Public Sphere
Jürgen Habermas' "The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere" discusses his analysis on
publicity. The article is a historical–sociological account of the rise, change and breakdown of the
public sphere. Even though publicity originated in the 18th century, it is still prevalent in today's
society. Throughout the article, Habermas discusses the vastness of the public sphere. Habermas
states that the public sphere is a sphere in which private people join together to form a public.
Several important concepts, arguments and themes are discussed throughout the article, the chief
ones being the distinction between private and public, structural transformation and contemporary
politics. One of the main questions that Habermas poses is whether ... Show more content on

The relationship between the two elements is vigorous and intricate. In his analysis, Habermas
traces public and private back to Ancient Greece and then onwards to the Middle Ages, where
separation existed, and present day. After the development of the economy and the modern state,
public and private adopted their present form. The term public refers to public authority of the state,
while private refers to the family, society and the economy. Institutions and laws are the elements
that differentiate the two from each other. In modern society, there is a loss of discrepancy between
public and private. Instead, there is one societal multipart that exists, similar to that of the one that
existed in the Middle Ages. Habermas evaluates that the public sphere in its traditional system no
longer exists in today's society.
The main concept of Habermas' piece is structural transformation. Structural transformation is the
progression by which the public sphere moves from being the core of the rational–critical debate to
a degraded form of its prior self. Habermas concludes that the transformation occurred due to
changes in social, political and economic structures of society. The primary structural change was
the division between public and

Harry In Micheal Crichton's Sphere
In the novel "Sphere by Micheal Crichton, it entails of a psychatrist sent to the underwater site
of a "plane crash" where they later find the craft is from the future or a alien power.
Once they later inspect the ship more they see that it contains a sphere like object that has the power
to manifest the thoughts (or in the crew's case nightmares) of whoever interacted and went
inside of it.
Although this novel is, of course, a science fiction, it does possess some biological facts. Small
details such as the stings of jellyfish venomous stings killing their crew member, a cold water rush
having the ability to kill Norman, a series of glasses breaking around Norman once the oxygen was
removed from the room, not being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though these are just details these are some things that i noticed that were left in the novel and not
brought into the movie. In the novel the ship was attacked multiple times by a squid were in the
movie they only showed one attack. They also removed some fun from the novel too because the
reader was allowed to figure the code out but in the movie Harry solved the code all by himself.
Even the characters main story points were changed like how Beth was left conscious and only
anxious when she set the bomb but in the novel she was unconcious not allowing them to change the
time setting. But even though they had many differences they kept some parts similar like they both
included the code, destruction of habitats, and forgetting completely about the bomb.
This novel gave inspiration for some technology that can be made in the future such a deep

normal use. This novel presents inventions that i believe will be normalized in thr future such as

Construction Of The Public Sphere
Gerard Hauser critiques Habermas' construction of the public sphere, pointing out many of its
weaknesses. Hauser does concede that Habermas' ideas about the public sphere are meant to focus
solely on the bourgeois public sphere and not include all public spheres; however, Habermas' critics
have approached his model as universal, so it needs to be examined, contextually, as an approach to
universally understanding public spheres (47–48).
Because Hauser's approach to the public sphere is more dynamic than Habermas', by that I mean
that it purposefully engages multiple public spheres– their individual autonomy as well as their
influence on other public spheres– differences between the two rationales are presented. Hauser
points to six crucial differences, where he feels that Habermas missed the mark at understanding the
transformation of the public sphere. Hauser is concerned with how discourse "realistically" happens
within the public sphere, whereas, he argues, Habermas' argument is contingent on the existence of
"ideal speech" (46).
Hauser's first problem with Habermas' theory of the public sphere is that in order for Habermas'
ideas to work, they need to be the only public sphere, that is, a universal public sphere. This is not
accurate of how discourse functions. Many discourse communities or public spheres function on
their own and have influence on each other. To suggest that there is only one public sphere forces
others to conform to that one universal

Exploring The Earth
The origins and improvement of scientific knowledge can be discovered by investigating children's
understanding of the earth. (Panagiotaki, et al, 2006) This report will focus on how children respond
to the shape of the Earth, which is an analysis and partly replication of the result of the experiment
done by Vosniadou & Brewer in 1992. According to their research, by interpreting everyday
experience, children initially believe that the earth is a flat object. Some think that our earth is flat
and rectangular while others assume that it is flat and shaped like a disc. Then, during the process of
knowledge acquirement, children are exposed to the socially accepted knowledge that the Earth is
spherical. Nonetheless, because of the influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Frède et al, 2011). In another case study, it is reported that age is a crucial foreteller and children
aged 10 and above gain a "considerable amount of scientific knowledge of the earth." (Straatemeir
et al, 2008) This is due to the fact that when children get older, they will have more scientifically
correct knowledge of the earth. Additionally, they also state that age exerts a huge influence on the
consistency of children's answers. This is attributed to the fact that the consistency was lower for
younger children. (Straatemeier et al, 2008). The more knowledgeable the children are, the more
consistent their answers are.
Besides, children's understanding of the form of the earth is associated significantly with gender
differences. Previous case studies have expressed that boys are better at scientific knowledge,
including the understanding of the structure of our earth than girls. Straatemeir (2008) argues that
the boys are supposed to have a considerably higher consistency mark as did the girls. (0.60 and
0.18 respectively) In addition to that, it is suggested that males have the wider knowledge of
scientific problems. When working in a group, males are likely to be not only more clear–headed
but also more confident and informative than their female peers while mentioning scientific matters.
Moreover, this finding remains unchanged

Like having a little faith Jesus Christ can make your faith grow. In order for Jesus Christ to use us
we need to submit fully to Him. We must study the word of God, so we know how to be obedient to
Him, furthermore the word teaches us what God expects from us. When we submit totally to Jesus
Christ He gives us strength to bare our cross, also when we submit to God He gives us strength to do
His work. Hebrews 13:21 says God will, "Make you perfect in every good work to do his will,
working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for
ever and ever. Amen". By submitting to God, He will reveal to you what it is He would have you to
do, but we have to submit first. When we are doing God's work people should see some evident of
God in us our spirit should bear fruit that people can see. Paul said to the Galatians, "But the fruit of
the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance"
Galatians 5:22–23a. A person who has submitted to God, should show these signs. Also, we ought to
seek the mind of Jesus Christ so He can instruct us in all spiritual things. Smith Wigglesworth said,
"We must seek to have the mind of God in all things. If we don't, we will stop His workings. He
wants us every day to live in the Spirit so that all of the revelations of God are just like a canvas

The Public Sphere Within Theatre
The Public Sphere within theatre was a concept that was first delineated by philosopher Jurgen
Habermas in his book titled The structural transformation of the public sphere, in which he refers to
the right that all citizens hold, the right to participate and engage into discussions on public matters
of interest and public issues. Habermas writes: "the audience does not constitute a space for
spectators and listeners but a space for speakers and addresses who engage in debate." (Habermas in
Balme 2012). The Public sphere has now become a space, a stage, for performers, speakers and
protesters to have a voice rather than for the preliminary use of entertainment for the audience,
spectators and listeners.
On reading Christopher B. Balme's The theatrical public sphere, the concept of theatre's role in the
Public Sphere is explored. Balme traces the origins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Academic and artistic interest in something is usually a sure sign that matters are unclear,
conceptual boundaries are blurred and that old certainties are anything but that. There is also little
doubt that the major challenges we face: the media revolution, globalization and migration, climate
change, the erosion of public finances and services (to name just a few) – have all in some way a
bearing on the public sphere, the realm where issues are debated and where citizens are free to enter
and engage in discourse. As the public sphere is primarily a discursive arena located outside and
between state bureaucracies on the one hand and economics and business on the other, it occupies a
crucial role in the functioning of so–called free societies. The question to be explored here is what
role theatre and performance in practice play in this realm and how performance and theatre theory
can contribute to the debates." (Balme

Hitler was not very powerful back then before he joined the German army. This made him very
popular. So people he met from the German army wanted him to join and take over as chancellor of
Germany. When he got what he wanted he was showing this leadership to Germany with the help of
the Nazi clan.
Exercise of power
Hitler's source of power was being the chancellor of Germany and the leader of the Nazi part. Hitler
went through a lot of things before he got to these positions. He has to prove that he was doing all
the good stuff for the Germany and the whole world but he actually wasn't. He wanted to be the
strongest person in the world so he got people from other country's to help him out but the us
refused to join him. He had 1 goal in life before he was in power and that was becoming an artist but

Factors In Air-Breathing Vertebrates
In air–breathing vertebrates, the tidal volume of the lungs is the amount of air normally inhaled,
while the lung capacity is the maximum amount of air inhaled. In this experiment, a round balloon is
utilized to measure both the tidal volume and the lung capacity. Furthermore, students explored
possible factors impacting the vital capacity. Students established that body position is one factor
that has an impact on vital capacity. In this case, a standing position versus a seated position,
provides more room for the expansion of the chest cavity, thus allowing more air to be inhaled,
resulting in increased lung capacity.
Keywords: vertebrates, tidal volume, lungs, lung capacity, factors, impact, position, expansion
Introduction
In air–breathing vertebrates, the lungs are "two large organs of respiration located in the chest cavity
and responsible for adding oxygen to and removing carbon dioxide from the blood" (Encyclopædia
Britannica, 1) The lungs expand and contract with each breath, and the amount of air moving in and
out of the lungs can vary. A diagram of the lungs is represented in the appendix Diagram, labeled as
Figure 1. To establish the amount of air inhaled, lung capacity needs to be established. Lung
capacity can be measured either using a spirometer (Encyclopædia Britannica, 1) or simply by using
a round balloon. The amount of air inhaled in a single breath is called the tidal volume. "In the
average adult, tidal volume is about 0.5 liters. However, the lungs

The Element Of Light And Shadow
This freestanding, subtractive sculpture depicts a young mother comfortably kneeling and cradling
her breastfeeding baby. The young mother's features are very delicate and fair; her gaze falls
lovingly upon the infant who gazes back at her. Both figures are unclothed with minimal space
between them. The scale is similar to that of a real mother and baby, but perhaps a little bit smaller.
The sculpture is carved from a pure white piece of marble without natural flecks of color or coloring
additions. The element of light and shadow helps to make the figures appear very realistic. For
instance, gradual, minute depressions made in the sculpture are affected by shadow and suggest
anatomical structure beneath the figures' skin. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, using perfectly white marble reflects the innocence and purity possessed by the mother and
baby. This quality is also maintained by the texture; there are no impurities or roughness to be
found. In addition to reflecting purity, the smooth texture provides the work with an aura of calming
softness that helps to highlight the serenity of the scene. As mentioned in the description, the use of
line is also very delicate. The artist might have made them sharp and angular, but instead, he used
lines that are curved, gradual, and smooth. This contributes to the loving, gentle quality of the
artwork. Another way that the artist has achieved a peaceful scene is by limiting the principle of
movement. One can imagine the baby wiggling its toes or the young mother slightly readjusting her
position, but that is the extent of the movement suggested. As has been described, the harmonious
result of the art elements is a pure, peaceful, and tender scene. As a young girl, I remember going to
the Springville Museum of Art on a field trip and seeing this work of art. At first, I was a bit shocked
due to the mother's lack of clothing; however, I noticed that her nakedness was not portrayed in a
disrespectful way. Despite being a bit disturbed, I was able to recognize something pure and
genuinely sweet about the statue. As I have revisited this artwork, I've become less troubled by it
and more aware of its tender and even divine

Music Of Spheres
In the poem "Music of Spheres" by Jean Fallain, who was a French author, poet, and corporate
lawyer, describes a deeper meaning of the sad story. The setting is on a frozen road under a starry
star with three characters are a man, an old can, and the stars. The man is making his way down the
frozen road. He does not seem to be cold or any hurry. He carries in his pocket some jingling keys.
The action begins with a man who is wandering, lost, or without specific purpose and destination.
Then the action is transferred to the can, empty and cold, which is the next leg of this journey. The
final leg is a wobbling and then stopping. Follain has successfully used the feeling, the sound, and
the moment to reflect and its deeply symbolic meaning of this poem.
The words "frozen road" and the "cold emptiness" can capture the picture of the road and the man
which was almost the same. At the beginning of the poem "He was walking a frozen road", Fallain
has given us the very first side of the story. It is not a normal road at night, but it is "a frozen road".
The road freezes, and no one want to walk in that road on the night time. The heart of the man is
frozen as the road. Everything is frozen and empty, and he is black of hope. The "cold emptiness"
can is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

It describes the man's pathway from trauma and depression to hope and wonderful future. Also,
there is a message that the author gives us. Whenever you are hopefulness, do not give up, stay hold

The Farnese Atlas Analysis
Atlas by Vik Muniz is a colossal photographic portrait made from trash. Using garbage scavenged
from Gramacho, one of the largest landfills in America, Muniz models trash into images of classical
portraits with his own twist. "...I'm trying to step away from the realm of fine arts, I think it's a very
exclusive, very restrictive place to be... What I want to be able to do is to change the lives of people
with the same materials they deal with every day", Muniz stated in film Wasteland. The film
Wasteland, directed by Lucy Walker, tracks the development of Muniz' series of monumental
photographic portraits made from trash. The Farnese Atlas is a 2nd–century Roman marble replica
of a Hellenistic sculpture of Atlas, a Titan sentenced by Zeus to hold up his burden for eternity,
kneeling with the celestial spheres of the sky weighing down heavily on his shoulders. The Farnese
Atlas is an enormous sculpture standing at seven feet tall and is currently located at the National
Archaeological Museum of Naples, in Italy. Although their actual form and matter are different, both
the Atlas and The Farnese Atlas are similar in the way that both paintings portray a male character
with a serious or stern expression, carrying a large spherical burden or load on their shoulders. Also,
both pieces seem to be copies of other pieces made before their own time. Vik Muniz's Atlas is his

Precision And Accuracy Lab Report
Determining the Density of a Polystyrene Sphere with Precision and Accuracy
Abstract: The objective of the lab is to determine the volumes of the polystyrene spheres with three
different measuring tools: Water Displacement, Analytical Scale, and Triple Beam Balance Scale.
The experiment is meant to help understand the concept and application of precision and accuracy in
experimental measurements. Accuracy is a measure of how closely the results of repeated
measurements are to the true value of what is being measured. Precision is the variability in the
results from the repeated measurements, and how close the repeated measurements were to one
another. In this lab, the method for measuring the volume of the polystyrene spheres is done with the
previously stated tools: Water Displacement, Analytical Scale, and Triple Beam Balance Scale. The
standard deviation for the entire classes volumes and masses are recorded to determine the densities.
Introduction: Accuracy and precision were the major aspects of the lab. Accuracy is how close the
average of the measured values are to the actual value. Precision is the closeness of repeated
measurements. In the lab, the aim was to get as close as possible with both accuracy and precision
when determining the mass and volume of the spheres. The mass was determined by weighing the
spheres on the Analytical Scale and Triple Beam Balance Scale. The volume is determined by
measuring with a ruler and by water displacement. The standard

Archimedes Of Syracuse Essay
During the classical period of civilization, many technological advancements became uncovered,
providing the foundations of a modern society that exists currently. The development of food
production, weaponry, architecture, science, and mathematics led to this great progress. People
began to possess critical thinking skills that allowed for more complex ideas and concepts. For
instance, Ancient Greece created Democracy, China instituted large trading networks, and India
developed advanced knowledge of general health. Earth would not possess nearly as many people as
it does today without these significant, milestone discoveries. This ability to think innovatively
allowed humanity to evolve and progress drastically. Archimedes of Syracuse is one of those
individuals responsible for creating and composing concepts that left lasting effects on human
civilization with a profound intellect. Born approximately 287 BC in Syracuse located at Sicily,
Greece, he possessed an interest in solving situations (Editors). This Greek city– state was originally
established by Corinth as a colony until a future uprising changed it to a democratic government. In
the end, it would eventually fall under Roman rule. Regardless, his father, Phidias was an
astronomer and therefore, surely influenced the young thinker into a life of math and science. Some
historians believe that Archimedes also has relations to King Hieron along with his son, Gelon, who
also lived in Syracuse; however, not much is

The sculpture has a rustic quality, and draws one's eye to it because of its large scale. The art brings a
purpose and beautifies a long time empty property between two local businesses. It resides next to a
sidewalk outside of the local bike shop, brewery, and Laundromat. Next to the "Sphere of Influence"
is a sign picketed that states "Art is for admiring, mountains are for climbing," which mean please
do not climb on the sculpture. This is significant because when I stood admiring the statue a little
boy ran up and started hanging off the wheels and poking his head into the centre of the sphere.
Because the artist used bike wheels as the main medium the "Sphere of Influence" may influence
one to enjoy biking. "Arco Bears" by John Mckinnon is a sculpture of two black identical bears.

Four Nursing Spheres
The practice of nursing is focused on patient safety, quality of care, and better patient outcomes. The
four spheres of political action in nursing are the workplace, government, professional organization
and community (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, & O'Grady, 2016). Each of these spheres functions
independently but they are very much interconnected to create change. First, the workplace sphere
focuses on job issues as well as patient care. Second, the government sphere focuses on laws and
regulations regarding nursing practice. The government plays an important role in influencing
nursing practice. For instance, the government sets policy for the regulation of health care and
health care providers. Third, the professional organization sphere focuses

The Human Condition By Hannah Arendt
Hannah Arendt's most influential work The Human Condition was published in 1958. It makes
distinctions between labor, work and action, between power, violence and strength and between
property and wealth. It is surprising that more than 55 years later the originality and novelty of this
book is still present. Arendt compels the reader to open their eyes and to look at the world and
human affairs in new ways and with a completely different perspective. In her prologue she
professes that she wants us to do "nothing more than to think what we are doing." The Human
Condition is associated with Arendt's work on totalitarianism. The Human Condition and her work
on totalitarianism work together to highlight the contemporary human predicament. Arendt's interest
in human affairs was due to her encounter with Nazis which led to her interest and participation in
political activities. Hannah Arendt developed her philosophy of education during her time in the
United States. Her philosophy is shaped by the political turmoil that played out in public schools at
that time. Arendt was influenced by many philosophers. "One sees Jasper's influence in The Human
Condition in which Arendt developed this idea of action: public, political behavior based on
communication" (Snelgrove, 4). Hannah Arendt was struck by Cal Marx's picture of individuality
which was devoted to production and consumption. For Arendt this is a revealing representation of
modern society in which economic concerns have come

The Trope Of The Sphere
Interestingly, it is via Borges, a well–known master in the creation of literary labyrinths, that we are
able to find several possible explanations for these inner circularities, for instance, through his
recurrent references to the trope of the sphere. Take some of the short fictions that constitute his
1941 volume The Garden of Forking Paths, namely 'Lottery in Babylon' and 'The Library of Babel'.
Not only does Borges tell us that the Babylonians 'obey the dictates of chance, surrender their lives,
their hopes, their nameless terror to it, but it never occurs to them to delve into its labyrinthine laws
or the revolving spheres that manifest its workings' (Borges 1998: 104; emphasis added), but also
his Library of Babel 'is a sphere whose exact center is any hexagon and whose circumference is
unattainable' (113). Moreover, the trope of the sphere 'whose center is everywhere and its
circumference nowhere' would be later analysed by Borges in an essay titled 'Pascal's Sphere'
[1951]. In it, the significance of the sphere as a double paradox of time/infinity and of

The Yellow Wallpaper And Professions For Women
Women And Domesticity
Domestic work and other types of work that is typically associated with women has always been
undervalued and overlooked. Many types of work fall under the umbrella of domestic labor, such as:
cooking, cleaning, mending, child care, running errands, managing the household, and much more.
This type of work is highly undervalued and often ignored. Many of the works that we have looked
at in this section highlight how many women felt about the domestic sphere that they were placed in.
In this essay I will discuss this point using points from "The Yellow Wallpaper" and "Professions
For Women". Both women commented on the domestic sphere for women and what that meant for
them. The Yellow Wallpaper highlights the "separate spheres" ideaology, an ideaology that states
that men and women belong in different spheres of society. A woman 's place in in the home, where
she can carry out her duties as a wife and mother in private while a man 's sphere is the one of the
public domain. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" a woman is diagnosed with "nervous depression" after
the birth of her baby and put on a "rest cure". She spends the entirity of the story in a bedroom of a
house her husbad had rented out for their summer vacation. Being locked in her bedroom causes her
to have a mental breakdown. Gilman had written "The Yellow Wallpaper" to describe her own
experience with depression and the rest cure, prescribed by a renowned psychatrist at the time, who

The Public Sphere By Nancy Fraser
Nancy Fraser's article speaks as both critical analysis and a modern day interpretation Jürgen
Habermas' concept of the public sphere. Through the application of a revisionist historical lens,
Fraser both highlights the limits of the original concept of a single public sphere, and introduces
interpretations of it as applied to modern day social issues. Through these critiques, Fraser is
successful in forwarding the theory of the public sphere as an indispensible element to the
application of critical theory. Drawing on examples in late capitalist societies, Fraser illustrates an
alternate proposal of co–existing multiple public spheres as a more accurate representation of this
theory in practice.
Fraser informs the reader that Habermas' concept of the public sphere served as a regulating force in
the promotion of both democracy, and as a guideline for separation between public and private
areas. This sphere was comprised of politically minded and motivated individuals existing outside of
the realms of government, business and association; with a mandate for debate of matters of public
or common interest; excluding those interests deemed private. Its intention was to serve as
arbitrators between the public and the state. (58) Critics and revisionist historians however state
Habermas' account was an idealized version unrepresentative of the public it claimed to speak for.
Fraser contends the logic of the single public sphere's guiding principles, going so far as suggesting

Aristotle 's Theory Of Falling
My thesis is twofold: Aristotle's empirical arguments supporting the view that the earth is a sphere
are not convincing ; however, his hybrid argument combining a priori and empirical claims based on
his theory of falling succeeds in displacing Pre–Socratic Cosmology and empirically grounding the
creation cosmology of Plato's Timaeus.
Aristotle inherited a tradition of cosmologies espoused by the Presocratics beginning with Thales,
"The Earth floats on water, which is in some way the source of all things" (Kirk B13) . The tradition
continues with Anaximenes, "The earth is flat and rides on air" (B13) and reaches a zenith with
Parmenides, "...there is a furthest limit, it is perfected, like the bulk of a ball well–rounded on every
side, equally balanced in every direction from the center" (Fr. 8 32–49). These three quotes identify
two themes that Aristotle would face while developing his cosmogony: how does the earth maintain
its place in the universe and what is its shape.
Aristotle also labored under the imposing shadow of his teacher Plato who developed his cosmology
in the Timaeus, "...he should fashion the world as a single whole... And he gave it a shape
appropriate to the kind of thing it was... Hence he gave it a round shape, the form of a sphere..."
(Timaeus 33a–b). Plato identifies the correct shape of the earth but he does not argue for this
conclusion. Aristotle will have to ground this idea in empirical science not myth.
The first step for Aristotle in On the Heavens is

The Flight Path From Singapore
3.2 The Haversine formula
The haversine formula is an important equation in navigation, calculating the haversine of the
central angle between two points on a great circle of a sphere using the latitudes and the longitudes
of the two points: sin2 (d2r) = sin2 ( Φ2 – Φ12) + cos (Φ1) cos (Φ2) sin2 ( λ2 – λ12)
where Φ1 and Φ2 denote the latitudes of Singapore and Chicago respectively, and λ1 and λ2 denote
the longitudes of Singapore and Chicago respectively. We can rearrange the haversine formula to
give us the distance d between the two cities.
3.3 The Haversine function
In order to show how the haversine formula is derived, we must first understand the function of the
haversine. The term haversine appears to have originated from "half a versed sine", or "half a
versine". The haversine function is useful as it can calculate the distance of an arc of a great circle.
The flight path from Singapore to Chicago is, in fact, an arc of a great circle.
The versine function is one of many trigonometric functions that were once popular in fields such as
navigation, but now are practically obsolete and are no longer taught in schools. Commonly
abbreviated as versin, the versine function is versin (α) = 1 – cos (α) where α is the variable in the
function. However, this does not seem very useful in the derivation of the haversine formula. We can
manipulate the versine function into a more useful substitution using the half–angle identity sin2
(12α) = [1 – cos (α)] as sin2 (12α)

The Mexican–American community supports the subservient female role in society portraying them
as docile, reliant and obedient to their male accompaniment. The domestic household utility of
Mexican–American woman is symbolized in a variety of household objects including attire that
capitulate their gender representation. For example, as a child, Ermila recognizes her grandmother

The dim glowing of the sphere lit up the pitch black of the room, only enough so that the hand
holding it could be seen. The large audience was a collection of quiet oohing and aahing, barely
audible whispers could be heard from where the sphere was. It took only a second to recapture the
audience's attention as the sphere started to move around slowly, the glow grew stronger, now barely
illuminating a body. The person was controlling the sphere with such ease, as if it was just another
extension of their body. The sphere moved so fluidly over their hands and arms, gliding over and in
between finger tips before returning to its stationary position.

The audience had become a roar of applause and cheer when she stopped. The show was over and

Similarities Between Kepler And Kepler 's Platonist...
According to the common belief during the Middle Ages, the universe was comprised of many
nested celestial spheres, or orbs. According to M.S. Mahoney, an astronomical researcher at
Princeton University, Johannes Kepler, in his physics research, regarded "the spheres" as the
"geometrical spatial regions containing each planetary orbit rather than physical bodies as in
preceding Aristotelian celestial physics". Kepler provided mathematical evidence to this theory,
including the fact that the "eccentricity of each planet's elliptical orbit and its major and minor axes
defined the lengths of the radii of the inner and outer limits of its celestial sphere and, therefore, its
thickness. The role of these geometrical spheres in Kepler's Platonist geometrical cosmology was to
determine the sizes and ordering of the five Platonic polyhedral within which the spheres were
supposedly spatially embedded" (Mahoney). Although each sphere rotated uniformly, the
combination of their separate revolutions prompted the discovery of the appearance of the
irregularity in the motions of the sun and the plants as astronomers viewed from the Earth. The
notion that the planets were celestial three–dimensional spheres rather than concrete two–
dimensional objects contributed to the naming of Pythagoras's theory, known as the Harmony of the
Spheres. The Music of the Spheres, also known as Musica Universalis, originated from the Greek
philosopher, Pythagoras. During his time, the celestial spheres

Separate Spheres
There was no equality between man and woman in the Victorian era. "The patriarchic system was
the norm and women usually led a more secluded, private life. Men, on the other hand, possessed all
kinds of freedom" ("Gender Roles"). Moreover, "the man was naturally the head of the family and
the guardian of family members. He was the protector and the lord. He was strong, brave and hard–
working" ("Gender Roles"). The Victorian era was the time in which the roles of men and women
were defined more strictly than at any other time in history. The Victorians considered males and
females as "Separate Spheres" that met only during meals. According to Hughes, "the ideology of
Separate Spheres rested on a definition of the 'natural' characteristics of women and men. Women
were considered physically weaker yet morally superior to men, what meant that they were best
suited to the domestic sphere" ("Gender roles in the 19th century"). The fact that woman was
morally superior to man led to the belief that "her goal was to bear many children and maintain a
home that her husband did not have to worry about" (berryofthesea). What is surprising is the fact
that even though women were perceived as morally superior, they could neither vote nor sue. ...

It was a common practice in the Victorian era that young men used the services of prostitutes, while
women had to be pure and clean until marriage. Moreover, women "were not even allowed to speak
to men unless there was a married woman present as a chaperone" (Hughes). The inequality is also
evident in the fact that "women were expected to have sex with only one man, their husband.
However, it was acceptable for men to have multiple partners in their life" (Cody

This says that Beth (with the help of Norman) has to make Harry unconscious, so she uses a syringe
to inject the anesthetic into Harry. This means that with Harry unconscious, the manifestations will
stop occurring, that is if Harry was thinking up the manifestations. This proves that people will do
anything when they are put in a certain situation that tests them because Beth has to artfully use an
anesthetic on a colleague by puncturing his shoulder, and only for hope that the manifestations stop
occurring and that she does not die. People do things that they normally would not do when they are
put in certain situation that test them because Beth turned against her own colleague and used an
anesthetic on him to make him unconscious.
In certain situations, people do things that they normally would not do. When Beth is in the presence

manifestations are still occurring. "'Beth, this is crazy. Someone is still making these manifestations.
Who is doing that, Beth?' She smiled slowly a lazy, cat smile, as if he secretly amused her. 'Don't
you really know?' He did know. Yes, he thought. He knew, and it chilled him. 'You're making these
manifestations, Beth.' 'No Norman,' she said, still calm. 'I'm not doing it. You are'" (Crichton 417).

Difference Between Round And Square Donuts
Comparing the volumes of a round and square donut.
Which of these two donuts better fits in a dozen box?

Everybody loves to have a donut every once in a while. It's a tasty desert that nobody can deny;
children all the way to adults love it. I am personally a huge donut lover! When I usually walk
through the mall I find different coffee shops selling square donuts, and not only round ones. This is

While if the producers were to depend on producing round donuts, the donut box would not be
completely filled at the corners, leaving empty spaces at the corner and between two consecutive
donuts. The percentage increase in the amount of donut found per donut suggests as well that it is
better for the producers to make square donuts, which in this case benefits the consumer as well.
One thing that must be taken into consideration when finding the volume of a square donut is that
the corners of this donut are not perfectly edged, which means that even though it fits into a
rectangular box better than a round donut, there are still very minimal empty spaces that are not
covered.
Overall, my aim in this experiment is to prove how it will be efficient to produce a square donut and
depend on it, because it will be a new trend that everyone wants to try, there will be more dough per
donut, price change wouldn't be higher than that of a round donut since the diameter of the circle
and the length of the side of the square donut are the

The Sphere Of Women In The Anebellum Era
In the antebellum era of America, which is the time before America's civil war, there was a call for
justice and liberty. The American Revolution had ended a few years ago, the new Constitution was
in place, and arguments about slavery began. Abolitionists were demanding that slaves be freed
while most of the American population could not decide what to do or said no. This sparked another
argument and fight, women's rights. Religious reasons were being tossed back and forth between the
fight of elevating a woman's status or keeping her where she is. Women of this time wanted to
elevate their status, or change their sphere, from being domestic, pretty, obedient women to being
equal as man. Historians though have different thoughts about the sphere of women. By evaluating
secondary sources and primary sources during and about this time, I can conclude that women did
want to change their sphere and that depending who the woman was determined what sphere she
may be in.
Catherine Clinton is a historian who wrote "The Ties that Bind" which is about the sphere women
were in in the antebellum era. She proposed that the nineteenth century "ushered in a social as well
as an economic revolution for American women." Catherine focuses on the middle class women of
this time and how their spheres impacted them. She believes that due to these spheres women
wanted to rise up and elevate her status to being equal to men. Women of this time had no way of

this stage are those who are witnessing and discipling others, in the same manner that he or she was

encourage, listen to, and strengthen them to maturity in Christ.
The four spheres of relationships are as follows; the relationship with God, the relationship with
family or home, relationship with church and believers, and the relationship with the world. The
most important sphere is the relationship with God. This sphere or the relationship with God needs

A Sphere Poem
In his 2006 collection, 'District and Circle', Seamus Heaney responds to the ever–changing and
developing world around him. To do so he often relies upon the exploration of the past, memory,
and personal identity through the use of language. In the second poem of 'District and Circle', 'A
Shiver', Seamus Heaney is dependent upon these concepts to construct a thematically rich poem.
Heaney's 'A Shiver' utilises language to explore the themes of the past, memory, and personal
identity. The Petrarchan sonnet describes the action of wielding a tool: the energy that is associated
with it, as well as an understanding of the destructive power that it wields: "the way you had to
stand to swing the sledge". By using a Petrarchan sonnet Heaney introduces the concept of the past
within his poetry, due to the historical context of the Renaissance style of writing. The description of
the tool, in past tense and therefore illuminating Heaney's fascination of the past, ultimately leads to
a metaphor in regards to what occurs when strength, and therefore power, falls into the wrong hands.
The tool that is used within 'A Shiver' to demonstrate this power is a sledgehammer – most
commonly used by labourers as a way to demolish material items – and it is implied that Heaney
himself has operated the sledgehammer and is, almost, frightened by its power. This can then be
contributed to the overall metaphor of misused power. This metaphor also demonstrates Heaney's
personal narrative voice within

The Structural Transformation Of The Public Sphere...
Literature Review Jurgen Habermas can be seen as one of the founders of the term and details the
idea of refeudalization in their novel "The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere" in which
he writes how the bourgeois public sphere eroded because of economic and structural changes. The
boundaries between state and society blurred, leading to "a kind of refeudalization of society."
(Habermas, 1989). Essentially state and society became involved in each other's spheres and large
non–governmental organizations replaced the old institutions of the public sphere. Furthermore,
where the public sphere takes on a feudal aspect is the process of politicians and organizations
representing themselves before the voters. (Habermas, 1989). These ideas are then further explained
in more contemporary contexts by Alain Supiot writing that primarily of the refeudalization of law
but also "ignorance of the organization of powers underpinning the government by laws is taking us
back to government by men, that is, to feudal ways of hybridizing the public and the private."
(Supiot, 2013). Then further clarifying that Western feudalism today is the dependency between

Public Sphere

  • 1. Public Sphere Jürgen Habermas' "The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere" discusses his analysis on publicity. The article is a historical–sociological account of the rise, change and breakdown of the public sphere. Even though publicity originated in the 18th century, it is still prevalent in today's society. Throughout the article, Habermas discusses the vastness of the public sphere. Habermas states that the public sphere is a sphere in which private people join together to form a public. Several important concepts, arguments and themes are discussed throughout the article, the chief ones being the distinction between private and public, structural transformation and contemporary politics. One of the main questions that Habermas poses is whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The relationship between the two elements is vigorous and intricate. In his analysis, Habermas traces public and private back to Ancient Greece and then onwards to the Middle Ages, where separation existed, and present day. After the development of the economy and the modern state, public and private adopted their present form. The term public refers to public authority of the state, while private refers to the family, society and the economy. Institutions and laws are the elements that differentiate the two from each other. In modern society, there is a loss of discrepancy between public and private. Instead, there is one societal multipart that exists, similar to that of the one that existed in the Middle Ages. Habermas evaluates that the public sphere in its traditional system no longer exists in today's society. The main concept of Habermas' piece is structural transformation. Structural transformation is the progression by which the public sphere moves from being the core of the rational–critical debate to a degraded form of its prior self. Habermas concludes that the transformation occurred due to changes in social, political and economic structures of society. The primary structural change was the division between public and ... • 5. Harry In Micheal Crichton's Sphere In the novel "Sphere by Micheal Crichton, it entails of a psychatrist sent to the underwater site of a "plane crash" where they later find the craft is from the future or a alien power. Once they later inspect the ship more they see that it contains a sphere like object that has the power to manifest the thoughts (or in the crew's case nightmares) of whoever interacted and went inside of it. Although this novel is, of course, a science fiction, it does possess some biological facts. Small details such as the stings of jellyfish venomous stings killing their crew member, a cold water rush having the ability to kill Norman, a series of glasses breaking around Norman once the oxygen was removed from the room, not being ... In the novel the ship was attacked multiple times by a squid were in the movie they only showed one attack. They also removed some fun from the novel too because the reader was allowed to figure the code out but in the movie Harry solved the code all by himself. Even the characters main story points were changed like how Beth was left conscious and only anxious when she set the bomb but in the novel she was unconcious not allowing them to change the time setting. But even though they had many differences they kept some parts similar like they both included the code, destruction of habitats, and forgetting completely about the bomb. This novel gave inspiration for some technology that can be made in the future such a deep submarines which were fiction around the time the novel was written but later were adopted for normal use. This novel presents inventions that i believe will be normalized in thr future such as underwater ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Construction Of The Public Sphere Gerard Hauser critiques Habermas' construction of the public sphere, pointing out many of its weaknesses. Hauser does concede that Habermas' ideas about the public sphere are meant to focus solely on the bourgeois public sphere and not include all public spheres; however, Habermas' critics have approached his model as universal, so it needs to be examined, contextually, as an approach to universally understanding public spheres (47–48). Because Hauser's approach to the public sphere is more dynamic than Habermas', by that I mean that it purposefully engages multiple public spheres– their individual autonomy as well as their influence on other public spheres– differences between the two rationales are presented. Hauser points to six crucial differences, where he feels that Habermas missed the mark at understanding the transformation of the public sphere. Hauser is concerned with how discourse "realistically" happens within the public sphere, whereas, he argues, Habermas' argument is contingent on the existence of "ideal speech" (46). Hauser's first problem with Habermas' theory of the public sphere is that in order for Habermas' ideas to work, they need to be the only public sphere, that is, a universal public sphere. This is not accurate of how discourse functions. Many discourse communities or public spheres function on their own and have influence on each other. To suggest that there is only one public sphere forces others to conform to that one universal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Exploring The Earth The origins and improvement of scientific knowledge can be discovered by investigating children's understanding of the earth. (Panagiotaki, et al, 2006) This report will focus on how children respond to the shape of the Earth, which is an analysis and partly replication of the result of the experiment done by Vosniadou & Brewer in 1992. According to their research, by interpreting everyday experience, children initially believe that the earth is a flat object. Some think that our earth is flat and rectangular while others assume that it is flat and shaped like a disc. Then, during the process of knowledge acquirement, children are exposed to the socially accepted knowledge that the Earth is spherical. Nonetheless, because of the influence ... In another case study, it is reported that age is a crucial foreteller and children aged 10 and above gain a "considerable amount of scientific knowledge of the earth." (Straatemeir et al, 2008) This is due to the fact that when children get older, they will have more scientifically correct knowledge of the earth. Additionally, they also state that age exerts a huge influence on the consistency of children's answers. This is attributed to the fact that the consistency was lower for younger children. (Straatemeier et al, 2008). The more knowledgeable the children are, the more consistent their answers are. Besides, children's understanding of the form of the earth is associated significantly with gender differences. Previous case studies have expressed that boys are better at scientific knowledge, including the understanding of the structure of our earth than girls. Straatemeir (2008) argues that the boys are supposed to have a considerably higher consistency mark as did the girls. (0.60 and 0.18 respectively) In addition to that, it is suggested that males have the wider knowledge of scientific problems. When working in a group, males are likely to be not only more clear–headed but also more confident and informative than their female peers while mentioning scientific matters. Moreover, this finding remains unchanged ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We must study the word of God, so we know how to be obedient to Him, furthermore the word teaches us what God expects from us. When we submit totally to Jesus Christ He gives us strength to bare our cross, also when we submit to God He gives us strength to do His work. Hebrews 13:21 says God will, "Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. A person who has submitted to God, should show these signs. Also, we ought to seek the mind of Jesus Christ so He can instruct us in all spiritual things. • 16. The Public Sphere Within Theatre The Public Sphere within theatre was a concept that was first delineated by philosopher Jurgen Habermas in his book titled The structural transformation of the public sphere, in which he refers to the right that all citizens hold, the right to participate and engage into discussions on public matters of interest and public issues. Habermas writes: "the audience does not constitute a space for spectators and listeners but a space for speakers and addresses who engage in debate." (Habermas in Balme 2012). The Public sphere has now become a space, a stage, for performers, speakers and protesters to have a voice rather than for the preliminary use of entertainment for the audience, spectators and listeners. On reading Christopher B. Balme's The theatrical public sphere, the concept of theatre's role in the Public Sphere is explored. Balme traces the origins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Academic and artistic interest in something is usually a sure sign that matters are unclear, conceptual boundaries are blurred and that old certainties are anything but that. There is also little doubt that the major challenges we face: the media revolution, globalization and migration, climate change, the erosion of public finances and services (to name just a few) – have all in some way a bearing on the public sphere, the realm where issues are debated and where citizens are free to enter and engage in discourse. As the public sphere is primarily a discursive arena located outside and between state bureaucracies on the one hand and economics and business on the other, it occupies a crucial role in the functioning of so–called free societies. The question to be explored here is what role theatre and performance in practice play in this realm and how performance and theatre theory can contribute to the debates." (Balme ... Factors In Air-Breathing Vertebrates In air–breathing vertebrates, the tidal volume of the lungs is the amount of air normally inhaled, while the lung capacity is the maximum amount of air inhaled. In this experiment, a round balloon is utilized to measure both the tidal volume and the lung capacity. Furthermore, students explored possible factors impacting the vital capacity. Students established that body position is one factor that has an impact on vital capacity. In this case, a standing position versus a seated position, provides more room for the expansion of the chest cavity, thus allowing more air to be inhaled, resulting in increased lung capacity. Keywords: vertebrates, tidal volume, lungs, lung capacity, factors, impact, position, expansion Introduction In air–breathing vertebrates, the lungs are "two large organs of respiration located in the chest cavity and responsible for adding oxygen to and removing carbon dioxide from the blood" (Encyclopædia Britannica, 1) The lungs expand and contract with each breath, and the amount of air moving in and out of the lungs can vary. A diagram of the lungs is represented in the appendix Diagram, labeled as Figure 1. To establish the amount of air inhaled, lung capacity needs to be established. Lung capacity can be measured either using a spirometer (Encyclopædia Britannica, 1) or simply by using a round balloon. The amount of air inhaled in a single breath is called the tidal volume. "In the average adult, tidal volume is about 0.5 liters. However, the lungs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The young mother's features are very delicate and fair; her gaze falls lovingly upon the infant who gazes back at her. Both figures are unclothed with minimal space between them. The scale is similar to that of a real mother and baby, but perhaps a little bit smaller. The sculpture is carved from a pure white piece of marble without natural flecks of color or coloring additions. The element of light and shadow helps to make the figures appear very realistic. For instance, gradual, minute depressions made in the sculpture are affected by shadow and suggest anatomical structure beneath the figures' skin. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indeed, using perfectly white marble reflects the innocence and purity possessed by the mother and baby. This quality is also maintained by the texture; there are no impurities or roughness to be found. In addition to reflecting purity, the smooth texture provides the work with an aura of calming softness that helps to highlight the serenity of the scene. As mentioned in the description, the use of line is also very delicate. The artist might have made them sharp and angular, but instead, he used lines that are curved, gradual, and smooth. This contributes to the loving, gentle quality of the artwork. Another way that the artist has achieved a peaceful scene is by limiting the principle of movement. One can imagine the baby wiggling its toes or the young mother slightly readjusting her position, but that is the extent of the movement suggested. As has been described, the harmonious result of the art elements is a pure, peaceful, and tender scene. As a young girl, I remember going to the Springville Museum of Art on a field trip and seeing this work of art. At first, I was a bit shocked due to the mother's lack of clothing; however, I noticed that her nakedness was not portrayed in a disrespectful way. • 24. Music Of Spheres In the poem "Music of Spheres" by Jean Fallain, who was a French author, poet, and corporate lawyer, describes a deeper meaning of the sad story. The setting is on a frozen road under a starry star with three characters are a man, an old can, and the stars. The man is making his way down the frozen road. He does not seem to be cold or any hurry. He carries in his pocket some jingling keys. The action begins with a man who is wandering, lost, or without specific purpose and destination. Then the action is transferred to the can, empty and cold, which is the next leg of this journey. The final leg is a wobbling and then stopping. Follain has successfully used the feeling, the sound, and the moment to reflect and its deeply symbolic meaning of this poem. The words "frozen road" and the "cold emptiness" can capture the picture of the road and the man which was almost the same. At the beginning of the poem "He was walking a frozen road", Fallain has given us the very first side of the story. It is not a normal road at night, but it is "a frozen road". The road freezes, and no one want to walk in that road on the night time. The heart of the man is frozen as the road. Everything is frozen and empty, and he is black of hope. Using garbage scavenged from Gramacho, one of the largest landfills in America, Muniz models trash into images of classical portraits with his own twist. "...I'm trying to step away from the realm of fine arts, I think it's a very exclusive, very restrictive place to be... What I want to be able to do is to change the lives of people with the same materials they deal with every day", Muniz stated in film Wasteland. The film Wasteland, directed by Lucy Walker, tracks the development of Muniz' series of monumental photographic portraits made from trash. The Farnese Atlas is a 2nd–century Roman marble replica of a Hellenistic sculpture of Atlas, a Titan sentenced by Zeus to hold up his burden for eternity, kneeling with the celestial spheres of the sky weighing down heavily on his shoulders. The Farnese Atlas is an enormous sculpture standing at seven feet tall and is currently located at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, in Italy. Although their actual form and matter are different, both the Atlas and The Farnese Atlas are similar in the way that both paintings portray a male character with a serious or stern expression, carrying a large spherical burden or load on their shoulders. Precision And Accuracy Lab Report Determining the Density of a Polystyrene Sphere with Precision and Accuracy Abstract: The objective of the lab is to determine the volumes of the polystyrene spheres with three different measuring tools: Water Displacement, Analytical Scale, and Triple Beam Balance Scale. The experiment is meant to help understand the concept and application of precision and accuracy in experimental measurements. Accuracy is a measure of how closely the results of repeated measurements are to the true value of what is being measured. Precision is the variability in the results from the repeated measurements, and how close the repeated measurements were to one another. In this lab, the method for measuring the volume of the polystyrene spheres is done with the previously stated tools: Water Displacement, Analytical Scale, and Triple Beam Balance Scale. The standard deviation for the entire classes volumes and masses are recorded to determine the densities. Introduction: Accuracy and precision were the major aspects of the lab. Accuracy is how close the average of the measured values are to the actual value. Precision is the closeness of repeated measurements. In the lab, the aim was to get as close as possible with both accuracy and precision when determining the mass and volume of the spheres. The mass was determined by weighing the spheres on the Analytical Scale and Triple Beam Balance Scale. The volume is determined by measuring with a ruler and by water displacement. The standard ... Archimedes Of Syracuse Essay During the classical period of civilization, many technological advancements became uncovered, providing the foundations of a modern society that exists currently. The development of food production, weaponry, architecture, science, and mathematics led to this great progress. People began to possess critical thinking skills that allowed for more complex ideas and concepts. For instance, Ancient Greece created Democracy, China instituted large trading networks, and India developed advanced knowledge of general health. Earth would not possess nearly as many people as it does today without these significant, milestone discoveries. This ability to think innovatively allowed humanity to evolve and progress drastically. Archimedes of Syracuse is one of those individuals responsible for creating and composing concepts that left lasting effects on human civilization with a profound intellect. Born approximately 287 BC in Syracuse located at Sicily, Greece, he possessed an interest in solving situations (Editors). This Greek city– state was originally established by Corinth as a colony until a future uprising changed it to a democratic government. In the end, it would eventually fall under Roman rule. Regardless, his father, Phidias was an astronomer and therefore, surely influenced the young thinker into a life of math and science. • 36. The Human Condition By Hannah Arendt Hannah Arendt's most influential work The Human Condition was published in 1958. It makes distinctions between labor, work and action, between power, violence and strength and between property and wealth. It is surprising that more than 55 years later the originality and novelty of this book is still present. Arendt compels the reader to open their eyes and to look at the world and human affairs in new ways and with a completely different perspective. In her prologue she professes that she wants us to do "nothing more than to think what we are doing." The Human Condition is associated with Arendt's work on totalitarianism. The Human Condition and her work on totalitarianism work together to highlight the contemporary human predicament. Arendt's interest in human affairs was due to her encounter with Nazis which led to her interest and participation in political activities. Hannah Arendt developed her philosophy of education during her time in the United States. Her philosophy is shaped by the political turmoil that played out in public schools at that time. Arendt was influenced by many philosophers. "One sees Jasper's influence in The Human Condition in which Arendt developed this idea of action: public, political behavior based on communication" (Snelgrove, 4). Hannah Arendt was struck by Cal Marx's picture of individuality which was devoted to production and consumption. The Trope Of The Sphere Interestingly, it is via Borges, a well–known master in the creation of literary labyrinths, that we are able to find several possible explanations for these inner circularities, for instance, through his recurrent references to the trope of the sphere. Take some of the short fictions that constitute his 1941 volume The Garden of Forking Paths, namely 'Lottery in Babylon' and 'The Library of Babel'. Not only does Borges tell us that the Babylonians 'obey the dictates of chance, surrender their lives, their hopes, their nameless terror to it, but it never occurs to them to delve into its labyrinthine laws or the revolving spheres that manifest its workings' (Borges 1998: 104; emphasis added), but also his Library of Babel 'is a sphere whose exact center is any hexagon and whose circumference is unattainable' (113). Moreover, the trope of the sphere 'whose center is everywhere and its circumference nowhere' would be later analysed by Borges in an essay titled 'Pascal's Sphere' [1951]. In it, the significance of the sphere as a double paradox of time/infinity and of unity/multiplicity becomes clearer, by means of a line that he draws from Xenophanes of Colophon to Pascal in order to ... Many types of work fall under the umbrella of domestic labor, such as: cooking, cleaning, mending, child care, running errands, managing the household, and much more. This type of work is highly undervalued and often ignored. Many of the works that we have looked at in this section highlight how many women felt about the domestic sphere that they were placed in. In this essay I will discuss this point using points from "The Yellow Wallpaper" and "Professions For Women". Both women commented on the domestic sphere for women and what that meant for them. The Yellow Wallpaper highlights the "separate spheres" ideaology, an ideaology that states that men and women belong in different spheres of society. A woman 's place in in the home, where she can carry out her duties as a wife and mother in private while a man 's sphere is the one of the public domain. • 42. The Public Sphere By Nancy Fraser Nancy Fraser's article speaks as both critical analysis and a modern day interpretation Jürgen Habermas' concept of the public sphere. Through the application of a revisionist historical lens, Fraser both highlights the limits of the original concept of a single public sphere, and introduces interpretations of it as applied to modern day social issues. Through these critiques, Fraser is successful in forwarding the theory of the public sphere as an indispensible element to the application of critical theory. Drawing on examples in late capitalist societies, Fraser illustrates an alternate proposal of co–existing multiple public spheres as a more accurate representation of this theory in practice. Fraser informs the reader that Habermas' concept of the public sphere served as a regulating force in the promotion of both democracy, and as a guideline for separation between public and private areas. This sphere was comprised of politically minded and motivated individuals existing outside of the realms of government, business and association; with a mandate for debate of matters of public or common interest; excluding those interests deemed private. Its intention was to serve as arbitrators between the public and the state. (58) Critics and revisionist historians however state Habermas' account was an idealized version unrepresentative of the public it claimed to speak for. Fraser contends the logic of the single public sphere's guiding principles, going so far as suggesting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Aristotle 's Theory Of Falling My thesis is twofold: Aristotle's empirical arguments supporting the view that the earth is a sphere are not convincing ; however, his hybrid argument combining a priori and empirical claims based on his theory of falling succeeds in displacing Pre–Socratic Cosmology and empirically grounding the creation cosmology of Plato's Timaeus. Aristotle inherited a tradition of cosmologies espoused by the Presocratics beginning with Thales, "The Earth floats on water, which is in some way the source of all things" (Kirk B13) . The tradition continues with Anaximenes, "The earth is flat and rides on air" (B13) and reaches a zenith with Parmenides, "...there is a furthest limit, it is perfected, like the bulk of a ball well–rounded on every side, equally balanced in every direction from the center" (Fr. 8 32–49). These three quotes identify two themes that Aristotle would face while developing his cosmogony: how does the earth maintain its place in the universe and what is its shape. Aristotle also labored under the imposing shadow of his teacher Plato who developed his cosmology in the Timaeus, "...he should fashion the world as a single whole... And he gave it a shape appropriate to the kind of thing it was... Hence he gave it a round shape, the form of a sphere..." (Timaeus 33a–b). Plato identifies the correct shape of the earth but he does not argue for this conclusion. Aristotle will have to ground this idea in empirical science not myth. • 46. The Flight Path From Singapore 3.2 The Haversine formula The haversine formula is an important equation in navigation, calculating the haversine of the central angle between two points on a great circle of a sphere using the latitudes and the longitudes of the two points: sin2 (d2r) = sin2 ( Φ2 – Φ12) + cos (Φ1) cos (Φ2) sin2 ( λ2 – λ12) where Φ1 and Φ2 denote the latitudes of Singapore and Chicago respectively, and λ1 and λ2 denote the longitudes of Singapore and Chicago respectively. We can rearrange the haversine formula to give us the distance d between the two cities. 3.3 The Haversine function In order to show how the haversine formula is derived, we must first understand the function of the haversine. The term haversine appears to have originated from "half a versed sine", or "half a versine". The haversine function is useful as it can calculate the distance of an arc of a great circle. The flight path from Singapore to Chicago is, in fact, an arc of a great circle. The versine function is one of many trigonometric functions that were once popular in fields such as navigation, but now are practically obsolete and are no longer taught in schools. Commonly abbreviated as versin, the versine function is versin (α) = 1 – cos (α) where α is the variable in the function. However, this does not seem very useful in the derivation of the haversine formula. We can manipulate the versine function into a more useful substitution using the half–angle identity sin2 (12α) = [1 – cos (α)] as sin2 (12α) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Mexican–American community supports the subservient female role in society portraying them as docile, reliant and obedient to their male accompaniment. The domestic household utility of Mexican–American woman is symbolized in a variety of household objects including attire that capitulate their gender representation. • 52. Similarities Between Kepler And Kepler 's Platonist... According to the common belief during the Middle Ages, the universe was comprised of many nested celestial spheres, or orbs. According to M.S. Mahoney, an astronomical researcher at Princeton University, Johannes Kepler, in his physics research, regarded "the spheres" as the "geometrical spatial regions containing each planetary orbit rather than physical bodies as in preceding Aristotelian celestial physics". Kepler provided mathematical evidence to this theory, including the fact that the "eccentricity of each planet's elliptical orbit and its major and minor axes defined the lengths of the radii of the inner and outer limits of its celestial sphere and, therefore, its thickness. The role of these geometrical spheres in Kepler's Platonist geometrical cosmology was to determine the sizes and ordering of the five Platonic polyhedral within which the spheres were supposedly spatially embedded" (Mahoney). Although each sphere rotated uniformly, the combination of their separate revolutions prompted the discovery of the appearance of the irregularity in the motions of the sun and the plants as astronomers viewed from the Earth. The notion that the planets were celestial three–dimensional spheres rather than concrete two– dimensional objects contributed to the naming of Pythagoras's theory, known as the Harmony of the Spheres. • 56. Separate Spheres There was no equality between man and woman in the Victorian era. "The patriarchic system was the norm and women usually led a more secluded, private life. Men, on the other hand, possessed all kinds of freedom" ("Gender Roles"). Moreover, "the man was naturally the head of the family and the guardian of family members. He was the protector and the lord. He was strong, brave and hard– working" ("Gender Roles"). The Victorian era was the time in which the roles of men and women were defined more strictly than at any other time in history. The Victorians considered males and females as "Separate Spheres" that met only during meals. According to Hughes, "the ideology of Separate Spheres rested on a definition of the 'natural' characteristics of women and men. Women were considered physically weaker yet morally superior to men, what meant that they were best suited to the domestic sphere" ("Gender roles in the 19th century"). The fact that woman was morally superior to man led to the belief that "her goal was to bear many children and maintain a home that her husband did not have to worry about" (berryofthesea). What is surprising is the fact that even though women were perceived as morally superior, they could neither vote nor sue. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Hughes, "women were assumed to desire marriage because it allowed them to become mothers rather than to pursue sexual or emotional satisfaction" ("Gender roles in the 19th century"). It was a common practice in the Victorian era that young men used the services of prostitutes, while women had to be pure and clean until marriage. Moreover, women "were not even allowed to speak to men unless there was a married woman present as a chaperone" (Hughes). The inequality is also evident in the fact that "women were expected to have sex with only one man, their husband. In Michael Crichton's novel Sphere, Beth does many things that she would not normally do when she is put in certain situations that test her. "'I want to put you under, Norman. Like Harry.' He shook his head. 'It's only for a few hours, Norman,' she said, and then she seemed decide; she moved swiftly toward him, and he saw the syringe in her hand, the glint of the needle, and he twisted away... She had shut off his power, she had shut off his heat, and now she shut off his air. He was trapped" (Crichton 423–433). This says that Beth (with the help of Norman) has to make Harry unconscious, so she uses a syringe to inject the anesthetic into Harry. This means that with Harry unconscious, the manifestations will stop occurring, that is if Harry was thinking up the manifestations. This proves that people will do anything when they are put in a certain situation that tests them because Beth has to artfully use an anesthetic on a colleague by puncturing his shoulder, and only for hope that the manifestations stop occurring and that she does not die. People do things that they normally would not do when they are put in certain situation that test them because Beth turned against her own colleague and used an anesthetic on him to make him unconscious. In certain situations, people do things that they normally would not do. When Beth is in the presence of the power of the Sphere she accuses Norman of having the Sphere's power because the manifestations are still occurring. "'Beth, this is crazy. Someone is still making these manifestations. Who is doing that, Beth?' She smiled slowly a lazy, cat smile, as if he secretly amused her. 'Don't you really know?' He did know. Yes, he thought. He knew, and it chilled him. 'You're making these manifestations, Beth.' 'No Norman,' she said, still calm. 'I'm not doing it. You are'" (Crichton 417). • 60. Difference Between Round And Square Donuts Comparing the volumes of a round and square donut. Which of these two donuts better fits in a dozen box? Christina Tannous Supervisor: Mr. Omar Rachmani January 25, 2015 Everybody loves to have a donut every once in a while. It's a tasty desert that nobody can deny; children all the way to adults love it. I am personally a huge donut lover! When I usually walk through the mall I find different coffee shops selling square donuts, and not only round ones. This is what sparked the idea in my head that there is a chance that the square donut can be economical where it is a win–win chance for both producers and consumers. I do want to prove that producing and purchasing a different form of donuts is more economically beneficial for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While if the producers were to depend on producing round donuts, the donut box would not be completely filled at the corners, leaving empty spaces at the corner and between two consecutive donuts. The percentage increase in the amount of donut found per donut suggests as well that it is better for the producers to make square donuts, which in this case benefits the consumer as well. One thing that must be taken into consideration when finding the volume of a square donut is that the corners of this donut are not perfectly edged, which means that even though it fits into a rectangular box better than a round donut, there are still very minimal empty spaces that are not covered. Overall, my aim in this experiment is to prove how it will be efficient to produce a square donut and depend on it, because it will be a new trend that everyone wants to try, there will be more dough per donut, price change wouldn't be higher than that of a round donut since the diameter of the circle and the length of the side of the square donut are the ... • 65. The Sphere Of Women In The Anebellum Era In the antebellum era of America, which is the time before America's civil war, there was a call for justice and liberty. The American Revolution had ended a few years ago, the new Constitution was in place, and arguments about slavery began. Abolitionists were demanding that slaves be freed while most of the American population could not decide what to do or said no. This sparked another argument and fight, women's rights. Religious reasons were being tossed back and forth between the fight of elevating a woman's status or keeping her where she is. Women of this time wanted to elevate their status, or change their sphere, from being domestic, pretty, obedient women to being equal as man. Historians though have different thoughts about the sphere of women. By evaluating secondary sources and primary sources during and about this time, I can conclude that women did want to change their sphere and that depending who the woman was determined what sphere she may be in. Catherine Clinton is a historian who wrote "The Ties that Bind" which is about the sphere women were in in the antebellum era. She proposed that the nineteenth century "ushered in a social as well as an economic revolution for American women." Catherine focuses on the middle class women of this time and how their spheres impacted them. She believes that due to these spheres women wanted to rise up and elevate her status to being equal to men. Women of this time had no way of changing laws or standards due to the ... They are looking out for the immature Christians, and taking them "under their wing" to encourage, listen to, and strengthen them to maturity in Christ. The four spheres of relationships are as follows; the relationship with God, the relationship with family or home, relationship with church and believers, and the relationship with the world. The most important sphere is the relationship with God. This sphere or the relationship with God needs to be vibrant, fresh, and personal. All of the other spheres will work or be in line when our relationship with God is in line. The sphere dealing with the home can be taxing at times. The relationship here is much easier when everyone in the home are Christians. However, if dad is a Christian and mom is not, or vice versa, or perhaps a child or children surrender their lives to the calling of Jesus, and mom and dad have not, family relationships and harmony in the home can become much more difficult. Navy has discovered a mysterious, glowing sphere. Although the movie was very interesting, a lot of scientific facts, it was just too long and there were parts of the film where I found myself yawning. I give the movie a thumb up for being the movie my teacher chose to show the class. Although the movie was directed by Barry Levinson and starred Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. According to the Goodman report a biochemist is needed to assess the physiology of the unknown life form. A mathematician is needed because math would be the common language. An astrophysicist is needed to locate the place in the cosmos. This elite team will be staying in a habitat 1000 feet beneath the ocean. The habitat is handled by two navy personal. The contact team finds a large sphere in the spacecraft that reflects everything but humans. According to Ted if they were to put a micrometer around the sphere it would be perfect to the millionth of an inch. Then when the crew loses contact with the surface because of a storm overhead the team is forced to stay in the habitat. When a few crew members are killed the crew is forced to find out the mysteries of the sphere while dealing with distrust between each other. The movie contained some good scientific information. It mentioned the concept of the black hole, a collapsed dead star that has so much gravity it acts like a huge vacuum cleaner sucking everything (dust, light, and time). It also demonstrated that a liquid hydrogen bomb would send a shock wave under water and after the shockwave passes everything would be pulled back in toward the source. ... The team underwater including Norman Johnson, are all mathematicians, scientist and psychologists. The team was sent down by the navy to uncover the secrets of the spacecraft found there. At first it is believed to be an unknown life form, but from the insides it looks like the "things" that lived there were human. The doorways, chairs, food, and architecture seemed to be somewhat human. Inside the ship, is what startled the crew. Inside the cockpit held by a grabbing claw was a metallic sphere. Norman was fiddling with it and discovered he had made a mistake on the name, and that it was Harry, not Jerry. • 76. A Sphere Poem In his 2006 collection, 'District and Circle', Seamus Heaney responds to the ever–changing and developing world around him. To do so he often relies upon the exploration of the past, memory, and personal identity through the use of language. In the second poem of 'District and Circle', 'A Shiver', Seamus Heaney is dependent upon these concepts to construct a thematically rich poem. Heaney's 'A Shiver' utilises language to explore the themes of the past, memory, and personal identity. The Petrarchan sonnet describes the action of wielding a tool: the energy that is associated with it, as well as an understanding of the destructive power that it wields: "the way you had to stand to swing the sledge". By using a Petrarchan sonnet Heaney introduces the concept of the past within his poetry, due to the historical context of the Renaissance style of writing. The description of the tool, in past tense and therefore illuminating Heaney's fascination of the past, ultimately leads to a metaphor in regards to what occurs when strength, and therefore power, falls into the wrong hands. The tool that is used within 'A Shiver' to demonstrate this power is a sledgehammer – most commonly used by labourers as a way to demolish material items – and it is implied that Heaney himself has operated the sledgehammer and is, almost, frightened by its power. This can then be contributed to the overall metaphor of misused power. This metaphor also demonstrates Heaney's personal narrative voice within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. The Structural Transformation Of The Public Sphere... Literature Review Jurgen Habermas can be seen as one of the founders of the term and details the idea of refeudalization in their novel "The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere" in which he writes how the bourgeois public sphere eroded because of economic and structural changes. The boundaries between state and society blurred, leading to "a kind of refeudalization of society." (Habermas, 1989). Essentially state and society became involved in each other's spheres and large non–governmental organizations replaced the old institutions of the public sphere. Furthermore, where the public sphere takes on a feudal aspect is the process of politicians and organizations representing themselves before the voters. (Habermas, 1989). These ideas are then further explained in more contemporary contexts by Alain Supiot writing that primarily of the refeudalization of law but also "ignorance of the organization of powers underpinning the government by laws is taking us back to government by men, that is, to feudal ways of hybridizing the public and the private." (Supiot, 2013). Then further clarifying that Western feudalism today is the dependency between people "having a legal character" where there are status differences and the dependent party may be granted possession, but it is "burdened by the obligations to the benefit of the grantor." (Supiot, 2013). Supiot does however put forward the idea that refeudalization of law does not mean a return to the middle ages but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
