In New on the Job: A School Library Media Specialist's Guide to Success, Ruth Toor and Hilda
Weisburg present a one–stop manual for first–year school library that details numerous aspects of
what it means to be a successful school library media specialist. The authors, both of whom are
veteran former school librarians, outline everything from the job interview to the last day of school,
sharing years of wisdom and practical insight into the ins and outs of the profession. Special
attention is paid to developing relationships between the various members of the school population
and associated individuals, including students, teachers, administrators, school board members,
parents, and volunteers. The authors remind school librarians to keep ... Show more content on

The authors rely heavily on acronyms to denote familiar terms such as "library media center" and
"school library media program." While fairly intuitive and easy to figure out, some readers may
become distracted and/or frustrated by their frequent usage. Similarly, some users may not be
familiar with references to the American Library Association's Information Power document, which
the authors presuppose the readers know. Fortunately, they do a good job of quoting and explaining
the concepts from this document that they present. One unfortunate inclusion is the use of the term
"white bread" in the discussion of racial diversity within the teaching staff on page 40. Some
readers, such as myself, may find this term to be mildly offensive, as it seems to imply that a mostly
white faculty is a bad thing in and of itself. While it is an unfortunate reality that minority groups
are often grossly underrepresented amongst professional educators in our nation's schools, it does
not follow that more diverse teachers are necessarily better teachers. Another concern I have is that
at times the authors seem to be encouraging new librarians to create more work for themselves than
is necessary or professionally healthy, even doing so occurs within the context of building
relationships with other staff (such as the suggestion to take on unwanted jobs from the technology
department on page 159). Furthermore, it may be that the information on national and state
standards is somewhat outdated given the rise of Common Core, but the general ideas presented
about standards should still apply. Finally, I personally struggled to follow the discussion and
visualize the process of doing a paper–based inventory system, primarily because I have never seen
it done before. Perhaps others would have a better idea of what goes on then and there. Of course, as
schools become more and more automated

Steve Kolowich's What Students Don T Know
What is google? Google is a search engine that is used to help direct you to any particular
information that you are willing to locate in its search bar. Many individuals such as students,
teachers, librarians, and etc. use this search engine to gather and broaden their information whether
it's from the web or a scholarly source on this search engine. People who search on the web needs to
know what information literacy is before they perform most of their searching's because it is
important to know the information that we are curious to about and how they can find it just about
anywhere. Not all information is right information, meaning that we have to be smarter with what
we are searching. There are a few important things that I would like ... Show more content on

What the author found was that the internet is making people who search for information on it
foolish & stupid because even though the searching information is faster than finding information in
a library, student would click on the top three results on the first page and keep that information
because it may look good instead of going deeper to find more information. What they are arguing
is that information is a liberal art and it should be used to broaden our skill set that will help student
be effective and responsible user when searching for

Laura Bush: Teacher Librarian And First Lady Analysis
Laura Bush: Teacher, Librarian, and First Lady is about George Bush's wife, Laura Bush, who
worked very hard for the life she is living today. It all started off when she was a young girl; she
always put others before herself and treated others they way she wanted to be treated. Laura was
very intelligent at a young age; furthermore, she memorized the first and last names of every student
in her class as a kindergartner. Later on in her life she was involved in a tragic car accident, which
sadly killed her close friend and past boyfriend, Mike Douglas. Years later, she graduated from
Southern Methodist University with a bachelor's degree in education, and University of Texas in
Austin with a master of library science degree. In August

The Librarian From The Black Lagoon Analysis
This has brought controversy to many for the fact that on one side books can be full of information
and from the other side it can create the wrong image towards another person. In the kids book "The
LIbrarian from the Black Lagoon" written by Mike Thaler a librarian is described as a kid laminator
"they say she laminates you if you talk in the library" (5). or when they say "She also has rubber
stamps on the soles of her shoes. And whenever she steps...it says OVERDUE" (7). A librarian
being described this way can infact instill fear into some people and although its just a kid's book
people stay with this image of a librarian. It makes people assume that they are some type of rude
person. Another example of stereotypes that includes librarians is that they are all women who sit
around doing nothing more than checking books in and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many may think this way, however Mona goes on saying that "to be a librarian you need more than
just a passion for reading. For example, I have a completion certificate as a librarian tech. its up to
up to librarians to keep up with both book trends as well as technology." As for librarians only being
women, Mona believes that although both men and women can be librarians women do the job
better. She continues by comparing teachers saying that although both men and women can be
teacher it doesn't mean they're both good at the job. Not all is correct, however because according to
Lorelle R. Swader writer of the online article Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today "Men
in nontraditional professions such as nursing and librarianship have become easy targets for
stereotyping, creating a vicious cycle" (1). A cycle that continues through any carrier or situation

Reflection About Reading
"You have to read 10 hours this week" said my first grade teacher. In elementary school reading logs
were what all the teachers made us do. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I
however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my
mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs.
Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary
school reading never came easy too me. My mom would always say "The more you read, the better
you'll be." but I never listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. We would have book
fairs in our school library and I would always ask my grandma to come and buy me a bunch of
books, but in reality I never even read the books that she bought me. I would wonder around the
library looking for the perfect book then once I thought I found one, I would read one chapter then
be done with it. Most of the time the books would just sit in my room until I got a letter from the
librarian saying that the book was past due. Then when I went to return a book, the librarian would
always ask "How did you like the book?" and I would reply "It was great I really enjoyed it!", even
though I had never even finished the book. In Mrs. Daugherty's freshman college prep English class
reading was what the majority of the class consisted of. We were always reading passages and

This article discusses the future role of the library media specialist, which describes that they need
to have a bigger role in education. Many believe that librarians are the original specialists so they
call it "the information perspective" (Lowe, 2000). This is where the library media specialists look
at the curriculum, assignments, and learning in terms of information resources, processes, and
technologies required for student success. The library media specialists are going to be the
"pioneers" in teaching information skills and integrating technology skills to the information for
problem–solving process (Lowe, 2000). Gary Hartzell, a professor at University of Nebraska,

Many schools can not afford more staff to come to their schools and libraries. I would have the
librarians who are already there have them become the specialists. The libraries can be very helpful
because it has so much information and librarians can be very helpful because they can obtain so
much information and are there to help everyone. Overall, I think that the specialist will be very
useful for the future of education.

Liz Pape, CEO, created the virtual high school. "She believes that it is full of great content, the

students are leaving the schools and getting all of their education online. In 1997, there were about

Essay On Banning Books
Since 1982, all kinds of books have been banned for the content they hold. Topics like race, sexually
explicit content, homosexualaity, religion and more. Books are banned by librarians and teachers
because they do not want children or teenagers to read about these topics. Children and teenagers
are told they are not supposed to read these books with harsh topics because they are afraid it could
influence them. They are afraid that books that talk about suicide, like 13 Reasons Why, will
influence teenagers into committing suicide. Books being banned does not mean teenagers or
children will not be able to get ahold of them some way. Just because certain books have topics
teacher, librarians, and parents do not like, does not mean they should be banned from teenagers and
children to read and learn about. Books with these topics can introduce children and teenagers ...

They get banned because of the naked truth of their subjects. Stories that touch on the harsh reality
of racism are deemed inappropriate for school. "The classics have one thing in common: they say
something humanity needs to hear, and they say it masterfully," Was stated in one of the articles.
The classics, along with other stories about the history of the world, tell us things we do not want to
hear. Because of books using harsh topics like what is going on with the world, they get banned
from libraries and schools. Banning books about the world's past and present will not, and does not
change a single thing, other than the children or teenager being under educated over the subjects.
Banning books that include subjects about the US history, and rough patches that America and other
countries have hit does not change the fact that they happened. Not allowing teenagers, and children
to read these books is only harming them in the long

Effective school librarians actively engage in collaboration with various entities to support students'
educational growth. Teachers, administrators, architects, information technology, and the
community are all possible partners of school librarians in supporting the advancement of student's
education as well as ensuring that they become lifelong learners. However, school librarians must
partner with germane sources that will help support the curriculum of the school. In the articles for

School librarians and teachers can collaborate in instruction that will support school and national
curriculum standards. Furthermore, school librarians who have expert knowledge of the schools'
curriculum as well as national learning standards will be able to form more effective partnerships
with teachers. Boyner (2015) asserts, "Knowing the school's overarching mission, individual
department goals and objectives, as well as the guiding curricular framework is a crucial first step
for winning teacher buy–in" (p.63). The collaboration between the school librarian and language
arts faculty equipped high school students with many of the skills that they would need to perform
successful college level research. For a school librarian to become a leader, they must collaborate
with classroom teachers and gain their support for the School Library Program (SLP).
The principal can be a school librarian's biggest advocate for the SLP or they can view the SLP
program as a waste of funding that could be better spent on other resources. According to Lupton
(52), "Principals said that they needed the funding invested in the teacher–librarian to be used for
teaching. They pointed out that they could hire a library assistant to undertake the library functions"
(52). Accordingly, school librarians need to demonstrate to school

School Library Media Centers
When it comes to schools and evaluations, most people would think of student evaluations like the
end–of–course exams or the ACT or the ever controversial teacher performance evaluations. There
could be a more important evaluation system than these, however, because this evaluation can
directly affect both teacher and student performance and as such, the overall rating of the school: the
assessment of the school library media center. School libraries have been given a lofty order.
According the U.S. Department of Education's Evaluation and Selection of Learning Resources, it
should be the library's goal to "provide an instructional program and learning sources that promote
the enjoyment of reading and enable learners to become critical and creative thinkers as well as
effective users of information in all formats". To reach this mandate, library media specialists should
maintain both a formative and summative evaluation system that details not only how the materials
and resources in the library are fulfilling the needs of their particular district, but also how the
librarian is utilizing their unique role within the school culture to promote curriculum development
and support. School library media centers vary across the country and even across school districts.
No school library is identical to another, nor are a single districts libraries needs the same across the
board. For example, an elementary level library has very different needs and expectations from a

My Personal Experience Of Reading : My Experience With...
In the topic of reading, I see myself as someone who has the ability and potential to become a great
reader but, has trouble settling on a book that I find enjoyable. Recently I do feel that I have been
improving but, in the past, my history with reading was not the greatest. Unfortunately, I still cannot
say reading is a hobby of mine but, I hope that in the upcoming years that will change. In my
younger years, my experience with reading was that the teacher would assign the class a specific
book and I would force myself to read. I feel like this is a big factor in the way I saw reading getting
up to this stage, as back then I found reading as homework which was like a punishment. I want to
be able to move away from that mentality and start reading for the enjoyment. In the past couple
years, I started recognizing different types of books that fit my interests and what gets me hooked. I
love books that are deep and meaningful, books that will keep one thinking and are unpredictable. I
have noticed that most books that I tend to love are non – fiction because, in my opinion, these types
of books hold the most interesting stories and have the most meaning. Lately, I have been trying to
strengthen my patience in getting over books to quickly, I feel like improving this will also help me
find more interests in different types/genres of books. I feel that my biggest weakness is
comprehension. I struggle when it comes to finding the meaning of a book or a poem when they are

Personal Narrative: I Love Barney Books Around Pre-School
Tap. Tap. My fingers musically tap the spine of the book as I sit curled up on my bed. Thump.

In 5th grade, I remember that our visiting times to the school library decreased and so did my urge
to read. I almost forgot how it felt to be reading books of my own choice. The only time when I
would read was when my teacher would assign a specific chapter to read of the book Wonder, and a
worksheet. Filling out a worksheet after reading or while reading is like a punishment, the sheet is
not letting me enjoy what i'm reading. Instead it's made me a working machine, trying to pick out
small details throughout the book. As I recall, I stopped reading for my own pleasure at that time.
However the next year, 6th grade, in Language Arts we would visit the library once a month, or I
would visit during the quiet S.T.A.R time to pick out a book. I picked off where I left off in my
reading journey and starting reading again! I realized then, my interest in book genres had changed.
Why, I was more interested in books taking place in middle school/high school, meaning that I
enjoyed realistic fiction. Continuing on reading, I transitioned into 7th grade. In 7th grade I kept on
reading more and more, I even kept a chart of the books I read! My Language Arts teacher also read
along with the class with her own books and also encouraged me. Infact, both of my middle school

Megan McArdle states "During the time when people are supposed to be learning to face an often

against your beliefs, then you won't be able to adapt to the really world. The real world is all about
adapting and learning with many different people that are very different from you. JW Wilson, from

Classroom Use Of Technology Has Exploded Over The Past Few...
Classroom use of technology has exploded over the past few years. Though the number of devices
found in a classroom depends on the school budget, chances are that most modern classrooms utilize
at least a few different types of technology. Laptops and computers, tablets, smartphones, interactive
boards, and other learning devices have become integral to the education system. In 1983, Dr.
Howard Gardner proposed a theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner, a professor of education at
Harvard, theorized that an individual's intelligence cannot simply be defined by a simple IQ test.
Instead, he believed that there are several different types of intelligence, including linguistic,
interpersonal, and logical–mathematical, along with four other categories. If one is not tested in a
practical way suited to their particular type of intelligence, it may appear as if they are not
intelligent. This is evident is schools across the nation – some students may excel in mathematics or
English, while others may perform better in the arts. Dr. Gardner's went on to explain that traditional
testing is not an accurate representation of one's abilities. Alternatively, he suggested regular
assessment in place of the usual tests. Lynn Gilman wrote her overview of Gardner's theory that
"assessment elicits information about an individual 's abilities in the context of actual performance
rather than by proxy using formal instruments in a de–contextualized setting." This distinction may

The Library Portal As We Know It Today Is Unsustainable
"Put simply, the library portal as we know it today is unsustainable. It, along with a host of other
indicators such as declines in reference questions and shifts from print to e–resources, signals that
for academic libraries a 'let's just keep doing business as usual' mentality is a sure path to
obsolescence." (Bell via Tumbleson, p. 974)
The Issue:
The Association of College and Research Libraries' guidelines for the provision of library services
to distance learners states that services "must be equivalent to those provided for students and
faculty in traditional campus settings" (ACRL, 2008). With the demographics of students changing
to include increasing amounts of online and distance learners, as well as a more diversified range of
ages of students, no one way of instruction or library interaction is going to assuage every user's
expectations within this diverse group. This shift creates the need to re–examine the core services
offered by academic libraries such as information literacy, effective searching strategies and
reference help. Libraries can no longer rely on just their in–person reference and research services.
Seal (2008) best defines this shift from 'reference and instruction to learning and engagement' (p.
257). An emerging solution for this shift is the embedded librarian.
Lewis (2007) among others, presents the embedded librarian as the up and coming model for
academic library services when he attempts to outline a strategy for academic libraries to

One great thing about this article was that it discussed the idea of having literacy stations in the
library which would help increase students "critical thinking, problem–solving, and research skills"
(Parrott & Keith, 2015, p 15). Literacy stations in the library would be a wonderful way for students
to be more engaged and enjoy the idea of spending time in the library. Librarians and teachers could
collaborate to build different activities ranging from computer stations to listening stations to visual
art stations that would make the student's trips to the library more enjoyable. This would also
provide the librarian an opportunity to get to know the individual students better which in turn
would give the librarian a chance to recommend different types of books to students with more
confidence. (Parrott & Keith, 2015) The final article I selected examined the effects of achievement
on reading instruction. The purpose of the study was to see if a classroom that was based on student
interest and independent work abilities could replace the standard curriculum being used within a
classroom. Specifically the research was studying the effects of student's fluency and
comprehension skills when given free will on their reading choices. (Little, McCoach, and Reis,
2014) The results showed that in regards to comprehension there was little to no change in the
student 's abilities. However, in fluency skills, students who had more input in what they read had

School Library Vs. School Libraries
The overall goal of any school library is to provide a space where students can grow and learn
through the use of various information resources. School libraries, their funding and involvement in
schools has changed in the past decades and continues to change and grow into the future. With the
continual shift towards using more technology and the way in which we are consuming and using
information only enhances the need for school libraries to continue to play a vital role in providing
access to information and ideas for our students, teachers and schools. As technology continues to
change and affect the needs of students and teachers, it is important for school libraries to embrace
that change and participate in the change while still remembering their overall purpose and serving
the students and community to the best of their ability.
First, it is important to establish and understand the history, standards, and evolution of school
libraries and school media specialists in the United States. School libraries have a history of
constant change and fluctuating support. The American Association of School Librarians (AASL)
became a subset of the American Library Association in 1951 (Taylor, 2015). Shortly thereafter,
they published standards for school libraries that emphasized that school library media programs
should be student centered, focusing on enriching the development of individual students. The
school librarian's role should include that of teacher, being jointly

Literature Review On Social Media
INTRODUCTION
Social media in today's sociality has become our primary means of communicating. It has also
become the most inexpensive way to market and promote argues Chu & Du (2017). More studies
argue that social media has simplified the way to connect to students, and offers the quickest way to
for universities and colleges to spread information to students (Chu & Du, 2013). Che & Du (2013)
also argues that social media is catching on within academic libraries around the globe. Their
research showed that 71.1% of academic libraries were already using social media to connect and
engage with students (Chu & Du, 2013). While Stvilla & Gibradze (2017) agrees, they also state
how important it is for librarians to stay updated with the latest trends of social media to connect
with students. While connecting with students is a very important in marketing events, it's just as
important to ensure these events are marketable to students, that spark interest. (Andrews, 2014).
In this research paper, I will further explore academic library events and the influence that social
media has on these events. Interest on this research started from Bodnar & Mathews (2008) article
on relationships between school newspapers and their academic libraries. From the finding in their
research, they found that 25% of articles that mentioned the library were about library events and
displays (Bodnar & Mathews, 2008). From this information, I further explore the 25% of library
events, and found a

Schools Need 21st Century Materials And Resources
Schools need 21st century materials and resources to serve 21st century students. There needs to be
a change in ideology regarding the function of the library in todays society. "For centuries, libraries
have remained essentially separate, even competing with one another to establish and maintain the
greatest collection, and now they need to recast themselves as platforms rather than storehouses.
(Palfrey, 2015) With the introduction of the internet and online information libraries need to rebrand
themselves. Libraries around the world can now share information with one another in real time,
and the competition for resources has ended. That said, there is still value in networking with other
agencies devoted to education and information. John Palfrey, author of Biblio Tech suggests that,
"Libraries must act as ambitiously networked institutions, connecting their network effectively with
partner intuitions: archives, historical societies, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations."

Stakeholder Analysis
Picture the face of a student receiving a research paper, not to thrilling, some will start sooner than
others but everyone must start their research papers somehow and some way. Google means "to
search" and now in days it can be used for browsing, personal computing, email, and broadband
networking (Krazit). Years ago when internet and Google did not exist students actually went to the
library to not only study but to get and look through books. That is how students got their research
for papers, while students today use the internet and mostly Google. Now when students go to the
library they use it for a study area and internet access. Walking into the library ... Show more

The final stakeholder could be students who attend college now. The students now want the same
thing as the students back then, to get good grades and study hard. Students now believe that
libraries are used for the internet and a quiet place to study. Most students only use library databases
if it is required by the teacher. Students today would say that Google is a reliable source and that it
is easier to use than databases. Current students have more available options than the other
stakeholders because they are a part of the new generation. Like the other stakeholders, students still
use the library even with the technology changing. Jenny Platt is currently attending CSU and is in
the class of 2015. She doesn't go to the library but if she did she said she would get on her computer
and go to google to start her research. She said she does not check books out from the library
because the internet is easier (Platt). Platt says "The library has better information but Google is just
faster and more convenient." After taking a survey on the Facebook page for the class of 2015, at
CSU, the students were more likely to start their research by using google instead of library
databases and books. Out of the 32 students who responded, 27 said google, 4 said library databases

Analysis Of Sittig Libs 6991 Internship Reflection
Sittig LIBS 6991 Internship Reflection
I began my MLS program two semesters before moving from a school–based technology facilitator
into an elementary school media coordinator position. I served as a media coordinator for an
elementary school three years before moving into the role of a district technology facilitator. In my
current position, I work with a team of three other district technology facilitators. We each have a
curriculum focus, mine is media. I work with media coordinators across the district and advocate for
our district's media programs.
It is with a heavy heart that I write this reflection. This journey has been incredible, and a learning

As I began my internship at the middle school level, I had an expectation that middle school
students would leisurely stroll through the library, check out books, and a media coordinator would
assist students from multiple classrooms in doing research. I also envisioned the shelves would be
filled with upper level chapter books and a large nonfiction section would prominently display
books that support the various facets of the curriculum. This was not a fulfilled expectation.
The current media coordinator is pulled for various duties outside of the role that would be
described within her evaluation rubric. Testing encompasses many days within the school year. She
acts as one of the testing coordinators and is responsible for not only administering tests, but also as
coordinating placement of students and collecting materials. She also acts as the in–school
suspension teacher during part of the day, technology facilitator, and as a substitute for classes.
Throughout her day, students and teachers constantly flow into the library for her to repair devices
and troubleshoot programs. She also must cover classes during the day when teachers are pulled for
meetings or other outside duties.
One advantage of the role a media coordinator plays in the school, is that she assumes a leadership
position and provides input in the school improvement plan and is involved in creating policies at
the school level. She handles some types of administrative

Argument and Collaboration Essay
In the library there are many "evidence and arguments that collaboration pays dividends. Library
impact research demonstrates that collaboration is essential in maximizing the positive impact of
library media programs on student achievement and school success. Unfortunately, both the
organizational structure and the culture in most schools discourage collaborative efforts among
faculty members. Conference participants wishing to promote increased collaboration in their
schools may need to draw on a variety of material to use in crafting their arguments." (Hartzell,

CHAPTER III:
METHODS
Introduction
Chapter two discussed how today's learners are not changing but the way in which they learn is.
Integrating 21st century skills into the media framework is one way to keep the curriculum relevant
and engaging. This chapter outlines three projects that show how integrating 21st century skills in
the elementary media framework can create authentic and meaningful learning experiences. Project
one is the creation of a scope and sequence for the use of an elementary media specialist teaching
grades kindergarten through fifth. Project two is the culmination of 24 step– by– step lessons that
integrate with the scope and sequence. Lastly, project three includes 24 assessment options that

There are also iPads, desktop computers, document cameras, and Smartboards available for teacher
use. Within this scope and sequence each of the available technologies will be used.
Methodology for analysis and evaluation: The media curriculum content presented in this portfolio
aligns with current ISD 659 media curriculum maps and the mission statement of Northfield Public
Schools:
"The mission of the Northfield Public Schools Media Program is to help all users become effective,
ethical consumers and producers of information, motivated readers, and life–long learners in our
ever–changing world" ("Mission Statement," n.d).
In addition to the alignment of ISD 659 curriculum maps and mission statements; Information
Technology Educators of Minnesota and American Association of School Librarians Standards for
the 21st– Century will also be used as a method of analysis and evaluation during the creation of the
elementary scope and sequence.
Context for implementation: These products were designed during the 2016–2017 school year;
however, implementation is planned for the 2017–2018 school year. The scope and sequence acts as
a guide for the practicing media specialist in implementation of 21st century skills and deployment
of library media skills connected with classroom content standards. The framework offers
suggestions for implementation set forth by the library media standards (AASL). This

Essay on Information Literacy and the Public Library
The American Association for School Libraries defines information literacy as the ability to use
many types of reference resources and literacies to find information. The different types of reference
resources and literacies include: digital, visual, textual, and technological literacies. The American
Association for School Libraries has four main learning standards. The first covers inquiry, thinking
critically, and gaining knowledge. The second standard includes drawing conclusions, making
informal decisions, applying knowledge to new situations, and creating new knowledge. The third
standard asks students to be able to share knowledge and participate ethically. It also requires them
to be productive as members of our democratic society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"There is evidence of a wide range of information literacy focused programs in public libraries
worldwide" (Harding, p. 157). Indeed, libraries across the United States are finding ways to provide
their communities with the necessary information literacy programs. Harding (2008) points out that
these library programs are "providing information literacy support", and "they have the opportunity
to foster the lifelong learning of their communities" (p. 157). The public library has great strengths
when it comes to providing information literacy programming. Public libraries have been
considered the place to go for continuing education for an extremely long time. Public libraries
reach a large range of people on a daily basis. Harding (2008) points out that the library "has a wide
diversity of clientele and the potential to reach all sections of the community from children to older
adults, and across minority groups and educational and professional levels." (p. 159) For many
children, a public library is their first experience with learning in a group environment. Oftentimes,
community members are loyal to one library and this allows librarians to foster long lasting
relationships with them. Harding (2008) also suggests that "public libraries have the opportunity to
provide one on one instruction during client–librarian interactions such as reference interviews" (p.
160).This one on one instruction is another way

Banned Books Essay
Banned Books
The problems with banned books has been a controversial issue between parents as well as adults.
The concerns that parents have are with the fact that these certain books are to be banned to keep
their kids from being exposed to some of the ways of the world. Some of the concerns that these
parents have are with usage of some derrogatory words or lanuguage not preferrred by some
parents. The things that parents fail to realize is that by law, a librarian has the responsibility that
they must uphold; including their responsibilty to the stocking of books on their shelves. I would

"Criteria may include popular demand, ensuring diversity in the collection, available space and
budget." These policies must be approved by the library or school governing board, which is made
up of community representatives.
The responsibility rests with the library director or school superintendent, who regulates the
selection to appropriate staff acting within the framework of the established policies. In schools,
librarians work closely with teachers and school administrators to provide collections that support
and supplement the school's curriculum.
The majority of books and other materials selected have been reviewed and recommended by
professional librarians or reviewers. The selection is an process, in which librarians look for
materials that will provide a broad range of viewpoints and topics. This means that while library
collections have thousands of items families want, like and need, they also will have materials that
some parents may find offensive to them or inappropriate for their children. Because an item is
selected does not mean the librarian accepts or promotes it. He or she is simply helping the library
to fulfill its mission of providing information from all points of view. The ALA organization
provides a standard in which librarians follow. These standards are sometimes recognized as the
librarian bill of rights. these ALA rights state that:

A Defining Moment Essay
Many people influenced and events my reading and writing development throughout my childhood
from my mother, my elementary librarian, and Sesame Street, to getting my first pair of glasses. We
all have defining moments in our lives where we can look back and say, "That moment changed my
life." This is the story of the defining moment that changed the way I read and write, and I learned it
from a whale!
It was the beginning of my seventh grade year. I was about twelve years old and, I guess you could
say a nerd. I did well in school so I was placed in the Gifted and Talented program with other nerds
in my class. As part of this program we were required to read at a certain level or read a certain
number of books each semester. You ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I thought to myself, hey, I like whales. I've read stories about ships and pirates and stuff before. This
looks like something I might like. I can still smell the old paper and threaded binding resonating in
my mind as I opened the book and scrolled through the pages, soaking in the vibrant illustrations of
what would soon become my obsession for the next six months.
Happy with my selection and feeling fairly proud of myself, I take the book to the check–out desk.
The desk is occupied by the stereotypical librarian. She is an older lady probably in her sixties with
gray wiry hair and half square bi–focal glasses that sit on the end of her nose. As I place the book on
the counter, she looks down her nose and through her glasses at me with a look of skepticism.
Frowning as she speaks, she tells me that maybe I should choose something else. Undaunted, I
refuse and ask to check out the book. She gives a few other suggestions but again, I refuse. She
wishes me luck as she slides it back to me and I stuff the hefty book into my backpack.
I start reading the book and right away it is intimidating from the very first paragraph. I am faced
with language and sentence structure I do not understand, what is a bedfellow and why does he
carry a purse? Is he gay? Immediately I am second guessing my decision but I am determined to get
through this book. It takes me the better part of a week to get through the first chapter. I

Non-Profit Organization Case Study
As the librarian for my city during a time when the city is struggling and not connecting, I would
need to make some changes to the program. I would begin by looking at the neighborhood including
the demographics. As the librarian, I would not be able to dedicate myself fully to organizing or
implanting changes within the library so, I would need to consider hiring volunteers that can assist
with collaborating with other city agencies and local non–profit organizations.
When considering budget cutbacks over the last few years, I would not have the financial capability
to create certain programs without the assistance of grant funding, donations, or cooperation from
outside organizations. Offering computer courses or kids projects for a fee, could benefit the
financial situation of the library, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the stakeholders involved in their agency to ensure that they would be supportive in the new
community based efforts taking place at the library, these groups would fit well together because
they are working towards a common goal and have some of the same interests.
I would form the coalition by using the internet to reach out to possible organizations and agencies.
I would consider using Web 2.0. According to our text, "it will allow for personal and professional

Summary: According to Viele (2012), she states that when it comes to information literacy, there
seems to be an abundance of definitions. The most concise and all–encompassing meaning is that
information fluency is a set of skills necessitating individuals to be able to distinguish when and
what actual information is needed. The author states that an individual should be capable to
effectively locate, evaluate, and use the needed information in making informed decisions that are
invaluable throughout life. In any situation whether it be preparing a presentation for class, a poster,
or writing a report, these steps should be completed in an ethical manner. In the article, the author
breaks down each of the information fluency skills in component parts. She also provides
explanations of how to do each with online tutorials links, helpful websites, and examples for
reference of good places to start when making sure that each skill is preformed effectively.
Critique: Retired as a physics and astronomy librarian at Cornell University, Patricia Viele, has
worked with Cornell faculty, students and numerous K–12 teachers for many years. The article

Information Processing Models Essay
One of the AASL's standards for 21st century learners is [they will] "inquire, think critically, and
gain knowledge" and "follow an inquiry– based process in seeking knowledge in curricular subjects,
and make the real–world connection for using this process in [his/her] own life." (ALA, 2007, p. 4)
Three research process models that help students make independent choices, ask questions, find
resources, and discover information are the Big6™, Kuhlthau's Information Search Process, and I–
Search. This paper will compare and contrast these models and discuss their use in teaching students
to research on their own.

and extracting relevant information. Synthesis takes into account organizing from multiple sources
and presenting the information. Finally, Evaluation entails judging the product for effectiveness and
judging the process for efficiency. (Wurster, 2011)
Librarians, teachers, and students can all benefit from the Big6™ process as it helps to identify
goals, hunt for, use and collect information and then reflect on that information with the presentation
of the information. Teachers and librarians benefit because they can use it at any grade level, with
any subject, with any state or national standards, and it complements any curriculum. Students
benefit because the Big6™ assures they understand the assignment, complete the project,
assignment, or activity, and discuss the process. In addition, students can know if they missed a step
of the process, self–asses their work, recognize reliable information, cite sources, divide an
assignment into easily managed parts, and feel confident in their work. (Wurster, 2011)
Kuhlthau's Information Search Process (ISP)
A very well known research process is Kuhlthau's Information Search Process (ISP). Kuhlthau uses
six stages to present the user's physical, mental, and social view of information seeking. The stages
are 1) task initiation, 2) selection, 3) exploration, 4) focus formulation, 5) collection, and 6)
presentation.

Censorship In Olive's Ocean
There are many books that have been banned or challenged nationwide. Books get banned and
challenged for a variety of reasons. Olive's Ocean, by Kevin Henkes, was removed from the shelves
due to several claims of it having sexual content and inappropriate language. A challenge is an
attempt to remove or restrict materials based on the objections of a person or group. A challenge
against a book is a formal written complaint that requests a book to be removed. Challenges aren't

Instructional Coaches And Teacher Librarians
In the surprisingly positive aftermath of a recent interview with Scott Munro and a plethora of
Elementary principals I was encouraged to present a proposal to you with regard to ways in which I
may be able to offer my support as our district moves toward digital personalized learnings. It was
both a stroke of genius and a gamble for the district to encode both Instructional Coaches and
Teacher Librarians into more pivotal roles in the LIFT initiative. Both of those roles have an
obvious and important presence in the new world order of digitally integrated schools and both
groups perceive themselves as suffering from a mix of ambivalence and ambiguity within our
district. By offering both collectives a voice in the development of a new framework for their jobs,
you have been able to win back some of those that felt marginalized and clarified the road ahead for
those more reluctant to change. That the district has taken the time to understand and listen before
pushing forward with redefining what has been for many as much an identity as a profession is a
testament to the district's effort and desire to not simply enforce change to do so in a thoughtful way.
That you have chosen to use those newly defined role in such a lynchpin between the theory and
application of personalized learning is a statement of their inherent value and your faith in their
ability. There is, naturally, a risk offering this new team as a conduit to smoother digital migrations

A University Of A Campus Statue Essay
Every day millions of people in the world are making an impact and difference that should be
recognized and honored. To continue, this is the reason why there are so many statues in the world,
including in art museums, in libraries, and even on the campuses of colleges, to show forth the
honor and respect people have towards them for making a difference in their lives. For instance, a
campus statue represents a symbolism to an individual who has made an impact on the grounds of a
college campus that will be remembered for a life time. In this case, Columbus State University
located in Columbus, Georgia, should have a campus statue in honor of a person who brought so
much life on the premises of this college that can impact every life that steps foot here. However,
there is a possibility of four people who can represent this statue: Callie McGinnis, Robert Arnold,
Walter Richards, and William Clifford Tucker. To begin, Callie McGinnis is currently still present
on Earth and was Columbus State University 's first Dean of Librarian who moved to the city of
Columbus, Georgia from New Orleans, Louisiana to work as a reference librarian on July 1, 1974 to
January 5, 2010. On the other hand, Robert Arnold was a public educator/teacher for 27 years and

the year of 1911. In addition, when he passed away due to health reasons, the high school was

Pros And Cons Of Banning Books
Warning! Some May Consider this Paper Dangerous
What do The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Fahrenheit 451 all have in common?
These highly popular books have all been banned from libraries in the United States. Libraries and
schools in different states are banning books that are considered "inappropriate" to students for a
variety of reasons. The main reason that teachers and librarians ban books is to protect students from
facing challenged or difficult ideas. Some people believe that banning books is a good thing and
helps the students, while other individuals believe book banning is a bad idea and this action has a
negative effect on a society. Book banning is unacceptable because librarians and teachers ban
books for their content, and not for their effect on students.
According to the other of "Banned and Challenged Books", every year librarians take manners into
their own hands and report hundreds of books containing inappropriate content in hope of banning
them from school and public libraries, as well as school curriculums. When libraries and schools
attempt to remove or restrict a book from the curriculum or library based upon the objections of a
person's point of view, the book is considered a challenged book. A book is only considered banned
once it has been completely removed from its previous location. Librarians are motivated to
challenge material with the desire to protect children from inappropriate sexual content, offensive

Negative Consequences Of Banning Books

Since librarians choose what books make it onto the shelves, they have a small influence on what

there is not there. A certain author named Barry Lyga experienced this. After writing a book called

It is possible that due to this lack of collaboration, the school library is not fulfilling its potential role
as a result of the failure to integrate its activities within the schools plans for teaching and learning.
Schools must adopt the educational philosophy that the library plan is fully integrated into the
educational program. This integration strengthens the teaching/learning process so that students can
develop the vital skills necessary to locate, analyse, evaluate, interpret, and communicate
information and ideas. When the library is fully integrated into the instructional program of the

However, it was adopted by COPE in July of 2001. With a 70th anniversary of ALA Code of Ethics
coming in 2009, the committee is debating if the Code of Ethics should be revised or not. There are
many the comments from the ALA members that involve two minor language changes and an
expansion of Article IV. However, these changes were adopted on January 22, 2008. In conclusion,
it is important for all types of librarians to know the Code of Ethics and enforce them in workplace.
Issues of ALA Code of Ethics One of the three issues by ALA Code of Ethics is called Access
Issues. Access Issues deal directly to the first three articles in the Code of Ethics. In Article I, it
expresses the need for librarians to provide equal services to all library users. Therefore, that as a
profession we must be accurate and courteous to all patron requests, regardless of our personal
feelings and beliefs. As a profession, librarians must strive to help all library patrons to find the
materials they need. Article II has many consequences to all types of libraries everywhere such as
school, public, and so on. Intellectual Freedom is everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and

  • 1. Ruth Toor In New on the Job: A School Library Media Specialist's Guide to Success, Ruth Toor and Hilda Weisburg present a one–stop manual for first–year school library that details numerous aspects of what it means to be a successful school library media specialist. The authors, both of whom are veteran former school librarians, outline everything from the job interview to the last day of school, sharing years of wisdom and practical insight into the ins and outs of the profession. Special attention is paid to developing relationships between the various members of the school population and associated individuals, including students, teachers, administrators, school board members, parents, and volunteers. The authors remind school librarians to keep ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The authors rely heavily on acronyms to denote familiar terms such as "library media center" and "school library media program." While fairly intuitive and easy to figure out, some readers may become distracted and/or frustrated by their frequent usage. Similarly, some users may not be familiar with references to the American Library Association's Information Power document, which the authors presuppose the readers know. Fortunately, they do a good job of quoting and explaining the concepts from this document that they present. One unfortunate inclusion is the use of the term "white bread" in the discussion of racial diversity within the teaching staff on page 40. Some readers, such as myself, may find this term to be mildly offensive, as it seems to imply that a mostly white faculty is a bad thing in and of itself. While it is an unfortunate reality that minority groups are often grossly underrepresented amongst professional educators in our nation's schools, it does not follow that more diverse teachers are necessarily better teachers. Another concern I have is that at times the authors seem to be encouraging new librarians to create more work for themselves than is necessary or professionally healthy, even doing so occurs within the context of building relationships with other staff (such as the suggestion to take on unwanted jobs from the technology department on page 159). Furthermore, it may be that the information on national and state standards is somewhat outdated given the rise of Common Core, but the general ideas presented about standards should still apply. Finally, I personally struggled to follow the discussion and visualize the process of doing a paper–based inventory system, primarily because I have never seen it done before. Perhaps others would have a better idea of what goes on then and there. Of course, as schools become more and more automated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Steve Kolowich's What Students Don T Know What is google? Google is a search engine that is used to help direct you to any particular information that you are willing to locate in its search bar. Many individuals such as students, teachers, librarians, and etc. use this search engine to gather and broaden their information whether it's from the web or a scholarly source on this search engine. People who search on the web needs to know what information literacy is before they perform most of their searching's because it is important to know the information that we are curious to about and how they can find it just about anywhere. Not all information is right information, meaning that we have to be smarter with what we are searching. There are a few important things that I would like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What the author found was that the internet is making people who search for information on it foolish & stupid because even though the searching information is faster than finding information in a library, student would click on the top three results on the first page and keep that information because it may look good instead of going deeper to find more information. What they are arguing is that information is a liberal art and it should be used to broaden our skill set that will help student be effective and responsible user when searching for ... • 3. Laura Bush: Teacher Librarian And First Lady Analysis Laura Bush: Teacher, Librarian, and First Lady is about George Bush's wife, Laura Bush, who worked very hard for the life she is living today. It all started off when she was a young girl; she always put others before herself and treated others they way she wanted to be treated. Laura was very intelligent at a young age; furthermore, she memorized the first and last names of every student in her class as a kindergartner. Later on in her life she was involved in a tragic car accident, which sadly killed her close friend and past boyfriend, Mike Douglas. Years later, she graduated from Southern Methodist University with a bachelor's degree in education, and University of Texas in Austin with a master of library science degree. In August ... • 4. The Librarian From The Black Lagoon Analysis This has brought controversy to many for the fact that on one side books can be full of information and from the other side it can create the wrong image towards another person. In the kids book "The LIbrarian from the Black Lagoon" written by Mike Thaler a librarian is described as a kid laminator "they say she laminates you if you talk in the library" (5). or when they say "She also has rubber stamps on the soles of her shoes. And whenever she steps...it says OVERDUE" (7). A librarian being described this way can infact instill fear into some people and although its just a kid's book people stay with this image of a librarian. It makes people assume that they are some type of rude person. Another example of stereotypes that includes librarians is that they are all women who sit around doing nothing more than checking books in and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many may think this way, however Mona goes on saying that "to be a librarian you need more than just a passion for reading. For example, I have a completion certificate as a librarian tech. its up to up to librarians to keep up with both book trends as well as technology." As for librarians only being women, Mona believes that although both men and women can be librarians women do the job better. She continues by comparing teachers saying that although both men and women can be teacher it doesn't mean they're both good at the job. Not all is correct, however because according to Lorelle R. Swader writer of the online article Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today "Men in nontraditional professions such as nursing and librarianship have become easy targets for stereotyping, creating a vicious cycle" (1). • 5. Reflection About Reading "You have to read 10 hours this week" said my first grade teacher. In elementary school reading logs were what all the teachers made us do. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs. Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary school reading never came easy too me. My mom would always say "The more you read, the better you'll be." but I never listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. We would have book fairs in our school library and I would always ask my grandma to come and buy me a bunch of books, but in reality I never even read the books that she bought me. I would wonder around the library looking for the perfect book then once I thought I found one, I would read one chapter then be done with it. Most of the time the books would just sit in my room until I got a letter from the librarian saying that the book was past due. Then when I went to return a book, the librarian would always ask "How did you like the book?" and I would reply "It was great I really enjoyed it!", even though I had never even finished the book. In Mrs. Daugherty's freshman college prep English class reading was what the majority of the class consisted of. We were always reading passages and would have to answer questions about ... • 6. Source 1: Essay Source 1: This article discusses the future role of the library media specialist, which describes that they need to have a bigger role in education. Many believe that librarians are the original specialists so they call it "the information perspective" (Lowe, 2000). This is where the library media specialists look at the curriculum, assignments, and learning in terms of information resources, processes, and technologies required for student success. The library media specialists are going to be the "pioneers" in teaching information skills and integrating technology skills to the information for problem–solving process (Lowe, 2000). Many schools can not afford more staff to come to their schools and libraries. I would have the librarians who are already there have them become the specialists. The libraries can be very helpful because it has so much information and librarians can be very helpful because they can obtain so much information and are there to help everyone. Overall, I think that the specialist will be very useful for the future of education. Source 2: This article pertains to virtual classrooms in the future. However, future may not be so far after all. Liz Pape, CEO, created the virtual high school. "She believes that it is full of great content, the curriculum is not available to kids in a regular school, it is a chance to interact with people all around the world, and it is a 24/7 learning experience, which makes the environment to include and not exclude" (Fording, 2004). Pape's cyber school is a non–profit organizational that primarily works with educators in traditional high schools to provide a wider variety of courses. More students are leaving the schools and getting all of their education online. In 1997, there were about 710 students involved with 11 states. • 7. Essay On Banning Books Since 1982, all kinds of books have been banned for the content they hold. Topics like race, sexually explicit content, homosexualaity, religion and more. Books are banned by librarians and teachers because they do not want children or teenagers to read about these topics. Children and teenagers are told they are not supposed to read these books with harsh topics because they are afraid it could influence them. They are afraid that books that talk about suicide, like 13 Reasons Why, will influence teenagers into committing suicide. Books being banned does not mean teenagers or children will not be able to get ahold of them some way. Boyner (2015) asserts, "Knowing the school's overarching mission, individual department goals and objectives, as well as the guiding curricular framework is a crucial first step for winning teacher buy–in" (p.63). The collaboration between the school librarian and language arts faculty equipped high school students with many of the skills that they would need to perform successful college level research. For a school librarian to become a leader, they must collaborate with classroom teachers and gain their support for the School Library Program (SLP). The principal can be a school librarian's biggest advocate for the SLP or they can view the SLP program as a waste of funding that could be better spent on other resources. According to Lupton (52), "Principals said that they needed the funding invested in the teacher–librarian to be used for teaching. They pointed out that they could hire a library assistant to undertake the library functions" (52). Accordingly, school librarians need to demonstrate to school ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. School Library Media Centers When it comes to schools and evaluations, most people would think of student evaluations like the end–of–course exams or the ACT or the ever controversial teacher performance evaluations. There could be a more important evaluation system than these, however, because this evaluation can directly affect both teacher and student performance and as such, the overall rating of the school: the assessment of the school library media center. School libraries have been given a lofty order. According the U.S. Department of Education's Evaluation and Selection of Learning Resources, it should be the library's goal to "provide an instructional program and learning sources that promote the enjoyment of reading and enable learners to become critical and creative thinkers as well as effective users of information in all formats". To reach this mandate, library media specialists should maintain both a formative and summative evaluation system that details not only how the materials and resources in the library are fulfilling the needs of their particular district, but also how the librarian is utilizing their unique role within the school culture to promote curriculum development and support. School library media centers vary across the country and even across school districts. No school library is identical to another, nor are a single districts libraries needs the same across the board. For example, an elementary level library has very different needs and expectations from a high ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the topic of reading, I see myself as someone who has the ability and potential to become a great reader but, has trouble settling on a book that I find enjoyable. Recently I do feel that I have been improving but, in the past, my history with reading was not the greatest. Unfortunately, I still cannot say reading is a hobby of mine but, I hope that in the upcoming years that will change. In my younger years, my experience with reading was that the teacher would assign the class a specific book and I would force myself to read. I feel like this is a big factor in the way I saw reading getting up to this stage, as back then I found reading as homework which was like a punishment. I want to be able to move away from that mentality and start reading for the enjoyment. In the past couple years, I started recognizing different types of books that fit my interests and what gets me hooked. I love books that are deep and meaningful, books that will keep one thinking and are unpredictable. I have noticed that most books that I tend to love are non – fiction because, in my opinion, these types of books hold the most interesting stories and have the most meaning. Lately, I have been trying to strengthen my patience in getting over books to quickly, I feel like improving this will also help me find more interests in different types/genres of books. Everything starts to make sense as I put together the pieces of this mystery novel. Ever since I can remember, I have liked reading, however I didn't love it. But my memory does not go back to more than Kindergarten. However if I do try very hard, I faintly do remember loving Barney books around pre–school. In 5th grade, I remember that our visiting times to the school library decreased and so did my urge to read. I almost forgot how it felt to be reading books of my own choice. The only time when I would read was when my teacher would assign a specific chapter to read of the book Wonder, and a worksheet. Filling out a worksheet after reading or while reading is like a punishment, the sheet is not letting me enjoy what i'm reading. Instead it's made me a working machine, trying to pick out small details throughout the book. As I recall, I stopped reading for my own pleasure at that time. However the next year, 6th grade, in Language Arts we would visit the library once a month, or I would visit during the quiet S.T.A.R time to pick out a book. I picked off where I left off in my reading journey and starting reading again! I realized then, my interest in book genres had changed. Why, I was more interested in books taking place in middle school/high school, meaning that I enjoyed realistic fiction. Continuing on reading, I transitioned into 7th grade. In 7th grade I kept on reading more and more, I even kept a chart of the books I read! My Language Arts teacher also read along with the class with her own books and also encouraged me. • 14. Classroom Use Of Technology Has Exploded Over The Past Few... Classroom use of technology has exploded over the past few years. Though the number of devices found in a classroom depends on the school budget, chances are that most modern classrooms utilize at least a few different types of technology. Laptops and computers, tablets, smartphones, interactive boards, and other learning devices have become integral to the education system. In 1983, Dr. Howard Gardner proposed a theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner, a professor of education at Harvard, theorized that an individual's intelligence cannot simply be defined by a simple IQ test. Instead, he believed that there are several different types of intelligence, including linguistic, interpersonal, and logical–mathematical, along with four other categories. If one is not tested in a practical way suited to their particular type of intelligence, it may appear as if they are not intelligent. This is evident is schools across the nation – some students may excel in mathematics or English, while others may perform better in the arts. Dr. Gardner's went on to explain that traditional testing is not an accurate representation of one's abilities. Alternatively, he suggested regular assessment in place of the usual tests. Lynn Gilman wrote her overview of Gardner's theory that "assessment elicits information about an individual 's abilities in the context of actual performance rather than by proxy using formal instruments in a de–contextualized setting." • 15. The Library Portal As We Know It Today Is Unsustainable "Put simply, the library portal as we know it today is unsustainable. It, along with a host of other indicators such as declines in reference questions and shifts from print to e–resources, signals that for academic libraries a 'let's just keep doing business as usual' mentality is a sure path to obsolescence." (Bell via Tumbleson, p. 974) The Issue: The Association of College and Research Libraries' guidelines for the provision of library services to distance learners states that services "must be equivalent to those provided for students and faculty in traditional campus settings" (ACRL, 2008). With the demographics of students changing to include increasing amounts of online and distance learners, as well as a more diversified range of ages of students, no one way of instruction or library interaction is going to assuage every user's expectations within this diverse group. This shift creates the need to re–examine the core services offered by academic libraries such as information literacy, effective searching strategies and reference help. Libraries can no longer rely on just their in–person reference and research services. Seal (2008) best defines this shift from 'reference and instruction to learning and engagement' (p. 257). An emerging solution for this shift is the embedded librarian. Literacy stations in the library would be a wonderful way for students to be more engaged and enjoy the idea of spending time in the library. Librarians and teachers could collaborate to build different activities ranging from computer stations to listening stations to visual art stations that would make the student's trips to the library more enjoyable. This would also provide the librarian an opportunity to get to know the individual students better which in turn would give the librarian a chance to recommend different types of books to students with more confidence. (Parrott & Keith, 2015) The final article I selected examined the effects of achievement on reading instruction. The purpose of the study was to see if a classroom that was based on student interest and independent work abilities could replace the standard curriculum being used within a classroom. Specifically the research was studying the effects of student's fluency and comprehension skills when given free will on their reading choices. • 17. School Library Vs. School Libraries The overall goal of any school library is to provide a space where students can grow and learn through the use of various information resources. School libraries, their funding and involvement in schools has changed in the past decades and continues to change and grow into the future. With the continual shift towards using more technology and the way in which we are consuming and using information only enhances the need for school libraries to continue to play a vital role in providing access to information and ideas for our students, teachers and schools. As technology continues to change and affect the needs of students and teachers, it is important for school libraries to embrace that change and participate in the change while still remembering their overall purpose and serving the students and community to the best of their ability. First, it is important to establish and understand the history, standards, and evolution of school libraries and school media specialists in the United States. School libraries have a history of constant change and fluctuating support. The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) became a subset of the American Library Association in 1951 (Taylor, 2015). Che & Du (2013) also argues that social media is catching on within academic libraries around the globe. Their research showed that 71.1% of academic libraries were already using social media to connect and engage with students (Chu & Du, 2013). While Stvilla & Gibradze (2017) agrees, they also state how important it is for librarians to stay updated with the latest trends of social media to connect with students. While connecting with students is a very important in marketing events, it's just as important to ensure these events are marketable to students, that spark interest. (Andrews, 2014). There needs to be a change in ideology regarding the function of the library in todays society. "For centuries, libraries have remained essentially separate, even competing with one another to establish and maintain the greatest collection, and now they need to recast themselves as platforms rather than storehouses. (Palfrey, 2015) With the introduction of the internet and online information libraries need to rebrand themselves. Libraries around the world can now share information with one another in real time, and the competition for resources has ended. That said, there is still value in networking with other agencies devoted to education and information. John Palfrey, author of Biblio Tech suggests that, "Libraries must act as ambitiously networked institutions, connecting their network effectively with partner intuitions: archives, historical societies, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations." According to our text, "it will allow for personal and professional networking" which will be essential in forming a strong group moving forward (Linden, R. M., 2010, P. 244). The Physics Teacher, 50(6), 379–380. doi:10.1119/1.4745701 Summary: According to Viele (2012), she states that when it comes to information literacy, there seems to be an abundance of definitions. The author states that an individual should be capable to effectively locate, evaluate, and use the needed information in making informed decisions that are invaluable throughout life. In any situation whether it be preparing a presentation for class, a poster, or writing a report, these steps should be completed in an ethical manner. In the article, the author breaks down each of the information fluency skills in component parts. She also provides explanations of how to do each with online tutorials links, helpful websites, and examples for reference of good places to start when making sure that each skill is preformed effectively. Critique: Retired as a physics and astronomy librarian at Cornell University, Patricia Viele, has worked with Cornell faculty, students and numerous K–12 teachers for many years. Synthesis takes into account organizing from multiple sources and presenting the information. Finally, Evaluation entails judging the product for effectiveness and judging the process for efficiency. (Wurster, 2011) Librarians, teachers, and students can all benefit from the Big6™ process as it helps to identify goals, hunt for, use and collect information and then reflect on that information with the presentation of the information. Teachers and librarians benefit because they can use it at any grade level, with any subject, with any state or national standards, and it complements any curriculum. Students benefit because the Big6™ assures they understand the assignment, complete the project, assignment, or activity, and discuss the process. In addition, students can know if they missed a step of the process, self–asses their work, recognize reliable information, cite sources, divide an assignment into easily managed parts, and feel confident in their work. (Wurster, 2011) Kuhlthau's Information Search Process (ISP) A very well known research process is Kuhlthau's Information Search Process (ISP). Kuhlthau uses six stages to present the user's physical, mental, and social view of information seeking. The stages are 1) task initiation, 2) selection, 3) exploration, 4) focus formulation, 5) collection, and 6) presentation. During the initiation stage, the student becomes ... Instructional Coaches And Teacher Librarians In the surprisingly positive aftermath of a recent interview with Scott Munro and a plethora of Elementary principals I was encouraged to present a proposal to you with regard to ways in which I may be able to offer my support as our district moves toward digital personalized learnings. It was both a stroke of genius and a gamble for the district to encode both Instructional Coaches and Teacher Librarians into more pivotal roles in the LIFT initiative. Both of those roles have an obvious and important presence in the new world order of digitally integrated schools and both groups perceive themselves as suffering from a mix of ambivalence and ambiguity within our district. By offering both collectives a voice in the development of a new framework for their jobs, you have been able to win back some of those that felt marginalized and clarified the road ahead for those more reluctant to change. That the district has taken the time to understand and listen before pushing forward with redefining what has been for many as much an identity as a profession is a testament to the district's effort and desire to not simply enforce change to do so in a thoughtful way. That you have chosen to use those newly defined role in such a lynchpin between the theory and application of personalized learning is a statement of their inherent value and your faith in their ability. To continue, this is the reason why there are so many statues in the world, including in art museums, in libraries, and even on the campuses of colleges, to show forth the honor and respect people have towards them for making a difference in their lives. For instance, a campus statue represents a symbolism to an individual who has made an impact on the grounds of a college campus that will be remembered for a life time. In this case, Columbus State University located in Columbus, Georgia, should have a campus statue in honor of a person who brought so much life on the premises of this college that can impact every life that steps foot here. However, there is a possibility of four people who can represent this statue: Callie McGinnis, Robert Arnold, Walter Richards, and William Clifford Tucker. To begin, Callie McGinnis is currently still present on Earth and was Columbus State University 's first Dean of Librarian who moved to the city of Columbus, Georgia from New Orleans, Louisiana to work as a reference librarian on July 1, 1974 to January 5, 2010. On the other hand, Robert Arnold was a public educator/teacher for 27 years and he eventually moved to the city of Columbus, Georgia to teach at Clover Hill Junior High School in the year of 1911. These highly popular books have all been banned from libraries in the United States. Libraries and schools in different states are banning books that are considered "inappropriate" to students for a variety of reasons. The main reason that teachers and librarians ban books is to protect students from facing challenged or difficult ideas. Some people believe that banning books is a good thing and helps the students, while other individuals believe book banning is a bad idea and this action has a negative effect on a society. Book banning is unacceptable because librarians and teachers ban books for their content, and not for their effect on students. According to the other of "Banned and Challenged Books", every year librarians take manners into their own hands and report hundreds of books containing inappropriate content in hope of banning them from school and public libraries, as well as school curriculums. When libraries and schools attempt to remove or restrict a book from the curriculum or library based upon the objections of a person's point of view, the book is considered a challenged book. A book is only considered banned once it has been completely removed from its previous location.
