Introduction
◼ What’s mass transfer?
▪ mass transfer refers to the movement of substances from one place to another and plays a
fundamental role in various industries and processes..

◼ Importance of Mass Transfer.
o Mass Transfer is the Basic Subject of Chemical Engineering. A Chemical Engineer
should know that how an operation is taking place for example ammonia dissolves in
water we know that but how dissolves? Mass Transfer tells us the mechanisms and
Concentrations between different phases.

Mass Transfer Mechanisms
Chen-331 Application of mass transfer
5
◼ the three main mass transfer mechanisms.
o Diffusion:The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to low
concentration.
o Convection:The transfer of mass due to bulk fluid motion.
o Mass transfer by reaction: Involves chemical reactions that result in the transfer of
mass.

▪ Separation processes: Distillation, absorption, extraction, and
adsorption.
▪ Reactor design: Mass transfer influences reaction rates and product
yields.
▪ Mass transfer in catalysis: Enhancing the efficiency of catalytic
reactions.
▪ Crystallization: Controlling crystal size and purity through mass
transfer.

o Water treatment: Removal of contaminants through processes like
filtration and reverse osmosis.
o Air pollution control: Mass transfer assists in removing pollutants from
flue gases.
o Soil remediation: Mass transfer techniques aid in the removal of
contaminants from soil.

o A clear understanding in process chemistry, reaction kinetics, and mass
transfer is the essential requirement to achieve the best achievable
technology. Many industrial and/or waste treatment processes are
involved in diffusion-controlled mechanism. To increase process
efficiency and reaction rate, the mass transfer of those processes
should be improved, which can be approached by development of
prediction model using theoretical theory such as Fick’s law or
penetration theory.
