Analysis of Joan Didion’s Essay, On Going Home
While reading Joan Didion's essay "On Going Home" one may be reminded of a sense of home and
family. In this essay Didion recreates the feeling one gets when one visits a place from the past or
while reminiscing about fond memories. This memory is marked by the reflective thought about the
ability to be able to pass this same sense on to another. Didion's "On Going Home" is like a flood of
warm memories leaving you with a single reflective thought.
The way she uses description in this essay and the flow of events is very similar to the way that
memories rush in when one returns to a familiar place from one's past. To someone that may not of
experienced this phenomena the details described may seem to be disconnected and random. ...

Each detail is seemingly distinct yet each shares the same sense of family and of personal history.
Readers who share this same sense of home may be touched be the way Didion connects with them
through her use of description. While she does not directly relate her point to the audience it is
clearly present. Each element in the essay highlights not only the sense of family that is there but
how they influence a person's perspective and attitude. While one shares in her journey through her
past and her visits with her family it brings to mind how one may or may not have this same sense
of family to pass on to their family or even have it themselves. This point is summoned in the
closing paragraph when Didion herself reflects on this thought.
The flow of this narrative may seem jumpy or disconnected and illogical to some but to others who
share a similar perspective the details seem like a flood of memories. Every detail and element is
timeless and independent of the others while at the same time holding a deeper connection shared
with all of the others. Each detail holds a value that isn't noticed at first by others just like each of
the items she mentions holds a value to her and her family but is lost on her husband who doesn't
share the same sense of home with her.
Didion well highlighted the issue that she felt about not

Personal Narrative: A Decision That Changed My Life
I never knew that one action or decision could change you life for ever but on Friday, May 28th
2016 I experienced first hand by jumping into a shallow pool and tore my PCL.
Maddie Emma and I had arrived to Maddie's house excited but I felt a pit in my stomach but i just

whole body as if my brain was screaming at me not to get in but like every other decision in my life
I chose to ignore it and slid into the pool. Emma had jumped in and wanted to show Maddie how to

Joan Didion's On Going Home By Joan Didion
What does the word home mean? In the essay "On Going Home" by Didion she recreates her
feelings and thoughts about her meaning of home. Family is a big part of one's life and important
one at that and Didion uses it as the center of her work. The work itself is about re– defining what
home truly is. Home to many people is where you live but to Didion it was where her family was.
The story starts out as an innocent retelling of how it is her daughter's first birthday and how she is
celebrating it with her family down in Central Valley California. Yet as the essay goes on it starts to
become a blast to the past into Didion's childhood. She describes the family she has made and the
family she came from and how there is a distinct difference ... Show more content on

I decide to meet it head–on and clean out a drawer..." (Didion 140). "...structural reversal,
positioning the main clause at the end of the sentence. This allows her to emphasize the word
"paralyzed," which aptly describes how Didion feels when considering both of her home–lives"
(troykelleher3). This quote gives off the idea that she is scared to draw her attention to the past and
take it apart, but she barely now gained the backbone to face her past. Dust is constantly talked
about in the essay probably suggesting she can't move on in her life. When dust starts to collect it
usually means someone doesn't have the time to clean it up or they don't care. Didion's inability to
clean up one drawer just shows that she is struggling. Didion's "home" doesn't have the feeling of
safety because of this quote "I come to dread my husband's evening call...suggests uneasily that I get
out and drive to San Francisco or Berkeley" (Didion 141). This gives the perception that she is most
likely cold inside because she doesn't have somewhere she feels absolutely comfortable. The work
"On Going Home" is Didion's point of view of what home ultimately is by using her own personal
experiences. "The essay describes her struggle to connect her current home life with her prior home
life, which are vastly different" (troykelleher3). She starts off her essay by stating this "By "home" I
do not mean the house in Los Angles where my husband and I and the baby live, but the place where

Joan Didion On Going Home
In Joan Didion's essay "On Going Home", which is written in first person, the essay totally consists
of Didion's memories to reveal her complex emotions and thoughts, and demonstrates her personal
reflection to show how her memories influence her idea of the meaning of contrasting with her past
and present. Through the essay that based on her experiences, Didion indicates losing of the
memories of family is the same meaning of losing the "home" in the circumstance when diminished
value of family life from generation to generation by using the contrast, anecdotes, and personal
reflection to allow readers think of her idea more deeply and intensively. By using the subject matter

Through the contrast her two families, she shows troublesome problems of family relationship that
has been around a long time commonly. She describes disposition of family relationship by using
the contrast with detailed description make reader comprehend the situation she is in. Using her
brother representatively for her family shows that her husband and her family do not understand
each other by using the contrast such as, "My brother does not understand my husband's inability to
perceive ... and my husband in turn does not understand why so many of the people ... on drunk–
driving charges" (51–52). In this sentence, she shows to readers at what points they do not
understand each other, and through this sentence by using the contrast, readers can easily and
exactly understand how the two families are different. It is greatly helpful to readers comprehend
Didion's awkward situation between her two families and the disconnected of

Going To Nursing Home
For most people, going to the nursing home would not be considered a fun after school activity, but
to the members of one of Athens High School's newest organizations, Health Occupations Students
of America, we look forward to it. When we go to the nursing home, we help to encourage the
patients in any way we can. We like to give patients advice on their health. Patience is key to a
successful visit with a patient. For example, a lady who has Alzheimer's does not like to take her
medication. I encouraged her to take her medicine because it is essential for her health. You only
need a few minutes to sit with a patient and give them advice. This motivates people to reach their
goals. Ask them what are they trying to achieve. Let them know

Essay on American Women Leaving the Home and Going to Work
One of the most significant sociological changes in the nation's history began in the last decade of
the nineteenth century and the ramifications are still being felt today. This change consisted of the
large numbers of women who entered the work force. This dramatic change in American society
was accompanied by a great deal of controversy and prejudice directed towards women. It was
predicted that female employment would bring about the downfall of society and the change of the
American family.
While a large portion of the public was appalled by the thought of independent young working
women, they were also fascinated. Therefore, the attitudes of the public toward these women can be
seen in the literature that was produced at that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, the prejudice against female workers essentially allowed their employers at the
various factories to blame the women themselves for their low wages. The standard argument was
that these women did not "need" to work. Part of this concept was that these women were supported
by fathers, brothers, etc. and only wanted the jobs so they would have money for nice clothes and
"extras". Despite numerous government statistics that demonstrated financial need by many female
workers, the prevailing attitude was that women brought their low earnings on themselves (Kessler–
Harris 100).
This, of course, totally ignored the government statistics that pertained to immigrant families and
minorities, where family finances were the prime motivating factor towards women joining the work
force (Kessler–Harris 123). Additionally, the census figures that showed immigrant wives as not
working failed to take into consideration that these women were usually employed as their
husband's assistants (Anonymous 25; Kessler–Harris 124).
Those knowledgeable about working conditions within New York's factories found the facts to be
far different from this scenario. While some women lived at home, many did not. At a weekly wage
of eight to ten dollars per week, these women generally paid five to six of that for their rooms
(Barnum 7). Women who

The Importance Of My Senior Year Of High School
When thinking about my senior year of high school I start to think about a tradition that happened
every year with the senior class. It seems wired but the senior class always seemed to be up to
something every week. I remember thinking my Jr year the my senior class was gonna change how
people viewed us. I was so right.
You see every year before are home football game against Creighton Prep. Our schools for years
would be fighting back and forth. It got to the point where every year the week of the big game the
boys at Prep would walk into Westside and either are pools or our courage rock would be covered in
blue paint. I remember my senior year was the year that everything changed. We where tired of prep
always picking on us and Westside students where not allowed to retaliate. If we where caught doing
so we wouldn't be able to walk to the stage come graduation day.
Picture this. It was Thursday night around 8:30pm the setting was a high school football field. All
the lights where one and there where about 500 students on the field. The student had tents put up.
Some people just brought sleeping bags. You can see the football players throwing a football back a
forth. There where about 25 teacher that where there also just walking around and hanging out with
the students. There was the wrestling team and baseball boy protecting the entrances along with
some of the male teachers. It was a sight to see just knowing that us students where not going to do
anything. Only

John heard gunshots so he ran down stairs and John saw his grandparents lying on the ground.
"Grandma, grandpa!" he call 911. "This is an emergency come quickly, as quick as you can please!"
He was really angry at what happened, that he couldn't wait for the police so he ran off to the city
and When he ran he saw a guy walking into a house with a gun and John yelled "stop there don't

The guy that killed his grandparents ran into the house, John ran in too without thinking. "Didn't I

Marketing And Buying A Home

which can create delays in listing and selling your home. If this is your first experience, your own
resources may be limited to getting the house on the market, priced correctly to attract buyers and
finally completing all the paperwork for the closing transaction.
Depending on how well you understand the process, you may want to consider the seller program

Modesto realtors understand the market and they know how to present your property for sale to the
potential buyer. They are in a better position with access to qualified buyers, market data and insider
information that rarely is reported in the property comps.
3. Can you sell like Modesto realtors?
Selling a home happens in multiple steps and each phase needs to complete the process before
moving on to the next. As FSBO, you have to compile the findings of the market, preform an
assessment of your home according the market's profile before you can even list the home. Granted
it may only take a few days to do the first few steps by hiring a lawyer. The next steps for marketing,
staging and showing the home will need to be executed smoothly for the sale to close completely on
schedule.
Modesto realtors are one step ahead of you and they are your competition. They are well–informed
on the existing real estate market and know what's happening in your neighborhood to prevent any
mishaps that may affect deals currently in process. Sometimes the changes are simple to fix and
other times they can halt the sale sending the buyer to purchase another home on the market.

A Short Story : A Story?
Every step is heavy, as we reached the base of the hill, where a super steep incline awaits. We
conquer it every year though each time, it feels less victorious. My brother took the lead, grabbing
onto a thick plant to haul himself up. Going next, I grab the same vine, though it breaks, dropping
me on the clotted earth. My legs become stuck with dirt, my sweat acting like an adhesive. Like the
lovely person he is, Gabriel looked down and laughed, before giving me a hand and helping me up
and over the incline, as displaced dust trickles down. To break the quiet I turn my embarrassment
into his, making fun of his new girlfriend. "Why Bebe?" I quip, "Stella is so much prettier and
smarter. And she's actually your age." Glaring at me, he hisses "Can you not. " With this, a
realization hit me: their budding romance had ended. And so soon! "Did you guys break up?" I ask,
followed quickly by, "Now you can profess your love to Stella!," before running ahead to avoid his
furious gaze and swinging arms. His now ex–girlfriend, he didn't even tell me about, instead, I
found out through a post on Instagram, which I soon found out had been deleted. We soon entered
the shaded area of our hike; the entrance looked like something straight out of Beauty and the Beast,
covered by tangled vines and thorns. In Provence, everything grows abundantly, from these thorny

Be Careful Going Home, The Roads Are Slippy Essay
"Be careful going home. The roads are slippy." That phrase makes me cringe. Western
Pennsylvanians are known for their interesting colloquialisms and I can't stand most of them.
Colloquialisms are words or phrases that aren't formal or even literary and are spoken in common
conversation, according to Oxford Dictionaries. The correct word is slippery and not this strange
word pronounced slippy. Other ones like yinz, dippy egg, pop, gob, red up, hoagie, and buggy are
common words around here and I believe it makes the people saying them sound like hicks. I've
grown up in this area, surrounded by these words, yet I feel each one is worse than the next. This
wasn't always the case though. When I was younger, my family said a few of the colloquialisms
from this area since they've lived here their whole lives. My mother was from Latrobe and my father
was from Johnstown. We lived in a small, extremely rural area between Johnstown and Altoona
where you could always smell natural fertilizer and you lived a fair distance from your neighbors.
So, by the time I entered school, I had heard a few of them like gob, dippy egg, and sweeper. School
was where I learned more phrases and started using them. I would say buggy instead of shopping
cart, crick instead of creek, and even slippy that I now loathe. During my freshman year of high
school, the drama club went on a trip to New York City and everyone there could tell exactly where
we were from. This made me rethink what I was saying and

Delegating Application Essay
Delegating is a personality trait that comes in handy when cooperating with others. Consequently,
by holding this trait, it is clear to understand that a few tasks require additional opinions than just
one in order to be executed. In addition, it is also used while problem solving, at times when it is
required to be open minded with everyone's points of views. As I grow up, I aspire to maintain the
characteristic of being a delegator, as well as maintain a balance throughout the responsibilities that
I take. On the other hand, there are a variety of people prefer to not keep their tasks organized,
working with these people can be almost impossible to succeed with, and can lead to calamities.
This assignment was possibly my most difficult to complete, not due to the task itself, but by cause

Joan Didion's On Going Home
The work "On Going Home" work is the honesty in re–defining what a home truly is. A home is
known to be the place where an individual grew up or is growing up. Joan Didion redefines the
word as "...the place where family is...filled with mementos" (1). Home isn't the place you live, it's
the place you love. A major part of Didion's love for her home is how it ties her to the past,
particularly her childhood. Leaving her home was like leaving her childhood memories behind, as
she explains that she "was almost thirty years old before [she] could talk to [her] family on the
telephone without crying after [she] had hung up" (1). For example, Didion calls marriage a
"betrayal" and describes family–life as an ambush. She feels at fault because ... Show more content

Given the sad tone of the story, there seems to be some emotionally tragic event that has affected her
deeply and has made her uneasy when returning to her original home. Sad events that include
mental hospitals, graveyards, and rejection surrounds her life and affects the way that she presents
herself and the things she converses about with other people. I was able to make this assumption
when she states, "Paralyzed by the neurotic lassitude engendered by meeting one's past at every turn,
around every corner, inside every cupboard...I decide to meet i head–on and clean out a drawer."
This line gives off the idea that she is scared to look back, face, and analyze her past, but she has
only now gained the strength to face her past. Her "home" and the fact that she doesn't have the
feeling of warmth and safety in her home has affected her personality so much to the point that she
starts to remind her aunts of their children who have died. I think that this reflects the idea that she is
probably dead inside because she doesn't have a place where she feels completely comfortable in.
The dust references throughout the story all suggest she isn't able to move on. Normally dust starts
to collect on furniture when someone doesn't have the care to clean it up and I think that is the same
for Joan and her inability to clean up a simple drawer in her bedroom filled with things of the

The Necklace "Wake up for school honey!" I heard my mom waking me up at the usual 6:00 am.
Birds were chirping outside and the sun was minutes away from rising. I got up to get ready for
school. I banged my leg on the side of my bed on my way to the bathroom. It made a mark on my
leg from how hard I hit it. I got to school early and sat alone in the cafeteria. Everyone walked in
happy with their friends talking about their weekends. While I was just reading some book about
some ancient kung fu warrior. The book wasn't bad but the thing was that in my community I'm the
worst fighter ever. I always wanted to improve my fighting skills but I just couldn't. It was like
everyone was just so much more better than me that I couldn't ever win a kung fu fight. The bell
rang to go to class and on my way upstairs I bumped into one of the best kung fu fighters in my

tone. I just stayed shut and watched him and his friends laugh at me. This kind of stuff makes me

On Going Home By Kerstin Bratsch Analysis
In Kerstin Bratsch's painting "Unstable Talismanic Renderings–27" there is an array of talismans of
varied size, shapes and colors depicted on one canvas. The painting can be viewed as symbolic of
the human mind. Additionally, the diversity, confusion, energy and activity draw an analogy to the
dynamics of the powerhouse, the mind, whereas the absence of cohesion and clarity reflects the
transient nature of our thoughts and the fluctuating shades of our emotions. There is constant
activity in our brain and this vigor shapes the window through which we look at this world. Joan
Didion's essay "On Going Home" sheds insight onto the dynamic human mind through the paradigm
shift Didion experiences on visiting her childhood home for her daughter's first birthday.
As one leaf withers and falls from the tree, a new one grows in its place and the tree is complete
again. However, Didion's tree is still incomplete as the new leaf, the 'house' she shares with her
husband and daughter in Los Angeles, is loosely attached to her tree and hasn't replaced the former
leaf, her childhood home in Central Valley of California. This "troublesome distinction" between her
old and new home disturbs Didion deeply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This instability was also highlighted in Mark Twain's essay "A River Pilot Looks at the Mississippi"
when "all the grace, the beauty, the poetry" was no longer evident to Twain and all he could see was

In its early years, GEICO was a small company that specialized in selling insurance to a small slice
of the American public. Its founder, Leo Goodwin, had first worked at USAA, a company that sold
insurance to military officers and whose corporate leadership was dominated by former senior
military officers. As a non–military person, Goodwin saw that his opportunities for advancement
into upper management at USAA were limited and he struck out on his own in 1936. His new
company would sell insurance to a different niche market, federal government employees, and its

The organization known as AARP was originally the American Association of Retired People but
has dropped the full name for the less specific initials, an oft used strategy by groups or corporations
that are trying to broaden their markets, their customer base, or their appeal. How many of us
remember what the initials IBM, PPG, or SAS once meant? AARP has long sought to include all
people aged 50 or more, regardless of their employment status. Given the size of the baby–boom
cohort AARP has a large pool of potential members and readers of their magazine, which until 2002
was known as Modern Maturity. Images promted by that name, like those caused by the former full
association name probably cried out for something that sounded less, well, fogey–ish. The magazine
publishes three versions for different age groups: "50–59, 60–69 and 70–plus" and while "those
versions are not ad versions, they're editorially versioned" with different articles, the ads can be
targeted to the different versions (Vasquez).

Joan Didion's on Going Home- Analysis Essay
In Joan Didion's essay, "On Going Home" Didion describes her experiences and thoughts on what
defines her meaning of home. Didion uses many asyndetons and polysyndetons to emphasize her
emotions and poses several rhetorical questions. Throughout the essay, Didion poses an important
point that, perhaps her generation is the last to truly know the meaning behind the word "home". The
contributing factors to such conclusion derived from her personal experiences with her direct family
(mother, father, and brother), her husband, and even her own daughter. Didion first sets her
definition of home by clarifying that to her, home means "not where [her] husband and [she] and the
baby live, but the place where [her] family is." (Didion1) Her ... Show more content on

Joan Didion's On Going Home
On Going Home The text "On Going Home" by Joan Didion is a personal narrative about her
personal family and home life. She has identified in the text that it is the 1960's, and she resides in
Los Angeles with her husband. There is conflict when she deals with family, Didion states that her
husband is different from her family in various ways; once she returns home she absorbs her
families quirks and personalities (Didion, 164). The author seems as if she cannot mesh her old
family life and her new family life, and is falling in to apathetic depression. She feels like they only
carry out the traditional family interactions because of their generation (165). She infers that the
younger generation is naive to a splintering family, that they can ... Show more content on

When she told her husband she was leaving for Berkeley or San Fransisco, she always went to her
family graveyard. Didion deeply wants to make her family happy, and will go to lengths of agreeing
with false information to keep them content. She openly agrees with aunts when they ask if she is
happy living in New York City, when she resides in Los Angeles. The piece suggest that her family
did not approve of her husband, and they have had issues with her since the marriage. She
comments on her brother not using her husbands name, only referring to him as "Joan's husband,"
even when he is present. The stress has taken a toll on her mental health, and she is only currently
starting to recover. Didion comments that she has strong ties with her mother, and she is spending
time with her father. When she looks through old pictures of her grandfather she states that she does
and does not see her face in the photograph of him (166). Saying this can be interpreted on various
levels; Didion could mean that they share a resemblance, but they have intensely conflicting ideals.
When she states this, the reader captures a glance of her internal struggle with her family. This
internal struggle is supported when she said she cried after every phone call with her family until
she was thirty; the phone calls had no points of contention or arguments, she

Descriptive Essay Day
Willow was excited to go to the beach with Evelyn. They were going to have a fun time there. The
day was sunny and hot. The water was going to be cool against their hot skin. There were some
clouds in the sky and a slight breeze. Evelyn parked her car and they both got out. When they got to
the end of the cement stairs, Willow started to run to a shady spot in a secluded part of the beach.
Evelyn started running to try to catch up. When they both got to the shade, Willow threw down her
t–shirt, shorts, and towel onto the sand. Then she took off her sandals and set them near her towel.
Evelyn put her towel down then laid her shorts, shirt, and shoes on top of it. "I've been wanting to
swim for a few weeks. I'm so glad that we chose to go today. It's a perfect day for it." Evelyn said in
an excited voice. "I know. I haven't been able to come to the beach since last summer. Let's go enjoy
that ocean!" said Willow. They started to jog towards the water with joy. They could feel the hot
sand burning their feet. It felt horrible but good at the same time. Willow started to walk onto the
wet sand then into the water. The water felt cool against her burnt feet. She was thrilled to have a
beach day. Willow was going to enjoy every second of it. Evelyn ran into the water with pure joy.

On Going Home By Joan Didion
In her essay "On Going Home," author Joan Didion speaks to new parents about how the experience
of "going home" after starting a new family can trigger feelings of disconnection between families,
old and new. Written from Didion's own experience returning to her childhood home for her
daughter's first birthday, the essay describes her nostalgia for her previous home and how she regrets
being unable to, as a mother, provide the same familial experiences she had as a child. Using
relatable invention, imagery–inducing arrangement, and syntax that inspires more deliberate reading
by the audience, Didion effectively convinces her readers of the familial fragmentation that occurs
with the creation of a nuclear family.
Didion's use of the first canon of rhetoric, invention, exemplifies her command of the emotional side
of rhetoric. An example is the line, "I have another cup of coffee with my mother. We get along very
well, veterans of a guerilla war we never understood" (Didion par. 3). This line expertly conveys the
combative nature of the relationship a mother has with her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Instead of filling the space between thoughts with conjunctions and connectors, she fills them with
silence. A paragraph continuing the description of her time at home that begins "Days pass. I see no
one" creates a permeating sense of dread that is identified with returning home (par. 4). Another
instance of effective use of similar syntax is the lines "Marriage is the classic betrayal. Or perhaps it
is not any more" (par. 1–2). When Didion makes observations like these but doesn't immediately
offer more explanation, the audience must read with the intent of finding out what is meant, rather
than simply being handed a justification. These short, direct thoughts unembellished by
accompanying explanations create more engaging writing, resulting in a more affected audience that
is more likely to extract Didion's

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Living With Family
Living alone or living with family has its advantages and disadvantages which include the amount
of responsibilities, freedom and financial stability a person has.The majority of young adults for
years dream about the day they finally get to move out of their parents home and start living
independently. Suddenly when it's time to move out and live on their own it becomes overwhelming.
Most teenagers think they are ready to take on the responsibility of living independently but when
reality sets in, they realize that providing for themselves is surprisingly more difficult than living
with their family.
When living with parents a good portion of responsibility a young adult is given are tasks to get
them prepared for early adulthood. This means sharing responsibilities that contribute to the house
such as chores. For example, today they're responsible for washing the dishes, the next day cleaning
the living room and the bathroom. A disadvantage of living with parents would be the amount of
freedom that is given. For example, in most households, there is a set curfew time to be home by,
and the consequences of arriving late past the curfew time would be getting grounded, no internet
for two days, or getting that favorite play system taken away. There is no talking on the phone past
certain hours, not being allowed to go to that concert that's been on their to–do list because mom and
dad would rather have them stay home. Although their freedom is limited, for the most part,

Who Is Joan Didion On Going Home
Home is more than just a place to most people, it is a different set of values and behaviors. Joan
Didion, in her personal essay "On Going Home," reflects on the difficulty of combining one's adult
life with one's values and experiences from the place one comes from, the troubles of being home.
In contrast, the article in Quartz by Corinne Purtill raises awareness for those who are refugees, who
had to abandon their homes, and for Better Shelter, a company trying to "give a more dignified
home for displaced people." Despite the differences in aforementioned purposes, the texts share a
subject of the struggle to find that place one can call home and feel secure in. Although these two
texts are linked in terms of subject matter, they differ in terms of their varying purposes, context,
and syntactical and stylistic features. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By choosing to write the piece as a personal essay, Didion can use anecdote as evidence for her
argument. One example of this is when she writes "my husband likes my family but is uneasy in
their house, because once there I fall into their ways, which are... not my husband's ways." This use
of personal experience adds to her ethos and credibility with the reader as it assures them that she
has firsthand knowledge of her subject. Furthermore, her use of first person pronouns makes her
more personable and trustworthy to the

Pak Muhamad Sukma's Going Home
According to Pak Muhamad Sukma, the author of " Going Home" believes that education is more
than having a high paying job. It is taking the knowledge you have acquired and trying to make a
change out of it. Sukma used to think that education is the training needed to get a high paying job.
Then a protest occurred in his country, this occurrence allowed him to be awaken with new found
knowledge. The protests were about the price increase and an economic crisis, ever since that it has
expanded his relatively simplistic view of the world. Leading him to understand that education can
play a major role in society, even if it has a small difference. I agree with Sukma's statement about

In the 10th grade I saw Spike Lee's biopic of Malcolm X. From that movie, I learned that Malcolm
X was one of the most influential African Americans in history, but he wasn't always like that.
Before he became an American Muslim Minister, he was a lowlife scoundrel. This all changed when
he went to prison and increased his knowledge. He acquired more knowledge, which led him to
understand there are issues that should be fixed. This led Malcolm X to help the population of
African Americans understand that supremacy and racism exist amongst them. Malcolm X believed
that people should be treated equally, and be given equal rights just like their counterparts. This
influenced people to be more aware of their environment and protest on the problems they face.
Eventually, this movement made the government guarantee that African Americans should be given
the most fundamental rights. Similar to the protest that Sukma encountered, it was all for a cause.
This cause was acknowledged because Malcolm X used his education to understand the bias
differences. To a large degree, moreover, the protest allowed people to let go of their differences and
come together to fight a bigger cause. Education allows people to spread their knowledge to others
and allow them to understand the issues they face. This connects to Sukma's idea that knowledge
gives us the ability to take social

Buy Your First Home
Buying your first home is an incredibly exciting experience. It's so exciting that first–time buyers
often jump onto the deep end of the pool without first making sure the pool has water in it. There are
four precautions you must take before signing on the dotted line if you want to be happy with your
home purchase.
Triple Check Your Budget
Crunch the numbers several times and make sure you really can afford the property you're buying.
Make sure you have factored all of your costs into your plan, including closing costs, HOA fees,
homeowner's insurance and property taxes. Verify that you can afford the home (–– removed HTML

promotions, raises or other income sources that you hope to get. Counting your chickens before they

Hidden problems are often expensive problems and may require major repairs. Never assume that
what you see is what you will get when buying a home. Water damage, foundation issues, termite
problems and structural issues are major problems. They may be costly to repair may be severe
enough to render the home uninhabitable until. After the inspection, follow the inspector's advice.
No matter how much you love a property, run away if that is what the inspector advises.
Verify the Details
Most first–time home buyers work with a Realtor rather than going it alone, and this approach is
recommended. If, however, you have an opportunity to buy a home privately, make sure you seek
out professional advice before signing everything. Even if you don't fee the need for a Realtor, have

Analysis Of The Story ' Going Back Home '
As people journey through life, they discover many qualities they hold that make them unique and
interesting. These qualities differentiate them from others, and help form their identity. In the stories
we have read in class, such as "Going Back Home", written by Toyomi Igus and Michele Wood,
"Nei Um Lung, Ma?" by May Yee, and "The Jade Peony" by Wayson Choy, the characters' hobbies,
beliefs, and family roots make them unique and interesting. Due to many factors, including different
experiences in life, an individual develops many aspects in their identity that are different from
others.
Hobbies, which are adopted and changed throughout one's life, express who an individual is. There
are many different reasons as to why people adopt hobbies. It may be a way to pass the time, to
express their likes and dislikes, or a way for them to channel their emotions. In the story "Going
Back Home", the narrator explains how the painter, Michelle Wood, expressed her life and her
ancestors' lives through her art. She created self–portraits to show different aspects of her life, her
grandparents' lives, and a blue musician's life, utilizing the colours, patterns, and objects to depict
their hardships, culture, and opportunities. "The house and fence represent the foundations of my
past. The boards are my life lessons–the crooked ones are the tragedies and the hardships. I am
holding a hen, which is a link to my rural southern heritage." This excerpt from the story explains

Personal Statement : Homework Taught Me
When I was young, I had my own agenda and things I thought were most important in my life. I had
everything in order and I knew exactly what I wanted to do and when to do it. I did, however, have
my daily chores. I had smaller chores like cleaning my room or helping put dishes in the sink
starting around six years old. As I got older my chore list became longer which included washing
dishes, sweeping the floor, feeding our dogs, and general cleaning. I had four siblings in my
household so they were all divided among us. At the time, I did not know how much I was learning
from these duties. The many lessons chores taught me was not necessarily obvious to me until I
became an adult and was living on my own. If you were to ask most children or teenagers how
doing chores and other household work would benefit them they would probably not believe there
was any advantage for their future. As a teenager they may need more motivation or discipline in
order to get them to even attempt their duties.
As I came into adulthood, I found that one of the biggest benefits I gained was my inward drive to
see any project I start to the end; whether it be school work, career, or family. In my later teenage
years, I wanted to get a job as soon as I was legally able. Even though it was a part time job at the
local grocery store, I ensured that I was always on time and performed my duties above standard.
My parents played a large part in teaching me to be dedicated, managing my time and taking

Summary Of On Going Home By Joan Didion
For the first time in 130 years, more young adults are living with parents until their mid thirties. Part
of this could be an emotional attachment keeping them from leaving home because after they leave,
everything will change. However, many are losing their real sense of home and are just using it as a
place where they can avoid paying bills and many other responsibilities. Many young adults now do
not understand the extensive sacrifice it is to leave their one and only home. In "On Going Home,"
Joan Didion expounds on her struggle to connect with her current house, in a nostalgic and resigned
tone, and vivid imagery, symbolism, and comparison Didion expresses the regret she feels every
time she remembers she left her "home". The essay it's based on the time Didion visited her parents'
home to celebrate her daughter's 1 year old birthday. Throughout the visit Didion couldn't help but
feel resentment to leave her "home". Didion stated that she came "to dread my husband's evening
call" because she didn't want to go back to Los Angeles or even be reminded of it (2). Didion wishes
she could stay in her "home" where she is completely happy. We find her desperately looking
around the house for her past "around every corner, inside every cupboard" she "aimlessly" goes
"from room to room" looking for something she once lost and will never get back (2). Didion feels
the need to reconnect with her family and, although not stated, Didion longs to go back in time and

Going To Eat At Home Or Restaurants Essay
People all around the world are busy. Busy with school, work, and other extra activities. People find
that going out to a restaurant would be quicker and more convenient. The fact remains that people
have to eat, whether it be cooking at home or going out. Though cooking at home and eating out are
are completely different ways to eat, they could not be any more different in quality, portion, and
cost. When families eat at home, they know the ingredients that have been added to their meals and
the quality of the food. Moreover, they know the cleanliness of where the food has been prepared.
At home, they know if the person preparing has washed his/her hands. When going out to eat, the
family has no idea what happens in the kitchen. Their food could have been spit on, dropped, or
even possibly a hair from a cook could fall into their dish. The quality of food is important to the
consumer, due to if the food does not taste well, more than likely they will not eat it. Also, the
restaurant serves sometimes less quality than what you buy and less quantity. When going out to eat
at a restaurant, people prefer to recieve their money's worth in the food they order. That typically
comes down to portion sizes. as unhealthy as it is, most people do not know the proper portion and
tend to eat the entire meal that is presented to them. While, at home, when families cook the meal
themselves, the portions are smaller due to the recommended serving size of the meal. Most
restaurants are guilty of serving anywhere from double to triple a normal food portion. Portion
control is an important part in food. That makes it important to understand what a recommended
serving size is for the food prepared is, and only ordering that amount. When families prepare their
meals at home, they are able to control what goes on the plate, and what not to eat. Eating out at
restaurants are typically portioned excessively, and some dishes can contain an entire day's worth of
calories.
It's hard to beat the convenience of going to a restaurant and having cooks prepare and serve the
food is relaxing and eliminates the hassle of having to cook dinner. On the other hand, there are
many great benefits of that cooking at home, such as price. The

On Going Home Joan Didion Analysis
On Going Home was published in Slouching Towards Bethlehem around 1960. Joan Didion's
article, On going home, is a personal narrative about Joan's outlook of what home truly is. In the
article, Joan Didion describes her home and some of the events that occurred to paint a picture of
how her home was and what she considered home for that; while also showing her concerns of her
daughter considering the home she is creating, a good home. An element that catches the reader's
eye throughout Joan Didion's article, On Going Home, is Joan Didion's tone and style; both of
which clearly present her thoughts to the reader. Joan Didion's writing style for On Going Home
includes her using parenthesis to show her thoughts, scattered narration, strong emotive language,
and using fragmented sentences. Along with that, Joan Didion's tone during her writing was sad and
frustrated and her language throughout On Going Home reflected that.
The part that stands out the most with Didion's writing style is how she writes her sentences. Many
of Didion's sentences follow the stream of consciousness or are more of interior monologue. An
example of this is in her statement when she said, "What could that girl possibly make of, say, Long
Day's Journey into Night? Who is beside the point?."(Didion 2) This sentence shows how Didion
would phrase her sentences as if they were just her thoughts. Along with this, Didion also had
scattered narration in her article; which makes her writing seem even more as if it is just her
thoughts as she looks through her childhood home. The scattered narration in Didion's article also
showed her perception of her childhood home in a way. Another technique that Didion used in her
writing was to have sentence fragments. Many of the sentence fragments used in Joan's writing
seemed to paint a better picture for the reader to clearly see what Didion was seeing without using
action verbs which can occasionally take the reader away from imagining what the author was
describing. Along with that, the sentence fragments can also make the reader feel overwhelmed
which could also be how Didion was feeling as she stayed at her childhood home and tried to piece
together her thoughts. Joan also used parenthesis in

Buying a New Home
This paper will address what to consider when buying a new home and what affects like marginal
benefit, marginal cost, strength of the economy, domestic economy, and international trade, can have
on situations and the conditions when making a decision to purchase a home. The principles of
economics can directly relate to the purchase of a house, because you must consider all the possible
affects your decision might have and the principles do a great job at helping you be more analytical
with your decision and your reasoning to buy. When you consider marginal benefit to a home
purchase you will be considering the benefit as a consumer you will have over the housing market
of your choice in the area you live. If there are a lot of homes ... Show more content on

This value of U.S. currency does affect company profits, their budgeting, as well as manufacturing
costs. There are ramifications from a decrease in value of the dollar, examples are; capital
investment, multiple plant openings and closings. Because many companies over time have
outsourced work to foreign companies because the cost to employ people is cheaper, but the dollar
has decrease in value which is returning the factories or call centers back to the U.S. International
trade is very important to our domestic economy as it does decrease the value and power of the
dollar, which will then change our ability to afford things at a respectable price. This is the reason
for consideration when purchasing a home; these factors are necessary to your dream of owning a
home. But when these factors are what they are right now, you can see why many might find a
purchase like a home is out of reach with the decreased value of the dollar and a struggling
economy. If Americans can start doing things a little different, like consuming less and finding ways
to innovate new ideas and more efficient ways to do more, we can then find a solution to these
failures in our economy.
For me at this time in life I see buying a home a good thing and a decision I am ready to commit too.
My reasoning is the location of where I am going to buy. Markets around the nation are very
different in comparison. I plan on

Analysis Of Joan Didion’S Essay, On Going Home

  • 1. Analysis of Joan Didion’s Essay, On Going Home While reading Joan Didion's essay "On Going Home" one may be reminded of a sense of home and family. In this essay Didion recreates the feeling one gets when one visits a place from the past or while reminiscing about fond memories. This memory is marked by the reflective thought about the ability to be able to pass this same sense on to another. Didion's "On Going Home" is like a flood of warm memories leaving you with a single reflective thought. The way she uses description in this essay and the flow of events is very similar to the way that memories rush in when one returns to a familiar place from one's past. To someone that may not of experienced this phenomena the details described may seem to be disconnected and random. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each detail is seemingly distinct yet each shares the same sense of family and of personal history. Readers who share this same sense of home may be touched be the way Didion connects with them through her use of description. While she does not directly relate her point to the audience it is clearly present. Each element in the essay highlights not only the sense of family that is there but how they influence a person's perspective and attitude. While one shares in her journey through her past and her visits with her family it brings to mind how one may or may not have this same sense of family to pass on to their family or even have it themselves. This point is summoned in the closing paragraph when Didion herself reflects on this thought. The flow of this narrative may seem jumpy or disconnected and illogical to some but to others who share a similar perspective the details seem like a flood of memories. Every detail and element is timeless and independent of the others while at the same time holding a deeper connection shared with all of the others. Each detail holds a value that isn't noticed at first by others just like each of the items she mentions holds a value to her and her family but is lost on her husband who doesn't share the same sense of home with her. Didion well highlighted the issue that she felt about not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Joan Didion's On Going Home By Joan Didion What does the word home mean? In the essay "On Going Home" by Didion she recreates her feelings and thoughts about her meaning of home. Family is a big part of one's life and important one at that and Didion uses it as the center of her work. The work itself is about re– defining what home truly is. Home to many people is where you live but to Didion it was where her family was. The story starts out as an innocent retelling of how it is her daughter's first birthday and how she is celebrating it with her family down in Central Valley California. Yet as the essay goes on it starts to become a blast to the past into Didion's childhood. She describes the family she has made and the family she came from and how there is a distinct difference ... This allows her to emphasize the word "paralyzed," which aptly describes how Didion feels when considering both of her home–lives" (troykelleher3). This quote gives off the idea that she is scared to draw her attention to the past and take it apart, but she barely now gained the backbone to face her past. Dust is constantly talked about in the essay probably suggesting she can't move on in her life. When dust starts to collect it usually means someone doesn't have the time to clean it up or they don't care. Didion's inability to clean up one drawer just shows that she is struggling. Didion's "home" doesn't have the feeling of safety because of this quote "I come to dread my husband's evening call...suggests uneasily that I get out and drive to San Francisco or Berkeley" (Didion 141). This gives the perception that she is most likely cold inside because she doesn't have somewhere she feels absolutely comfortable. The work "On Going Home" is Didion's point of view of what home ultimately is by using her own personal experiences. "The essay describes her struggle to connect her current home life with her prior home life, which are vastly different" (troykelleher3). She starts off her essay by stating this "By "home" I do not mean the house in Los Angles where my husband and I and the baby live, but the place where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Going To Nursing Home For most people, going to the nursing home would not be considered a fun after school activity, but to the members of one of Athens High School's newest organizations, Health Occupations Students of America, we look forward to it. When we go to the nursing home, we help to encourage the patients in any way we can. We like to give patients advice on their health. Patience is key to a successful visit with a patient. For example, a lady who has Alzheimer's does not like to take her medication. I encouraged her to take her medicine because it is essential for her health. • 13. Essay on American Women Leaving the Home and Going to Work One of the most significant sociological changes in the nation's history began in the last decade of the nineteenth century and the ramifications are still being felt today. This change consisted of the large numbers of women who entered the work force. This dramatic change in American society was accompanied by a great deal of controversy and prejudice directed towards women. It was predicted that female employment would bring about the downfall of society and the change of the American family. While a large portion of the public was appalled by the thought of independent young working women, they were also fascinated. Therefore, the attitudes of the public toward these women can be seen in the literature that was produced at that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, the prejudice against female workers essentially allowed their employers at the various factories to blame the women themselves for their low wages. The standard argument was that these women did not "need" to work. Part of this concept was that these women were supported by fathers, brothers, etc. and only wanted the jobs so they would have money for nice clothes and "extras". Despite numerous government statistics that demonstrated financial need by many female workers, the prevailing attitude was that women brought their low earnings on themselves (Kessler– Harris 100). This, of course, totally ignored the government statistics that pertained to immigrant families and minorities, where family finances were the prime motivating factor towards women joining the work force (Kessler–Harris 123). Additionally, the census figures that showed immigrant wives as not working failed to take into consideration that these women were usually employed as their husband's assistants (Anonymous 25; Kessler–Harris 124). Those knowledgeable about working conditions within New York's factories found the facts to be far different from this scenario. While some women lived at home, many did not. At a weekly wage of eight to ten dollars per week, these women generally paid five to six of that for their rooms (Barnum 7). Women who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It seems wired but the senior class always seemed to be up to something every week. I remember thinking my Jr year the my senior class was gonna change how people viewed us. I was so right. You see every year before are home football game against Creighton Prep. Our schools for years would be fighting back and forth. It got to the point where every year the week of the big game the boys at Prep would walk into Westside and either are pools or our courage rock would be covered in blue paint. I remember my senior year was the year that everything changed. We where tired of prep always picking on us and Westside students where not allowed to retaliate. If we where caught doing so we wouldn't be able to walk to the stage come graduation day. Picture this. It was Thursday night around 8:30pm the setting was a high school football field. All the lights where one and there where about 500 students on the field. The student had tents put up. Some people just brought sleeping bags. You can see the football players throwing a football back a forth. There where about 25 teacher that where there also just walking around and hanging out with the students. There was the wrestling team and baseball boy protecting the entrances along with some of the male teachers. It was a sight to see just knowing that us students where not going to do anything. My brother took the lead, grabbing onto a thick plant to haul himself up. Going next, I grab the same vine, though it breaks, dropping me on the clotted earth. My legs become stuck with dirt, my sweat acting like an adhesive. Like the lovely person he is, Gabriel looked down and laughed, before giving me a hand and helping me up and over the incline, as displaced dust trickles down. To break the quiet I turn my embarrassment into his, making fun of his new girlfriend. "Why Bebe?" I quip, "Stella is so much prettier and smarter. And she's actually your age." Glaring at me, he hisses "Can you not. " With this, a realization hit me: their budding romance had ended. And so soon! "Did you guys break up?" I ask, followed quickly by, "Now you can profess your love to Stella!," before running ahead to avoid his furious gaze and swinging arms. His now ex–girlfriend, he didn't even tell me about, instead, I found out through a post on Instagram, which I soon found out had been deleted. We soon entered the shaded area of our hike; the entrance looked like something straight out of Beauty and the Beast, covered by tangled vines and thorns. • 25. Be Careful Going Home, The Roads Are Slippy Essay "Be careful going home. The roads are slippy." That phrase makes me cringe. Western Pennsylvanians are known for their interesting colloquialisms and I can't stand most of them. Colloquialisms are words or phrases that aren't formal or even literary and are spoken in common conversation, according to Oxford Dictionaries. The correct word is slippery and not this strange word pronounced slippy. Other ones like yinz, dippy egg, pop, gob, red up, hoagie, and buggy are common words around here and I believe it makes the people saying them sound like hicks. I've grown up in this area, surrounded by these words, yet I feel each one is worse than the next. This wasn't always the case though. When I was younger, my family said a few of the colloquialisms from this area since they've lived here their whole lives. My mother was from Latrobe and my father was from Johnstown. We lived in a small, extremely rural area between Johnstown and Altoona where you could always smell natural fertilizer and you lived a fair distance from your neighbors. So, by the time I entered school, I had heard a few of them like gob, dippy egg, and sweeper. School was where I learned more phrases and started using them. I would say buggy instead of shopping cart, crick instead of creek, and even slippy that I now loathe. During my freshman year of high school, the drama club went on a trip to New York City and everyone there could tell exactly where we were from. This made me rethink what I was saying and ... In addition, it is also used while problem solving, at times when it is required to be open minded with everyone's points of views. As I grow up, I aspire to maintain the characteristic of being a delegator, as well as maintain a balance throughout the responsibilities that I take. • 31. Joan Didion's On Going Home The work "On Going Home" work is the honesty in re–defining what a home truly is. A home is known to be the place where an individual grew up or is growing up. Joan Didion redefines the word as "...the place where family is...filled with mementos" (1). Home isn't the place you live, it's the place you love. A major part of Didion's love for her home is how it ties her to the past, particularly her childhood. Leaving her home was like leaving her childhood memories behind, as she explains that she "was almost thirty years old before [she] could talk to [her] family on the telephone without crying after [she] had hung up" (1). For example, Didion calls marriage a "betrayal" and describes family–life as an ambush. She feels at fault because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Given the sad tone of the story, there seems to be some emotionally tragic event that has affected her deeply and has made her uneasy when returning to her original home. Sad events that include mental hospitals, graveyards, and rejection surrounds her life and affects the way that she presents herself and the things she converses about with other people. I was able to make this assumption when she states, "Paralyzed by the neurotic lassitude engendered by meeting one's past at every turn, around every corner, inside every cupboard...I decide to meet i head–on and clean out a drawer." This line gives off the idea that she is scared to look back, face, and analyze her past, but she has only now gained the strength to face her past. Her "home" and the fact that she doesn't have the feeling of warmth and safety in her home has affected her personality so much to the point that she starts to remind her aunts of their children who have died. I think that this reflects the idea that she is probably dead inside because she doesn't have a place where she feels completely comfortable in. The dust references throughout the story all suggest she isn't able to move on. Normally dust starts to collect on furniture when someone doesn't have the care to clean it up and I think that is the same for Joan and her inability to clean up a simple drawer in her bedroom filled with things of the ... I got to school early and sat alone in the cafeteria. Everyone walked in happy with their friends talking about their weekends. While I was just reading some book about some ancient kung fu warrior. The author of "On Going Home", Joan Didion finds herself caught between the sentiments of her life growing up and the realities of her life today. She is wondering if she can give her daughter "home" like she had. My family consists of my mom, dad, two sisters, and one brother. I am the youngest child of the family. With my siblings being a good deal older than me, I tended to feel left out when they got to do things that I didn't. The age gap left me feeling like an outsider sometimes. • 37. On Going Home By Kerstin Bratsch Analysis In Kerstin Bratsch's painting "Unstable Talismanic Renderings–27" there is an array of talismans of varied size, shapes and colors depicted on one canvas. The painting can be viewed as symbolic of the human mind. Additionally, the diversity, confusion, energy and activity draw an analogy to the dynamics of the powerhouse, the mind, whereas the absence of cohesion and clarity reflects the transient nature of our thoughts and the fluctuating shades of our emotions. There is constant activity in our brain and this vigor shapes the window through which we look at this world. Joan Didion's essay "On Going Home" sheds insight onto the dynamic human mind through the paradigm shift Didion experiences on visiting her childhood home for her daughter's first birthday. As one leaf withers and falls from the tree, a new one grows in its place and the tree is complete again. However, Didion's tree is still incomplete as the new leaf, the 'house' she shares with her husband and daughter in Los Angeles, is loosely attached to her tree and hasn't replaced the former leaf, her childhood home in Central Valley of California. This "troublesome distinction" between her old and new home disturbs Didion deeply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 49. On Going Home By Joan Didion In her essay "On Going Home," author Joan Didion speaks to new parents about how the experience of "going home" after starting a new family can trigger feelings of disconnection between families, old and new. Written from Didion's own experience returning to her childhood home for her daughter's first birthday, the essay describes her nostalgia for her previous home and how she regrets being unable to, as a mother, provide the same familial experiences she had as a child. Using relatable invention, imagery–inducing arrangement, and syntax that inspires more deliberate reading by the audience, Didion effectively convinces her readers of the familial fragmentation that occurs with the creation of a nuclear family. Didion's use of the first canon of rhetoric, invention, exemplifies her command of the emotional side of rhetoric. An example is the line, "I have another cup of coffee with my mother. We get along very well, veterans of a guerilla war we never understood" (Didion par. 3). This line expertly conveys the combative nature of the relationship a mother has with her ... Another instance of effective use of similar syntax is the lines "Marriage is the classic betrayal. Or perhaps it is not any more" (par. 1–2). When Didion makes observations like these but doesn't immediately offer more explanation, the audience must read with the intent of finding out what is meant, rather than simply being handed a justification. These short, direct thoughts unembellished by accompanying explanations create more engaging writing, resulting in a more affected audience that is more likely to extract Didion's ... • 51. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Living With Family Living alone or living with family has its advantages and disadvantages which include the amount of responsibilities, freedom and financial stability a person has.The majority of young adults for years dream about the day they finally get to move out of their parents home and start living independently. Suddenly when it's time to move out and live on their own it becomes overwhelming. Most teenagers think they are ready to take on the responsibility of living independently but when reality sets in, they realize that providing for themselves is surprisingly more difficult than living with their family. When living with parents a good portion of responsibility a young adult is given are tasks to get them prepared for early adulthood. This means sharing responsibilities that contribute to the house such as chores. For example, today they're responsible for washing the dishes, the next day cleaning the living room and the bathroom. A disadvantage of living with parents would be the amount of freedom that is given. For example, in most households, there is a set curfew time to be home by, and the consequences of arriving late past the curfew time would be getting grounded, no internet for two days, or getting that favorite play system taken away. There is no talking on the phone past certain hours, not being allowed to go to that concert that's been on their to–do list because mom and dad would rather have them stay home. He acquired more knowledge, which led him to understand there are issues that should be fixed. This led Malcolm X to help the population of African Americans understand that supremacy and racism exist amongst them. Malcolm X believed that people should be treated equally, and be given equal rights just like their counterparts. This influenced people to be more aware of their environment and protest on the problems they face. Eventually, this movement made the government guarantee that African Americans should be given the most fundamental rights. Similar to the protest that Sukma encountered, it was all for a cause. This cause was acknowledged because Malcolm X used his education to understand the bias differences. To a large degree, moreover, the protest allowed people to let go of their differences and come together to fight a bigger cause. Education allows people to spread their knowledge to others and allow them to understand the issues they face. This connects to Sukma's idea that knowledge gives us the ability to take social ... • 63. Personal Statement : Homework Taught Me When I was young, I had my own agenda and things I thought were most important in my life. I had everything in order and I knew exactly what I wanted to do and when to do it. I did, however, have my daily chores. I had smaller chores like cleaning my room or helping put dishes in the sink starting around six years old. As I got older my chore list became longer which included washing dishes, sweeping the floor, feeding our dogs, and general cleaning. I had four siblings in my household so they were all divided among us. At the time, I did not know how much I was learning from these duties. The many lessons chores taught me was not necessarily obvious to me until I became an adult and was living on my own. If you were to ask most children or teenagers how doing chores and other household work would benefit them they would probably not believe there was any advantage for their future. As a teenager they may need more motivation or discipline in order to get them to even attempt their duties. As I came into adulthood, I found that one of the biggest benefits I gained was my inward drive to see any project I start to the end; whether it be school work, career, or family. In my later teenage years, I wanted to get a job as soon as I was legally able. Even though it was a part time job at the local grocery store, I ensured that I was always on time and performed my duties above standard. My parents played a large part in teaching me to be dedicated, managing my time and taking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Summary Of On Going Home By Joan Didion For the first time in 130 years, more young adults are living with parents until their mid thirties. Part of this could be an emotional attachment keeping them from leaving home because after they leave, everything will change. However, many are losing their real sense of home and are just using it as a place where they can avoid paying bills and many other responsibilities. Many young adults now do not understand the extensive sacrifice it is to leave their one and only home. In "On Going Home," Joan Didion expounds on her struggle to connect with her current house, in a nostalgic and resigned tone, and vivid imagery, symbolism, and comparison Didion expresses the regret she feels every time she remembers she left her "home". The essay it's based on the time Didion visited her parents' home to celebrate her daughter's 1 year old birthday. Throughout the visit Didion couldn't help but feel resentment to leave her "home". Didion stated that she came "to dread my husband's evening call" because she didn't want to go back to Los Angeles or even be reminded of it (2). Didion wishes she could stay in her "home" where she is completely happy. We find her desperately looking around the house for her past "around every corner, inside every cupboard" she "aimlessly" goes "from room to room" looking for something she once lost and will never get back (2). Didion feels the need to reconnect with her family and, although not stated, Didion longs to go back in time and prevent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Going To Eat At Home Or Restaurants Essay People all around the world are busy. Busy with school, work, and other extra activities. People find that going out to a restaurant would be quicker and more convenient. The fact remains that people have to eat, whether it be cooking at home or going out. Though cooking at home and eating out are are completely different ways to eat, they could not be any more different in quality, portion, and cost. When families eat at home, they know the ingredients that have been added to their meals and the quality of the food. Moreover, they know the cleanliness of where the food has been prepared. At home, they know if the person preparing has washed his/her hands. When going out to eat, the family has no idea what happens in the kitchen. Their food could have been spit on, dropped, or even possibly a hair from a cook could fall into their dish. The quality of food is important to the consumer, due to if the food does not taste well, more than likely they will not eat it. Also, the restaurant serves sometimes less quality than what you buy and less quantity. When going out to eat at a restaurant, people prefer to recieve their money's worth in the food they order. That typically comes down to portion sizes. as unhealthy as it is, most people do not know the proper portion and tend to eat the entire meal that is presented to them. While, at home, when families cook the meal themselves, the portions are smaller due to the recommended serving size of the meal. Most restaurants are guilty of serving anywhere from double to triple a normal food portion. Portion control is an important part in food. That makes it important to understand what a recommended serving size is for the food prepared is, and only ordering that amount. When families prepare their meals at home, they are able to control what goes on the plate, and what not to eat. Eating out at restaurants are typically portioned excessively, and some dishes can contain an entire day's worth of calories. It's hard to beat the convenience of going to a restaurant and having cooks prepare and serve the food is relaxing and eliminates the hassle of having to cook dinner. On the other hand, there are many great benefits of that cooking at home, such as price. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It wasn't only feelings that I didn't care about, it was almost any and everything, I didn't see the point to a lot of things, like why people have so much love for another and there's no relation through bloodline, or why people pray to a higher power they can't even see,or why people have feelings for the same sex, or even why be born just to know you're going to die eventually. • 75. On Going Home Joan Didion Analysis On Going Home was published in Slouching Towards Bethlehem around 1960. Joan Didion's article, On going home, is a personal narrative about Joan's outlook of what home truly is. In the article, Joan Didion describes her home and some of the events that occurred to paint a picture of how her home was and what she considered home for that; while also showing her concerns of her daughter considering the home she is creating, a good home. An element that catches the reader's eye throughout Joan Didion's article, On Going Home, is Joan Didion's tone and style; both of which clearly present her thoughts to the reader. Joan Didion's writing style for On Going Home includes her using parenthesis to show her thoughts, scattered narration, strong emotive language, and using fragmented sentences. Along with that, Joan Didion's tone during her writing was sad and frustrated and her language throughout On Going Home reflected that. The part that stands out the most with Didion's writing style is how she writes her sentences. Many of Didion's sentences follow the stream of consciousness or are more of interior monologue. An example of this is in her statement when she said, "What could that girl possibly make of, say, Long Day's Journey into Night? Who is beside the point?."(Didion 2) This sentence shows how Didion would phrase her sentences as if they were just her thoughts. Along with this, Didion also had scattered narration in her article; which makes her writing seem even more as if it is just her thoughts as she looks through her childhood home. The scattered narration in Didion's article also showed her perception of her childhood home in a way. Another technique that Didion used in her writing was to have sentence fragments. Many of the sentence fragments used in Joan's writing seemed to paint a better picture for the reader to clearly see what Didion was seeing without using action verbs which can occasionally take the reader away from imagining what the author was describing. Along with that, the sentence fragments can also make the reader feel overwhelmed which could also be how Didion was feeling as she stayed at her childhood home and tried to piece together her thoughts. Joan also used parenthesis in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Buying a New Home This paper will address what to consider when buying a new home and what affects like marginal benefit, marginal cost, strength of the economy, domestic economy, and international trade, can have on situations and the conditions when making a decision to purchase a home. The principles of economics can directly relate to the purchase of a house, because you must consider all the possible affects your decision might have and the principles do a great job at helping you be more analytical with your decision and your reasoning to buy. There are ramifications from a decrease in value of the dollar, examples are; capital investment, multiple plant openings and closings. Because many companies over time have outsourced work to foreign companies because the cost to employ people is cheaper, but the dollar has decrease in value which is returning the factories or call centers back to the U.S. International trade is very important to our domestic economy as it does decrease the value and power of the dollar, which will then change our ability to afford things at a respectable price. This is the reason for consideration when purchasing a home; these factors are necessary to your dream of owning a home. But when these factors are what they are right now, you can see why many might find a purchase like a home is out of reach with the decreased value of the dollar and a struggling economy. If Americans can start doing things a little different, like consuming less and finding ways to innovate new ideas and more efficient ways to do more, we can then find a solution to these failures in our economy.
