Music And Teen Identity
Over the thousands of years that people have been making and listening to music, it has evolved
greatly. In today's time, most people listen to music on a daily basis. Everyone regardless of age, has
their own type of music that they prefer to listen to. In an article about the psychological effects of
music the author states: "Teens listen to the most music out of every age group" (Tarrant, 2000). It's
important to look at the different messages and themes that are shown in the different popular types
of music that teens are listening to, and to see if it has an impact on identity formation. Most of the
research I took a look at dating nearly 20 years, suggest that popular types of music that adolescents

listen to include lyrics that feature explicit words, and promote risk taking behavior. These popular

My Views On Love Country Music
Often times I wonder what my thoughts look like scattered out on a sheet of paper. Do I ramble on?
Am I in control? Does it depend on the topic? Personally I think it mostly depends on the topic,
because I honestly do not care about some of the topics that are driven into my head by family,
friends, or school. When given the choice of topic I could often ramble for hours and therefore my
pen cannot keep pace with the rambling session that is taking place in my head. I began with my
broad topic; simply stating that I love country music. It made sense to use this topic. I could listen to
this music all day, everyday and still be standing upright. If you talk to most people in this school
they would rather drop dead or beat their head of a wall than have to listen to country for more than
ten minutes. I then mentioned, how I am not always proud of the fact that I listen to this kind of

One cannot speak about music especially in America with referencing Jazz or the Blues. The two
genres of music are synonymous with the American music scene originating from Southern
America. Their similar point of origin has caused much confusion in distinguishing the two mainly

The musical genre, reggae, was originally coined in the 1960s. Derived from rege–rege – Jamaican
for "rags or ragged clothing" – the genre was used to describe the raggedy music style found in
Jamaica at the time. Reggae incorporates the traditional Jamaican music such as mento and ska,
rhythm & blues, and rocksteady. Ska characteristics such as the walking bass line of the guitar and
piano off–beats are used in reggae. However, ska is much faster than reggae, so the use of
rocksteady in the genre slows the ska tempo. Reggae songs are heavily backbeated, meaning the
music has highly emphasized second and fourth beats; this style is typically found in African–based
musical genres. In reggae's foundation, artists typically wrote of love, but the seventies foresaw the

The first point is definitely true, as mentioned above, I will listen to different music depending on
my mood based on how it makes me feel. I believe this to be true for most people that we will all

Throughout my life I've had many experiences that shape the way I am today. Everything I've
experienced and the people I grew up around and called my friends have influenced me in many
ways. For example, what sports I liked, the music I listened to, what movies and shows I liked and
basically everything else that made me the person I am today. Even before I was born twenty–five
years before my birth my parents were young children growing up in poverty in Jalisco, Mexico.
My father was ten years old and my mother was seven years old. With little to no money my parents

early recordings of Rock 'n' Roll artist Elvis Presley, Shaw notes that, before gaining fame, Presley's
five Sun disks had included songs originally written and recorded by a black Rhythm & Blues artist
(1980. P.71). Shaw argues that while "rock 'n' roll is a white derivative of R & B" the two can easily
be distinguished, presenting a number of distinctions, R & B comprises the 1940s and early '50s era,
while rock 'n' roll surfaces in the mid 1950s (1980, p.74). Other distinctions include sociological
aspects, such as R & B being the "product of the black experience in a segregated world...forcing

A music genre is a category of pieces of music that share a certain style or "basic musical language"
(van der Merwe 1989, p.3). The two articles that I will be comparing are "Genres, Subgenres, Sub–
Subgenres and More" by Kembrew McLeod (2001) and "On the Value of Popular Music" by S.
Firth (1996). Categorizing music is especially challenging when it comes to fitting it into sub
genres. As we move through the ages, and technology and communication becomes more complex,

adamant claim that introduction of new subgenre names into electronic/dance music communities is
equalled by no other type of music thus that genre has been the biggest growing. Like Firth (1996),
McLeod projects the idea of gender in music implying women as the minority relative to genre.
