The Big Fish Film Analysis
The Big Fish is a 2003 fantasy/ comedy–drama directed by the director of popular movies such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton. The
Big Fish takes us into the life of Edward Bloom (Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney), and the feud he holds with his son Will Bloom (Billy
Crudup). Will's feud with his dad stems from his dad's overexagerated stories and gaps between fantasy and reality. Will goes with his wife, Sandra
Bloom (Alison Lohman), to find out once and for all the truth about his father's life. During the narration of Edward's life, the movie slips into a
fantasy world where we witness the abnormal and the exdrodanary, and sit on the edge of our seats as we anticipate the ending of the phenomenal fairy
tale. The fist main element

At New Melones Reservoir, despite the continuing snow melt, the water level dropped another foot last week. The water clarity is good and the
temperature is slowly coming up, now averaging 76 to 81–degrees. Trout are showing signs of schooling over deep water and feeding on shad
minnows. Trollers have been finding trout at 40 to 60 feet with Speedy Shiners, Needlefish, and ExCel lures. Night fishermen have been doing well by
anchoring over fairly deep water and lowering their light to about 20 feet. This attracts plankton, which in turn, attracts shad, which will attract larger
fish. Live minnows and nightcrawlers are choice baits. The kokanee numbers may be down, but the quality is good with some going 15 to 18 inches.
Bladed lures may work well in deeper water as they create vibration which will attract fish. Scented corn on each hook is important. Big trout winner
at Glory Hole Sports was, again, Bob James, of Murphys, with a 2–pound rainbow caught at 55 feet in the main lake. Big catfish winner was John
Tennant, of Twain Harte, with an 11
–pound, 15–ounce fish caught with sardine bait in the main lake. Bass fishing is good for those who specialize in
that type of fishing. Hayden Lee, of Angels Camp, recently caught a 10 pound Largemouth Bass on a topwater lure and he had no net in the boat. He
and a friend were able to boat the fish for photos before release.

Cinematic Techniques In Big Fish
Big Fish is a film that jumps between past and present to relay the fantastical stories and adventures of Edward Bloom. This film presents these stories
through various flashbacks as his son, Will Bloom, tries to piece together the man his father claims to be. As the flashbacks unfold, stunning
cinematography, lighting and colours are used to create beautiful and enchanting scenes that really complete the movie. The sequence I chose to
analyse is the town scene in which Edward comes to the realisation that he does not belong in Spectre, and needs to leave whilst he still can. Spectre is
a mysterious town that Edward unexpectedly stumbles upon after leaving his hometown. Everything there appears to be perfect with the overly
enthusiastic characters, grass–paved streets and the "best pie you've ever had".... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Edward approaches the dancing characters, there are numerous, exposed spotted lights above and around the scene. These are used to connote
natural light, which makes the people and their surroundings glow in a bright, vivid way; this glowing effect gives the scene a hazy, dreamlike
quality, which further adds to the surreal and magical elements of the film. Spectre represents heaven on earth for Edward, and the lighting choices
reflect this well. As it becomes evident to Edward that he has to leave Spectre and he begins to back away from the scene, the enchanting glow that
surrounds the town appears to become muted, and as soon as he has withdrawn from the spotlights, fades completely. This reveals how the dream is
quickly disappearing as Edward is coming back to reality. By using these effects, Rousselot shows how even though something may seem perfect, if
you take a step back and look at the whole picture, it may not be as flawless and extraordinary as you once

Big Fish
"So this is a tall tale?"
"Well, it's not a short one..."
Stories are our essence of life. They grow and change with us. They allow us to reconstruct the past, and put our slant on things. They don't' have make
sense, and they don't all have to be fact. That's what kind of story this is. Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton, is a heartwarming, comedic film, with many
twists and turns. It explores the world of an eccentric father, while telling his life story. And so, our story begins.
It is Edward's myths, of course, that really reveal the man he is. Tim Burton mixes tender heartfelt drama with zany, outrageous scenes, skipping from
past to present, while keeping the tension alive.

This is the film's (fish) hook, and once it sinks itself in, it carries you on a journey that is unexpected, enchanting, outrageous, and genuinely moving.
Edward's encounter with a witch (early in the film) plants a question in the audience's mind that we know must be answered by film's end. When this
is finally resolved (along with a number of other things), the result is remarkable. I have rarely seen a collection of images that have stirred my
emotions so much.
In the end of the film, Will ends up taking on Edwards abilities by telling his father one of his own stories on his deathbed. So the film came full
circle and Will realized the importance of story–telling to his father, and to himself.
I did have a few problems with this film. The first would be the overly exaggerated southern accent it tends to take away from a few of the scenes
because you're more focused on how they talk rather than what they're saying. Also I can see how very few can relate on a personal level to this story.
But either way this film breathes new life into story–telling and gives it a new spin.
This is one of the most pleasant surprises to come out of the body of 2003 films. I never expected this movie to reach me so deeply, but it has, and I
imagine that many who treasure the magic of storytelling will feel the same way. In less capable hands, Big Fish could be seen as a liar's a life. In
trying to reshape the world around his fantasy,

Rhetorical Analysis Of Big Fish In Troubled Waters
Author's have three main purposes in writing to persuade, inform and to entertain. The author uses text structures to explain his or her purpose. "Big
Fish in Troubled Waters" by Stephen Ornes informs you that our oceans and water life are being overfished resulting in a decrease infish. The author
uses cause and effect to show the population of our fish decrease its numbers. The article states the cause and effect by saying "the numbers of big fish
predators decreased slowly. In 1970, their populations started to drop. Around that time, fishing ships began using new tools that led to catching more
fish. The numbers have been falling quickly ever since." (paragraph 5) In this

The film Big Fish directed by Tim Burton has a lot of phenomenal quotes that relate to the film and real life that get you analyzing and thinking
about them."That the more difficult something became, the more rewarding it was in the end." said by Edward Bloom, will be the first quote

major role in the film, but in real life this means that if you choose the more difficult path you will get more in return for you work than if you take
the smooth easy route. Therefore "Fate has a cruel way of circling around on you." Said by Edward Bloom is the second quote to be analyzed. This

The Odyssey In Tim Burton's 2003 Film Big Fish
In Tim Burton's 2003 film Big Fish, Edward Bloom leaves his small town of Ashton and lives a life full of adventure. From befriending a giant,
working at the circus, getting trapped in a mysterious town, and robbing a bank, Bloom lives a life of mythic proportions. Many of his trials and
tribulations are centered around the love of his life Sandra, and returning to her after he is drafted into the Korean War. In the final lines of the movie,
Edward's son William Bloom states, "A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he
becomes immortal" ("Big Fish"). Odysseus, the main character of Homer's The Odyssey, also went through a myriad of outlandish obstacles to return to
Penelope, and his legacy has also given him an air of immortality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Themes like loyalty, disguise, and hubris are still relevant in modern literature and society. However, one aspect of Homer's epic may have been more
of an aspiration than a true reflection of the world around him. Women in ancient Greece were relegated to the margins, while women in The Odyssey
were featured as important, multifaceted characters. The Odyssey would not be truly feminist by today's standards; yet, modern feminist movements
may have also found their earliest feminist ideologies in Homer, as he reduced the inequality women faced in his writing. Homer has shown
characteristics of an ancient Greek feminist in The Odyssey, as he displays women as intelligent, puts women in leadership positions, and places

The inciting incident is where the story all begin, the fight at Will's wedding is a point of focus for the conflict and sets up the central dramatic
question of how can this father and son relationship reconcile? And by the time his father is dying, the question will be and this father and son
reconcile in that time and before his father die? Big fish has two parallel stories is Edward in the past and Will in the present. At the moment
where Edward leave the small town of Ashton along with Karl the giants is doesn't have much to do with the central dramatic ideal and question
of the movie. But it is a more significant moment, young Edward no longer fears death and the in the present Edward is now dying from cancer.
The first culmination is Edward and Sandra romance, Edward spend quite lot of times quest to find Sandra. In the mean time in the present,
William suspects his father has been cheating, and may have found proof. The main culmination is when will clean out his father's office and sees a
document about Jenny from Specter. He thinks that this is a woman who his father had an affair. He drove to Specter to meet Jenny, Jenny told Will
that his father has been faithful to his mother, Will would finally have a conversation to his father but his father can't, he had a stroke. The part at the
hospital, Edward wake up and telling his son how he dies but panics and he is unable to tell the story. So Will takes over his father's storytelling and
begins telling an amazing fantastical story of how his father will die. This is the crucial moment. Will have to create one of his father's stories on the

Examples Of Archetypes In Big Fish
Throughout Big Fish, there were many archetypes used to show the underlying meaning of the film. Archetypal symbols, characters, and the archetypal
Romance plot were evident in the story. Through the use of these archetypes, the viewer realizes that Edward Bloom is the Big Fish and the movie is
the story of his journey to be free.
Big Fish contains many archetypal symbols with a deeper meaning than what meets the eye. The most prominent archetype in this movie is, as the title
suggests, the big fish. In mythology, a fish represents divine creation and life. The fish's large size is also indicative of its power and importance.

The plot has many elements of the hero's quest, a key part of a romance. Edward feels he has outgrown the town of Ashton, so he leaves. He
receives supernatural aid from the giant, Karl, and has many other helpers throughout his journey, as seen above. He struggles for his life many
times, first when he believes the giant to be harmful, again on the haunted road, and yet again in Vietnam while stealing enemy plans. In a hero's
quest, the triumph of the hero may consist of rebirth or reappearance, which is seen in Big Fish. Edward turning into a fish in the story of his death
fulfills this romantic plot device and represents the fact that while he may physically leave the world, his legacy will live on forever. The setting of
the work lends further credence to Big Fish being a romance plot. In a romance, the hero encounters a world full of magic and supernatural
intervention. In Edward's tale of his life, he sees his own death through the witch's eye, has the giant topple cars, and turns into a fish when he dies.
The plot structure of Big Fish is clearly a romance and is enriched by archetypes entrenched in the

Meaning Of The Movie 'Big Fish'
In the movie Big Fish quotes are very important to the meaning of the movie and the motivation for the quotes being included. The first quote I chose
is,"The truth is, I didn't see anything of myself in my father. And I don't think he saw anything of himself in me." This quotes meaning to the movie
was that Edward And Will have a bad relationship, they do not have that close father–son relationship that they should have. He does not see that
connection of I want to be just like my dad or any kind of connection in general. They went without talking or seeing each other for three and that is
not normal for a dad and son. A lot of people in real life have bad relationship with their parents and that is sad. The second quote that I chose to explain

Big Fish Quotes
Big Fish produced by Tim Burton consist of much spiritual significance. For example, one might think the fish was a symbol of Christianity, because of
the Jesus fish that we often see on bumper stickers, but there is one true spiritual significance. The one true spiritual significance that sticks out the
most is the Christ– like figure. Edward Bloom, the main character represents the Christ– like figure in this film. Like Jesus, Edward Bloom is a
storyteller who tells the stories of his father. Storytelling is a strong trait that is used in every conversation today. In the film, a quote says "A man tells

Truth In The Film 'Big Fish'
As one should understand, mean has the capability to be found in what one perceives as factual as well as fiction. This becomes apparent when
viewing the film Big Fish, which accurately goes on to portray the connections between fiction, non–fiction, and truth through the recounting of a man's
life story. Upon watching the film, one delves into the life story of Edward Bloom in both its glorious fiction with bizarre and outlandish occurrences
and it's boring mundane truth. As the plot progresses one will be able to understand this divide between what is true and what never happened,
allowing for a thorough understanding of both the film's protagonist Edward Bloom and his son. Edward Bloom tells of his life as a work of fiction,

This is contradictory to the son of Edward Bloom who only wants to know the truth as he feels that he deserves it from years of fictional stories. I
prefer the fictional story over the truth as it allows for me to delve into the creative mind of Edward while simultaneously enjoying its bizarre and
outlandish plot. Produced and directed by Tim Burton, the film Big Fish is primarily a fictional recounting of the life of Edward Bloom. A
majority of the plot takes place in flashbacks, starting with Edward's story about how he caught the biggest fish in his town on the day of his son's
birth using only his wedding ring. It is soon revealed in an argument scene that Edward's son Will Bloom is sick and tired of stories like this as they
are a complete lie. Soon following Will receives news that his father is deathly ill with cancer, so he immediately visits his parents with his wife

times before. His story starting with a flashback in which he and a friend stumble upon a witch that reveals to him how they

Analyzing Daniel Wallace's 'Big Fish'
Big Fish Essay Daniel Wallace's Big Fish is full of difficult topics, including loss of a family member or loved one. Edward's death hits his family
hard, but not in the way one might expect, seeing as they rarely see him. Though everyone has coping mechanisms to deal with death, William's is
unusual.William only understands his father through the stories he tells, so when Edward dies, William remembers him through his stories. The
stories that Edward recite are the only way he and his son connect. Even on his deathbed, Edward's stories take the place of meaningful conversations
with his son. "But I do take him seriously; this is the problem...Where's your sense of humor? Give me a break son, I'm dying here!"(16 Wallace).
While his son begs him for meaningful dialogue, Edward attempts to reconcile himself that he was a good dad. William never directly answers his
father's questioning, instead choosing to smile and close the door. While his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before he began to die, Edward was home so infrequently that his son referred to him as an itinerant dad. On the occasion that Edward is home, he
uses his outlandish tales to teach his son, but he can only fit his storytelling into the little slots of time he gives himself. The book itself is proof that
William barely knows his father's true nature, seeing as the entire book is told in eccentric stories that are not within the realm of possibility. On his
father's death, William does not know how to confront Edward's passing, so instead, he turns him into a story. He says "All this time, my father was
becoming a fish. I saw him dart this way and that, a silvery, brilliant, shining life, and disappear into the darkness of the deep" (180). By claiming that
his father turned into a fish, Edward's son is able to pretend that his father never died. William uses a fantastical story to avoid confronting the hard

Lies In Edward Bloom's Life
To Edward Bloom, his life was about making his own seem as extraordinary as possible. But, as the readers of Big Fish, we can clearly see through
the lies in Edward's stories. Edward Bloom wanted to seem like a hero, and so he wove lies into the truths of his stories. He truly was a salesman
which is evident through the description William Bloom, Edward's son, provides of his comfortable life at home. William has everything he could
possibly need, except for one thing. He does not have a dependable Father who is constantly there for him during the entirety of his life. Simply
described, Edward was a man who couldn't sit still, and he had no routine to follow everyday. Since he had no routine to follow, his son was not a

Yet, we can determine for ourselves whether his birth truly was remarkable, and my conclusion is that it wasn't. He was simply born on the day the
drought ended; he did not bring the rain with him when he entered into the world. He spun lies into his truths, and made "true lies". As the book
continues, these true lies become larger and larger. It goes from merely coincidences in the beginning, such as Edward's birthday being the day the
drought ended, to stories no longer even closely resembling coincidences. The story of Edward's life that all readers of Big Fish are truly pondering is
the day that Edward moves own from his human life and turns into a fish. It is easy for me to conclude Edward Bloom's human life was one that
was not so significant, he was merely a salesman who was not a dependable part of his family's life. He truly did go to college, marry the girl he
loved. He definitely had a son, a comfortable life, and he was constantly away from his family. His stories are absurd, and so I am able to separate
the lies from the truths. And yet, the end of his life is so hard to understand. He loses his human form and becomes a huge fish, while his son is watching

Magical Realism In Big Fish
Through viewing Big Fish, by Tim Burton and reading both of Marquez's stories (Handsomest Drowned Man In The World and A Very Old Man With
Enormous Wings), it becomes apparent that while both novels vary greatly in plot and storyline, they are also both centered around the concept of
magical realism. For example, Big Fish is a story about a young mAn who visits his dying father, but throughout the story, is introduced to various
'magical' entities, which introduce an almost fantasy–like theme to the story. In Marquez's stories, one is about a handsome drowned man and the other
is about a dirty, raggedy angel. We are similarly shown this sense of an ordinary reality, with a certain twinge of magic/fantasy. So while this film and
these novels are completely different in the terms of context and storyline, they share these elements of fantasy, that seamlessly blend together to create
a realistic, yet magical atmosphere that provides the reader with a unique and capturing experience.
In both Big Fish and Marquez's stories, the characters play a pivotal role in establishing the themes of magical realism. In A Very Old Man with
Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children, we are introduced to one of the main characters, Pelayo. Pelayo is quite ordinarycharacter, one that does not
exhibit any "magical" traits that would depict magical realism. Instead, the author uses Pelayo to create a ordinary/everyday reality by establishing a
character that does not have any sort of supernatural

Big Fish Mistakes
Big Fish has a theme that occurred throughout the movie as Barrie Wilson would call Big Fish "a story of redemption" (Wilson 10). Throughout the
movie, Edward had made life mistakes that was eventually redeemed in the end of the movie. Edward, despite being destined as a hero, made several
mistakes throughout the film and he ended up redeeming himself for all his mistakes. The first encounter that Edward has was with Karl. In a way,
Edward solved Ashton problem with the giant, but it was compensated with Karl losing his home. Edward redeemed himself with Karl by introducing
Karl to a group of people that accepted him, which happens to be the circus. In a way, Karl life was better and more meaningful since he was wanted in
the circus than compared to Ashton... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Will also had to redeem himself for his actions that he had done in the past. At first, Will believed Edward stories to be a hundred percent true.
Until he was near his marriage date, he started to question his father life and ended up belittling his stories every single time he talks about it after
marriage. It got bad to the point where Will believed that there was no truth in any of his story. Will also ended suspecting Edward cheating on his
mother since he was frequently gone for a period of time when he was little. When Will son was about to born, Will ended up badgering his father
constantly for his father's real identity. Will wanted to tell real factual stories about this father to his son since he felt that he barely knows his father
at all. Little does he knows, he actually knows almost everything about his father life. This was later revealed when he visited Jennifer, a person who
Edward saved. Jennifer ended up revealing the truth behind Edward period of disappearance when he saved Specter. She also confessed Edward
sincere dedication toward his wife. This encounter left Will in a turmoil since he realized there was some truth in his stories after

Imagination In Big Fish

Imagination has the ability to empower individuals, shaped by our experiences we are able to transcend past our physical and psychological bounds

the significance that the imagination has when faced with adversity in all aspects of our lives.

knowledge of their lively hoods, brought upon by their imagination and suggest that however much information that we are capable of creating just in
our individual minds it is never enough to fill this desire. When the men do not think that the answer is thorough enough the machine replies with a
rhetorical question, "But what actually is it?" when referencing the ultimate question, reinforces the idea that our imagination is longing for an answer

Big Fish Play Analysis
This past week I went to the theater and saw the musical Big Fish, and my first impression before even seeing a second of the play was, "This is a
play I have never heard of, so it cant be that good." But minutes into the play I was hooked, and couldn't keep my eyes off the stage. There were a few
key factors that lead to my attitude doing 180 and greatly enjoying the play. The first factor was the fact it was a musical, I never seen a musical
before Big Fish. To my surprise I really did like the whole feel of the musical. I thought the lines of the songs were quite funny, for example the
song with the witch in it that was on of my favorite scenes. I also thought the choreography was brilliant, especially the scene with the fisherman.
That was hands down my favorite part of the whole musical. The dance that they were doing I thought was very funny, but it also looked pretty

thing in front of that stage. In the beginning of the play, there was a spotlight on it and it looked awesome with fish popping its head up every few

Big Fish: Edward Bloom's Failure as a Father
Big Fish: Edward Bloom's Failure as a Father Creating and overseeing a decent family relationship between a parent and their children is not simple.
It is the parent's responsibility to ensure that their children grow up in a nurturing environment. Daniel Wallace's Big Fish explores the mythical life
of Edward Bloom, a great man who lacks the realistic element of sharing his history and inner thoughts. He also has an egocentric personality which
urges him to pursue his dreams instead of family; resulting in his failure as a father to his only son. In Wallace's Big Fish, it elucidates Edward's
many errors that lead him to be the explanation as to why his relationship with his son is so conflicting. Firstly, the poor father–son... Show more

For instance, it states in the novel that Edward "lived in a state of constant aspiration" (fifteen) and that "getting there, wherever it was, wasn't the
important thing: it was the battle, and the battle after that, and the war was never ending." (fifteen) It also states that he worked and he worked
(fifteen), meaning he was working instead of being with William and Sandra. Due to his low self–esteem, he used almost all his time trying to prove
himself as who he wants to be, rather than playing the correct role as a good father to William and a reliable husband towards Sandra. Edward
inconsiderately does not want to give up on his legacy to his son because he wants to remain the great man he is. For example, Edward "expected
more" (120) back when William was born. He expected "a muted brilliance, a glow, maybe even a halo of some kind." (120) Since William is such
an ordinary child compared to Edward, he believes that his son is not worth of inheriting his identity; hence explaining why William's knowledge
of Edward is limited to a mythical and unrealistic level. Last but not least, Edward Bloom is at fault for the poor relationship built up over the years
of him and son mainly by the reason of him choosing his dream and job over his family. As Edward pursues his dream of becoming a great man, he
was rarely at home. William even referred to their home in Edward's eyes as a "refueling station" (fifteen).

David Wallace Big Fish Analysis
In David Wallace's "Big Fish" the readers are introduced to Edward Bloom, the main protagonist and a larger than life character. The course of the
story follows the ebb and flow of adventure in Edward's life, beginning from a young age in the mystical town of Ashland, and eventually ending
poetically in a guest room. While both of these events may seem normal enough it is the occurences, as described by Edward, that take place in
between that blur the line between fantasy and reality. Therefore, in "Big Fish" by David Wallace, Edward's stories teach about the spontaneity of life
and the knowledge we can gain from the stories of others.

A great illustration of this would be the story of Kyle the giant. To further illustrate, while most of the townspeople regard Kyle as a monstrous
being who is intent on destroying them all, Edward is able to see past their fear and of his own accord reason with and understand Kyle. This is an
obvious lesson about not judging a book by its over. Furthermore, while the story of the big catfish ultimately drives Edward and William apart, the
reasoning behind it can be inferred; Edward is trying to glamourize his life for his son, rather than bore him by telling him a simple business trip
away, he wants to astound him with his own strength and majesty. While the story itself doesn't have the desired effect, it does teach a lesson about
being true to yourself and how much of an effect being truthful can have. While most of the stories within the book can teach a lesson, or a truth, about
life, none of them really are the factual truth and the reader as well as William begin to question if you can really learn something from another

this book was just an illustration about Lynch's experiences and all about how meditating helped him which might be disappointing for the
readers like me because this book can be seen as completely lacking the dramatic tension that readers like me expects from a book. Secondly, I felt
that the information provided in this book was fragmented and not very well structured and it seems that author was free to write his experiences
into bits and pieces without putting any extra efforts towards character development, story arcs and plotting. If you are not a fan of David Lynch
and are not known to his works you will be really disappointed. On the other hand, if you are a great fan of Lynch it is a great book to read for you
because every fan desires to know more about his role model's inspiration, how he develop ideas, what are the pushing factors for his works and
this book contains it all. It contains everything from Lynch's experiences to his inspirations and push factors for his creative thinking. It is a great
book for the ones who want to understand Lynch more deeply. The reason for my liking towards this book was some of the quotes and phrases which
I discussed above in the review which were really eye opening and motivating for people who have lost all the hopes from their

In the film, a quote says "A man tells
stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him and he becomes immortal." essentially this quote is saying that

Big Fish Theory Analysis
The album I decided to review was "Big Fish Theory" by artist Vince Staples. "Big Fish Theory" is Vince's sixth project in a mixture of albums and
ep's. Vince Staples is an American rapper from the Ramona Park area of North Long Beach, California. He's a member of the hip–hop trio Cutthroat
Boyz. Along with appearing in movies "Dope" and "Prima Donna". Vince signed with record labels Def Jam Recordings and Blacksmith Records.
Throughout the album you could say that the songs tie together and they tie together very well. They merge well together because although each song
has a different beat and style, Vince is able to deliver exactly what you're supposed to hear each time. Each song gives you a sound full of different

The overfishing of our world's oceans is causing a depletion of some prize fish, such as tuna and swordfish, to the point that some scientists believe
that 90% of these big fish populations have been fished out. Jeremy Jackson of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography published a study in 2001 in
which he asserts that overfishing is more destructive than toxic pollution or degrading water quality (University of Phoenix, 2007). Dr. Daniel Pauly,
Professor and Director of the University of British Columbia's Fisheries Centre, describes it as follow on The Overfishing.org (2007) website: "The

By putting this plan into practice, we will also resolve the other problems created by over fishing, as it effects not only the depleted fish population, but
also the animals for which those fish are food of choice. Whales are turning to sea otters for food, rather than the sea lions and seals on which they
normally feed, as those populations also decline. Over fishing has also caused the use, as stated earlier, of smaller mesh nets, increasing the amount of
by catch that is caught in the nets. By catch is the seabirds, dolphins, sea turtles, and even whales that are also caught in the net as they drag it in, and
are usually dumped back into the ocean, dead or dying. A drastic reduction in the amount of by catch will subsequently occur with the reinstating of the
larger mesh nets.
The management plan may cause fishermen to have to look into a second source of income for the first five to ten years, as the most severe
restrictions are put into place, giving the fish populations can breed and repopulate, and a reassessment to be done by the scientific community
charged with monitoring the big fish groups. Governments might be forced to subsidize the industry for this initial period, to help prevent illegal
poaching by some fishermen who saw poaching as their only economic alternative. Consumers would have to reduce their use of fish, and would have
to pay more for the fish they did purchase at the market during this period of

The Archetype Of Metamorphosis In Tim Burton's Big Fish
In Tim Burton's "Big Fish", there is a recurring archetype of metamorphosis. It demonstrates transitions from innocence to experience, from the Iron
Age to the Golden Age; and from season to season. Each shift plays a big part in the overall development of the film, as well as adding to several
characters dimensions. The shift from innocence to experience is demonstrated throughout William's personal growth surrounding his father's stories.
His perspective on them shifts dramatically as he searches for their truths. In the beginning, he innocently assumes that they are nothing but lies. As his
search continues, and his experience grows, he discovered that there is a basis of truth in every story. This is significant as it changes his perspective
on his father. For years, he had foolishly believed that there was absolutely no truth, to the point where it caused tension between them. The change in...

In his stories, everything that seemed bad or evil at the time, lead to something good. His path through the dark woods nearly killed him, yet brought
him to Spector, a town of great influence. This represents winter turning into spring. Similarly, his time at the circus did the same. It seemed as
though he would never learn Sandra's name, only small insignificant facts. However, the small facts he did learnt eventually helped him win her over
in the end. These changes were what allowed Edward to be so successful in all his endeavours. His life as a whole also went through all the seasons.
His happy childhood represented spring. His adulthood became summer, as all his accomplishments were realised. Autumn started after his fight with
William, and finally winter came with his death. The change in season through his life gave Edward a full life. These shifts shaped who he was, and
consequently affect those around him. The seasons represented, for Edward, hope. They assured him that light would eventually

A Story's Impact on Life in Tim Burton's Big Fish
A story is not only memorable because of its content, but also because of who told it, the way it was told, and the significance of the tale. The
stories we tell or hear are a vital part of life and this is evidently shown in Tim Burton's film, Big Fish. The film shows the true importance of stories
and the impacts they have on everyone. It follows the story of Edward Bloom, as he re–tells his past in unbelievable stories, and the life of his son
William, as he tries to deal with his father's questionable past. The movie shows the usefulness of stories in several ways; they are a person's legacy,
they allow us to momentarily escape reality, and they connect and intertwine people's lives.
To start off, stories are our legacy; what we leave behind when we are gone. They stay with the people we have influenced and keep us alive in their
memories. Through the stories we leave behind, we can remain immortal to those who know our tale. This rephrases what William had said near the
end of the film; "A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal." The
stories that we tell are also comforting to those we depart from as it can help with the sadness to think about the life that person had once led.
Knowing that they had a good life, and being able to laugh at funny memories is a great way to deal with the emotional pain after losing someone. In
Big Fish, during the funeral of Edward Bloom, everyone was

Big Fish Reflection
Edward Bloom was a story teller. He would tell elaborate stories to his son since he was born. Not only were the stories exciting, they were told to
bring life and excitement into Edwards life. Growing up, William enjoyed his father's stories. As time goes on, the stories began to become more and
more uneventful and less entertaining. This was because William has heard the same stories his whole life. He did not know what was true and what
was fake. On his death bed, Edward reconnects with William by getting him to see that he was not lying his whole life, just telling his life story in a
much more interesting way. Yes, some details were changed but that does not mean they were all lies. William just did not see that until the end.
Big fish tells a story of adventure, love, life and death. Edward loved his family most of all. He let you know many time throughout the film. What
stuck out the most to me was when he finished remodeling Jennifer's house. Jen came on to him. The love he had for his wife truly showed through
when he rejected her affection. This shows, 'how that the head of the family loves more than anything: his wife and only son' (Vega). At a young age,
Will didn't have the relationship with his father that he wanted. This was because Edward was often gone for periods of time, traveling and working.
Upon Edwards return, he would tell Will stories of his travels and adventures. To this end, William was not able to tell if his dads stories were true or
not.

Big Fish Is A Good Character Study
"There are some fish that cannot be caught. It's not that they are faster or stronger than other fish, they're just touched by something extra." This
quote takes place in the movie Big Fish. It is about a father and son who don't get along very well. William Bloom, who is the son to Edward
bloom, gets very upset with his father for always telling tall tales, or stories anywhere they go. In the beginning of the film, the father starts off by
telling the story about him catching the fish at his sons wedding reception. William gets very angry with his father for telling this story once again, and
the fact that it was at his son's reception. This occurrence leads to William and Edward to stop speaking to each other.Big Fish is a good character study
because of the multiple hidden meanings and messages throughout the film.
When describing major's characters in a film, they mostly are defined centrally to the development and resolution of the story's conflict. In this film,
the two most important characters our Edward and William. Edward bloom is the main character of the film for many reasons. Edward is mostly
considered as the hero of the film. According to New York times, A.O Scott states, "The hero is Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman, who, though he
comes from a small town in Alabama, is played as a young man by Ewan McGregor, who is Scottish, and in his later years by Albert Finney, who is
English" (Scott). He is a man that explains his life through marvelous stories that

Big Fish Movie Analysis
The book Big Fish and its movie adaptation shows the importance of how different factors help to improve the story. This book tells of the
legendary stories of Edward Bloom, narrated by his son, William. The tales of Edward Bloom seem fictitious and far too amusing to be real. His son
is determined to find the truth in his father's stories in order to understand who his father truly was behind his fantastic stories. The movie does not
fail in its interpretation of the novel, in fact the movie could very well be even better. The addition of new scenes and the focus on Edward's love life
help the movie tell the story in it's own way, showcasing the brilliance of the art of cinematography. Although the movie takes a different approach from

Motifs are described as a recurring theme that has symbolic significance. Motifs are a powerful embellishment and provide movies with a
traceable pattern or a significant meeting to look for later on. Finally, motifs capture and emphasize the most important part of a movie or story.
The motifs in Big Fish consisted of the ring that Edward used to catch the fish, the Witch's eye that showed Edward his death, the fish that Edward
caught the day his son was born and the giant. An example of the Giants significance in the movie Big Fish was when he stated, "You think this
town is too small for you? This town is too small for my ambition." The giant in the small city of Ashton represents the big fish in a little pond
analogy and Edward Bloom's ambition. The witches eye that showed Edward' death was a fantastic motif because it portrayed his fearlessness. The
eye is the symbol for himself, and he realizes when he looks into the eye, death doesn't scare him. The witches eye also foreshadows his future
relationship with the witch. Lastly, the eye is a motif for the life he didn't have and it was Edwards' first meeting and encounter with appearance versus

Brief Summary Of The Movie 'Big Fish'
The movie Big Fish was produced in 2003. Big Fish is about a dying man, Edward, and his son, Will. The movie consists of several flashbacks
following Edward Blooms life and his adventures. It shows how Edward and his son's relationship was very strained and then how it was resolved
in the end. There were also a great number of fantasy aspects in this movie that make the movie very unique. These fantasies are mainly in the
stories that Edward tells his son. They show how Edward Bloom lived his life and how he made life choices knowing how he would die. Edward
Bloom and his son's relationship was not very strong. Edward was always out of town because of his salesman job. When Edward and his son,
Will, actually talked Edward would tell his son stories about his life and his adventures. As Will grew older, he did not believe the fantasies that
were in the stories that he told. Edward was very suspicious of his father too. He was certain that he was having an affair because he was away... Show

knew that it would not kill him. When he was drafted into the military, he took the most dangerous and crazy tasks in order to shorten his time. He
ended up parachuting right into a performance at a Korean army camp and found the information he needed. The United States military did not hear
from him, so they assumed that he was dead. They had to deliver the awful news to Edward's wife. Then Edward found his way back and surprised
his wife. He ended up dying of cancer in the hospital. At Edward's funeral all of the characters of his stories attended. That was when Will, his son,

Big Fish Analysis
Most of the fantasy stories or movies have events in which people transform into creatures or objects which is known as a metamorphosis, but in
magical realism people treat this as normal. For example, in the movie Big Fish, by Daniel Wallace, the narrator Edward Bloom tells his son's
wife a story about him working at a circus to try and find out more about the love of his life. Edward say in the movie, "On the way to talk to Mr.
Calloway I noticed Mr. Calloway's trailer was shaking and a wolf jumps out and attacks me, as I was on the floor I grabbed a stick and started to
play with the wolf." William continued with, "In the morning Mr. Calloway comes out of the woods with the stick I threw in his mouth." The clowns
treated the werewolf as if it were normal and did not pay much attention to Mr. Calloway's trailer because it happened every full moon. As... Show more

Daniel Wallace's Big Fish tells the story of a father and son trying to communicate and make up for lost time at the time of the father's death. In the
novel, the father's death takes place in four different stories or "takes." In the midst of these accounts of his death, we are told through stories and
tall tales just what the father, Edward Bloom, was really like. Throughout the story are one page chapters where the story shifts and the life of
Edward Bloom is told by others and through this we are told what "they say" about him. It is in these pages where the real legend of Edward Bloom
is discovered. These one page chapters not only help in portraying Edward Bloom as a legend, but also add to the uniqueness of Daniel Wallace's...

The Things They Carried, And Big Fish And The American Dream
Patrick Rothfuss, an American writer, once said, "It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That
story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story." Rothfuss explains how storytelling is always a part of everyone. Stories are told
in different ways, and those stories shape the person tremendously. Many of the stories told today are what shape the audience. In "The Things they
Carried", by Tim O'Brien, and the film "Big Fish", directed by Tim Burton, stories are portrayed to be productive because the characters all have an
American Dream and their stories help the characters achieve tasks to get to their American Dream.
According to "Why Americans are Obsessed with Telling their Stories", by Ozy Qi Wang, "American parents regard parent
–child bonding as the No.1
priority of personal storytelling: They encourage children to share their stories, pay great attention to and are sympathetic with children's thoughts and
feelings, and create opportunities to re–experience the past with children." Americans think it is key to keep their children's dreams alive, they
encourage them at a young age to express how they feel and what they dream of for their future. Kids grow up used to the idea of sharing their stories
and create more meaningful connections with everyone they encounter. In Big Fish, Edward Bloom told his son stories growing up to show him that
anything is possible. Throughout the film, Ed Bloom got his

Archetypes In Big Fish
Big Fish For many years, in novels and storytelling there has always been context that is not seen nor heard, only implied; which plays an
important role in the story being told. In the case of "Big Fish", archetypal patterns can easily be applied and seen during the story being told. I am
not normally a believer of archetypes, or symbolism, but in the case of this movie I can clearly see that messages were shown. To clarify, these
points are based mainly off of the character Edward Bloom claims to be through his stories, for we do not know which of these stories are true or
false. The first big indication that Edward's stories were, at the least, a little over exaggerated was when he said he grew at alarming rates. This simply

Magic Realism In The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World
At its most basic level, magical realism is the mixture of the supernatural with realistic characteristics. This genre is known for having specific traits
to help classify if a work of art is in the genre. One work of art that exemplifies almost all of these traits is "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the
World" by Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez. After a washed up corpse is found in a small village, the people of the city fall in love with the man's tallness
and his handsomeness. They quickly decide to worship him and they want to better themselves because of him. On the other hand, one example of a
misconception of magical realism is Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton. The central character, Edward Bloom, recounts his life with exaggerated stories
to his son Will, who thinks the embellished tales are unnecessary and insulting. As his father is sick, Will travels to be with him. During his visit, Will
gets a more in–depth view of his father's real life and the truth of what his life actually was. This film has some of the traits, but not enough to classify
it as part of the magical realism genre.
One crucial trait needed for magical realism is the idea of irreducible magic. This means magic that cannot be normalized or reduced throughout the
work of art. Big Fish very clearly breaks this characteristic. In Edward's stories, he magnifies the sense of magic. When Ed passes away, Will
discovers that all the magic Ed encountered throughout his life was relatively normal compared to

Big Fish And Atonement Comparative Essay
The two movies Atonement and Big Fish are very similar although at first, the average viewer would not normally acknowledge it. The two movies
seem very different, from the calm narration of the historical fiction movie Atonement and the wild extreme imagery that the narrators from Big Fish, a
fantasy drama film, expelled to the audience. Yet the narrators from these two movies are the aspects that make these films similar. The film
Atonement at first seemed like it had four different narrators, Briony Tallis as a child, Briony Tallis as a young adult, Cecilia Tallis and Robbie.
Brioney as a child ,who narrates most of the beginning of the movie, seemed like an unreliable narrator once the same event was retold later in the
story by a different narrator who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The major point in the story where a viewer can infer than Briony is an unreliable narrator was during Briony's brother's welcome home dinner
party. In this particular part in the film Briony's two twin cousins, who came to stay with the Tallis family since their parents were getting
divorced, ran "away" and all the guests at the dinner party went searching for Briony's two cousins in the dark. When Briony was searching for her
cousins she flashed her flashlight towards the ground and saw the two twin boys older sister that was staying with them, Lola, being raped by a
man. Briony tells Lola she saw the man's face who raped her and told her family that the man who raped Lola was Robbie. Briony essentially ruins
Robbie's life because of this rape allegation he gets sent to prison and enlists in the army to become free, but ultimately dies from an infection.
Where towards the end of the movie, where an older Briony is trying to make amends with her sister Cecilia, who was in love with Robbie, makes the

How Does Tim Burton Use Sound Techniques Used In Big Fish
Tim Burton's Big Fish narrates the story of Edward Bloom recounting his life experiences with his disparate son as he comes to terms with an

further contributes to the horror of the scene. Director Tim Burton uses side lighting in various instances throughout "The Witch's Eye" to convey a

Symbolism Of Water In Big Fish Essay
In "Big Fish", Daniel Wallace utilizes water as a recurring theme to reveal that Edward Bloom truly represents the book's title. The story of Big Fish
has had a great deal of meaning in my life because I was just in the First Stage production last spring which was a retelling of the 1998 tale. The novel
Big Fish revolves around Edward Bloom, a well known teller of tales, and his middle–aged son William, a pessimistic businessman who is out on a
quest to find the true meaning of his father's massive stories. Edward Bloom was to a sense a golden child, he remembers every man's name, he could
run fast, speak in front of crowds, and was a mighty charmer with the ladies. But the thing that William cannot wrap his head around is why his father

William will soon come to realize that his father's stories were not far from the truth. He really did tame a giant, he meets a so–called mermaid and
meets and marries the girl of his dreams, Sandra. The object which I brought in, a water bottle, is used to signify the many water symbols in the
novel. Water could well be one of the most present and identifiable concepts in the Big Fish story line. I believe the active motion symbolizes
Edwards ambition to see every continent and meet everyone in the world. I also found that it represents the quiet, steady personality of Will.
Edward is somehow always finding his way back to water throughout the novel. The first scene of the novel begins at the banks of a river where
Edward and Will are resting after a hike. He sets his feet in the water and smiles, a smile that William proclaims he has never seen before. Edward
then says "this reminds me..." but never finishes his thought, leaving the reader hanging as to what the story would have been. Another water reference
was when Edward sees the beautiful women, the supposed mermaid, in the water and saves her from a snake. This tale occurs in a river near his
hometown of Ashland Alabama. Toward

The Big Fish Film Analysis

  • 1. The Big Fish Film Analysis The Big Fish is a 2003 fantasy/ comedy–drama directed by the director of popular movies such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton. The Big Fish takes us into the life of Edward Bloom (Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney), and the feud he holds with his son Will Bloom (Billy Crudup). Will's feud with his dad stems from his dad's overexagerated stories and gaps between fantasy and reality. Will goes with his wife, Sandra Bloom (Alison Lohman), to find out once and for all the truth about his father's life. During the narration of Edward's life, the movie slips into a fantasy world where we witness the abnormal and the exdrodanary, and sit on the edge of our seats as we anticipate the ending of the phenomenal fairy tale. The fist main element ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Big Fish Research Paper At New Melones Reservoir, despite the continuing snow melt, the water level dropped another foot last week. The water clarity is good and the temperature is slowly coming up, now averaging 76 to 81–degrees. Trout are showing signs of schooling over deep water and feeding on shad minnows. Trollers have been finding trout at 40 to 60 feet with Speedy Shiners, Needlefish, and ExCel lures. Night fishermen have been doing well by anchoring over fairly deep water and lowering their light to about 20 feet. This attracts plankton, which in turn, attracts shad, which will attract larger fish. Live minnows and nightcrawlers are choice baits. The kokanee numbers may be down, but the quality is good with some going 15 to 18 inches. Bladed lures may work well in deeper water as they create vibration which will attract fish. Scented corn on each hook is important. Big trout winner at Glory Hole Sports was, again, Bob James, of Murphys, with a 2–pound rainbow caught at 55 feet in the main lake. Big catfish winner was John Tennant, of Twain Harte, with an 11 –pound, 15–ounce fish caught with sardine bait in the main lake. Bass fishing is good for those who specialize in that type of fishing. Hayden Lee, of Angels Camp, recently caught a 10 pound Largemouth Bass on a topwater lure and he had no net in the boat. He and a friend were able to boat the fish for photos before release. • 3. Cinematic Techniques In Big Fish Big Fish is a film that jumps between past and present to relay the fantastical stories and adventures of Edward Bloom. This film presents these stories through various flashbacks as his son, Will Bloom, tries to piece together the man his father claims to be. As the flashbacks unfold, stunning cinematography, lighting and colours are used to create beautiful and enchanting scenes that really complete the movie. The sequence I chose to analyse is the town scene in which Edward comes to the realisation that he does not belong in Spectre, and needs to leave whilst he still can. Spectre is a mysterious town that Edward unexpectedly stumbles upon after leaving his hometown. Everything there appears to be perfect with the overly enthusiastic characters, grass–paved streets and the "best pie you've ever had".... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Edward approaches the dancing characters, there are numerous, exposed spotted lights above and around the scene. These are used to connote natural light, which makes the people and their surroundings glow in a bright, vivid way; this glowing effect gives the scene a hazy, dreamlike quality, which further adds to the surreal and magical elements of the film. Spectre represents heaven on earth for Edward, and the lighting choices reflect this well. As it becomes evident to Edward that he has to leave Spectre and he begins to back away from the scene, the enchanting glow that surrounds the town appears to become muted, and as soon as he has withdrawn from the spotlights, fades completely. This reveals how the dream is quickly disappearing as Edward is coming back to reality. By using these effects, Rousselot shows how even though something may seem perfect, if you take a step back and look at the whole picture, it may not be as flawless and extraordinary as you once ... • 4. Big Fish Movie Eval Essay Big Fish "So this is a tall tale?" "Well, it's not a short one..." Stories are our essence of life. They grow and change with us. They allow us to reconstruct the past, and put our slant on things. They don't' have make sense, and they don't all have to be fact. That's what kind of story this is. Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton, is a heartwarming, comedic film, with many twists and turns. It explores the world of an eccentric father, while telling his life story. And so, our story begins. It is Edward's myths, of course, that really reveal the man he is. Tim Burton mixes tender heartfelt drama with zany, outrageous scenes, skipping from past to present, while keeping the tension alive. Finding the town of Ashton and small pond ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the film's (fish) hook, and once it sinks itself in, it carries you on a journey that is unexpected, enchanting, outrageous, and genuinely moving. Edward's encounter with a witch (early in the film) plants a question in the audience's mind that we know must be answered by film's end. When this is finally resolved (along with a number of other things), the result is remarkable. I have rarely seen a collection of images that have stirred my emotions so much. In the end of the film, Will ends up taking on Edwards abilities by telling his father one of his own stories on his deathbed. So the film came full circle and Will realized the importance of story–telling to his father, and to himself. I did have a few problems with this film. The first would be the overly exaggerated southern accent it tends to take away from a few of the scenes because you're more focused on how they talk rather than what they're saying. Also I can see how very few can relate on a personal level to this story. But either way this film breathes new life into story–telling and gives it a new spin. This is one of the most pleasant surprises to come out of the body of 2003 films. I never expected this movie to reach me so deeply, but it has, and I imagine that many who treasure the magic of storytelling will feel the same way. In less capable hands, Big Fish could be seen as a liar's a life. In trying to reshape the world around his fantasy,

"Big Fish in Troubled Waters" by Stephen Ornes informs you that our oceans and water life are being overfished resulting in a decrease infish. Thus analyzed this quote means that when Edward went down the bad path, he got rewarded by getting to Spectre a location that plays a major role in the film, but in real life this means that if you choose the more difficult path you will get more in return for you work than if you take the smooth easy route. • 8. The Odyssey In Tim Burton's 2003 Film Big Fish In Tim Burton's 2003 film Big Fish, Edward Bloom leaves his small town of Ashton and lives a life full of adventure. From befriending a giant, working at the circus, getting trapped in a mysterious town, and robbing a bank, Bloom lives a life of mythic proportions. Many of his trials and tribulations are centered around the love of his life Sandra, and returning to her after he is drafted into the Korean War. In the final lines of the movie, Edward's son William Bloom states, "A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. However, one aspect of Homer's epic may have been more of an aspiration than a true reflection of the world around him. Women in ancient Greece were relegated to the margins, while women in The Odyssey were featured as important, multifaceted characters. The Odyssey would not be truly feminist by today's standards; yet, modern feminist movements may have also found their earliest feminist ideologies in Homer, as he reduced the inequality women faced in his writing. And by the time his father is dying, the question will be and this father and son reconcile in that time and before his father die? Big fish has two parallel stories is Edward in the past and Will in the present. At the moment where Edward leave the small town of Ashton along with Karl the giants is doesn't have much to do with the central dramatic ideal and question of the movie. But it is a more significant moment, young Edward no longer fears death and the in the present Edward is now dying from cancer. The first culmination is Edward and Sandra romance, Edward spend quite lot of times quest to find Sandra. In the mean time in the present, William suspects his father has been cheating, and may have found proof. The main culmination is when will clean out his father's office and sees a document about Jenny from Specter. He thinks that this is a woman who his father had an affair. • 10. Examples Of Archetypes In Big Fish Throughout Big Fish, there were many archetypes used to show the underlying meaning of the film. Archetypal symbols, characters, and the archetypal Romance plot were evident in the story. Through the use of these archetypes, the viewer realizes that Edward Bloom is the Big Fish and the movie is the story of his journey to be free. Big Fish contains many archetypal symbols with a deeper meaning than what meets the eye. The most prominent archetype in this movie is, as the title suggests, the big fish. In mythology, a fish represents divine creation and life. The fish's large size is also indicative of its power and importance. Edward Bloom personifies the big fish; he brought life to everyone he came across through his interesting and inspiring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The plot has many elements of the hero's quest, a key part of a romance. Edward feels he has outgrown the town of Ashton, so he leaves. He receives supernatural aid from the giant, Karl, and has many other helpers throughout his journey, as seen above. He struggles for his life many times, first when he believes the giant to be harmful, again on the haunted road, and yet again in Vietnam while stealing enemy plans. In a hero's quest, the triumph of the hero may consist of rebirth or reappearance, which is seen in Big Fish. Edward turning into a fish in the story of his death fulfills this romantic plot device and represents the fact that while he may physically leave the world, his legacy will live on forever. The setting of the work lends further credence to Big Fish being a romance plot. In a romance, the hero encounters a world full of magic and supernatural intervention. In Edward's tale of his life, he sees his own death through the witch's eye, has the giant topple cars, and turns into a fish when he dies. • 11. Meaning Of The Movie 'Big Fish' In the movie Big Fish quotes are very important to the meaning of the movie and the motivation for the quotes being included. The first quote I chose is,"The truth is, I didn't see anything of myself in my father. And I don't think he saw anything of himself in me." This quotes meaning to the movie was that Edward And Will have a bad relationship, they do not have that close father–son relationship that they should have. He does not see that connection of I want to be just like my dad or any kind of connection in general. • 12. Big Fish Quotes Big Fish produced by Tim Burton consist of much spiritual significance. For example, one might think the fish was a symbol of Christianity, because of the Jesus fish that we often see on bumper stickers, but there is one true spiritual significance. The one true spiritual significance that sticks out the most is the Christ– like figure. Edward Bloom, the main character represents the Christ– like figure in this film. Like Jesus, Edward Bloom is a storyteller who tells the stories of his father. Storytelling is a strong trait that is used in every conversation today. This becomes apparent when viewing the film Big Fish, which accurately goes on to portray the connections between fiction, non–fiction, and truth through the recounting of a man's life story. Upon watching the film, one delves into the life story of Edward Bloom in both its glorious fiction with bizarre and outlandish occurrences and it's boring mundane truth. Produced and directed by Tim Burton, the film Big Fish is primarily a fictional recounting of the life of Edward Bloom. A majority of the plot takes place in flashbacks, starting with Edward's story about how he caught the biggest fish in his town on the day of his son's birth using only his wedding ring. Edward's death hits his family hard, but not in the way one might expect, seeing as they rarely see him. Though everyone has coping mechanisms to deal with death, William's is unusual.William only understands his father through the stories he tells, so when Edward dies, William remembers him through his stories. The stories that Edward recite are the only way he and his son connect. Even on his deathbed, Edward's stories take the place of meaningful conversations with his son. "But I do take him seriously; this is the problem...Where's your sense of humor? Give me a break son, I'm dying here!"(16 Wallace). But, as the readers of Big Fish, we can clearly see through the lies in Edward's stories. Edward Bloom wanted to seem like a hero, and so he wove lies into the truths of his stories. He truly was a salesman which is evident through the description William Bloom, Edward's son, provides of his comfortable life at home. He was simply born on the day the drought ended; he did not bring the rain with him when he entered into the world. He spun lies into his truths, and made "true lies". As the book continues, these true lies become larger and larger. It goes from merely coincidences in the beginning, such as Edward's birthday being the day the drought ended, to stories no longer even closely resembling coincidences. The story of Edward's life that all readers of Big Fish are truly pondering is the day that Edward moves own from his human life and turns into a fish. It is easy for me to conclude Edward Bloom's human life was one that was not so significant, he was merely a salesman who was not a dependable part of his family's life. He truly did go to college, marry the girl he loved. He definitely had a son, a comfortable life, and he was constantly away from his family. • 16. Magical Realism In Big Fish Through viewing Big Fish, by Tim Burton and reading both of Marquez's stories (Handsomest Drowned Man In The World and A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings), it becomes apparent that while both novels vary greatly in plot and storyline, they are also both centered around the concept of magical realism. For example, Big Fish is a story about a young mAn who visits his dying father, but throughout the story, is introduced to various 'magical' entities, which introduce an almost fantasy–like theme to the story. In Marquez's stories, one is about a handsome drowned man and the other is about a dirty, raggedy angel. We are similarly shown this sense of an ordinary reality, with a certain twinge of magic/fantasy. So while this film and these novels are completely different in the terms of context and storyline, they share these elements of fantasy, that seamlessly blend together to create a realistic, yet magical atmosphere that provides the reader with a unique and capturing experience. In both Big Fish and Marquez's stories, the characters play a pivotal role in establishing the themes of magical realism. In A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children, we are introduced to one of the main characters, Pelayo. Pelayo is quite ordinarycharacter, one that does not exhibit any "magical" traits that would depict magical realism. Instead, the author uses Pelayo to create a ordinary/everyday reality by establishing a character that does not have any sort of supernatural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Big Fish Play Analysis This past week I went to the theater and saw the musical Big Fish, and my first impression before even seeing a second of the play was, "This is a play I have never heard of, so it cant be that good." But minutes into the play I was hooked, and couldn't keep my eyes off the stage. There were a few key factors that lead to my attitude doing 180 and greatly enjoying the play. The first factor was the fact it was a musical, I never seen a musical before Big Fish. To my surprise I really did like the whole feel of the musical. I thought the lines of the songs were quite funny, for example the song with the witch in it that was on of my favorite scenes. I also thought the choreography was brilliant, especially the scene with the fisherman. That was hands down my favorite part of the whole musical. I am huge fan of the way the assembled the props, and used them to make the play more interesting. An example of what I am talking about is that little river type thing in front of that stage. In the beginning of the play, there was a spotlight on it and it looked awesome with fish popping its head up every few seconds. Big Fish: Edward Bloom's Failure as a Father Big Fish: Edward Bloom's Failure as a Father Creating and overseeing a decent family relationship between a parent and their children is not simple. It is the parent's responsibility to ensure that their children grow up in a nurturing environment. Daniel Wallace's Big Fish explores the mythical life of Edward Bloom, a great man who lacks the realistic element of sharing his history and inner thoughts. He also has an egocentric personality which urges him to pursue his dreams instead of family; resulting in his failure as a father to his only son. Due to his low self–esteem, he used almost all his time trying to prove himself as who he wants to be, rather than playing the correct role as a good father to William and a reliable husband towards Sandra. Edward inconsiderately does not want to give up on his legacy to his son because he wants to remain the great man he is. For example, Edward "expected more" (120) back when William was born. He expected "a muted brilliance, a glow, maybe even a halo of some kind." Last but not least, Edward Bloom is at fault for the poor relationship built up over the years of him and son mainly by the reason of him choosing his dream and job over his family. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By putting this plan into practice, we will also resolve the other problems created by over fishing, as it effects not only the depleted fish population, but also the animals for which those fish are food of choice. Whales are turning to sea otters for food, rather than the sea lions and seals on which they normally feed, as those populations also decline. Over fishing has also caused the use, as stated earlier, of smaller mesh nets, increasing the amount of by catch that is caught in the nets. By catch is the seabirds, dolphins, sea turtles, and even whales that are also caught in the net as they drag it in, and are usually dumped back into the ocean, dead or dying. A drastic reduction in the amount of by catch will subsequently occur with the reinstating of the larger mesh nets. The management plan may cause fishermen to have to look into a second source of income for the first five to ten years, as the most severe restrictions are put into place, giving the fish populations can breed and repopulate, and a reassessment to be done by the scientific community charged with monitoring the big fish groups. Governments might be forced to subsidize the industry for this initial period, to help prevent illegal poaching by some fishermen who saw poaching as their only economic alternative. Consumers would have to reduce their use of fish, and would have to pay more for the fish they did purchase at the market during this period of

The stories we tell or hear are a vital part of life and this is evidently shown in Tim Burton's film, Big Fish. The film shows the true importance of stories and the impacts they have on everyone. It follows the story of Edward Bloom, as he re–tells his past in unbelievable stories, and the life of his son William, as he tries to deal with his father's questionable past. The movie shows the usefulness of stories in several ways; they are a person's legacy, they allow us to momentarily escape reality, and they connect and intertwine people's lives. To start off, stories are our legacy; what we leave behind when we are gone. They stay with the people we have influenced and keep us alive in their memories. Through the stories we leave behind, we can remain immortal to those who know our tale. This rephrases what William had said near the end of the film; "A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal." The stories that we tell are also comforting to those we depart from as it can help with the sadness to think about the life that person had once led. The first big indication that Edward's stories were, at the least, a little over exaggerated was when he said he grew at alarming rates. This simply isn't real,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This tiny town represents nothing other than heaven itself. It even has a list of people coming to Spectre and when they are arriving, and everybody in the town wears white or off–white colours, the only thing missing is a God. The small pond nearby seems although it's not a part of Spectre, it's filled with snakes and leeches; perhaps it's a notion that Edward is not meant to be here, he needs a place with a bigger pond, an ocean ... • 38. Magic Realism In The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World At its most basic level, magical realism is the mixture of the supernatural with realistic characteristics. This genre is known for having specific traits to help classify if a work of art is in the genre. One work of art that exemplifies almost all of these traits is "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World" by Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez. After a washed up corpse is found in a small village, the people of the city fall in love with the man's tallness and his handsomeness. They quickly decide to worship him and they want to better themselves because of him. On the other hand, one example of a misconception of magical realism is Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton. The central character, Edward Bloom, recounts his life with exaggerated stories to his son Will, who thinks the embellished tales are unnecessary and insulting. As his father is sick, Will travels to be with him. During his visit, Will gets a more in–depth view of his father's real life and the truth of what his life actually was. This film has some of the traits, but not enough to classify it as part of the magical realism genre. One crucial trait needed for magical realism is the idea of irreducible magic. This means magic that cannot be normalized or reduced throughout the work of art. Big Fish very clearly breaks this characteristic. In Edward's stories, he magnifies the sense of magic. When Ed passes away, Will discovers that all the magic Ed encountered throughout his life was relatively normal compared to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Big Fish And Atonement Comparative Essay The two movies Atonement and Big Fish are very similar although at first, the average viewer would not normally acknowledge it. The two movies seem very different, from the calm narration of the historical fiction movie Atonement and the wild extreme imagery that the narrators from Big Fish, a fantasy drama film, expelled to the audience. Yet the narrators from these two movies are the aspects that make these films similar. The film Atonement at first seemed like it had four different narrators, Briony Tallis as a child, Briony Tallis as a young adult, Cecilia Tallis and Robbie. Brioney as a child ,who narrates most of the beginning of the movie, seemed like an unreliable narrator once the same event was retold later in the story by a different narrator who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The major point in the story where a viewer can infer than Briony is an unreliable narrator was during Briony's brother's welcome home dinner party. In this particular part in the film Briony's two twin cousins, who came to stay with the Tallis family since their parents were getting divorced, ran "away" and all the guests at the dinner party went searching for Briony's two cousins in the dark. When Briony was searching for her cousins she flashed her flashlight towards the ground and saw the two twin boys older sister that was staying with them, Lola, being raped by a man. Briony tells Lola she saw the man's face who raped her and told her family that the man who raped Lola was Robbie. Briony essentially ruins Robbie's life because of this rape allegation he gets sent to prison and enlists in the army to become free, but ultimately dies from an infection. Where towards the end of the movie, where an older Briony is trying to make amends with her sister Cecilia, who was in love with Robbie, makes the revelation to her sister that the man who actually raped Lola was Leo's, their older brother, friend Paul who visited the Tallis family with him ... • 40. How Does Tim Burton Use Sound Techniques Used In Big Fish Tim Burton's Big Fish narrates the story of Edward Bloom recounting his life experiences with his disparate son as he comes to terms with an inevitable death. "The Witch's Eye," one of Bloom's countless tales, follows a young Edward Bloom and his friends visiting their local witch late at night. Edward's friends pressure him into stealing the witch's glass eye, which Edward confidently sets off to do. Edward walks to the front door alone and is startled by the witch. The witch follows Edward to his friends and allows each child to look into her eye and observe their death. Throughout this scene, director Tim Burton uses sound techniques, shots and framing, and lighting effects to portray a sinister setting, characterize various personas,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the kids are talking about the witch at the opening of the scene, side lighting is implemented to establish a spine–chilling mood. This side lighting establishes a mood that is persistent throughout "The Witch's Eye." Likewise, Burton includes more side lighting when the witch is first introduced. In this instance, the lighting is much more noticeable, causing half of the witch's face to be almost black. Once again, this side lighting further contributes to the horror of the scene. Director Tim Burton uses side lighting in various instances throughout "The Witch's Eye" to convey a spine–chilling mood to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Symbolism Of Water In Big Fish Essay In "Big Fish", Daniel Wallace utilizes water as a recurring theme to reveal that Edward Bloom truly represents the book's title. The story of Big Fish has had a great deal of meaning in my life because I was just in the First Stage production last spring which was a retelling of the 1998 tale. The novel Big Fish revolves around Edward Bloom, a well known teller of tales, and his middle–aged son William, a pessimistic businessman who is out on a quest to find the true meaning of his father's massive stories. Edward Bloom was to a sense a golden child, he remembers every man's name, he could run fast, speak in front of crowds, and was a mighty charmer with the ladies. But the thing that William cannot wrap his head around is why his father must always be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... William will soon come to realize that his father's stories were not far from the truth. He really did tame a giant, he meets a so–called mermaid and meets and marries the girl of his dreams, Sandra. The object which I brought in, a water bottle, is used to signify the many water symbols in the novel. Water could well be one of the most present and identifiable concepts in the Big Fish story line. I believe the active motion symbolizes Edwards ambition to see every continent and meet everyone in the world. I also found that it represents the quiet, steady personality of Will. Edward is somehow always finding his way back to water throughout the novel. The first scene of the novel begins at the banks of a river where Edward and Will are resting after a hike. He sets his feet in the water and smiles, a smile that William proclaims he has never seen before. Edward then says "this reminds me..." but never finishes his thought, leaving the reader hanging as to what the story would have been. Another water reference was when Edward sees the beautiful women, the supposed mermaid, in the water and saves her from a snake. This tale occurs in a river near his hometown of Ashland Alabama.
