The Impact Of Automation And Millennial Unemployment
Automation and Millennial Unemployment Since the industrial revolution, automation in
workplaces has steadily increased. However, with a sudden boom of technological advances, people
have created machines that can perform tasks more efficiently – and arguably better – than humans.
Because millennials, defined by the United States Census Bureau as the generation born between
1982 and 2000 (United States Census Bureau, 2017), either just entered into the workforce or will
first be entering the workforce in the next couple years, they seem the most vulnerable to
automation taking over their jobs. Mark Zuckerberg, entrepreneur and founder of Facebook, said "
[the millennial] generation will have to deal with tens of millions of jobs replaced by automation
like self–driving cars and trucks" (Zuckerberg, 2017). Danielle Paquette, journalist for the
Washington Post, believes that no single job is safe from automation; "every job has some
component a robot could theoretically handle" (Paquette 2017). Both of the previous statements
create a question about how automation will affect the un– and underemployment of the millennial
generation. The risk of either un– or underemployment for millennials depends largely on the type
of job, as well as each a person's degrees and other qualifications. By delving into the problem of
automation in workplaces, maybe people can find a way to make the benefits of automation
outweigh the consequences. In order to for people to understand why millennials are especially
vulnerable in regards to workplace automation, they must understand what "millennial" means.
While the United States Census Bureau does provide the ages that represent millennials (United
States Census Bureau), people typically tend to consider those who are currently between about
twenty and thirty years of age as millennials. People in their twenties are either still in school, or just
leaving universities, graduate schools, or any other type of professional training, and need to start
looking for jobs that can lead to potential careers. A large amount of unemployed Americans
includes millennials, forty percent specifically (Goodman, 2015). Considering that the workforce
consists of people roughly between the ages of

Unemployment : Unemployment And Unemployment
INTRODUCTION What is unemployment? Unemployment happens when a man who is effectively
looking for employment is not able to find some kind of employment. Unemployment is regularly
utilised as a measure of the economy's wellbeing. The most regularly referred to gauge of
unemployment is the unemployment rate. This is the quantity of unemployed persons divided by the
quantity of individuals in the work force. The unemployed are those individuals capable, accessible
and willing to work at the going wage yet can 't discover work in spite of a want to work. How is
unemployment measured? Measuring unemployment precisely is made difficult due to improper
facts. Not all cases of unemployment are recorded, and a few records of unemployment may not be
exact. Since the unemployed are qualified for benefits, a few people may work, yet do not disclose
it, and take advantage. On the other hand, numerous unemployed may not try to inform the
authorities, and this unemployment goes unrecorded. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
conducts a monthly Labour Force Survey. This family unit survey is intended to create key facts of
unemployment (and employment) from a sample of more or less 56,000 individuals. The study 's
meaning of unemployment matches to universal benchmarks and rules. According to ABS
unemployed persons are characterised as all persons aged 15 years and over who were not working
amid the reference week and: had effectively searched for work in the past four

Unemployment And Underemployment Of College Graduates
SECONDARY RESEARCH FINDINGS
Unemployment and Underemployment of College Graduates
"The Class of 2014: The Weak Economy Is Idling Too Many Young Graduates," published on the
Economic Policy Institute website, reported that the trend of the labor market would remain for ten
to fifteen years (Shierholz, Davis, & Kimball, 2014, Para 10). The report showed that
unemployment rate for college graduates was high, and college graduates had jobs requiring less
college educations with low pay. Average pay was 7.7 percent lower than the great recession period
5 years ago (Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 9). Shierholz et al. (2014) explained that the great recession
was not the factor for such a trend. With the weak market trend, employers did not have motivation
to hire new college graduates (Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 23). In 2014, unemployment and
underemployment rate for college graduates indicated 8.5 percent and 16.8 percent respectively
(Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 4). New college graduates have relatively difficult time to get jobs. The
report also identified that the employment rate was different among different race and ethnicity.
Latino and African American's unemployment rate showed higher than White (Shierholz et al.,
2014, Para 4). The report indicated that less jobs required general intelligence associated
intelligence quotient (Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 4). Employers may demand a new skill set.

What Is The Csr Analysis Of Sappi
Sappi – Inspired by Life
Background Information on Sappi
Sappi, founded in 1936, is a company known worldwide for producing paper, paper pulp and wood
pulp which is converted, by further development, into other products.
Businesses convert the Sappi produce into items or products which they trade to make a profit,
examples of these items include household goods, textiles, magazines, books, tissues etc.
In South Africa, they have plantations in Kwa–Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga.
Why I chose to conduct a CSR analysis on Sappi
I specifically choose to conduct a CSR analysis on Sappi because they are a company who provides
us with a resource we use daily.
Although Sappi produces paper, and deforestation is an ever increasing issue on our planet, Sappi
have come up with solutions to be environmentally friendly, for example, their production of Triple
Green Paper which incorporates 60% of the unused fibres in sugar cane extraction. This reduces the
amount of trees that are cut down.

Another reason as to why I chose to do a CSR analysis on Sappi is because majority of their
Corporate Social Responsibility projects target South Africa, mainly because we are a third world
country.
Sappi involves themselves in a number of different projects which are aimed at entirely different
aspects of need, such as education, lack of skill, the environment etc. and is not focused entirely on
one socio–economic issue.

The Pros And Cons Of Crime
People make a choice to commit crimes based on a rational choice where they weighing the benefits
and costs of a crime versus the negative aspects derived from punishment (Lee & Holoviak, 2006).
The costs of associated with punishment for committing a crime in include loss of opportunities for
legitimate income. Physical imprisonment, and possibly guilt (Lee & Holoviak, 2006). The potential
costs of punishment increase as the probability of getting caught or convicted increase (Lee &
Holoviak, 2006). An unemployed teenager is more likely to commit crime than an older high–
income person because the latter stands to lose more (Lee & Holoviak, 2006). Studies on the
relationship between crime and unemployment are usually weak, but Raphael and Ebmer suggest
that this is due to not account for the abuse of alcohol by those who are unemployed (Raphael &
Ebmer, 1998). Taking into account alcohol abuse, those who are unemployed generally are more
likely to commit crimes of survival (Raphael & Ebmer, 1998). Their study from 1970 to 1997
looked at a state level looked seven felony crimes, murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated
assault, burglary, larcenty–theft, and motor vehicle theft (Raphael & Ebmer, 1998). On average the
study found that for every 100,000 persons across the fifty states, there was 2,788 crimes of larceny
and 9 murders (Raphael & Ebmer). Through the years as unemployment went up, crimes went up,
and the abuse of alcohol in the relate crimes played a strong

Crime and Poverty in Richmond, Virginia
Unemployment in the city limits further feeds the belly of poverty. Unemployment rates for
Richmond in August 2013 were 8.2% (United States Department of Labor, 2013). These rates
represent only those that are documented as unemployed and does not consider the "under
employed" as they may be working but not getting paid for a full work week. These unemployment
rates would likely be higher if they were accurate and all inclusive of the unemployed in Richmond.
The unemployment rate for the entire state of Virginia was reported at 5.8% in August 2013 (United
States Department of Labor). The unemployment rate is related to education. There are not enough
good paying jobs to support those who did not finish basic high school. There are not ... Show more

Living in communities that are run down, neglected and forgotten takes a toll on all members of the
community. This is especially true when residents witness new properties being erected around the
city as their own neighborhoods are deemed "ghettos" and not receiving the investment necessary
for improvements. Many of the low income housing that is available to city residents aren't the most
desirable properties as they may have structural deficiencies, lead paint, rats and roaches running
amuck. Many older properties also do not have adequately functioning heat or hot water availability.
The housing projects also do not have air conditioning. On hot days, having no cool break in
addition to all the other negative social factors, this can be a deadly combination that may
perpetuate frustrations and ultimately lead to violence. It is no secret that the city of Richmond has a
major problem with drugs and drug dealing. Where there is demand, there will be supply. The
Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) is the local agency in charge of all
operations related to Richmond's public housing communities. In an effort to fight crime and drug
dealing in these communities, the RRHA has developed strict policies that ban anyone with drug
convictions from their private properties. Although this may appear to be a great crime fighting
strategy, we cannot ignore the fact that crime just doesn't go away because of laws or

Income Underemployment Essay
Measurement of Underemployment Due to limitations in data which were inevitable in using a
survey not specifically designed to measure underemployment among the Ukrainian population, this
study relies on modified metrics. Lack of information about hours worked forced the elimination of
an "hours–underemployed" classification. Unlike previous studies which determined income–
underemployment and skill–underemployment by means of comparison to some objective standard
(Jensen & Slack, 2003; find others), this study utilizes subjective self–reported information.
Subjective measures have been shown to better predict psychological outcomes than objective
alternatives (Maynard & Feldman, 2011 as cited in Allan et al., 2017), and the particular ... Show

Only those who had at least started higher education (levels 5–8) could qualify as income–
underemployed by reporting that they were unable to afford food (N = 64). Skill–underemployment
was determined through a similarly subjective self–report of labor underutilization. Respondents
were asked: "In the past 12 months, have you experienced stress because your abilities were under–
utilized at work?" Those who answered yes were automatically categorized as being skill–
underemployed (N= 78). A third underemployment category was added to accommodate for the
absence of hours–underemployed and to create a more comprehensive study. The previously
mentioned concept of status–underemployment was adopted and implemented with a subjective
metric provided by the survey data: the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status ("MacArthur
SES & Health Network | Research," n.d.). Respondents were presented an image of a ladder and
asked to mark an "X" on the rung that indicates their position in Ukraine in terms of education,
money, and occupational respect. Scores ranged from one to ten and a mean status–ranking was
calculated for each of the eight aforementioned education levels. If an individual's score was less
than one standard deviation below the mean for their respective education level, they were
categorized as status–underemployed (N = 54). An initial measurement preceding the variables
outlined above included more objective measures of underemployment that

Underemployment In Canada
Underemployment Underemployment, though less often studied, is also a common issue among
refugees. Defined as "working fewer hours than a person normally works" and the "underutilization
of a person's skills, qualifications, or experience", underemployment is harder to measure and are
often self–reported (Scott 2015). Krahn et al. (2000) conducted a series interviews with over 525
adult refugees settled in Alberta between 1992 and 1997 to determine the prevalence of
underemployment among refugee populations. It found that although over 82% of refugees
interviewed had held paying jobs after their arrival in Canada, "it is clear that many had not found
steady employment", with over 28% of the interviewees employed part–time (66). While 39% ...

"refugees are admitted [...] primarily on humanitarian rather than economic grounds", less
concerned about "their ability to establish themselves [and their] economic potential" and more
about "their need for Canada's protection" (18). Yu argues that because of this, refugee populations
tend to be less educated and possess lower levels of language skills, leading to lower levels of
income. Indeed, Krahn et. al (2000) found that only 43% of the refugees interviewed has received
post–secondary credentials at home, compared to the Alberta average of 49% (p.63). Meanwhile,

A Critical Analysis Of Public Education
US society reflects systems and institutions that act in concert with one another to maintain a class
infrastructure that in large part finds its roots in race. A critical analysis of public education lends
discussion to African, and Hispanic Americans having a close relationship to chronically failing
schools; an evaluation of the American welfare system reveals a disproportionate minority
representation, a discussion of public health crises note an overabundance of minority emergence,
and a deep look into the criminal justice system uncovers a similar, and potentially even more
ruinous fate for minorities. For example, almost one in three (32.2%) of young black men in the age
group 20–29 is under criminal justice supervision on any given day –– in prison or jail, on probation
or parole (Mauer and Huling (1995), moreover, in recent years, African American women have
experienced the greatest increase in criminal justice supervision of all demographic groups, with
their rate of criminal justice supervision rising by 78% from 1989–2004. While these sobering
statistics point to a bias by police and the interworkings of the criminal justice system toward
minorities, they also beg the question: are minorities committing more crime than their majority
counterparts? The New Century Foundations offer in its study that: Blacks are seven times more
likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.
Further adding that Hispanics commit

Changes During The Agricultural Community Essay
Due to changes in the agricultural community there was in early nineteenth century East Anglia a
significant situation of underemployment within the agricultural labourers' community. At this time
it was also being recognised that there was an ever increasing growth in population; for instance:
'several landowners and journalists attributed the problems of rural society to the size of the
labourers' families and to their tendency to marry at an early age.' It has been suggested that the
average size of the agricultural labourers' household was 4.9. This population rise in turn put
pressure on the supply of housing, resulting in many agricultural labouring families living in small,
squalid and overcrowded cottages, many consisting of just one room, with no ceiling, just the bare
roof tiles and a clay floor. The building itself would have been constructed from unbound stone or
wattle and mud. It can be suggested that: The vegetable substances mixed with the mud to make it
bind, rapidly decompose, leaving the walls porous. The earth of the floor is full of vegetable matter
[...] it is peculiarly liable to damp.' It can be suggested therefore that the growth of population,
coupled with the deterioration of living standards within agricultural communities of East Anglia
contributed towards the pauperisation of the agricultural labourers and their families. The
aforementioned growth of population within the agricultural communities of East Anglia led to an
ever increasing

Introduction
My name is Hannah Tran. I am an international student undertaking my last year for a Bachelor of
Business degree at University of Australia. I am living with my sister. However, I would like to
make up a plan to purchase my first home 8 years after graduating from university. At the end of this
year, I would have $6,000 set aside from home purchase. Each year, I would earn 5.5% interest on

This amount of annual saving is possible. $7,467.82 per year is equal to $622.32 per month, or
$143.61 per week. The minimum wages for employee in Australia is $15 an hour. Even international
student might work up to 20 hours a week, which is equal to $300. Since I am living with my sister
in Sydney, I do not have to pay for rent. While a typical international student might save money by
sharing a room with their friends, so that they might pay only $50 – $80 a week per person living in
suburb areas. Transportation and food might cost up to $70 a week per person, if people buy food
and cook by themselves. Plus, after my graduating, I might find a company to sponsor me. Thus,
there is no working limit. I might go to work more and save more for my plan as well. Therefore,
this saving target is achievable.
C. Risks [4 marks]
However, as future is unpredictable, there are some risks that might affect my first home financing
plan. These are two examples for the risks that I might have to face: 1. Unemployment a) As there

Not Just A Paycheck By Film Review
Not just A Paycheck It is hard when you are a middle class family, and eventually a good life passes
to be a low income family. Not just a Paycheck from Unnatural Causes describes how
unemployment, and change on class & income can transform people 's health. The film presents
how a middle white family started seen discrepancies among being working class and the rich. In
fact, they start to understand what mean being unemployment. Basically, the film briefly explains
the reasons why companies have to move to different places not matter the wellbeing of their
workers. Thus, what really matter in this industrialized world is profit, and that 's what company
holders are seeking at cost of anything. Clearly, companies do not care what is going to be the life of
an unemployment because chair holders never have to experience it generally. In reality, the closure
of companies directly constitute to a negative impact on the rate of jobs and the stress level on the
people who lose their jobs which is connected to the health of the US. In fact, the closure of
companies take the position of being a stressor which means it affects the unemployment
psychologically, and the entire family. Therefore, their family structure is interfered in a negative
away. When people work for an entire life for a certain company, it is hard to accustom to do a new
job if it is the only task that the person can do. Additionally, it is harder when the unemployed is old

Persuasive Speech For College Essay
1. Attention Step
Attention Getter: I'm certain that everyone in this classroom does not want to fall into the statistics
of being unemployment after graduation. Therefore, you should take into consideration my speech
about how you can avoid this situation and start acting now.
Thesis: I will be stating some steps that will ensure you to be successful individuals and help you
avoid the experience of being an unemployed college graduate.
Relevancy: This topic pertains to all of us even me because were all college students and some of us
are closer to graduation. As we individually approach our graduations, we need to prepare for the
next stage in our paths. Sometimes it's hard to admit that we need some assistance before taking off
in our careers.
Credibility: While I was conducting my research, I was fortunate to get more insight from Jenna
Heath, a career professional in the Career Services office. I was able to learn more about the
services they offer and conclude my theory of how beneficial it is to seek their resources.
More introductory information:
I conducted an in–person survey interview with Jenna from Career Services who gave me more
insight of how undergraduate students are utilizing their services. Within the last week an estimated
30 students schedule an appointment or dropped in for advising into their office. In a school with
29,700 students that number seems low for the number of students that could potentially need help
but that don't reach out for help.

The proportion of wage employed households was more or less constant and accounted for 30 per
cent of the total rural households. The Indian rural labour market is characterised by the
predominance of self and wage employed in agriculture. A rise in the share of agricultural labourers'
has been an universal phenomenon confirming the marginalisation phenomenon; however the
degree of increase varied across the states and over time. Furthermore, male workers joined the
ranks of agricultural labour and a reverse pattern i.e. rise in 'cultivator' category was observed
among female workers. Another disquieting feature has been the increasing degree of casualisation
among female labourers and falling trend in regular employment, while incidence of casual labour
was more among males. The regular employment was moderate in the case of females. The
percentage of self–employed male workers was more in the North–West region. The casualisation of
male labour was higher in South, West and East zones of India. As for female workers, there was an
inverse relation between self–employment and casualisation and in states with high poverty
incidence, the latter phenomenon has been on the rise. The wage rates were found to be low in

Who Moved My Cheese Essay
Who Moved My Cheese?
Before reading "Who Moved My Cheese?", by Spencer Johnson, I scanned through it real quick and
it seemed like a fairly simplistic read. I did not originally expect much out of the book with its sort
of corny pictures of cheese and story about made up people and situation. Once I began to read it I
realized it was a little more complex than a mouse going through a maze to obtain cheese. The
beginning starts out with a group of former classmates gathered around discussing their current jobs
and such. Then the story of Who Moved My Cheese is brought up and one of the alumni begin
telling the whole story...
The story starts out with four made up characters, a couple of simple mice named Sniff and Scurry
and two beings, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Which eventually prevented it from moving on by accepting change.
The story refers to "Cheese Stations" often, which I believe could represent a broad spectrum of
things. Some examples are a job, significant other, goals in life, being the top sales person in your
office or maybe something you have bee saving up for. Whatever it may be there is always a road to
take you their. The maze alone can best be described as the journey one must take to reach their
"cheese" or something a person wants in life. The maze is very symbolic in that it represents the
hardships and journey people must make to attain achievement. Not every turn leads to success, that
is why people must be able to adapt and know whats around the corner when they are trying to
achieve their goals.
The three characters that seem to reach the "cheese" every time are Scurry and Sniff. This is because
they keep things simple and each have attributes that lead them to reaching their cheese. Later on
Haw also reaches his goal, but only after he comes to the realization that he shouldn't be repeating
the same steps over and over and expect different results. Doing this would lead him to insanity,
something his friend Hem is familiar with.
I believe that in today's world, with unemployment higher than usual, many people seem to lean
towards the Hem state of mind. Which in a way can be toxic to people around them and lead to
failure and/or a difficult life. I mainly associate myself with the three other types

Venezuela Vs Usa Research Paper
Newly graduated youths in Venezuela vs The US, challenges and difficulties
Venezuela and the United States, two countries vastly different economically. One of them is one the
biggest economies on the world; albeit with many problems, the other, a crumbling state facing the
harsh difficulties of the drop in oil prices; its main source of revenue. For either of them, young
people represent the future. But whether they are newly graduated in Venezuela or in the United
States, young people must face an array of problems when it comes time to join the workforce and
become one of its country's productive citizens. In the US, a large amount of debt, lack of work
experience, low wages, and underemployment are some of the problems they face. In Venezuela, it
is not much different, you just need to add great economic instability and high emigration rates to
the mix in exchange for debt.
One of the main problems US graduates have to deal with is debt. New graduates are compounded
because more students finish their university studies with massive amounts of debt; university
graduates in the US are entering the job market with an average of $33,000 in student loan debt, due

Analysis Of The Article ' The Busy Trap '
Rough Draft In the article " The Busy Trap" Kreider tries to convince readers to chose time over
money. He makes numerous points including how boasting about busyness takes the form of a
complaint. He insults those who voluntarily take on obligations by remarking that they are obsessed
with always being occupied. However, the basis for such a conclusion is founded on only a few
examples of individuals who were negatively affected by the burden of work. In Kreider's opinion it
is wasteful to be busy all the time because life is too short to work more than 5 hours per day and
not spend enough time in one's happy place. What is your happy place? Picture it and stay there for
a while letting your thoughts flow. Notice that your thinking becomes more positive and somewhat
out of reach. Next, imagine a life with minimal stress that includes little to no work and much
enjoyment; now you 're floating back to reality because that type of life is not in the grasps of most.
Similarly, Kreider writes his article as if most people have plenty of time to waste, and to enjoy
themselves, as he has. Kreider's overall point that people keep themselves busy to escape the
feelings of emptiness is both ignorant and a reflection of his narrow perspective of the world. His
opinion that people feel apprehensive when not working, along with the fact that most people
wouldn't be content living the lifestyle Kreider is promoting, plus his support towards the
propositions of full unemployment and a

women in India. One study puts female unemployment at six to seven times that of men. In the rural

the textiles sector during 1994–2000. Female underemployment is also increasing at a faster rate

Pros And Cons Of Underemployment
Is Doctor Mangahas Right? (on Unemployment and Underemployment) by: Jehan E. Siglos, Regina
Espinas & Enrique Teves Unemployment and underemployment, simple words to speak yet has
more than one concept on how to determine. Starting off with unemployment: for the government,
unemployed means idle last week + looking for work + available for work based on the official
Labor Force Survey (Chanco, 2014), and according to the National Statistical Coordination Board
unemployed are those without work + currently available for work + seeking work in accordance
with the definition given by International Labor Organization (ILO), while on the other hand
according to the Social Weather Station was that the unemployed are those who has no job now +
looking for work and this is what Dr. Mahar Mangahas believed. And for the term

And on the SWS they only have no job now + looking for work for unemployment definition.
According to Dr. Mahar Mangahas on SWS those with no job but not looking for job, are outside of
the labor force. But according to the NSCB they still fall to unemployed those who are not seeking
work in considering the following reasons: (a) tired/believe no work available, i.e., the discouraged
workers who looked for work within the last six months prior to the interview date; (b) awaiting
results of previous job application; (c) temporary illness/disability; (d) bad weather; and (e) waiting
for rehire/job recall. And also Dr. Mangahas said that there are those "jobless but employed" they
are jobless, were not idle in the past week but did odd work to earn whatever they could. But we
think he has used the wrong term for that, the person was not idle but if we are going to base on the
definition of the SWS unemployed are those who has no job now

intervention should be required regarding government policy as the laws of supply and demand will
be self–correcting. John Maynard Keynes was an important figure that worked to apply fiscal policy
that would remedy an economic depression. Keynes's idea of fiscal policy is the means by which
government adjusts its spending levels and tax rates to monitor and influence the economy. Further,
Keynes is known as the father of "Mixed Economy", in which both the private sector (households
and privately owned businesses) and public sector (government) have an active and important role
in the economy. He argued that in a capitalist economy, the government would have a direct
response to where in a business cycle the economy was at any particular time–Borrow to spend in a
Recession or Bust, and spend only to the level of revenue collected during a period of growth or
Booms. Milton Friedman, an American economist, believed strongly in a neoclassical, one–
directional approach to monetary policy, where the Federal Reserve should limit monetary policy to
increasing M1 (primary money supply) at a consistent rate, slightly higher than the birth rate, in
order to keep economic growth at effective levels. Moreover, he believed the federal government
should tax minimally in order to

Underemployment And Student Debt
Across the nation, recent college graduates are experiencing an excessive amount of student debt
and underemployment– in fact, it has now reached the largest in our nation's history at a staggering
1.2 trillion dollars (Source 1). Additionally, as many as 44% of recent college graduates are facing
underemployment (Source 2). Underemployment can be defined as working a job that doesn't
require a bachelor's or college degree. With underemployment and student debt increasing at
exponentially high rates, it's now becoming debated whether or not college is even worth the cost
and time investment. Though there is one question that should be asked: How did we get to this
point as a nation? Why aren't recent college graduates prospering in comparison ... Show more

Clearly, minimal has been done to help the issue. As a result, there will be likely consequences of
this sometime within the next few decades to come. For one, a bachelor's degree will diminish in
value within the next couple of years. Additionally, since a bachelor's degree is currently
deprecating in value, more students will have to look into either Graduate, Law or Medical school–
schools in which the average tuition is nearly triple that of an undergraduate degree. Due to the high
price of attaining either a Masters or a Doctorate, student debt will increase substantially as many
students don't have the money to cover the steep $100,000 cost. With higher unemployment and
underemployment rates along with a student debt, there will be higher rates of depression amongst
young adults and that might in turn contribute to a higher suicide rate. Along with the overwhelming
emotional consequences debt holds, many recent college graduates will hold off on buying a house,
getting married, and having children– thus, reducing the United State's population and real GDP. If
there is a decrease in our nation's birth rate, many jobs such as those in education, might soon be out
of work due to a decrease in demand for them. Eventually overtime, many prospering students
might not see the benefit in going to

Unemployment Is a Serious Social Issue
LAT1 Task 5 Final 8–2–11 Paul D Burns Western Governors University Unemployment is a Serious
Social Issue Unemployment is the condition and extent of individuals out of work within an
economy, measured by the "official" unemployment rate (U–5). This measure is the number of
unemployed workers divided by the total civilian labor force. As of June the "official"
unemployment rate stands at 9.2%. What is rarely reported, and even more ominous, is the
underemployment rate. This rate includes two groups that are not considered in the official
unemployment rate: discouraged and part–time workers (U.S. Congress, 1986, p. 12). As of June
2011 the U–6 rate stands at 16.2%. There is evidence that underemployment is pervasive in the

In comparison, those out of work more than two years showed extreme economic hardship, with
nearly two–thirds (61%) living on less than $8,000 a year (Sales, 1995, p. 487). So we can see that
those unemployed for longer periods had far fewer resources and relied much more heavily on
public assistance (Sales, 1995, p. 490). In fact if unemployment stretches out to a period of 2 years
or longer we see the following results: * Household savings were significantly diminished after two
years of unemployment with 33% of those surveyed using this resource most heavily during the
second year (Sales, 1995, p. 489) * Targeted government assistance programs for poor households
(food stamps, utility assistance, and Medicaid) became mainstays for increasing numbers of
households. In fact, 73% of workers jobless for more than two years were dependent on public
assistance, and more than 80% received some form of assistance from one of the two means–tested
poverty programs (Sales, 1995, p. 489). * Workers who qualify for means–tested government
assistance programs may have much bleaker future prospects for re–employment, because they are
no longer viewed as potential job candidates either by employers, their families or themselves
(Sales, 1995, p. 491). Finally, part–time work comes at a significant cost to the unemployed
(Wenger, 2001, p. 2). If the unemployed take a part–time job for "economic

Underemployment of College Graduates Essay
Underemployment of College Graduates
In Robert E. Sullivan, Jr.'s "Greatly Reduced Expectations", Sullivan discusses the lack of
employment available to college graduates. Throughout the essay, testimonials are given by four
college graduates who expected more opportunity when they graduated with a four year degree. I
sympathize with these men and women who are working in jobs that do promote their ability. Jim
McKay, a graduate from the University of Washington, with a degree in English, did not expect the
reality that hit him when he went searching for a job. McKay wasn't hired for any of the jobs he
considered English major related. The newspaper wouldn't hire him, nor would his university, nor a
beer company as a sales ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As he nears graduation, McCoy is taking all the interviews he can, just hoping to land something,
and realizes that he may have to settle for a position in sales. "They say they have enough engineers,
and I guess they figure it's easier to teach a technical person how to sell than to teach a salesperson
to be technical." (230) I can understand Brian McCoy's concern over his future. As graduation get's
closer, he realizes that his future might not be as secure as he first thought it was going to be. I find
it upsetting, that a student fresh out of college, has to be hit with the huge disappointment of not
being able to find a decent job within their major. All a person can do, is try not to be discouraged
and keep searching for that job of their dreams. It is believed that the higher the education a person
receives, the more likely they are to land a job right out of college. Jamie Hurd, after graduating
with a six year degree in architecture, has managed to only find a part time job within her field.
When Hurd goes to look for other jobs, she feels the need to "play down her schooling"(230) Hurd
feels, "Here you've got this professional degree, and it's almost a hindrance...Sometimes you feel
overqualified.(230) The situation that Jamie Hurd finds herself in unfortunately is not an uncommon
one. I have heard many stories of being "overqualified". In the United States, if a person

How Is Unemployment Measured?
How is Unemployment Measured? The method used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
for determination of unemployment is closely based from the guidelines of the International Labour
Organization. Monthly, the ABS conducts the Labour Force Survey from a sample of appropriately
0.33 per cent of the population aged 15 years and over. A person is considered unemployed if he is
looking for a job, on a temporary layoff, or is waiting to start a new job. This excludes
institutionalised people, overseas residents, members of permanent defence forces and certain
diplomatic personnel. (ABS, Labour Statistics: Concepts, Sources and Methods, 2013) Generally,
the unemployment rate is a good indicator of labour market conditions. When unemployment is
dropping, often this is the result of more spending and faster economic growth. (Morris, 2012)
Causes of Unemployment There are two main types of factors affecting the level of unemployment
in Australia. When the national expenditure (aggregate demand) and production (gross domestic
product) levels are frail as occurs during recessions or depressions, weak aggregate demand–side
conditions happens causing cyclical unemployment. It vanishes when the economy is strong. Due to
cyclical plummet in total spending on Australian production, sales of goods and services are
depressed causing the level of unsold business stocks to rise. Eventually, firms decides to cut output
levels to prevent surplus/overproduction. As a result, demand

Potential Solutions For High Youth Unemployment
Question How can the high levels of What are potential solutions for high youth unemployment in
Australia be solved, and what are its implications on inequality for young Australians? I.
Introduction High levels of unemployment have many negative effects, including rising inequality,
which is a major issue in developed economies such as Australia (REF). Income, and wealth
inequality are the two main types of inequality examined in economics. Income Distribution Income
distribution refers to how the total income of a nation is distributed between the population. An

Economies attempt to maintain unemployment as low as economically sustainable (referred to as
the natural rate of unemployment), because high unemployment creates several issues in an
economy (REF). Both unemployment and underemployment are heavily linked to high levels of
inequality, as such young Australians are more likely to experience inequality (REF). The focus of
this inquiry will be on inequality and unemployment in young Australians. II. Issues High
unemployment (and underemployment) have several costs on Australian society. One of the key
impacts of high unemployment are the heightened levels of inequality (REF). As young Australians
experience higher unemployment (and underemployment) than the average Australian, they also
experience significantly higher levels of inequality (REF). Economy High levels of youth
unemployment (and underemployment), leads to the economy functioning inefficiently (functioning
below the Production Possibility Frontier [PPF]) (REF). Furthermore, a high rate of unemployment
means that young Australians lack the appropriate skills required in the workforce, thus more time
and money is required from the employer to train the young Australians to be able to participate in
the workplace (REF). High levels of youth unemployment result in individuals possessing lower
disposable incomes, consequently there is lower aggregate demand. As demand for labour is derived
demand, the high levels of youth unemployment will result

Unemployment Rate In Michigan
Do your parents ever ask you to get a job? Do you wish you could have a way to earn money? This

support for work worthy teens, this problem is certainly solvable. For teenagers it is difficult to get a
job because most businesses won't hire them. Comparing the unemployment rate in Michigan for

many stores? In McMillon's response, he said that because they want a smarter business. They want
to expand their business by cutting some that are not earning profit or earning less profit. This is

Instead of building more prisons, the National Center of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse at
Columbia University found a less costly and more effective way to reduce recidivism. They found
that reconnecting ex–offenders to the world of appropriate employment is essential to maintaining

Managerial Approach Towards The Aged Residential Care
Introduction
The main concept of the case study points on the managerial approach towards the aged residential
care (ARC) services to guarantee consistent quality care practice by means of their migrant care
workers. Migrant workers are being utilised since the number of residents within the ARC are
rapidly increasing, thus the management of migrant workers is one of the critical factors into
gaining the desired quality service for residents. Managers are in charge for the quality of care in the
ARC sector, however, there are concerns that require attention which can be challenging to manage.
According to Ngocha–Chaderopa and Boon (2015), the issues of quality care delivery focus on
these three segments: language and communication challenges, racism and discrimination against
migrant care workers, and underemployment. In view of the study, while communication limitations
such as accent and speed of language can be resolved by way of training, racism and
underemployment on the other hand tend to be more challenging to manage through common
human resource management methods. Carers in such nursing homes believed that management did
not give careful consideration to the improvement of strong connections between associates
(Timonen & Doyle, 2010), mainly because of these concerns that are formed in a diverse setting. In
addition, the impact of employee well–being (i.e. psychological, physical and social) provides a
significant role to quality service. The way care workers are

The Institutional Transformation Of A Dictator 's Worst...
A dictator's worst nightmare is their own people because the transformation of institutions can
threaten a dictator's grip over a nation, either leading to their brutal crackdown on citizens or the
forced removal of their regime. Citizens who are eager for change can be the death knell of an
oppressive regime. For Tunisia, former president Zine el–Abidine Ben Ali, like many other rulers,
eventually faced this threat. In 2011, the culmination of oppression and brutality led to the self–
immolation of the young Tunisian street vendor, Mohamed Bouazizi. This triggered a multitude of
protests that spread not only throughout Tunisia, but to other nations which came to be known as the
Arab Spring, and to Tunisia, the Tunisian or Jasmine Revolution. This paper examines the
institutional transformations that occurred in Tunisia in respects to why the change took place and
how it has affected the country. Specifically, Ben Ali's authoritative rule, what problems were
associated with the transition, and the aftermath of the revolution. To the world's surprise, a
revolution beginning in Tunisia seemed quite unlikely since comparatively, their government did not
deprive its citizens of basic rights to the point of extreme oppression. This was in large part due to
Tunisia's economy being reliant upon tourism, and because a lack of freedom would deter tourists
thereby harming the economy, Ben Ali had to allow people more freedom than he would have
preferred. For a dictator, these new

The Role Of Underemployment In The United States
The American government has made dramatic changes in its role in the economy in the past. During
the great depression unemployment soared to twentyfive percent and the government was forced to
take a more hands on approach in directing the economy. Today, America still has an unemployment
compensation system, social security, and other services that comprise the american safety net.
Since the early 2000's there has a steady increase in unemployment for recent college graduates and
an increase in the number of people who consider themselves underemployed. However, according
to Derek Thompson, this may not be such a severe issue as to require government intervention.
Thompson acknowledges some discouraging statistics such as the fact that,

occupation he chose for himself some years ago. It seems as if Willy is doing well for himself as
well as his family from any outsider, however, what happens behind the scenes is a completely
different story. Constantly borrowing from a fellow friend Willy finds himself in a black hole of
debt. Arthur Miller's given situation of Willy Loman's life is somewhat of an ugly truth to many
people around the world. Everyday life for people seems normal for most people, however, the
world population goes through problems just as Willy did throughout the play. From fighting for
what is considered the American dream, trying to live up to a more successful person, losing a job or
even being in debt. The ugly truth Arthur Miller defines throughout the play can be compared
several different ways when it comes to Willy Loman's life. For instance, one theme throughout the
story is the American dream. It is the one thing that all people wish to have. The American dream
can be things such as "buying a home, getting married, having children, getting a college degree and
retiring" (Kane). Although most of these things are actually common and relatively easy to come by
when you are an American, "21 percent feel the American dream is an antiquated concept" (Kane).

even worse than it looks. There are many factors in addition to the unemployment rate alone that are
going to prolong the recovery of the job market. In this paper, "underemployment" is defined and

their fault for depending on their manager and not taking the initiative to improve their skills and set
themselves up for the future. I have several friends that refused to go to college because they said
that they could get a decent job without a degree. They are those people that sat in the same position

Underemployment In America
The problem of unemployment could be solved through the welfare system. Nationwide, we need to
take a look at both unemployment, as well as underemployment. Underemployment plagues the
U.S. and is extremely detrimental towards the overall health and well being of the economy as a
whole, and for the economy of the individual.
The impact that this has on America is huge because there are people who feed off the system or
people that can't get out of the poverty system. What we want to do is redirect the funding and put it
to a system that will work. So overall this makes it very difficult for middle class to support all of
this.

The Recovery From The 2008 / 09 Recession

unanticipated considering the slower recovery in output. Trends in underemployment, self–

According to World Without Work by Derek Thompson, the city lost a total of 50,000 jobs, calling
for a regional depression (Thompson, 2015). The result from the city's dramatic unemployment rate
was a decline in mental health, culture, civic spirit, and local identity (Thompson, 2015). However,
in worse cases, depression, spousal abuse, and suicide (Thompson, 2015). According to John Russo,
Youngstown State professor said that because of the lack of stable jobs, Youngstown citizens found
themselves unable to advance their lives, thus having a decline in mental health (Thompson, 2015).
Youngstown's current situation symbolizes a decline in mental health and a lack of identity because
of the increase of unemployment. The situation in Youngstown depicts that the lost of jobs or
unemployment significantly affects many people through ways like a decline in mental health and
relationships, essentially putting many individuals in an identity crisis. In order to combat the
negative effects of unemployment, a pre–training program that focuses on emotional support and
skill development should be established. When unemployed individuals have a supportive
background to fall back upon, they will endure a lower chance for a decline in mental health (Gore,
1978). Susan Gore, a PhD professor of Sociology in the University of Massachusetts at Boston,

labor forces of Apple's going global? Apple is not only a known brand, but also a reliable one. Many
consider them, to be an electrical giant. The fact that Apple decided to take its company global
created both advantages and disadvantages, both local and overseas. Here are some of the pros that
are associated with Apple's decision to go global. Apple created 700,000 jobs in overseas countries,
decreased the overseas unemployment rate, decreased labor costs, increased profit margins, and
productivity to meet high demands for their products. All of this was possible because they entered
into a more flexible, diligent, and industrialized workforce in the overseas market. However, despite
all the good that came from this decision, there was also some bad. 20,000 jobs in the U.S. were
permanently lost, which led to an increase in the U.S. unemployment rate. The loss of these jobs can
potentially generate negative buzz with the media, and Apple can also be faced with language and

The Impact Of Automation And Millennial Unemployment

  • 1. The Impact Of Automation And Millennial Unemployment Automation and Millennial Unemployment Since the industrial revolution, automation in workplaces has steadily increased. However, with a sudden boom of technological advances, people have created machines that can perform tasks more efficiently – and arguably better – than humans. Because millennials, defined by the United States Census Bureau as the generation born between 1982 and 2000 (United States Census Bureau, 2017), either just entered into the workforce or will first be entering the workforce in the next couple years, they seem the most vulnerable to automation taking over their jobs. Mark Zuckerberg, entrepreneur and founder of Facebook, said " [the millennial] generation will have to deal with tens of millions of jobs replaced by automation like self–driving cars and trucks" (Zuckerberg, 2017). Danielle Paquette, journalist for the Washington Post, believes that no single job is safe from automation; "every job has some component a robot could theoretically handle" (Paquette 2017). Both of the previous statements create a question about how automation will affect the un– and underemployment of the millennial generation. The risk of either un– or underemployment for millennials depends largely on the type of job, as well as each a person's degrees and other qualifications. By delving into the problem of automation in workplaces, maybe people can find a way to make the benefits of automation outweigh the consequences. In order to for people to understand why millennials are especially vulnerable in regards to workplace automation, they must understand what "millennial" means. While the United States Census Bureau does provide the ages that represent millennials (United States Census Bureau), people typically tend to consider those who are currently between about twenty and thirty years of age as millennials. People in their twenties are either still in school, or just leaving universities, graduate schools, or any other type of professional training, and need to start looking for jobs that can lead to potential careers. A large amount of unemployed Americans includes millennials, forty percent specifically (Goodman, 2015). Considering that the workforce consists of people roughly between the ages of ... • 2. Unemployment : Unemployment And Unemployment INTRODUCTION What is unemployment? Unemployment happens when a man who is effectively looking for employment is not able to find some kind of employment. Unemployment is regularly utilised as a measure of the economy's wellbeing. The most regularly referred to gauge of unemployment is the unemployment rate. This is the quantity of unemployed persons divided by the quantity of individuals in the work force. The unemployed are those individuals capable, accessible and willing to work at the going wage yet can 't discover work in spite of a want to work. How is unemployment measured? Measuring unemployment precisely is made difficult due to improper facts. Not all cases of unemployment are recorded, and a few records of unemployment may not be exact. Since the unemployed are qualified for benefits, a few people may work, yet do not disclose it, and take advantage. On the other hand, numerous unemployed may not try to inform the authorities, and this unemployment goes unrecorded. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducts a monthly Labour Force Survey. This family unit survey is intended to create key facts of unemployment (and employment) from a sample of more or less 56,000 individuals. The study 's meaning of unemployment matches to universal benchmarks and rules. According to ABS unemployed persons are characterised as all persons aged 15 years and over who were not working amid the reference week and: had effectively searched for work in the past four ... • 3. Unemployment And Underemployment Of College Graduates SECONDARY RESEARCH FINDINGS Unemployment and Underemployment of College Graduates "The Class of 2014: The Weak Economy Is Idling Too Many Young Graduates," published on the Economic Policy Institute website, reported that the trend of the labor market would remain for ten to fifteen years (Shierholz, Davis, & Kimball, 2014, Para 10). The report showed that unemployment rate for college graduates was high, and college graduates had jobs requiring less college educations with low pay. Average pay was 7.7 percent lower than the great recession period 5 years ago (Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 9). Shierholz et al. (2014) explained that the great recession was not the factor for such a trend. With the weak market trend, employers did not have motivation to hire new college graduates (Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 23). In 2014, unemployment and underemployment rate for college graduates indicated 8.5 percent and 16.8 percent respectively (Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 4). New college graduates have relatively difficult time to get jobs. The report also identified that the employment rate was different among different race and ethnicity. Latino and African American's unemployment rate showed higher than White (Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 4). The report indicated that less jobs required general intelligence associated intelligence quotient (Shierholz et al., 2014, Para 4). Employers may demand a new skill set. • 4. What Is The Csr Analysis Of Sappi Sappi – Inspired by Life Background Information on Sappi Sappi, founded in 1936, is a company known worldwide for producing paper, paper pulp and wood pulp which is converted, by further development, into other products. Businesses convert the Sappi produce into items or products which they trade to make a profit, examples of these items include household goods, textiles, magazines, books, tissues etc. In South Africa, they have plantations in Kwa–Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga. Why I chose to conduct a CSR analysis on Sappi I specifically choose to conduct a CSR analysis on Sappi because they are a company who provides us with a resource we use daily. Although Sappi produces paper, and deforestation is an ever increasing issue on our planet, Sappi have come up with solutions to be environmentally friendly, for example, their production of Triple Green Paper which incorporates 60% of the unused fibres in sugar cane extraction. This reduces the amount of trees that are cut down. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another reason as to why I chose to do a CSR analysis on Sappi is because majority of their Corporate Social Responsibility projects target South Africa, mainly because we are a third world country. Sappi involves themselves in a number of different projects which are aimed at entirely different aspects of need, such as education, lack of skill, the environment etc. and is not focused entirely on one socio–economic issue. • 5. The Pros And Cons Of Crime People make a choice to commit crimes based on a rational choice where they weighing the benefits and costs of a crime versus the negative aspects derived from punishment (Lee & Holoviak, 2006). The costs of associated with punishment for committing a crime in include loss of opportunities for legitimate income. Physical imprisonment, and possibly guilt (Lee & Holoviak, 2006). The potential costs of punishment increase as the probability of getting caught or convicted increase (Lee & Holoviak, 2006). An unemployed teenager is more likely to commit crime than an older high– income person because the latter stands to lose more (Lee & Holoviak, 2006). Studies on the relationship between crime and unemployment are usually weak, but Raphael and Ebmer suggest that this is due to not account for the abuse of alcohol by those who are unemployed (Raphael & Ebmer, 1998). Taking into account alcohol abuse, those who are unemployed generally are more likely to commit crimes of survival (Raphael & Ebmer, 1998). Their study from 1970 to 1997 looked at a state level looked seven felony crimes, murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larcenty–theft, and motor vehicle theft (Raphael & Ebmer, 1998). On average the study found that for every 100,000 persons across the fifty states, there was 2,788 crimes of larceny and 9 murders (Raphael & Ebmer). • 6. Crime and Poverty in Richmond, Virginia Unemployment in the city limits further feeds the belly of poverty. Unemployment rates for Richmond in August 2013 were 8.2% (United States Department of Labor, 2013). These rates represent only those that are documented as unemployed and does not consider the "under employed" as they may be working but not getting paid for a full work week. These unemployment rates would likely be higher if they were accurate and all inclusive of the unemployed in Richmond. The unemployment rate for the entire state of Virginia was reported at 5.8% in August 2013 (United States Department of Labor). The unemployment rate is related to education. There are not enough good paying jobs to support those who did not finish basic high school. There are not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Living in communities that are run down, neglected and forgotten takes a toll on all members of the community. This is especially true when residents witness new properties being erected around the city as their own neighborhoods are deemed "ghettos" and not receiving the investment necessary for improvements. Many of the low income housing that is available to city residents aren't the most desirable properties as they may have structural deficiencies, lead paint, rats and roaches running amuck. Many older properties also do not have adequately functioning heat or hot water availability. The housing projects also do not have air conditioning. On hot days, having no cool break in addition to all the other negative social factors, this can be a deadly combination that may perpetuate frustrations and ultimately lead to violence. It is no secret that the city of Richmond has a major problem with drugs and drug dealing. Where there is demand, there will be supply. The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) is the local agency in charge of all operations related to Richmond's public housing communities. In an effort to fight crime and drug dealing in these communities, the RRHA has developed strict policies that ban anyone with drug convictions from their private properties. Although this may appear to be a great crime fighting strategy, we cannot ignore the fact that crime just doesn't go away because of laws or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Income Underemployment Essay Measurement of Underemployment Due to limitations in data which were inevitable in using a survey not specifically designed to measure underemployment among the Ukrainian population, this study relies on modified metrics. Lack of information about hours worked forced the elimination of an "hours–underemployed" classification. Unlike previous studies which determined income– underemployment and skill–underemployment by means of comparison to some objective standard (Jensen & Slack, 2003; find others), this study utilizes subjective self–reported information. Subjective measures have been shown to better predict psychological outcomes than objective alternatives (Maynard & Feldman, 2011 as cited in Allan et al., 2017), and the particular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Only those who had at least started higher education (levels 5–8) could qualify as income– underemployed by reporting that they were unable to afford food (N = 64). Skill–underemployment was determined through a similarly subjective self–report of labor underutilization. Respondents were asked: "In the past 12 months, have you experienced stress because your abilities were under– utilized at work?" Those who answered yes were automatically categorized as being skill– underemployed (N= 78). A third underemployment category was added to accommodate for the absence of hours–underemployed and to create a more comprehensive study. The previously mentioned concept of status–underemployment was adopted and implemented with a subjective metric provided by the survey data: the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status ("MacArthur SES & Health Network | Research," n.d.). Respondents were presented an image of a ladder and asked to mark an "X" on the rung that indicates their position in Ukraine in terms of education, money, and occupational respect. Scores ranged from one to ten and a mean status–ranking was calculated for each of the eight aforementioned education levels. If an individual's score was less than one standard deviation below the mean for their respective education level, they were categorized as status–underemployed (N = 54). An initial measurement preceding the variables outlined above included more objective measures of underemployment that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Underemployment In Canada Underemployment Underemployment, though less often studied, is also a common issue among refugees. Defined as "working fewer hours than a person normally works" and the "underutilization of a person's skills, qualifications, or experience", underemployment is harder to measure and are often self–reported (Scott 2015). Krahn et al. (2000) conducted a series interviews with over 525 adult refugees settled in Alberta between 1992 and 1997 to determine the prevalence of underemployment among refugee populations. It found that although over 82% of refugees interviewed had held paying jobs after their arrival in Canada, "it is clear that many had not found steady employment", with over 28% of the interviewees employed part–time (66). (2007) attributes disparities in income between skilled immigrants and refugees to the fact that "refugees are admitted [...] primarily on humanitarian rather than economic grounds", less concerned about "their ability to establish themselves [and their] economic potential" and more about "their need for Canada's protection" (18). Yu argues that because of this, refugee populations tend to be less educated and possess lower levels of language skills, leading to lower levels of income. Indeed, Krahn et. al (2000) found that only 43% of the refugees interviewed has received post–secondary credentials at home, compared to the Alberta average of 49% (p.63). Meanwhile, DeVoretz et al. • 9. A Critical Analysis Of Public Education US society reflects systems and institutions that act in concert with one another to maintain a class infrastructure that in large part finds its roots in race. A critical analysis of public education lends discussion to African, and Hispanic Americans having a close relationship to chronically failing schools; an evaluation of the American welfare system reveals a disproportionate minority representation, a discussion of public health crises note an overabundance of minority emergence, and a deep look into the criminal justice system uncovers a similar, and potentially even more ruinous fate for minorities. For example, almost one in three (32.2%) of young black men in the age group 20–29 is under criminal justice supervision on any given day –– in prison or jail, on probation or parole (Mauer and Huling (1995), moreover, in recent years, African American women have experienced the greatest increase in criminal justice supervision of all demographic groups, with their rate of criminal justice supervision rising by 78% from 1989–2004. While these sobering statistics point to a bias by police and the interworkings of the criminal justice system toward minorities, they also beg the question: are minorities committing more crime than their majority counterparts? The New Century Foundations offer in its study that: Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery. Further adding that Hispanics commit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Changes During The Agricultural Community Essay Due to changes in the agricultural community there was in early nineteenth century East Anglia a significant situation of underemployment within the agricultural labourers' community. At this time it was also being recognised that there was an ever increasing growth in population; for instance: 'several landowners and journalists attributed the problems of rural society to the size of the labourers' families and to their tendency to marry at an early age.' It has been suggested that the average size of the agricultural labourers' household was 4.9. This population rise in turn put pressure on the supply of housing, resulting in many agricultural labouring families living in small, squalid and overcrowded cottages, many consisting of just one room, with no ceiling, just the bare roof tiles and a clay floor. The building itself would have been constructed from unbound stone or wattle and mud. It can be suggested that: The vegetable substances mixed with the mud to make it bind, rapidly decompose, leaving the walls porous. The earth of the floor is full of vegetable matter [...] it is peculiarly liable to damp.' It can be suggested therefore that the growth of population, coupled with the deterioration of living standards within agricultural communities of East Anglia contributed towards the pauperisation of the agricultural labourers and their families. The aforementioned growth of population within the agricultural communities of East Anglia led to an ever increasing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While a typical international student might save money by sharing a room with their friends, so that they might pay only $50 – $80 a week per person living in suburb areas. Transportation and food might cost up to $70 a week per person, if people buy food and cook by themselves. Plus, after my graduating, I might find a company to sponsor me. Thus, there is no working limit. I might go to work more and save more for my plan as well. Therefore, this saving target is achievable. C. I did not originally expect much out of the book with its sort of corny pictures of cheese and story about made up people and situation. Once I began to read it I realized it was a little more complex than a mouse going through a maze to obtain cheese. The beginning starts out with a group of former classmates gathered around discussing their current jobs and such. Whatever it may be there is always a road to take you their. The maze alone can best be described as the journey one must take to reach their "cheese" or something a person wants in life. The maze is very symbolic in that it represents the hardships and journey people must make to attain achievement. Not every turn leads to success, that is why people must be able to adapt and know whats around the corner when they are trying to achieve their goals. The three characters that seem to reach the "cheese" every time are Scurry and Sniff. This is because they keep things simple and each have attributes that lead them to reaching their cheese. Later on Haw also reaches his goal, but only after he comes to the realization that he shouldn't be repeating the same steps over and over and expect different results. Doing this would lead him to insanity, something his friend Hem is familiar with. He makes numerous points including how boasting about busyness takes the form of a complaint. He insults those who voluntarily take on obligations by remarking that they are obsessed with always being occupied. However, the basis for such a conclusion is founded on only a few examples of individuals who were negatively affected by the burden of work. In Kreider's opinion it is wasteful to be busy all the time because life is too short to work more than 5 hours per day and not spend enough time in one's happy place. What is your happy place? Picture it and stay there for a while letting your thoughts flow. Notice that your thinking becomes more positive and somewhat out of reach. Next, imagine a life with minimal stress that includes little to no work and much enjoyment; now you 're floating back to reality because that type of life is not in the grasps of most. Similarly, Kreider writes his article as if most people have plenty of time to waste, and to enjoy themselves, as he has. Kreider's overall point that people keep themselves busy to escape the feelings of emptiness is both ignorant and a reflection of his narrow perspective of the world. His opinion that people feel apprehensive when not working, along with the fact that most people wouldn't be content living the lifestyle Kreider is promoting, plus his support towards the propositions of full unemployment and a ... • 20. The Impact Of Neoclassical Economics On The Economy Essay Neoclassical Economics is an attempt to restore some of the principles that Adam Smith, a pioneer for capitalist markets, advocated for in his Classical Economic theory. Smith suggested that minimal intervention should be required regarding government policy as the laws of supply and demand will be self–correcting. John Maynard Keynes was an important figure that worked to apply fiscal policy that would remedy an economic depression. Keynes's idea of fiscal policy is the means by which government adjusts its spending levels and tax rates to monitor and influence the economy. Further, Keynes is known as the father of "Mixed Economy", in which both the private sector (households and privately owned businesses) and public sector (government) have an active and important role in the economy. He argued that in a capitalist economy, the government would have a direct response to where in a business cycle the economy was at any particular time–Borrow to spend in a Recession or Bust, and spend only to the level of revenue collected during a period of growth or Booms. Milton Friedman, an American economist, believed strongly in a neoclassical, one– directional approach to monetary policy, where the Federal Reserve should limit monetary policy to increasing M1 (primary money supply) at a consistent rate, slightly higher than the birth rate, in order to keep economic growth at effective levels. With higher unemployment and underemployment rates along with a student debt, there will be higher rates of depression amongst young adults and that might in turn contribute to a higher suicide rate. In fact if unemployment stretches out to a period of 2 years or longer we see the following results: * Household savings were significantly diminished after two years of unemployment with 33% of those surveyed using this resource most heavily during the second year (Sales, 1995, p. 489) * Targeted government assistance programs for poor households (food stamps, utility assistance, and Medicaid) became mainstays for increasing numbers of households. The method used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for determination of unemployment is closely based from the guidelines of the International Labour Organization. Monthly, the ABS conducts the Labour Force Survey from a sample of appropriately 0.33 per cent of the population aged 15 years and over. A person is considered unemployed if he is looking for a job, on a temporary layoff, or is waiting to start a new job. This excludes institutionalised people, overseas residents, members of permanent defence forces and certain diplomatic personnel. (ABS, Labour Statistics: Concepts, Sources and Methods, 2013) Generally, the unemployment rate is a good indicator of labour market conditions. When unemployment is dropping, often this is the result of more spending and faster economic growth. (Morris, 2012) Causes of Unemployment There are two main types of factors affecting the level of unemployment in Australia. When the national expenditure (aggregate demand) and production (gross domestic product) levels are frail as occurs during recessions or depressions, weak aggregate demand–side conditions happens causing cyclical unemployment. It vanishes when the economy is strong. Due to cyclical plummet in total spending on Australian production, sales of goods and services are depressed causing the level of unsold business stocks to rise. • 33. Arthur Miller 's Death Of A Salesman The American In Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, the main character is Willy Loman a lifelong traveling salesman. Willy is in his early sixties and there is no doubt he has had a long life with the occupation he chose for himself some years ago. It seems as if Willy is doing well for himself as well as his family from any outsider, however, what happens behind the scenes is a completely different story. Constantly borrowing from a fellow friend Willy finds himself in a black hole of debt. Arthur Miller's given situation of Willy Loman's life is somewhat of an ugly truth to many people around the world. Everyday life for people seems normal for most people, however, the world population goes through problems just as Willy did throughout the play. From fighting for what is considered the American dream, trying to live up to a more successful person, losing a job or even being in debt. The ugly truth Arthur Miller defines throughout the play can be compared several different ways when it comes to Willy Loman's life. For instance, one theme throughout the story is the American dream. It is the one thing that all people wish to have. The American dream can be things such as "buying a home, getting married, having children, getting a college degree and retiring" (Kane). Although most of these things are actually common and relatively easy to come by when you are an American, "21 percent feel the American dream is an antiquated concept" (Kane). This statistic shows how people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Unemployment and People Underemployment Tiffany Allen BUS640 Prof Michael Blagg September 19, 2011 Executive Summary The down turn of the economy has stirred up some issues that most people were not prepared to deal with. The unemployment rate is at a petrifying rate and the worst part is that it is even worse than it looks. There are many factors in addition to the unemployment rate alone that are going to prolong the recovery of the job market. In this paper, "underemployment" is defined and explained in terms of rates. Reasons why people are underemployed and how they got there are discussed. Why do people fear underemployment? What are some things that people can do to get themselves out of the rut of being underemployed? What are some ways to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They have lost touch with reality a little bit because the position that they are working, they are getting over paid for. They will be the first people to be laid off because they can be replaced for a lot less pay and since it is a low skill job, they are easily replaceable. They will soon realize when applying at other companies for the same job, that they were over paid and are going to have to take a pay cut now. They are still considered underemployed in this situation and in my opinion, it is their fault for depending on their manager and not taking the initiative to improve their skills and set themselves up for the future. I have several friends that refused to go to college because they said that they could get a decent job without a degree. They are those people that sat in the same position and collected raises over the years without taking on any job enhancement because they prefer the easy way out. Well these individuals are now very underemployed and are working an additional side job in restaurant waiting tables trying to make ends meet. It is sad because they had every opportunity in the past to not have to go through this. Their employer offered tuition reimbursement and was often hiring in upper level positions that they could move up to, but they didn't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Underemployment In America The problem of unemployment could be solved through the welfare system. Nationwide, we need to take a look at both unemployment, as well as underemployment. Underemployment plagues the U.S. and is extremely detrimental towards the overall health and well being of the economy as a whole, and for the economy of the individual. The impact that this has on America is huge because there are people who feed off the system or people that can't get out of the poverty system. What we want to do is redirect the funding and put it to a system that will work. So overall this makes it very difficult for middle class to support all of this. The impact is is global because the US is one of the worlds strongest/biggest nations and if our economy is very weak ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Recovery From The 2008 / 09 Recession 1. Introduction The recovery from the 2008/09 recessions though weak has seen increases in headline employment, implying that the labour market recovery is quite impressive and unanticipated considering the slower recovery in output. Trends in underemployment, self– employment, youth–unemployment (caused by displacement effect ) and insecure forms of working (zero–hour contracts1) have been obscured by headline statistic (Boyd, 2014). This is so because employers rather than lay–off workers decide to fall wages and/or cut working hours (labour hoarding1), thereby resulting in deteriorating employment quality and decreased economic security of jobs. This culminates in underemployment, leaving unemployment relatively constant with falling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2. Underemployment and its three aspects Hours Based Underemployment This aspect is described as "hours–constrained" underemployment in which people desire to work for more hours but are unable to. Figure 2.1: UK Time–related underemployment rate (%) Own Computations Data: International Labour Organization (2014) The figure shows that the number of people who are in employment but want to work more hours has risen markedly since the recession. This obviously includes part–time workers. Figure 2.2: Full–time and part–time workers (UK) 2012–2014 – seasonally adjusted Own Computations Data: International Labour Organization (2014) Year–on– year percentage change is positive for all categories with "self–employed people working part–time" showing the greatest increase at 7.9%, followed by "self–employed people working full–time" 6.1%. This obviously shows an increase in self–employment since recovery. What is clear from the figure above is that part–time workers have continued to increase marginally in post–recession UK. • 37. Individuals Benefit From The Structure Of Work Such As Individuals benefit from the structure of work such as through social contact, collective purpose, status, and activity (Machin & Creed, 2003). However, unemployed individuals lack those benefits and are more susceptible to a decline in mental health, leading to a deprivation state and distress (Belle & Bullock, 2009). Gregory C. Murphy and James A. Athanasou, professors of the Health Sciences and Educational department in the Latrobe University, Australia report that job loss is correlated to a dramatic increase in distress symptoms (Murphy & Athanasou,1999; Jahoda, 1982). This increase of distress symptoms affects individuals by making it difficult for them to acquire jobs (The Urban Institute, 2013). The Urban Institute, an organization ... The result from the city's dramatic unemployment rate was a decline in mental health, culture, civic spirit, and local identity (Thompson, 2015). However, in worse cases, depression, spousal abuse, and suicide (Thompson, 2015). According to John Russo, Youngstown State professor said that because of the lack of stable jobs, Youngstown citizens found themselves unable to advance their lives, thus having a decline in mental health (Thompson, 2015). Youngstown's current situation symbolizes a decline in mental health and a lack of identity because of the increase of unemployment. The situation in Youngstown depicts that the lost of jobs or unemployment significantly affects many people through ways like a decline in mental health and relationships, essentially putting many individuals in an identity crisis. In order to combat the negative effects of unemployment, a pre–training program that focuses on emotional support and skill development should be established. When unemployed individuals have a supportive background to fall back upon, they will endure a lower chance for a decline in mental health (Gore, 1978). Susan Gore, a PhD professor of Sociology in the University of Massachusetts at Boston, investigated the effects of social support and health consequences in the unemployed at rural and ... • 38. Pros And Cons For Local And Overseas Labor Forces Of... Introduction This case incident is about Apple going global. Apple went from having 100% of its production conducted in the United States to only having 10%. When this took place, it had quite a negative impact on the U.S. economy and the American people. The context of this paper would go into more details as I answer the questions. 1–15. What are the pros and cons for local and overseas labor forces of Apple's going global? Apple is not only a known brand, but also a reliable one. Many consider them, to be an electrical giant. The fact that Apple decided to take its company global created both advantages and disadvantages, both local and overseas. Here are some of the pros that are associated with Apple's decision to go global. Apple created 700,000 jobs in overseas countries, decreased the overseas unemployment rate, decreased labor costs, increased profit margins, and productivity to meet high demands for their products. All of this was possible because they entered into a more flexible, diligent, and industrialized workforce in the overseas market. However, despite all the good that came from this decision, there was also some bad. 20,000 jobs in the U.S. were permanently lost, which led to an increase in the U.S. unemployment rate. The loss of these jobs can potentially generate negative buzz with the media, and Apple can also be faced with language and cultural barriers in the overseas market. What are the potential political implications for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
