University Of Kentucky Basketball Team Case Study
In management class, students have been given the option to write about a team they think has been rather successful in their opinion. The 2013–2014
University of Kentucky basketball team is one such team. The University of Kentucky basketball program is a historically successful program with a
rich tradition. This program has been followed by many fans, myself included. To achieve success in athletics often requires making the most of one's
strengths, minimizing weaknesses, and preparing thoroughly for the competition.
Before the season even started, Kentucky was ranked as the number one team in the nation. Coach John Calapari recruited debatably the greatest
recruiting class of all time bringing in eight of the nation's top 100 players. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The players participate in practice daily among and against some of the best players in the country. The team consistently plays a difficult South
Eastern Conference (SEC) and out of conference schedule. The basketball program receives a lot of national broadcast television time and the lodging
and athletic facilities are among the best in the country. Calapari's NBA connections are very attractive to the elitehigh school and college players that
have the ability to play professionally. Not to mention, Calapari is one of the best coaches in the country, so he is a good teacher. The university is
large, has over 100 degree options to choose from, and is centrally located in Lexington, Kentucky making it convenient for students to get around
town. The players live in and practice in new or state of the art facilities. These are the opportunities the University of Kentucky utilizes to its
competitive advantage to encourage recruits to seriously consider their basketball

Essay about Coming to America
Life is about making choices, but some of them can even change our life. Two years ago I decided to come to America for my higher studies in
Western Kentucky University. Although I knew it was really a challenge to me, this significant decision that I've made was going to change
everything about my life and me. There are many things in life that can change the course of a person's life. It can either make a positive impact or a
negative impact on a person's life. It's always best to have the positive impact though. For me I have had a positive experience that has changed my life
forever and that is coming to a different land and culture.
There are a lot of surprising and sometimes difficult things that impresses when you arrived in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Arriving in a new country was exciting and discomforting. America is a wonderful place to live, which is full of adventure and challenges. I was
attracted by the Western culture. Meanwhile, different languages also troubled me. Although I began to learn English in elementary school from ABC,
my listening and oral abilities tend not to be adequate. I have to study hard to improve my English, so that I can understand what the people said.
Since I came to America, I made great progress not only with foreign languages but also with my adaptive capabilities. From what I saw, read, and
talked with my friends, I realized that I am improving more and more. In the past two years, I learned a lot more here. This experience not only
broadens my view but also enriches my life. It changed my life for the good.
I am a changed and a better person, I have direction for my life, and I have an amazing friend circle. I have acquired the new way the thing's are done
around here and go with the flow, while maintaining my old values and customs. According to me people come to the States to pursue many interests.
But in my opinion, coming to this country as a student is the best way to feel its pulse.
Until now my experiences in this country had been very special to me. For the first time, I had to be away from my family. I was forced to make
every decision without being reliant on the wisdom of elders. For the first time, I saw and spoke to

Transition In College
When starting college the transition can be very hectic, it can cause much stress to some and to others it can be a very smooth transition as if nothing
has changed. This has a big thing to do with the social norms, culture, geographics, socialization, and assimilation. Many students travel across the
world to go to college in various different places to explore different places that have different cultures in which they are not used to. This can be a
very hard thing to do but many students do it without a second thought in their mind about what it could mean for the change in social norms that they
will have to adapt to once they move to the other places. They also do not think about how different it will be as far as culture goes when going... Show

Most of this socialization will come from communicating with new people on campus and interacting with peers that you have classes with or
maybe even pass on a daily basis. An example of socialization that many people like myself for instance would be the professors giving out
syllabus and having an set schedule for you to go by displaying everything for that course, or maybe the rules and regulations of school policy as to
where there were none back home where you came from. In which many students are not used to when coming from a place like high school or
maybe no school at all. In college you are independent and that is a big leap from high school where the teachers were more active in reminding
students about deadlines for assignments. Another great example of these different socialization norms would be like if someone was used to
calling people by there first name but once you reach college you are required to call professors by their professional title or else they will feel
offended. Students that need assistance form those professors now have to professionally address them to receive assistance or help regarding
late submissions for work. These are all examples of socialization for college students just starting college and it can become very overwhelming
and confusing. Especially if you are living on your own for the first time and you have never been on your own so far away from home. This is
especially tough if you are living on your own for the first time. You may have once had a curfew, and now you might be able to stay out as long as
you like. Your parents might have taken care of all sorts of things you now have to deal with, like paying bills, doing laundry and other basic cleaning.
Meal times might have been regular in your household; now you can eat at a variety of different times and you may

Graduation Speech At Western Kentucky University
When I was in high school, college was something I only dreamed would one day be an opportunity for me. Coming from a tough childhood with little
opportunity, college was one of many things that I felt was just out of my reach and unattainable. With hard work, perseverance, and dedication I made
my dream come true. One of the proudest accomplishments of my life was earning my Associates in Arts, and continuing on to my Bachelor ofSocial
Work. This experience has taught me to value my ability to work hard toward what I want to accomplish, dedicate myself to what I am passionate
about, and persevere even when things get especially hard. These factors make me a strong candidate for entering the Master of Social Work program

workers. My experiences have greatly contributed to my personal knowledge. While it does not define who I am, it has shaped the person I am today.
I will bring my passion for learning and knowledge to the classroom. Education is so important to me. I believe that I can contribute to classroom
diversity by sharing my personal experience, values, and my own point of view to help others consider other backgrounds and experiences. In
addition, I hope to do the same and learn from my classmates.

Why I Am A Psychologist, The State Of Kentucky One Must...
Licensure Paper I have wanted to be a psychologist most of my life. In order to become a licensed psychologist in the State of Kentucky one must
first obtain licensure. According to The Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology (2007) the Kentucky Revised Statutes, KRS 319.005 states that
no one by law is allowed to use the title of psychologist, practice as a psychologist, or in any way cause others to believe that they possess credentials
to do so, unless they have been licensed by the board.

apply for licensure. On October 8, 2012 she responded to me via email with the following information.
The Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology is frequently asked ... (about) requirements for licensure. 201 KAR 26:200 ... defines terms used by
the Board of Examiners of Psychologists for meeting educational requirements for licensure as a licensed psychologist.
Section 2 of this regulation states in part:
Section 2. (1) In determining the acceptability of curricular experiences and course work, the following factors shall be considered:
(a) The curriculum shall encompass a minimum of three (3) academic years of full–time graduate study.
(b) A minimum of one (1) full academic year shall be spent in residence at the institution.
The "minimum of one full academic year shall be spent in residence at the institution" requires the candidate to have spent one year minimum on a
physical campus, with physical classrooms, where students actually share the same space. (R. Vick, personal communication, October 8, 2012)

Abstract
There are many benefits for jail diversionary programs in the state of Kentucky. Nonviolent offenders, family members, judicial systems, and the jails
can benefit from keeping these people out of jail and in society.
I was surprised to find, during my research very few negatives to these programs around the country.

Kentucky History Summary
This introduction to Kentucky history is a collaboration between the state's leading historian, James C. Klotter, and educational consultant Freda C.
Klotter. In five compact chapters, they outline major influences and developments of the frontier, statehood, Civil War, industrial, and modern periods.
Seven other chapters are thematic, focusing on Kentucky government, regions and regionalism, agricultural and material culture, commercial
transformation, literature and music, and demography. Occasional sidebars document the lives of well–known and anonymous Kentuckians to
illustrate economic, social, and cultural themes. A Concise History of Kentucky will be useful to many readers new to the state. Concision has
advantages. A concise history... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, individual courage and achievement are emphasized as the dominant engines of progress. Of course, remarkable individuals do shape history,
but in this concise history heroic individuals seem to create collective reform and resistance rather than emerge from them. Eijah Marrs leads black
troops into battle for the Union and later speaks for black rights (121). But the populist black "Union Leagues" in which he participated after the war to
resist widespread white–on–black violence of Redemption–era Kentucky are missing. Coal miner Sam Hawkins struggles to provide for his family in
Depression–era Letcher County (133), but there is no reference to the formative class and unionization struggles in 1930s eastern Kentucky coalfields.
Muhammad Ali (178–79) refuses induction into the army, is vindicated by the Supreme Court, and regains his heavyweight title. But the context of the
anti–Vietnam war movement and black resistance is omitted; here, Ali's historical significance rests more on his reconciliation with his native
Louisville rather than his contributions to the black power movement. Commercially successful country or mountain singers merit praise (155–58), but
there is no mention of influential "message" singers such as Molly Jackson, Sarah Ogan Gunning, or Florence Reece. Wendell Berry, justifiably called
"the greatest living Kentucky writer," appears as a lone oracle imploring Kentuckians to protect their environment from industrial plunder (150). But
Berry's environmental advocacy is rooted in a broadly based grassroots citizens' movement that gets no

A Speech On Western Kentucky University
My fellow Colonels, I could start my address to you with a clichГ© statement about how today marks the first day of the rest of our lives. I could
say that today is where your book begins, and that the rest is still unwritten. I could say that my wish for you is that this life becomes all that you
want it to, or that you are the wind beneath my wings, or that baby, you're a firework! But I won't. I won't begin with a clichГ© statement because
EKU is not a school full of clichГ© students. Eastern Kentucky University has proven to be a school full of clever individuals. It is a school as

It is a term plastered across buildings and campus–wide emails. Diversity is a word a majority of students feel well and truly acquainted with, and for
good reason. The standard answer I have received when I ask students what diversity means to them relates to the coming together of different
cultures. The exercise of this understood definition is seen plainly on the campus of EKU. The encouragement of diversity has encouraged me to
experience other cultures in ways I would not have had opportunities to otherwise. The exposure to the word itself, however, has challenged me to
look beyond the common understanding of the word. As an English major (with a literature concentration!) I love words. I love to look up their
meanings and see how many different ways those meanings can be interpreted and applied to assorted situations. When I looked into the word
diversity, I found that, while most commonly applied to multiculturalism in various settings, it can be applied to countless other aspects of life as
well. Some of these areas, like diversity in foods, are also aspects of diversity in cultures. In a way, one can lead to the other. For example, I was
recently introduced to Indian food while I was overseas. In my opinion, it is the best food ever. My appreciation for this culture's food led to a desire to
learn more about other aspects of this culture. On the other hand, I am a proud Greek. Not of the sorority variety, though that did sound fun,

Personal Narrative: My Journey To Western Kentucky University
From this course I have learned how social psychology connects to everyday life. This piece will highlight how my experience in leaving Western
Kentucky University can be evaluated through the concepts of social psychology in order to better understand how my feelings, thoughts, and
behaviors were effects in this social situation (text, 5). In the beginning of my education battle, when it came time for me to go to college, my father
placed a huge responsibility on me to finish school because I would be the first child to go to college and complete it. Though I have always carried
a lot of accountability in myself in being a role model for my siblings, after graduation I had no time to think about myself in terms of what college
would mean for my future. This is because I didn't know actually what I wanted out of my experience at Western KentuckyUniversity; however,

The Effects Of Sexual Assault On College Campuses
Look around at four of your female friends; according to "Not Alone," a US Government report on sexual assault, by the time you graduate
college, one of you will become a victim of sexual assault. For years, schools have struggled with figuring out how to handle this epidemic. Many
schools just don't focus on sexual assault; for example, according to Rolling Stone's article, "Rolling Stone and UVA: The Columbia University
Graduate School of Journalism Report" by Sheila Coronel, Steve Coll, and Derek Kravitz, The University of Virginia has expelled 183 students for
academic dishonesty and 0 students for sexual assault. This shows how policymakers have pushed sexual assault to the side for decades on college
campuses, despite frequent protests and requests from students for colleges to make campuses safer. Sexual assaults on college campuses have been
mishandled throughout history, and colleges that have made policy changes have often made ineffective or misguided choices. Colleges need to
adopt a "yes means yes" policy for verbal consent and should model their policies after the University of Kentucky's successful "green dot" program.
Before discussing the sexual assault crisis on college campuses, it is important to disprove some misconceptions. When someone reports a sexual
assault, society tends to immediately deny the assault happened, claiming false accusation, but, according to Stanford's "Men Against Abuse Now"
report, only two percent of allegations are false, a

one of the largest decisions that people face. This big decision has been weighing heavily on me lately. There are many options when it comes to
choosing a college. Deciding whether or not to go out of state is also a huge decision that students make. The college decision can lead to many
opportunities later on in life. Although The University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University both appeal to me, I am leaning toward The Ohio

There are so many opportunities at the The University of Kentucky. UK is conveniently located in Lexington, Kentucky, and I happen to really
love the city. Although Kentucky isn't my first option at the moment, it does offer some amazing things. The dorm rooms at The University of
Kentucky are very new ("Room Types"). These newer rooms are very spacious and very modern. There are also many room types to choose from
at The University of Kentucky. This is a big pro if I were to go to Kentucky for college. On the other hand, Kentucky is very far from home. From
Lexington to my house it is about a three or four hour car ride ("Google Maps Kentucky"). This, in my opinion, is too long of a drive from home.
The distance, however, is not the only con to going to The University of Kentucky. Since my home is in Ohio, I would have to pay out of state
tuition at UK. College is expensive as it is and out of state tuition makes it almost impossible for me to go to the University of Kentucky. UK would
cost about $40,000 a year (Money). Although this price is expected to go down due to scholarships and grants, the price is still too high. Another
downfall to Kentucky is the medical school ranking. Kentucky medical school is ranked 64th ("University of Kentucky"). Although a rank of 64 is
not too bad, it is still considerably lower than Ohio State's medical school rank. I am looking for a large school. The University of Kentucky has

Are Athletic Departments At The University Of Kentucky?
When it comes to going to college, one would think that athletic departments at schools like University of Kentucky and University of North Carolina
would make the effort to put strong emphasis for their student–athletes to have a high academic standing in order to play. Sadly now a days, the case is
the opposite and they ultimately lose as students. Domonique Foxworth, who played college football at the University of Maryland from 2002 to 2004,
he sparks conversation with the statement that "When I played college football in the University of Maryland, we kind of had a motto, which is
that C's get degrees. That's what we do. Everyone pretends, but you know that your responsibility is to win football games." (Schooled: The Price of
College Sports). He also adds that "I knew it was more valuable to my school that I get a C on an exam. An interception on Saturday than it was that I
get straight A's and get no interceptions on Saturday; that doesn't bring in the fans to fill the stadium" (Foxworth). Kevin Anderson, Athletic Director
at University Of Maryland, makes a comment saying "We're providing an opportunity for a lot of young people that wouldn't have that opportunity.
How do you put a price tag on that? How do you put a price tag on education?". (Schooled: The Price of College Sports). Foster states on the contrary,

The Pros And Cons Of The WPA
Drastic times called for drastic measures during the times of the Great Depression. The longest and most severe depression had major negative effects
on unemployment rates, living conditions, health, education, families, and the overall quality of life during the time. In response to all the adversity, the
New Deal allowed one of the most ambitious agencies, the WPA, or theWorks Progress Administration, to be implemented. The WPA lead to major
improvements in social and cultural aspects, large developments for the state of Kentucky and the effects of the WPA were everlasting and can still be
seen today.
For starters, the Works Progress Administration can be considered one of the most beneficial actions of the New Deal, due to the wide variety of
jobs and opportunities that it offered. Not only did it offer jobs, but it pushed for different parts of federal arts to be established. Public projects
allowed for millions of unskilled men, women, and children to be employed and make a living. Projects created for mainly the men included building
roads, schools, museums, community centers, and hospitals. Women, however, were taught to use sewing machines as a form of work, to make
clothing, bedding, and supplies for hospitals and adoptions centers. A significant component of the WPA was incorporating fine arts which allowed for
creativity from writers, painters, actors, and musicians. Overall, the main goal of the WPA was to start public building programs in order to end the

Senior Collegiate Athletic Association : Sport Scandals
On average, there are about 60 major NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) sport scandals per decade. NCAA sport scandals are very
common in any college sport. There is always some sort of scandal going on and many schools have been part of one at some time. There are
various ways for a scandal to happen, from recruiting violations to academic frauds to bribery. There are various penalties issued by the NCAA, but
one penalty, known as the "death penalty" is the worst punishment a program could possibly receive. It is a penalty that can ban a team for multiple
seasons, ban them from postseason play, or even ban them from the sport for life. Therefore, NCAA teams that receive the "death penalty" as their
punishment are typically... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The University of Kentucky (UK) was the first college program to be given the "death penalty." Kentucky had many violations. One thing that
happened was they were guilty of recruiting violations. The coach was also caught giving players financial aid by paying recruits to get them to
commit to Kentucky. He was giving them spending money to let them buy stuff that they couldn 't afford. Another violation the school committed was
academic fraud. They were allowing players to play that were academically unqualified. They were doing these things unfairly to get players to play
for their basketball program. A big reason why Kentucky got the "death penalty" is because of two players: Alex Groza, and Ralph Beard. These two
players took bribes from gamblers to shave points off of the 1952 championship game. What this means is that gamblers paid them to make the games
close, so they could win bets they had placed. After getting caught doing this, the Kentucky Basketball program were given what became known as the
"death penalty." This hurt the program and players involved majorly. For the 1952–53 season Kentucky had no basketball team. They and every other
UK sports team was also banned from postseason play in 1954. Groza and Beard got

There strategy for winning is that they practice every stunt about a hundred times to get it perfect. The girls are also put out of their put out of the
comfort zone, by throwing stunts that go really high up in the air. The girls are mainly supposed to be around 5'1–5'2 and only weigh 98–99 pounds,

Questions On Health Care System
WEAKNESS UKHC is following good strategic measures like focusing on complex patients, using EMR, and large physicians and patient network.
However, the complexity of payment system is considered as major weakness that offers immense pressure on UKHC due to changing health care
reforms (Karpf, Lofgren, Bricker, et al, 2009). Major concerns for UKHC in present situation are,
Changing in reimbursement structures from volume–based payments to quality and outcome based payment structures.
Even though growing in, patient centered and quality care rate there is public concern about the quality, access and safety of care provided.
Growing awareness about medicine and independence of patients are the aspects that are challenging the medical procedures.
Growing healthcare costs Even though the patient sharing is good from bluegrass funding, it is yet to provide leverage for patients form rural and
low economy class. The rate of quality has declined form 12th rank to 19th rank in the recent quality analysis which UKHC need to realize. Extension
of the services is needed for the inpatients and emergency is necessary due to increasing load of patients (Fact book, 2015). Implementation of
extension process is necessary to increase the number of beds and associated staff.
OPPORTUNITIES

Bring more in and keeping the ones we have to longer durations. Assuming the role as a PR practitioner behind this plan and focusing so much on

Systems Theory presents the idea that all organizations and their "parts" are systems that exist in relation to each other, and that the attitudes and
actions of the different parts of the system affect not only the other parts of the organization (or system), but the system as a whole as well. Systems
Theory presents two types of systems, open and closed. An open system reacts, listens to, and embraces its publics, both internal and external, while a
closed system doesn't acknowledge their publics in decision making. A closed system takes note of past decisions and mainly examines the past in
decision making, not it's publics. When applied to my position at NKU as the practitioner, it is important for me to keep in mind the importance of
being an open system. For example, when trying to attract new students it's beyond important to know what these potential students are looking for in a

Tobacco In Kentucky History Essay
Role of Tobacco in Kentucky History
Tobacco existed in Kentucky long before the establishment of the commonwealth Kentucky. Native Americans; such as the Shawnee, utilized tobacco
medicinally and ceremonially. European settlers brought it with them to central and, eventually, western Kentucky, and until the late 1920s, Kentucky
produced more tobacco than any other state. Kentucky remained the largest burley and dark tobacco producer, and ranked second, in total pounds
produced, to North Carolina.
Aside from recreational and ceremonial use, some Native American tribes and European Americans remedies involved tobacco, including pain–easing
salves, fighting labor pains, using smoke for colic and asthma, and chewing to soothe toothaches (Campbell). In 1964, the US Surgeon General
released its first report regarding smoking hazards. Later reports offered specific warnings about tobacco use, including heart and ... Show more content

to see that a majority of the students kept close to their parents, some of them stayed glued to their cell phones, rolled their eyes when their parents
asked them to put their phones away, and continuously complained asking "when will this be over?". Some students appeared to be more
reserved, looking anxious, almost as if they felt like they did not belong. I was there once, as I am sure many soon to be college students have

The Pros And Cons Of College
"Remember when you were little and you'd fall on the trampoline and everyone would keep jumping so you couldn't get back up? That's college."
–Unknown
College is said to provide individuals of a better career opportunity, secured job, and higher paycheck. Every year, students all around globe debate on
what college they want to attend, or if they want to attend college at all. In the United States, only 65.9 percent of students, who has graduated from
high school the previous spring, had chose to enrolled into college (Norris, para. 2). So the question here is, if college is so great, why are the percent
of participants so low? In this paper, two universities, University of Kentucky and University of Louisville, will be compared by their admission rates,
prices, and student to faculty ratio.
In 2017, college admission rate dropped as low as 4.65% for the first time ever ("Admission Statistic", par. 2). College is competitive even for those
who are extremely intelligent. In the University of Kentucky, admission rate is around 70 percent ("UK Acceptance Rate", par. 2). The average
composite score is roughly a 21, meaning that about 50 percent of test–takers score below a 21 (Ellen, par. 5). This college's requirement for ACT
ranges from a 23 to a 28, according to acceptancerate.com ("UK Acceptance Rate", par. 2). The GPA, following the admission rate and ACT, is

women wouldn't actually have the motivation to want to eat better and live a healthier life, because they would already be satisfied with how they
look. While Sterbenz brings up valid points, she weakens the argument by contradicting her own statements, and unwittingly promoting unhealthy
eating habits and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She herself even says "although some models may not live the healthy lifestyle, all models have the healthy body and skinny body shape that every girl
wants" (Sterbenz), which blatantly implies that it is fine to expose yourself to an unhealthy living style, like models do, just so you can attain that
"ideal" body. It is estimated that "around 31.2% of models have or have had an eating disorder, and around 48.7% do "fasts", cleanses or otherwise
restrict their food intake over short periods to lose weight" (The Model Alliance). So, if these so called "ideals" when it comes to body image go
to such extremes in order to attain, or maintain, their slim bodies, what kind of message does it send to women to say they should emulate them? In
defense of her stance, Sterbenz asks, in a sort of sarcastic way, if skinny models are "really damaging our society," to which the response is clearly
yes, as represented by the fact that in just "three years' exposure to Western imagery, the island of Becker's percentage of teens who made themselves
throw up to control their weight had risen from zero to more than 11 percent" (Barclay). This is an astonishing, and frankly disturbing feat, which truly
shows the power these images have over people.
In any case, as opposed to other body types, skinny models provide unrealistic ideals and lowers the self–esteem of young girls and women. When
advertising utilizes skinny models, it sets these

Should College Athletes Be Paid? Essay
Imagine getting up at 6 a.m. for a morning working, going to class from about 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., having practice from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and then
going to study tables for about two hours after practice. This is just a typical day in the life of a college athlete. During the seasons they are putting
in upwards of 12 hours a day into their school work and sport, and have only a reduced tuition and the pride of representing their university to show
for it. College athletes are working full time jobs and providing universities with billions of dollars, its time that these athletes should have the
opportunities they deserve. Whether that is to either go directly in professional sports, or be paid by the NCAA. This topic is often brought up in the
world of college sports and is continuing to pick up steam as college athletics gain popularity. While these athletes do sign letters of intents stating that
they are still amateur athletes and must remain amateurs throughout their years of competing in college, that it goes against our American belief that
allows everybody a chance to pursue their dreams. The system in place now requires these young athlete to sacrifice a year of their professional careers
to go to college and without any intentions of graduating with a degree. According to Raymond Schneider, one of the main arguments against paying
athletes is that recruits will choose the big universities and that will completely eliminate the process of recruiting that has

  • 3. Essay about Coming to America Life is about making choices, but some of them can even change our life. Two years ago I decided to come to America for my higher studies in Western Kentucky University. Although I knew it was really a challenge to me, this significant decision that I've made was going to change everything about my life and me. There are many things in life that can change the course of a person's life. It can either make a positive impact or a negative impact on a person's life. It's always best to have the positive impact though. For me I have had a positive experience that has changed my life forever and that is coming to a different land and culture. Arriving in a new country was exciting and discomforting. America is a wonderful place to live, which is full of adventure and challenges. I was attracted by the Western culture. Meanwhile, different languages also troubled me. Although I began to learn English in elementary school from ABC, my listening and oral abilities tend not to be adequate. I have to study hard to improve my English, so that I can understand what the people said. Since I came to America, I made great progress not only with foreign languages but also with my adaptive capabilities. From what I saw, read, and talked with my friends, I realized that I am improving more and more. In the past two years, I learned a lot more here. This experience not only broadens my view but also enriches my life. It changed my life for the good. I am a changed and a better person, I have direction for my life, and I have an amazing friend circle. I have acquired the new way the thing's are done around here and go with the flow, while maintaining my old values and customs. According to me people come to the States to pursue many interests. But in my opinion, coming to this country as a student is the best way to feel its pulse. Until now my experiences in this country had been very special to me. For the first time, I had to be away from my family. I was forced to make every decision without being reliant on the wisdom of elders. For the first time, I saw and spoke to ... • 4. Transition In College When starting college the transition can be very hectic, it can cause much stress to some and to others it can be a very smooth transition as if nothing has changed. This has a big thing to do with the social norms, culture, geographics, socialization, and assimilation. Many students travel across the world to go to college in various different places to explore different places that have different cultures in which they are not used to. This can be a very hard thing to do but many students do it without a second thought in their mind about what it could mean for the change in social norms that they will have to adapt to once they move to the other places. They also do not think about how different it will be as far as culture goes when going... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of this socialization will come from communicating with new people on campus and interacting with peers that you have classes with or maybe even pass on a daily basis. An example of socialization that many people like myself for instance would be the professors giving out syllabus and having an set schedule for you to go by displaying everything for that course, or maybe the rules and regulations of school policy as to where there were none back home where you came from. In which many students are not used to when coming from a place like high school or maybe no school at all. In college you are independent and that is a big leap from high school where the teachers were more active in reminding students about deadlines for assignments. Another great example of these different socialization norms would be like if someone was used to calling people by there first name but once you reach college you are required to call professors by their professional title or else they will feel offended. Students that need assistance form those professors now have to professionally address them to receive assistance or help regarding late submissions for work. These are all examples of socialization for college students just starting college and it can become very overwhelming and confusing. Especially if you are living on your own for the first time and you have never been on your own so far away from home. This is especially tough if you are living on your own for the first time. You may have once had a curfew, and now you might be able to stay out as long as you like. Your parents might have taken care of all sorts of things you now have to deal with, like paying bills, doing laundry and other basic cleaning. In five compact chapters, they outline major influences and developments of the frontier, statehood, Civil War, industrial, and modern periods. Seven other chapters are thematic, focusing on Kentucky government, regions and regionalism, agricultural and material culture, commercial transformation, literature and music, and demography. Instead, individual courage and achievement are emphasized as the dominant engines of progress. Of course, remarkable individuals do shape history, but in this concise history heroic individuals seem to create collective reform and resistance rather than emerge from them. Eijah Marrs leads black troops into battle for the Union and later speaks for black rights (121). But the populist black "Union Leagues" in which he participated after the war to resist widespread white–on–black violence of Redemption–era Kentucky are missing. Coal miner Sam Hawkins struggles to provide for his family in Depression–era Letcher County (133), but there is no reference to the formative class and unionization struggles in 1930s eastern Kentucky coalfields. Muhammad Ali (178–79) refuses induction into the army, is vindicated by the Supreme Court, and regains his heavyweight title. But the context of the anti–Vietnam war movement and black resistance is omitted; here, Ali's historical significance rests more on his reconciliation with his native Louisville rather than his contributions to the black power movement. Commercially successful country or mountain singers merit praise (155–58), but there is no mention of influential "message" singers such as Molly Jackson, Sarah Ogan Gunning, or Florence Reece. Wendell Berry, justifiably called "the greatest living Kentucky writer," appears as a lone oracle imploring Kentuckians to protect their environment from industrial plunder (150). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a term plastered across buildings and campus–wide emails. Diversity is a word a majority of students feel well and truly acquainted with, and for good reason. The standard answer I have received when I ask students what diversity means to them relates to the coming together of different cultures. The exercise of this understood definition is seen plainly on the campus of EKU. The encouragement of diversity has encouraged me to experience other cultures in ways I would not have had opportunities to otherwise. The exposure to the word itself, however, has challenged me to look beyond the common understanding of the word. As an English major (with a literature concentration!) I love words. I love to look up their meanings and see how many different ways those meanings can be interpreted and applied to assorted situations. When I looked into the word diversity, I found that, while most commonly applied to multiculturalism in various settings, it can be applied to countless other aspects of life as well. Some of these areas, like diversity in foods, are also aspects of diversity in cultures. In a way, one can lead to the other. For example, I was recently introduced to Indian food while I was overseas. In my opinion, it is the best food ever. The Effects Of Sexual Assault On College Campuses Look around at four of your female friends; according to "Not Alone," a US Government report on sexual assault, by the time you graduate college, one of you will become a victim of sexual assault. For years, schools have struggled with figuring out how to handle this epidemic. Many schools just don't focus on sexual assault; for example, according to Rolling Stone's article, "Rolling Stone and UVA: The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism Report" by Sheila Coronel, Steve Coll, and Derek Kravitz, The University of Virginia has expelled 183 students for academic dishonesty and 0 students for sexual assault. This shows how policymakers have pushed sexual assault to the side for decades on college campuses, despite frequent protests and requests from students for colleges to make campuses safer. Sexual assaults on college campuses have been mishandled throughout history, and colleges that have made policy changes have often made ineffective or misguided choices. Colleges need to adopt a "yes means yes" policy for verbal consent and should model their policies after the University of Kentucky's successful "green dot" program. Before discussing the sexual assault crisis on college campuses, it is important to disprove some misconceptions. When someone reports a sexual assault, society tends to immediately deny the assault happened, claiming false accusation, but, according to Stanford's "Men Against Abuse Now" report, only two percent of allegations are false, a ... Their event was named "It 's time for a treat." The symphony was conducted by Dr. Brain St. John. Before it began, I read over the program that was handed out to find out basic information. The history of the pieces helped in understanding them. The concert featured many well–known works by famous composers such as Camille Saint–Saens, Modest Mussorgsky, and Berlioz. The three pieces that are the most memorable in my mind are "Overture to La Cenerentola", "LГ ci darem la mano", and March to the Scaffold from Symphonie Fantastique. Beginning with the first piece called "Overture to La Cenerentola" composed by Gioachino Rossini in 1817. It was part of the Rossini 's version of the opera, Cinderella. An overture is used to capture the audience 's attention. It informs the audience the concert is about to begin. This piece is still a good selection for an overture. The contrasting soft and loud pitches made a good way to get the audience 's attention. Also the brass section became a vital piece towards the end with the intense The increasing and decreasing tempo seemed like a good warning that the main event was about to begin. I really enjoyed this music. I felt like it was light because of how the strings and woodwinds interacted. This helped the mood in the room go from somber to upbeat. • 30. Questions On Health Care System WEAKNESS UKHC is following good strategic measures like focusing on complex patients, using EMR, and large physicians and patient network. However, the complexity of payment system is considered as major weakness that offers immense pressure on UKHC due to changing health care reforms (Karpf, Lofgren, Bricker, et al, 2009). Major concerns for UKHC in present situation are, Changing in reimbursement structures from volume–based payments to quality and outcome based payment structures. Even though growing in, patient centered and quality care rate there is public concern about the quality, access and safety of care provided. Growing awareness about medicine and independence of patients are the aspects that are challenging the medical procedures. Growing healthcare costs Even though the patient sharing is good from bluegrass funding, it is yet to provide leverage for patients form rural and low economy class. The rate of quality has declined form 12th rank to 19th rank in the recent quality analysis which UKHC need to realize. Extension of the services is needed for the inpatients and emergency is necessary due to increasing load of patients (Fact book, 2015). Implementation of extension process is necessary to increase the number of beds and associated staff. OPPORTUNITIES UKHC has more scope for expansion of its network and associated health care programs. Based on the aging population of Kentucky there is a need to initiate a long–term care unit in ... Bring more in and keeping the ones we have to longer durations. Assuming the role as a PR practitioner behind this plan and focusing so much on students and the internal environment at NKU three theories relevant are Systems Theory, Social Exchange Theory, and Social Learning Theory. Systems Theory presents the idea that all organizations and their "parts" are systems that exist in relation to each other, and that the attitudes and actions of the different parts of the system affect not only the other parts of the organization (or system), but the system as a whole as well. Systems Theory presents two types of systems, open and closed. An open system reacts, listens to, and embraces its publics, both internal and external, while a closed system doesn't acknowledge their publics in decision making. A closed system takes note of past decisions and mainly examines the past in decision making, not it's publics. When applied to my position at NKU as the practitioner, it is important for me to keep in mind the importance of being an open system. For example, when trying to attract new students it's beyond important to know what these potential students are looking for in a college. You have no idea the impact you have made on not only my life, but so many others. Speaking on behalf of my peers, you truly are a one–of–a–kind and remarkable professor. In my time at Eastern Kentucky University as an undergrad in the History Department, I had my fair share of good, bad and okay professors. You are in none of those categories because you created one for yourself. My first class with you was American Civilization from 1877. I couldn't tell you the course number, but I can remember sitting at the Mary Todd Lincoln House while working as a docent and reading the assigned texts. It was a competitive two hours' worth of entertainment, resulting in the final score of The Kentucky Wildcats 93 points and The Monmouth Hawks with 76. I am proud of myself for putting myself out there and attending this event. Was I glad I attended? Yes and No. I am glad I attended because I got to experience something that most students cannot, seeing their team play at Madison Square Garden. I am not glad that I attended because the traveling costs were quite above my margins. The days' worth of spending money totaled to around forty dollars. Which for a college student such as myself is exorbitant. The train ride itself, round trip, cost around $32.50. An after eating lunch in the city, my spending's were exceeding my limit. I learned that it is okay to splurge once in a while on something special, and not to feel guilty when it comes to those occasions in life. 5.Based on my experience, I would only recommend this activity to specific students. Unfortunately, there will most likely not be another game of this stature since it was a special event, but I would advise attending a regular season Monmouth University basketball game held at the school. The reason why I find this event caters to a specific audience is because it is a sporting event. Obviously, it is best to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Tobacco In Kentucky History Essay Role of Tobacco in Kentucky History Tobacco existed in Kentucky long before the establishment of the commonwealth Kentucky. Native Americans; such as the Shawnee, utilized tobacco medicinally and ceremonially. European settlers brought it with them to central and, eventually, western Kentucky, and until the late 1920s, Kentucky produced more tobacco than any other state. Kentucky remained the largest burley and dark tobacco producer, and ranked second, in total pounds produced, to North Carolina. Aside from recreational and ceremonial use, some Native American tribes and European Americans remedies involved tobacco, including pain–easing salves, fighting labor pains, using smoke for colic and asthma, and chewing to soothe toothaches (Campbell). In 1964, the US Surgeon General released its first report regarding smoking hazards. Later reports offered specific warnings about tobacco use, including heart and ... The government finally dispersed the ATC's monopoly in 1911. During World War I, prices rose with the growing popularity of blended cigarettes, but dropped soon after. Kentucky burley farmers responded with an initially successful Burley Tobacco Growers Co–operative Association that was inactive by 1926. In doing so, I participated in miscellaneous activities around campus. I spent one hour giving a tour of the campus to perspective high–school students from around the country. This opened my eyes to the importance of visiting a place before someone makes a decision on moving there. Personally, I committed to going to a college without visiting the campus first which in turn hurt me because I did not feel any sort of familiarity which led to uncomfortable feelings. There were a few students that were very talkative, asking questions, talking amongst other students, and letting their parents walk amongst themselves so that they could get to know other students. I was surprised to see that a majority of the students kept close to their parents, some of them stayed glued to their cell phones, rolled their eyes when their parents asked them to put their phones away, and continuously complained asking "when will this be over?". Some students appeared to be more reserved, looking anxious, almost as if they felt like they did not belong. I was there once, as I am sure many soon to be college students have been. One student flew all the way from California to tour Union's campus, and he looked uneasy. While discussing the small town surrounding the school and the closest mall, movie theater, etc. I heard him say to her father "I'm not sure if this is the right school for me, it's just so far away from everything and home". Laine Sterbenz, A Student From The University Of Kentucky Laine Sterbenz, a student from the University of Kentucky and popular blogger on Odyssey, concludes that skinny models give girls and women motivation to live healthier lifestyles in a way no other body type could. In her post, she argues that models have that skinny body that is desired by every girl, the ideal to work to attain. She then continues into saying that if overweight models were to be used, or even average sized ones, then women wouldn't actually have the motivation to want to eat better and live a healthier life, because they would already be satisfied with how they look. She herself even says "although some models may not live the healthy lifestyle, all models have the healthy body and skinny body shape that every girl wants" (Sterbenz), which blatantly implies that it is fine to expose yourself to an unhealthy living style, like models do, just so you can attain that "ideal" body. It is estimated that "around 31.2% of models have or have had an eating disorder, and around 48.7% do "fasts", cleanses or otherwise restrict their food intake over short periods to lose weight" (The Model Alliance). So, if these so called "ideals" when it comes to body image go to such extremes in order to attain, or maintain, their slim bodies, what kind of message does it send to women to say they should emulate them? In defense of her stance, Sterbenz asks, in a sort of sarcastic way, if skinny models are "really damaging our society," to which the response is clearly yes, as represented by the fact that in just "three years' exposure to Western imagery, the island of Becker's percentage of teens who made themselves throw up to control their weight had risen from zero to more than 11 percent" (Barclay). This is an astonishing, and frankly disturbing feat, which truly shows the power these images have over people. Essay Imagine getting up at 6 a.m. for a morning working, going to class from about 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., having practice from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and then going to study tables for about two hours after practice. This is just a typical day in the life of a college athlete. During the seasons they are putting in upwards of 12 hours a day into their school work and sport, and have only a reduced tuition and the pride of representing their university to show for it. College athletes are working full time jobs and providing universities with billions of dollars, its time that these athletes should have the opportunities they deserve. Whether that is to either go directly in professional sports, or be paid by the NCAA. This topic is often brought up in the world of college sports and is continuing to pick up steam as college athletics gain popularity. While these athletes do sign letters of intents stating that they are still amateur athletes and must remain amateurs throughout their years of competing in college, that it goes against our American belief that allows everybody a chance to pursue their dreams. The system in place now requires these young athlete to sacrifice a year of their professional careers to go to college and without any intentions of graduating with a degree.
