult impact on the topics and themes of his writing. One of the most common themes in Edgar Allen Poe's
poems and clerestory relating to death are "The Black Cat," "The Masque of the Red Death," " Cast of Amontillado," "Annabel Lee" and " The
Raven". " 'Prophet!' aforesaid I, 'thing of evil–prophet still, if bird or devil!–'" This in my opinion relates to how he did not know many stuff.
Montresor defect revenge and says, "nemo me impune lacessit." In other words, "No one attack me without punishment." As they traverse along a
hallway to the keep, Montresor touch at his plot. Edgar was an unusual omi to say the least, but he wrote about the most deadly scary things that
are in the back of our minds when we walk into a dark room or turn a corner in that erie basement many of us have, and in that way he stays with us.
They are some examples that empahsis this. An example of the influence of alcohol is "The Black Cat." Here, Poe writes about committing
gruesome acts while he is intoxicated. Poe had a cottage in Fordham New York; a nearby university was believed to be the source of the ringing bells.

Romanticism In The Great Gatsby
F. Scott FitzgeraldF. Scott Fitzgerald is in many ways one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century. In his first novel, This Side
of Paradise, Fitzgerald epitomized the mindset of an era with the statement that his generation had, grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought,
and all faiths in man shaken(Fitzgerald 307). Aside from being a major literary voice of the twenties and thirties, Fitzgerald was also among The Lost
Generations harshest and most insightful social critics. In his classic novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald blatantly criticized the immorality, materialism,
and hedonism which characterized the lifestyles of Americas bourgeois during the nineteen–twenties. Collectively, Fitzgeralds novels and short stories
provide some of the best insight into the lifestyles of the rich during Americas most prosperous era, while simultaneously examining major literary
themes such as disillusionment, coming of age, and the corruption of the American Dream. The life ofF. Scott Fitzgerald is marked by as much, if not
more, romanticism and tragedy than his novels. Throughout Fitzgeralds life, he unsuccessfully battled alcoholism, depression, and himself, in a quest
for both personal and literary identity. At the age of twenty–three, Fitzgerald published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, to critical raves and
unimaginable economic success. Shortly after the publishing of this novel, Fitzgerald was able to coerce Zelda Sayre into marriage. This

Who Is The Unnamed Narrator In The Raven
The Analyzation and Depiction of Poe's Poems
(Thesis) If we would analyze characters from Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" and "The Tell–Tale Heart" what importance did they have in the poems
and why would Poe depict these characters this way? In the two poems, they have an ongoing theme of death but depicted in a different way. The
unnamed narrator in "The Raven" seems to be grieving for his deceased love Lenore, based on my opinion the unnamed narrator could be depicted this
way because around the time this poem was published Poe's wife Virginia was dying of tuberculosis. While in "The Tell–Tale Heart" another unnamed
narrator seemed like he enjoyed murdering the old man, so in my thoughts, I believe Poe depicted the narrator in this way because ... Show more

We have an unnamed narrator, the old man, and the police. The narrator in the story tells us that he has no hatred towards the old man even going on
to mention that he loves the old man and that he wasn't interested in his gold, but his motive to execute the old man was because of his eye as I quote
he said "He had the eye of a vulture ––a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees ––very
gradually ––I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.[7–8]". Speculating that the narrator could be Poe
but, as a persona. The old man the only major impact to the story from my perspective that I could tell was his eye, because that's the only motive
why the narrator chose to kill the old man. But the old man could have a more bigger perspective in Poes mind. The old man could be a perspective
of what Poe wanted to do to his adopted father John Allan. Poe's stepfather didn't want anything to do with Poe and sent him away when he was given
the opportunity to do so. In the story when he mentioned the eye of a vulture he could be referring how Poe's stepfather basically neglected him and
wanted to get rid of him. Lastly, the police I don't understand any significance towards them besides arresting the

Contrasting Old Mother Savage and The Tell–Tale Heart
Writers may use different techniques to get the same effect out of the audience. In the short story, "Old Mother Savage" by Guy Du Maupassant, a
tragic story of a woman who losses everything is told. The story is scary in that it has an ending that one would not expect. Also, it can be looked at as
a sad story because the mother seems to be sad throughout the entire story. At the end theonly thing that she has to be satisfied about is that her

This is the author's first attempt at making the audience have sympathy for the woman. In our modern day society, we would think that this woman is
abandoned and maybe might need some kind of physiological attention. This is a contrast to Poe who wanted people to get the impression that the
speaker in his story was a mad man. They both seem to want you to have a kind heart when thinking about the two, however, Poes' character dismisses
his credibility when he starts to talk about his reasoning behind his killing.
The story goes on to say that the woman was forced to care for four young men who were enemies that took over the city. But the woman does not
seem to mind because they treat her with a great deal of respect and they also provide her with companionship. One day she receives a letter telling
her that her son was killed: "She did not cry. She stood motionless, stricken, dazed so that she could feel no more" (Du Maupassant, 3). One can argue
that this is the point were the woman's' feelings leave and the only thing in her heart is revenge. This is the turning point in the story and at this point
the reader is worried about what the woman will now do. When she returns home, she makes the rabbit that the soldiers have captured for the day. At
this point not a word is said about what the woman is planning on doing, which leaves the audience in suspense. When killing the rabbit the speakers

Violence In Edgar Allen Poe's 'To Tell-Tale Heart'
The Formation of Main Ideas A gruesome act. A cold hearted murder. In Edgar Allen Poe's, "To Tell
–Tale Heart" implicit and explicit main ideas are
formed using the literary devices from Thomas C. Foster's How to Read Literature Like A Professor. Poe, forms the explicit main idea that violence
is used to gain insight and personal amelioration. Additionally, using a character's journey for self knowledge Poe implies that the actions a person
take may be responsible for psychological instability. Foster explains the reasoning behind violence in literature by stating, happens for a specific
reason and often times stands for a symbol or metaphor (95). The violence in "To Tell–Tale Heart" can stand as a symbol of satisfaction. Using
violence, it allows a person to gain power and superiority over themselves and others. Although committing the murder didn't result in the solution,
the narrator was hoping for, it did allow him to gain insight on the situation. He felt as if had no other option but to commit such a horrific act. The
murder allowed him to feel powerful. Believed that at first that his problems had no longer exist, acting as a front for the true problem at hand.
Causing the narrator to later become insane and irrational hearing more voices in his head and eventually giving himself up to the police. Many
people use their actions as a way achieve their goals to result in personal satisfaction. This idea is explicitly stated throughout Poes, "To Tell
–Tale
Heart".

In the history of literature, there have always been different themes and genres of writing. But few have been as different or unique as that of the
"gothic" literature. Of all the gothic authors of history, few writing has captured the mind and plunged it into the depths of fear as that of Edgar Allen
Poe. Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," is a story that shows us how deadly being prideful can be. Themes of dishonour, revenge and questionable
justice all come together in this story. In this essay, I will discuss how the setting, irony and the lack of certain details all contribute to thegothic theme
and the spine–tingling effect of the story.
The setting and clothing of the story are two of the key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fortunato himself displays much irony as well. First, his name resembles the word "fortune" and to have good fortune can mean to have good luck,
which is obviously not what Fortunate has, having been left for eternity to perish alone in darkness. Fortunato's clothes are another source of irony. He
wears the clothes of a jester, "He had on a tight–fitting parti–striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells." (70) Since
jesters are often portrayed as trusting and very foolish, this completely describes Fortunato as he willing and unknowingly walks with his murderer
to his doom. Another source of irony is found in almost everything that Montresor says. Every time he speaks to Fortunato, he speaks to him as if he
is his friend. He speaks to him with a sarcasm that is not noticeable. However, since we are inside his head, we know that Montresor is not actually
friends with Fortunato and this ploy is all actually part of his plot to kill Fortunato. In the beginning, Montresor says to himself that "I must not only
punish but punish with impunity." (70) This is ironic when we later find out that Montresor's family motto is "No one provokes me with impunity."
From the motto and the description of the coat of arms we receive, it can be assumed that Montresor's family has had a history of insanity and

The Black Cat By Edgar Allan Poe
Humans are equipped with the most labyrinth work of art known as the mind. Each human being has their own byways that are understood in unique
patterns of complexities. The mind merely acts in the behavior experienced by engrossing into a person 's particular habits, making them an diverse
individual. Nowadays, the world has come to understand these particular patterns through Psychological studies. In order to comprehend that each
mind comes with its own unprecedented code, a person has to just observe. An example of these observation and hands on applications would be Edgar
Allan Poe, a writer and a poet, whom would be absolutely intrigued in these behaviors. His unique interpretation of the human mind could be seen
in "The Black Cat." In this short story Edgar Allan Poe embeds himself as the protagonist who are mere victims of the complexities of the mind
known as revenge, anger, and perversity. "The Black Cat" shows the vital side effects of the mind recognized as revenge, anger, and perversity. This
is witnessed at the very start of the short story where his superstition empowers his actions when he compares his black cat to a witch in disguise. Not
only does his wife and himself believe this, but they also chose to call the cat Pluto. According to Greek Mythology, Pluto, whose greek name was
Hades, was the G–d of the underworld who ruled over everything that was dark (Gill). He completely carried out his supposition when he looks at the

The Tell-Tale Heart Thesis
Someone could feel okay and happy with them self if they killed somebody because of an eye. The narrator in Edgar Allen poes "The Tell–Tale Heart"
kills his own roommate who is a elderly old man because his roommates eye intimidate him. He loves the man dearly but he just can't stand his eye.
The man did no wrong to him. He killed his roommate and might be trying to plead insanity. The narrator should get charged with murder and she
get sent to jail for killing the old man. First, the narrator admits that he wants to kill the old man. He says "I made up my mind to take the life of the
old man " (2). He basically was thinking for a while how and if he should kill his roommate. He put killing the man into thought it wasn't just a sudden

Suspense In Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart
In Edgar Allen Poe's day, he was a very creative and eloquent writer.Though long gone, Poe is still a great writer, but no one has truly taken the time
to analyze and critique Poe's work. Poe is a fantastic writer indeed, which is why Poe's work is effective in making people feel ominous through his
use of suspense, repetition, and point of view in the Tell–Tale Heart.
Poe's work is effective through suspense because once people's anxiousness is relieved, Poe starts up the suspense all over again. This keeps people
on the edge and wanting more. In Poe's popular short story, The Tell–Tale Heart, he includes a suspense scene where a killer is creeping in an old man's
room then talks to the police. " ... when my head was well in the room, I undid the lantern cautiously–oh, so cautiously– I undid it just so much that a
single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye. And this I did for seven long nights." Being so careful as to go into the victim's room for seven nights.
This is a technique Poe uses to make people wonder what will happen next. Using this will have readers feeling frightened and engaged so much
that it will make them feel ominous. " ... of my perfect triumph, placed my own seat upon the very spot beneath which reposed the corpse of the
victim." This makes people feel anxious to see what happens next and how it will play out. By having the killer sit above the corpse, with the police
in front of him, readers are thinking if the killer will strike or if something else

How Poets of the Eighteenth Century Handled Love
How Poets of the Eighteenth Century Handled Love
Love is one of the strongest emotions a person can feel and although it is by far the most beautiful and rewarding sensation a human can experience. It
by far is the most difficult emotion to deal with and understand. Poets through their writing help us reconcile our own experiences with love. Poets are
infamous for expressing emotions such as pain, love and passions associated with this emotion we call 'love.' They allow us an outlet to experience
and express love. Eighteenth century poets: Robert Frost, Emily Dickerson, John Keats and Edgar Allen Poe were infamous for their poetic
contributions to the literary world; because of their extraordinary gifts of expression we are able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Calling the romantic verse of Hunt's literary circle "the Cockney school of poetry," Blackwood's declared Endymion to be nonsense and recommended
that Keats give up poetry. Shelley, who privately disliked Endymion but recognized Keats's genius, wrote a more favorable review, but it was never
published. Shelley also exaggerated the effect that the criticism had on Keats, attributing his declining health over the following years to a spirit broken
by the negative reviews (Symons 299–305). Although Keats's declining health was attributed to tuberculosis, I believe it is possible a broken spirit
and broken heart played a part in his death as well.
Despite the fact that Keats was such a great writer, he didn't get recognized for being the profoundly brilliant writer he was until after his death from
tuberculosis at the tender age of 26. Of his many writings, I appreciate his eloquent expression in his letters as well as his poetry. In a letter to his
sweetheart to Fanny Brawne, dated March 1820; Keats wrote:
Sweetest Fanny,
You fear. Sometimes, I do not love you so much as you wish? My dear Girl I love you ever and ever and without reserve. The more I have known you
the more I lov'd. In every way–even my jealousies have been agonies of Love, in the hottest fit I ever had I would have died for you. I have vex'd you
too much. But for Love! Can I help it? You are

Romanticism in literature was a rejection of many of the values movements such as the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution held as paramount.
For Poe and the writing of the raven was none out of the ordinary for himself as most works that he had produced at the time had a dark theme
usually revolving around the death of a loved one as well as never seeing them again. "Throughout his life, Poe faced problems of failed honor and
insanity–issues that paradoxically help to account for a literary authority that established precedents and patterns of literature in his home region–and
even beyond the South itself. Whether fully conscious of his aims, Poe found ways to deal imaginatively with the inexpressible, the horrors that the
mind can conjure, and the dark side of experience–without revealing any more of the inner torture than he wished to convey to his readership. " (http:/

Pit And The Pendulum Characterization
Characterization is the creation or construction of a character by the author. Characterization can be used effectively when the author is describing the
actions or emotions or thoughts of a character to the audience. In the story the Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allen Poe, he uses characterization to
show that people are afraid of death, because he wants to show that everybody is going to die, and that people can't hide from it.
Poe uses the main character's actions to show how frightened he is about death throughout the story. Poe uses the main character's actions to show that
the main character was afraid about death and that he didn't want to die. For example when it says "The plunge into this pit I had avoided by the
merest of accidents, and I knew that surprise or entrapment into torment formed an important portion of all these dungeon deaths(Allan Poe 9)". This
quote is talking about how his actions connect to the theme of people are afraid of death. PoeВґs use of characterization was effective throughout the
story by showing the main character's behavior. The behavior connects to the theme because in this quote he almost died by falling into the pit. ... Show

Tragic Events In Edgar Allan Poe
Each event in one's life whether important, meaningless, joyful or sickening has an impact on that person's character. Harrowing & tragic events
occur often as it was for Edgar Allen Poe which left a vast impact on his character. This author's stories focus on his wretched life and obstacles
placed in the forms of stories. His unfortunate events turned into eerie, emblematic tales such as "The Raven", "The Black Cat", "The cask of
amontillado" & more which all have twisted plot lines such as horror, sadness, revenge etc. Death was a main factor in not only the life but the
stories of Edgar Allan Poes. "The raven" was based off the death of his wife. Poe fell in love with his cousin at a young age and got married while
she was 13 and he was 27. Yet otherwise tuberculosis is what killed Virginia when she was 24. Thus leading into poe's biggest lows in life as he
took on his alcohol abuse problems. The ravens setting is at a man's house when a raven appears on his door and flies in. The raven continuously
repeats one line through the entire story "Nevermore". This more so taunts this man who is already in a depressed state. Reminding him that he will
never get to retrieve what he has lost forever. This going back to the death of his wife and how he will never get her back. During the lines of the
story comes the word Nepthene. Nepenthe is known to be a mythical drug that can take away memories or in this case his grief and pain (Shmoop

because he did not want to lose another person to illness. Fanny made sure Edgar went to the best boarding schools and got the best education. Poe
attended Misses Dubourg at the age of seven. Then he transferred to Manor House School at the age of 8. At Manor House School, Poe took a
liking to languages and excelled in these classes. Poe was a very bright and gifted student but he did not like school. Eventually, Poe attended the
University of Virginia at Charlottesville but had to leave after a year because of no financial support. After coming home from the University, his
relationship with his foster father became even worse and completely disappeared. Since Poe did not have a close relationship with his foster
family, he rarely signed work with Allan fully written out. He wrote it as an 'A' or left it out entirely throughout his adult life. In 1827, Poe enlisted
in the army but had to leave after a year because he was found guilty of being disobedient and not keeping up with his duties. Also in 1827, Poe

Essay on The Romantic Side of Edgar Allan Poe
Anyone who enjoys literature or movies has the Romantics of the 19th century to thank. The romantic ideals are now so engraved in this societies
thinking that most don't even realize that it is romantic thinking at all. Almost every movie or book nowadays has a trace of romanticism in it.
Romanticism started around the 1800's as a contradiction to rationalism. Rationalism was a thinking that attempted to use rational thinking and reason
to solve the problems being faces at its time. Romanticism is basically the opposite of those thoughts. Romanticism is described as, "a revolt against
Rationalism that affected literature and the other arts, beginning in the late eighteenth century."("Elements of Literature," Page 1179). Romanticism

A man decides to follow a random person in Poe's, "The Man of the Crowd". These few stories and more show Poe's immense creativity. Not only
does Poe show creativity, but the characters in his stories do also. The Romantics were also very interested in the supernatural. This was evident in
a couple of Poe's stories as well. In "Ligeia", the narrator sees a ghost, which is part of the supernatural world. Romantics were just starting to
appreciate and understand the power of the mind. Not much was known about psychology and Poe uncovered many things about the human brain in
his stories. In "The Raven", for example, the narrator just lost a loved one and sees hallucinations and experiences hysteria. These are symptoms of
schizophrenia which can be triggered by the death of a loved one. Dr. Corcoran and Dr. Malaspina say: "For a patient with schizophrenia, the death of
a parent or other loved one... can trigger anxiety, depression and psychotic episodes" (4). This proves that Poe could have been writing about
somebody with schizophrenia, weather he did it on purpose or not. Throughout, the rest of Poe's work, there is common theme of human madness. For
example, as mentioned before, in "The Tell–Tale Heart", Poe writes of a man who murdered somebody because of his eye color which is completely
crazy. The Romantic era focused on the human imagination and the power of the mind, Poe took

Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe 's ' The Death Of A Mother '
Nicole Valdes Ms. Jurado English I November 20, 2015 Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allen Poe, who is mostly the author of mysterious writings has a
way of portraying one 's sensibility in petrifying short stories and poems. Edgar Allen Poe was a very disturbing writer. This author wrote many
short stories and poems based on heartbreaking experiences made in the life of Poe. Having gone through a lot, Poe managed to express his
emotions through writing. And although Poe became well known after he passed, this author has impacted the views of society and life towards
many. Happiness and pain are what caused Poe to become a huge success. Despite his experiences with poverty, loss and gain of love, and the
death of a mother, Edgar Allen Poe has been an inspiration to many by his short stories and poems of terror and obscurity. After Poes parents
passed away at the age of 3, the toddler was adopted by a wealthy couple in Virginia. At 13, Poe had thought of becoming a writer but never made
that dream come true. In college, Poe attended the University of Virginia but was in debt. The writer began to gamble in order to pay the expenses.
Later, with almost no money left, Poe burned his furniture being the only option to keep warm. Ashamed of being poor, Poe headed back home to see

Edgar Allen Poe's: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue"
In Edgar Allen Poe's short story, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", a classic detective story is played out in a seedy Paris suburb. The
story begins as the narrator meets Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin, a poor but well–read young man.
As they become close friends, they live together in seclusion, departing only briefly each evening to take introspective strolls along the dark Paris
streets.
Soon both the reader and the narrator begin to see Dupin's intimate knowledge of the human mind, always an underlying element in Poe's prose.

Two literary devices that are evident are Poe's creative use of point of view and gothic setting.
"The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is told in the first person point of view, presumably Poe's view, acting as a narrator. This point of view
provides for a more intimate relation of the sordid tale, stating, " I often dwelt meditatively upon the old philosophy of the Bi–Part Soul, and
amused myself with the fancy of a double Dupin–the creative and the resolvent. (p. 4)"
Without this personal point of view, the reader would be oblivious to Dupin's separate personalities. This "up close and personal" view of
Dupin is known because of the first person narration. Another point of view is also useful.
Monsieur Dupin solves the mystery and to do so, must take on an entirely new point of view, that of the criminal. Using this technique, Dupin delves
into the mind of a careless Frenchman and his pet orangutan. Poe also incorporates a gothic setting into the story. The gothic setting is absolute.
Located on the
Rue Morgue–"Death Street," the title foreshadows a catastrophe. The murder scene is a grotesque setting complete with hideously
dismembered bodies and severed heads. The Paris suburb of Faubourg–St.Germain gives the mystery an aura of gloom and sets the stage for violence.
The home of the pair is described as, "...a time–eaten and grotesque mansion, a style which suited the rather fantastic gloom of our common

The Impact Of Losing A Loved One
Poe is suggesting that the impact of losing a loved one can be something that you will never forgot. For example in his poem "Annabel lee" he says
" for the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams of the beautiful annabel lee". This quote can show how he states you can never forgot a
loved one because he is reminded of her by just the moonlight alone showing that other things remind him of her telling us that he will never forgot
about her. This can also be an example for the general audience of this poem because it can tell the audience how hard it is to forgot about a loved

The short story, " The Yellow Wallpaper", written by Charlotte Gilman, and "The Cask of Amontillado" written by Edgar Allan Poe, are stories in
which the plots are very different, but share similar qualities with the elements in the story. "The Cask of Amontillado" is a powerful tale of revenge, in
which the narrator of the tale pledges revenge upon Fortunato for an insult. "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a story about a woman, her psychological
difficulties and her husband's therapeutic treatment of her illness. She struggles over her illness, and battle's her controlling husband. The settings in
both stories are very important, they influence the characters, and help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Irony occurs when the reader becomes painfully aware of what will become of Fortunato, even though he continues his descent into the catacombs in
pursuit of the wine. Poe also adds to this effect, by calling the man Fortunato, who is anything but fortunate, and has him dressed in a clown's costume,
which portrays him as a fool. While the settings in the two stories are very different, the different settings create the elements to the stories.
The narrator in "The Yellow Wallpaper" becomes haunted by the wallpaper in her room. The setting takes place in the room, she dislikes the room
from the moment she sees it and fells suffocated by it. Her feeling of suffocation and being haunted by the wallpaper helps the reader become more
aware of her motivation for tearing the wallpaper down.
In "The Cask of Amontillado," the setting creates a different effect. In "The Yellow Wallpaper," the setting helps create the story, and sets the actions of
the plot. In Poe's story he uses the setting different then Gilman. He uses the setting to create suspense and to give the reader a sense of how the
characters are felling walking through the catacombs looking for the wine. The dark, damp basement magnifies the tension and uncertainty of the
actions in the story. While the two stories are very different, the settings play a major role in both stories, without the setting, both stories would have

What Is The Mood In The Fall Of The House Of Usher
The Fall of the House of Usher, written by Edgar Allen Poe, is a classic example of a gothic horror story with physical and psychological elements
that create intense emotions of fear, gloom, and horror. Poe is the originator of the classic horror story "Poet–Edgar Allen Poe." (Poets 2017). His
writing style successfully produces these intense emotions he wants from the reader. Poe often uses the concept of doubles, irony, and a disease or
illness, to elicit emotions from the reader (Poe's, 2017). The Fall of the House of Usher has all the features of a classic horror story, including a haunted
house, gloomy landscape, a mysterious illness and double personalities, that captures the emotions and stirs up fear and anxiety in the reader.
Right from the start of the story, the setting evokes intense feelings for the narrator and the reader. The narrator genuinely feels nervous when he
approaches the house of Usher. Just at the first glimpse of the building, he senses an "insufferable gloom" (Usher, 322). He is puzzled that simple,
natural objects have the power to affect him. He looks at the house and landscape and sees bleak walls with vacant eyelike windows, decayed trees,

that occur up to the unexpected ending. Poe's use of dark, gloomy and disturbing words, along with sudden unexpected twists and turns in the plot,
intensifies the emotions of fear, doom, and horror experienced by the reader. Poe's use of the concept of doubles, irony, and a mysterious illness in this
story is evident when he describes the twins, the physical and psychological illnesses they have, and the demise of the siblings and the house. In the
end, Poe succeeds in capturing the reader's emotions as he tells the story through the narrator's

The Masque Of The Red Death Short Story Essay
EL101
"Short stories value symbol over plot." Discuss, with reference to both "The Masque of the Red Death" AND "The Tell–Tale Heart." By Edgar Allen
Poe.
Symbolism is a technique that is greatly valued in many short stories. It is evident in the work of Edgar Allen Poe, in his short stories, "The Masque
of the Red Death" and "The Tell–Tale Heart". Both of these short stories reveal and prove that short stories value symbol over plot. Poe's effective use
of symbolism in his short stories broadened my understanding of the story being told.
In the short story "The Masque of the Red Death", Poes use of symbolism is central to the story. There are many times throughout the short story where
the use of symbolism takes over the telling of the story. The first use of symbolism that struck me the most was the reference to the 'Seven Rooms',
seven chambers, all different in colour. Each room represented the different stages in our lives. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The colour red may symbolize love and passion but in this case, red symbolizes blood, pain and death caused by the plague that has caused instant
death to those who contract it.
These three main symbols in "The Masque of the Red Death" contribute to our interest and understanding in the story. In particular, it allows us to
believe that short stories really do value symbol over plot.
In "The Tell–Tale Heart", there are many examples of symbolism that support our beliefs that symbol is valued more than plot in short stories. The
symbolic meaning of the old mans eye is the main symbol in the short story, in my opinion. The old mans eye is "a vulture...a pale blue eye, with
film over it". This description is "indicating that there is a lack of visual clarity". The eye, in a way, could symbolize the lack of clarity and sanity we
see from the narrator due to the fact that he is telling his story through a distorted and mad mind, "mad men know nothing"

Similarities Between Edgar Allan Poe And Ralph Waldo Emerson
Edgar Allen Poe (Poe) and Ralph Waldo Emerson (Emerson) are both famed romantic writers and poets from early to mid–nineteenth century. Their
works are still some of the most studied and referenced in the present day. Both authors are famed for their writing and ideas, but their fame gained
success each in their unique way. The two men had starkly different writing styles, and their views on philosophy were just as different. Both
differences are evident when reading the two authors works. Emerson has an approach that based its roots in nature. He observes people and nature
coinciding as one and brings out the beauty not just of nature but of life that others may not observe as part of their everyday life. Emerson has a
passion for using his writing to better peoples' outlook and opinion on life through his philosophical ideas. Poes approach to romantic writing is
self–centered, and the way he portrays romanticism is in some cases dark. Rather than help the reader and their feelings; Poe writes about his
experiences and his feelings through different avenues of writing. Both authors have a common theme in their writing. They both show an importance
of self–awareness. Emerson's philosophical thinking reflects a Utilitarian approach to self–awareness in his writing called essays and Lectures. He
writes "Who in the midst of a crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude" (Emerson, 263). The crowd in this quote is
representative of all that is around us.

What Makes Poe Unique

  • 1. What Makes Poe Unique Edgar Allen Poe has many unique writing styles that occur often in his stories and poems. His unfortunate childhood led him to write many dark and creepy stories. These stories often were full of mystery and horror, and Poe was called the father of mystery literature. Poe also often wrote stories and poems related to his own life such as "Annabel Lee". What really made poe's writing unique, is how skillfully he used dramatic irony, characterization, and the detailedness of his stories. Poe's characters display many similar characteristics. In many of his stories, such as "The Tell Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" the main character is trying to prove there sanity. In "The Black Cat" Poe writes, "Yet mad am I not– and very surely i do not dream." Many people thought poe was crazy, and poe had to prove his sanity in his own life, which surely influenced his writing. Many of poe's characters are very mysterious. You almost never learn their name or anything about them which adds to the "Mysteriousness" of the text. In some stories such as "The Cask of Amontillado" you learn the narrators name by another man saying, "For the love of God, Montresor!" and not from the narrator telling the reader. Poe uses dramatic irony to feel sympathy for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The amount of detail he uses lets the reader see the story through poes eyes. Poe's "The Masque of Red Death" Displays so much detail, that you know the colors of the rooms, the furniture and the rooms, and even the way the light goes through the stain glass windows. In "The Fall of the House of Usher" Poe displays so much detail, that you know how the bricks are beginning to erode away, but the house is still structurally intact, and also how there is a large crack going down the center of the house. He uses the detail to see his point of view, and to share the same opinions on the event happening in the story. You can really understand poe in his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How Does The Bird Symbolize In The Raven The Bird That Made A Man Curious Once upon a midnight, there was a high schooler who read a deep story. That's me, the author Edgar Allan Poe wrote a gothic literature called "The Raven". To explain The Raven, the narrator is having a bad case of sorrow and a sort of depression caused by the lost of Lenore. She died and now he has no one, his friends and everyone has left him. Sitting in his home one night he heard someone or something knocking. Soon after a few trials of trying to find where this knocking is coming from, opens the window and in flies a raven that perches above his dooron the so called Pallas. The Raven says nothing but the word nevermore as the narrator asks why the bird came to him.As the Raven stays longer in the home the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In turn, the Raven, even through his limited vocabulary, forces the narrator to face the reality that Lenore will return 'nevermore,' a fact that the narrator does not want to acknowledge"("Edgar Allan Poe..."). Expounding on this source I believe this to be the same as my viewpoint on what this Raven is really symbolizing. The fact that the narrator doesn't want to realize that his loved one is gone and this Raven is trying to get him to understand that with his limited vocabulary just shows that the Raven is just a never–ending reminder that she, Lenore is gone along with the rest of his friends. Also I found in another source that the Raven has other symbols that are the opposite of the usual ones in that it states, " The bird's darkness symbolizes death; hence, death becomes a constant reminder, an imperious intruder. If taken in a broader context, the poem may be about the inability of man to escape his ultimate fate"("Meaning of "The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Insanity In Edgar Allen Poe's The Cask Of Amontillado You're having a serene conversation with one of your so called "friends" when you spontaneously insult them as a joke, but you don't realize that you infuriate your friend in the process and cause them to vow revenge on you with the only justice being death because they were mentally unstable. This is exactly what happened in Edgar Allen Poes' short story called "The cask of Amontillado," it is a story about Two men, Montresor and Fortunado, Montresor is a man who vows to get retribution on Fortunado, a man who merely Insulted his family name. As you can see Montresor is clearly insane and two other traits you could describe him with would be him being astute and extremely determined. In conclusion, there are three main traits that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I also witnessed more of his extreme determination when he sent all of the attendants away so he could have the palazzo to himself by using reverse psychology. Overall, we can tell that Montresor is very regulated to a certain objective or vow and is ruthless until he feels accomplished and satisfied. Montresor shows that he is a very astute and intelligent person throughout The Cask of Amontillado by using people so no one would discover his stealthy plan. An astute action that Montresor does is when he uses reverse psychology to get the attendants out of the Palazzo I know he knows that he is doing this on purpose because he says, "I had told them that I should not return until the morning, and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned." Another intelligent thing he does to insure that his plan succeeds is when he keeps bringing up Luchesi when talking to Fortunado, he does this to make Fortunado stubborn and insist on following him into the catacombs. Therefore, we now know that Montresor was extremely clever and could easily play people to his advantage which made him even more dangerous since he's a ruthless lunatic. In Summary, this ... Edgar Allan Poe Accomplishments Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, artist, pundit and editorial manager best known for reminiscent short stories and lyrics that caught the creative energy and enthusiasm of peruses around the world. His inventive narrating and stories of puzzle and frightfulness brought forth the cutting edge criminologist story. A considerable lot of Poe's works, including "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Fall of the House of Usher," wound up abstract works of art. A few parts of Poe's life, similar to his writing, is covered in puzzle, and the lines amongst actuality and fiction have been obscured considerably since his passing. This verse lyric again investigates Edgar Allen Poe's topics of death and misfortune and may have been composed in memory of his cherished spouse Virginia, who kicked the bucket two years earlier. The lyric was distributed on October 9, 1849, two days after Poe's demise, in the New York Tribune. From 1831 to 1835, Edgar Allan Poe lived in Baltimore, where his dad was conceived, with his close relative Maria Clemm and her girl, his cousin Virginia. He started to commit his consideration regarding Virginia, who turned into his artistic motivation and in addition his affection intrigue. • 6. Words to Describe Edgar Allen Poe Essay Words to Describe Edgar Allen Poe "Hoaxter, liar, impostor, and plagiarizer" (45) are words Kaplan used to describe Edgar Allan Poe. Poe as he claimed to be, was the best when it came to deception and perversion. In living his life and even in his manner of negotiating death, Poe was a captive of the imp of perversity. But with art as his shield, the realms of perversity became a haven for his troubled soul. . . Perversion is a complex strategy of mind, with its unique principles for regulating the negotiations between desire and authority. To achieve its aims, the perverse strategy employs mechanisms of mystification, concealment and illusion, devices characteristic of the tales of Edgar Allen Poe. The perverse strategy is, as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In some ways, "The Raven" shows Poe at his greatest image–making power, in which part of his life serves as a blueprint. His perfect illustration of the prison–like environment, on top of the inner turmoil of the narrator, creates a detailed, terrifying picture for the reader. At first glance, it is easy to see that Poe wrote this poem in reference to someone he truly loved. The problem is to know exactly who that person, Lenore, is, because without having that information, it would be impossible to understand the four points Poe is trying to make. By looking at the obvious, anybody can decide that Lenore was no longer part of the real–human–world. And if we accept that fact, we could rule out Virginia Poe, Edgar's wife, and Elmira Royster, to whom Poe was engaged in 1826, because they were both alive when "The Raven" was being composed in 1844. Since that leaves us with Poe's mother and foster mother whom he dearly loved, it would seem appropriate to say that Lenore was a nickname Edgar used to represent one of his dead mothers. But there are more problems to this equation. First of all, Poe's real mother died when he was only two years old and for him to feel that much pain because of her death seems ridiculous. Second, his foster mother died in 1829; why would he wait fifteen years to express his feelings? And third, in a poem titled "Lenore," which Edgar wrote around the same time as "The Raven," he made it clear that Lenore was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Biography of Edgar Allan Poe "There are two bodies – the rudimental and the complete; corresponding with the two conditions of the worm and the butterfly. First I will inform you of his birth along with his parents, then I will tell you about his childhood and education, after that I will follow up on his mysterious death. Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in a cheap rooming house near the Boston Common. Point, Poe wrote and published several short stories anonymously, along with books full of poems Since we have talked about his childhood along with his adulthood, let's move onto to his later years and his death Edgar Allan Poe passed away on October 7, 1849 at the age of 40 in Baltimore, Maryland. Walsh, the author of The Mysterious Death Of Edgar Allan Poe, said that "The Immediate Cause of death given was "congestion of the brain," or "inflammation of the brain," catch–all medical phrases of the day." In his own time and even decades later, no one really questioned the verdict that the culprit was liquor. No one seriously questioned that Poe died as a result of complications arising from a drunken debauch (de batch). Drunkenness explained all, it was decided; otherwise, if Poe had been found in extreme distress in a public place, that standard procedure would have been followed, and much more would now be known. What was assumed was some sort of physiological or orthostatic collapse. Science in that day was unable to define it further. There is a lot of theories on how he died: A fatal heart condition of long standing was postulated, as was epilepsy, as well as a diabetic coma complicated by liver damage, hypoglycemia, and ... • 8. The Cask Of Amontillado Compare And Contrast The short story "The Cask of Amontillado" can be interpreted in about one thousand different ways. My initial impact on the story is far – far different from what I think the story is really about after thinking about it for a day or two. But, I think they are both equally feasible. So I will tell you about both of them in the paragraphs below. "The Cask of Amontillado" is a strange, at first puzzling, very Edger Allen Poe–esque tale about a clearly mentally unstable narrator named Montresor who lures an intoxicated former friend, named Fortunato, into a system of tunnels and traps him at the end by chaining him to a wall and constructing a wall of his own to make sure he stays there to die. • 9. The Cask Of Amontillado Symbolism Essay In The Cask Of Amontillado, author Edgar Allen Poes use of the words "I" and "Fortunado" are to be read symbolically. The "I" character, who doubles the part as the narrator, takes on a persona of psychotic, revenge filled thoughts. Poe most likely used these two specific names to represent the characters because without them, the story would be read quickly without any thought as to whom these actual characters speak for. When a tale commonly has designated character names, plot line, climax and resolution, it is more often than not a story you aren't likely to remember. Poe used noteworthy names throughout the drama to make the reader really think about who "I" and "Fortundo" represents in the eyes of a community. Throughout the story,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Cask Of Amontillado , Fortunado is conned. The narrator acts kindly, nonchalantly and overall friendly towards him. The narrator finds a way to gain Fortunados trust in him. Understandably, he was beyond drunk upon arriving at the catacombs, but I solely believe that even impaired judgment could see that this idea was catastrophic. Even the sound of a name like "Fortunado" inclines the reader to think that this man is either royalty or of a wealthy status. Fortundos name within itself represents the entire upper society. The affluent people in this social class have a reputation of being naive, un–responsible, and merciless to the rest of society. • 11. The Fall of the House of Usher: Imagery and Parallelism The Fall of the House of Usher: Imagery and Parallelism In his short story "The Fall of the House of Usher", Edgar Allen Poe presents his reader with an intricately suspenseful plot filled with a foreboding sense of destruction. Poe uses several literary devices, among the most prevalent, however are his morbid imagery and eerie parallelism. Hidden in the malady of the main character are several different themes, which are all slightly connected yet inherently different. Poe begins the story by placing the narrator in front of the decrepit, decaying mansion of Roderick Usher. Usher summoned his childhood friend, the narrator, to his home by sending a letter detailing only a minor illness. After the narrator arrives and sees... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These stories , in their own way are somehow parallel to the story in "The Fall of the House of Usher". The painting was a painting done by Henry Fuesli. "Fuesli was noted for his interest in the supernatural."(Poe, 127). "A small picture presented the interior of an immensely long and rectangular vault or tunnel, with low walls, smooth, white, and without interruption...and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendor." (Poe, 127). This description can be interpreted as a place of sorrow, where the atmosphere is morbid and cold. Most people have art in their homes for reasons of cheering up the place. All this painting did was add morbidity and coldness to the house. The poem entitled "The Haunted Palace" makes a connection between the house and its inhabitants. The poem seems to parallel to the plot of "The Fall of the House of Usher". "Once a fair and stately palace––snow white palace––reared its head"(Poe, 127). This describes the past of the Usher home. It was once a stately mansion, but as time went by the house deteriorated along with the conditions of the people occupying it. We get to the present in both the story and this excerpt "but evil things in rokes of sorrow, assailed the monarchs high estate"(Poe, 126). This is what is happening to the Usher house now. The house along with its inhabitants are full of sorrow. Poe uses differing themes of fear, death, and freedom throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Symbolism In The Conqueror Worm The Conqueror Worm by Edgar Allan Poe is a poem embedded with deep symbolism. Death is a common thing among Edgar Allen Poe's poems and the conqueror worm is definitely not an exception. The very theme in the story is that we are like puppets in the play of life, putting on a show for a higher deity. Edgar Allan Poe did a good job weaving the theme in with tons of symbolism, however the idea that death conquers all is easily found if you look close enough. First indication of the theme is in line 12 where it clearly states that "Mere Puppets they who come and go at the bidding of vast formless things." that portion from the first stanza shows the Poe viewed people as puppets, and that humanity or "the puppets" come and go at the will of something ... Edgar Allen Poe also shows that in his books also." Miles glanced then quickly asked," Is The Cask of Amontillado use of irony also have humor?" Another person's whose name misinterprets his given life is Montresor, the narrator. Poes creativity and use of his misleading is rarely used in modern day novels or movies. His main character Montresor, the protagonist, is revealed at the end that he is the villain throughout the whole story, not Fortunato. Montresor is also known as a friendly, well–known man from the way the characters stated their friendship scale with him. The characters names in Poe's story is the over accomplishment of irony. Edgar Allen Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" is an iconic piece of gothic literature with a dark theme. He uses normal objects in his story such as rooms and hallways and gives them a deeper meaning to connect to the moral of the story. Poe's short story is heavy with symbols which lead to the ultimate theme of his piece that there is no way to escape the inevitable no matter what your social standing may be. Poe showcases this thought through his many forms of symbolism to support this theme. This short story talks of a deadly plague and how nobody, not even the elite can escape it. It helps them to believe that they are safe from the red death. Although the celebration is put to an end by a mysterious guest who makes an appearance at the ball. This guest disrupts the celebration and offends the prince with his appearance. His appearance is described as "The figure was tall and gaunt, and shrouded from head to foot in the habiliments of the grave." Tags Literature Edgar Allan Poe's life experiences had a adult impact on the topics and themes of his writing. One of the most common themes in Edgar Allen Poe's poems and clerestory relating to death are "The Black Cat," "The Masque of the Red Death," " Cast of Amontillado," "Annabel Lee" and " The Raven". " 'Prophet!' aforesaid I, 'thing of evil–prophet still, if bird or devil!–'" This in my opinion relates to how he did not know many stuff. The Use Of Symbolism In Edgar Allen Poe By Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allen Poe, an American writer, was known as a poet and critic but was most famous as a master of short stories, particularly tales of the mysterious and the macabre. Some would claim may claim that Poe was the greatest author, or that Poe's use of symbolism is the best while others would contend that he is overrated. However despite such controversy his works have continued to be popular and many American and European writers have declared that his use of symbolism, imagery and foreshadowing surpass all others. • 17. Romanticism In The Great Gatsby F. Scott FitzgeraldF. Scott Fitzgerald is in many ways one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century. In his first novel, This Side of Paradise, Fitzgerald epitomized the mindset of an era with the statement that his generation had, grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, and all faiths in man shaken(Fitzgerald 307). Aside from being a major literary voice of the twenties and thirties, Fitzgerald was also among The Lost Generations harshest and most insightful social critics. In his classic novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald blatantly criticized the immorality, materialism, and hedonism which characterized the lifestyles of Americas bourgeois during the nineteen–twenties. Collectively, Fitzgeralds novels and short stories provide some of the best insight into the lifestyles of the rich during Americas most prosperous era, while simultaneously examining major literary themes such as disillusionment, coming of age, and the corruption of the American Dream. The life ofF. Scott Fitzgerald is marked by as much, if not more, romanticism and tragedy than his novels. Throughout Fitzgeralds life, he unsuccessfully battled alcoholism, depression, and himself, in a quest for both personal and literary identity. At the age of twenty–three, Fitzgerald published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, to critical raves and unimaginable economic success. Who Is The Unnamed Narrator In The Raven The Analyzation and Depiction of Poe's Poems (Thesis) If we would analyze characters from Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" and "The Tell–Tale Heart" what importance did they have in the poems and why would Poe depict these characters this way? In the two poems, they have an ongoing theme of death but depicted in a different way. The unnamed narrator in "The Raven" seems to be grieving for his deceased love Lenore, based on my opinion the unnamed narrator could be depicted this way because around the time this poem was published Poe's wife Virginia was dying of tuberculosis. While in "The Tell–Tale Heart" another unnamed narrator seemed like he enjoyed murdering the old man, so in my thoughts, I believe Poe depicted the narrator in this way because ... The narrator in the story tells us that he has no hatred towards the old man even going on to mention that he loves the old man and that he wasn't interested in his gold, but his motive to execute the old man was because of his eye as I quote he said "He had the eye of a vulture ––a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees ––very gradually ––I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.[7–8]". Speculating that the narrator could be Poe but, as a persona. The old man the only major impact to the story from my perspective that I could tell was his eye, because that's the only motive why the narrator chose to kill the old man. But the old man could have a more bigger perspective in Poes mind. The old man could be a perspective of what Poe wanted to do to his adopted father John Allan. Poe's stepfather didn't want anything to do with Poe and sent him away when he was given the opportunity to do so. At the end theonly thing that she has to be satisfied about is that her murdering four young men can make other women feel how she felt when she found out about the death of her son. This is the author's first attempt at making the audience have sympathy for the woman. In our modern day society, we would think that this woman is abandoned and maybe might need some kind of physiological attention. This is a contrast to Poe who wanted people to get the impression that the speaker in his story was a mad man. They both seem to want you to have a kind heart when thinking about the two, however, Poes' character dismisses his credibility when he starts to talk about his reasoning behind his killing. The story goes on to say that the woman was forced to care for four young men who were enemies that took over the city. But the woman does not seem to mind because they treat her with a great deal of respect and they also provide her with companionship. One day she receives a letter telling her that her son was killed: "She did not cry. She stood motionless, stricken, dazed so that she could feel no more" (Du Maupassant, 3). One can argue that this is the point were the woman's' feelings leave and the only thing in her heart is revenge. This is the turning point in the story and at this point the reader is worried about what the woman will now do. Poe, forms the explicit main idea that violence is used to gain insight and personal amelioration. Additionally, using a character's journey for self knowledge Poe implies that the actions a person take may be responsible for psychological instability. Foster explains the reasoning behind violence in literature by stating, happens for a specific reason and often times stands for a symbol or metaphor (95). The violence in "To Tell–Tale Heart" can stand as a symbol of satisfaction. Using violence, it allows a person to gain power and superiority over themselves and others. Although committing the murder didn't result in the solution, the narrator was hoping for, it did allow him to gain insight on the situation. First, his name resembles the word "fortune" and to have good fortune can mean to have good luck, which is obviously not what Fortunate has, having been left for eternity to perish alone in darkness. Another source of irony is found in almost everything that Montresor says. Every time he speaks to Fortunato, he speaks to him as if he is his friend. He speaks to him with a sarcasm that is not noticeable. However, since we are inside his head, we know that Montresor is not actually friends with Fortunato and this ploy is all actually part of his plot to kill Fortunato. "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is told in the first person point of view, presumably Poe's view, acting as a narrator. This point of view provides for a more intimate relation of the sordid tale, stating, " I often dwelt meditatively upon the old philosophy of the Bi–Part Soul, and amused myself with the fancy of a double Dupin–the creative and the resolvent. (p. 4)" Without this personal point of view, the reader would be oblivious to Dupin's separate personalities. This quote can show how he states you can never forgot a loved one because he is reminded of her by just the moonlight alone showing that other things remind him of her telling us that he will never forgot about her. This can also be an example for the general audience of this poem because it can tell the audience how hard it is to forgot about a loved one because you are reminded of them daily by the smallest things. Another example of Edgar Allen Poe showing us that you can never forget a loved one is this quote ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Yellow Wallpaper and The Cask Of Amontillado The Yellow Wallpaper and The Cask Of Amontillado The short story, " The Yellow Wallpaper", written by Charlotte Gilman, and "The Cask of Amontillado" written by Edgar Allan Poe, are stories in which the plots are very different, but share similar qualities with the elements in the story. "The Cask of Amontillado" is a powerful tale of revenge, in which the narrator of the tale pledges revenge upon Fortunato for an insult. "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a story about a woman, her psychological difficulties and her husband's therapeutic treatment of her illness. She struggles over her illness, and battle's her controlling husband. The settings in both stories are very important, they influence the characters, and help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Irony occurs when the reader becomes painfully aware of what will become of Fortunato, even though he continues his descent into the catacombs in pursuit of the wine. Poe also adds to this effect, by calling the man Fortunato, who is anything but fortunate, and has him dressed in a clown's costume, which portrays him as a fool. While the settings in the two stories are very different, the different settings create the elements to the stories. The narrator in "The Yellow Wallpaper" becomes haunted by the wallpaper in her room. The setting takes place in the room, she dislikes the room from the moment she sees it and fells suffocated by it. Her feeling of suffocation and being haunted by the wallpaper helps the reader become more aware of her motivation for tearing the wallpaper down. In "The Cask of Amontillado," the setting creates a different effect. In "The Yellow Wallpaper," the setting helps create the story, and sets the actions of the plot. In Poe's story he uses the setting different then Gilman. He uses the setting to create suspense and to give the reader a sense of how the characters are felling walking through the catacombs looking for the wine. The dark, damp basement magnifies the tension and uncertainty of the actions in the story. While the two stories are very different, the settings play a major role in both stories, without the setting, both stories would have less style and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. What Is The Mood In The Fall Of The House Of Usher The Fall of the House of Usher, written by Edgar Allen Poe, is a classic example of a gothic horror story with physical and psychological elements that create intense emotions of fear, gloom, and horror. Poe is the originator of the classic horror story "Poet–Edgar Allen Poe." (Poets 2017). His writing style successfully produces these intense emotions he wants from the reader. Poe often uses the concept of doubles, irony, and a disease or illness, to elicit emotions from the reader (Poe's, 2017). The Fall of the House of Usher has all the features of a classic horror story, including a haunted house, gloomy landscape, a mysterious illness and double personalities, that captures the emotions and stirs up fear and anxiety in the reader. Right from the start of the story, the setting evokes intense feelings for the narrator and the reader. The narrator genuinely feels nervous when he approaches the house of Usher. Just at the first glimpse of the building, he senses an "insufferable gloom" (Usher, 322). He is puzzled that simple, natural objects have the power to affect him. He looks at the house and landscape and sees bleak walls with vacant eyelike windows, decayed trees, and "a black and lurid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Poe's use of dark, gloomy and disturbing words, along with sudden unexpected twists and turns in the plot, intensifies the emotions of fear, doom, and horror experienced by the reader. Poe's use of the concept of doubles, irony, and a mysterious illness in this story is evident when he describes the twins, the physical and psychological illnesses they have, and the demise of the siblings and the house. • 37. The Masque Of The Red Death Short Story Essay EL101 "Short stories value symbol over plot." Discuss, with reference to both "The Masque of the Red Death" AND "The Tell–Tale Heart." By Edgar Allen Poe. Symbolism is a technique that is greatly valued in many short stories. It is evident in the work of Edgar Allen Poe, in his short stories, "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Tell–Tale Heart". Both of these short stories reveal and prove that short stories value symbol over plot. Poe's effective use of symbolism in his short stories broadened my understanding of the story being told. In the short story "The Masque of the Red Death", Poes use of symbolism is central to the story. There are many times throughout the short story where the use of symbolism takes over the telling of the story. The first use of symbolism that struck me the most was the reference to the 'Seven Rooms', seven chambers, all different in colour. Each room represented the different stages in our lives. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The colour red may symbolize love and passion but in this case, red symbolizes blood, pain and death caused by the plague that has caused instant death to those who contract it. These three main symbols in "The Masque of the Red Death" contribute to our interest and understanding in the story. In particular, it allows us to believe that short stories really do value symbol over plot. In "The Tell–Tale Heart", there are many examples of symbolism that support our beliefs that symbol is valued more than plot in short stories. The symbolic meaning of the old mans eye is the main symbol in the short story, in my opinion. The old mans eye is "a vulture...a pale blue eye, with film over it". This description is "indicating that there is a lack of visual clarity". The eye, in a way, could symbolize the lack of clarity and sanity we see from the narrator due to the fact that he is telling his story through a distorted and mad mind, "mad men know nothing" ... • 38. Similarities Between Edgar Allan Poe And Ralph Waldo Emerson Edgar Allen Poe (Poe) and Ralph Waldo Emerson (Emerson) are both famed romantic writers and poets from early to mid–nineteenth century. Their works are still some of the most studied and referenced in the present day. Both authors are famed for their writing and ideas, but their fame gained success each in their unique way. The two men had starkly different writing styles, and their views on philosophy were just as different. Both differences are evident when reading the two authors works. Emerson has an approach that based its roots in nature. He observes people and nature coinciding as one and brings out the beauty not just of nature but of life that others may not observe as part of their everyday life. Emerson has a passion for using his writing to better peoples' outlook and opinion on life through his philosophical ideas. Poes approach to romantic writing is self–centered, and the way he portrays romanticism is in some cases dark. Rather than help the reader and their feelings; Poe writes about his experiences and his feelings through different avenues of writing. Both authors have a common theme in their writing. They both show an importance of self–awareness. Emerson's philosophical thinking reflects a Utilitarian approach to self–awareness in his writing called essays and Lectures. He writes "Who in the midst of a crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude" (Emerson, 263). The crowd in this quote is representative of all that is around us. ...
