Introduction to Technology Readiness Levels (1 ½ hrs):
Audience
Professionals not familiar with the use of Technology Readiness Levels and with minimal experience in
program/project development, systems engineering or technology development.
Goal
This course provides an introduction to Technology Readiness Levels - how they came into being, who uses
them and how they are used - both nationally and internationally. Upon completion of this course,
participants will:
• Have a basic understanding of the Technology Readiness levels and how to apply exit criteria
• Know what is required to apply systematic processes to assess technology maturity
• Have knowledge of the existence of a suite of tools that will enable a standardized assessment
Introduction to Technology Assessment (2hrs):
Audience
This course is designed for technical professionals involved in program/project development, systems
engineering or technology development who are going to become involved in technology assessment.
Goal
This course provides an introduction into what is required to perform a systematic assessment of the
technology maturity and corresponding development needs of the systems, subsystems and components
required to enable a program/project to meet goals and objectives. The content provides an overview of
concepts, tools, and techniques required to successfully perform assessments on complex projects. Upon
completion of this course, participants will:
• Understand the rationale for performing technology assessments and the impact of not doing so
• Have a basic understanding of the Technology Readiness levels and how to determine exit
criteria
• Know what is required to apply systematic processes to assess technology maturity from a
system perspective
• Have a basic knowledge of a suite of tools that will enable a standardized assessment
Introduction to Advancement Degree of Difficulty (AD2) (2hrs):
Audience
This course is designed for technical professionals that have minimal experience in projects or systems
engineering.
Goal
This one and a half hour course provides an introduction into what is required to perform a systematic
assessment of the issues associated with developing immature technology to identify the “tall tent poles” in
cost, schedule and risk. The content provides an overview of concepts, tools, and techniques required to
successfully perform assessments on complex projects with the goal of maximizing the likelihood of
successful completion. Upon completion of this course, participants will:
• Understand the rationale for performing AD2 assessments and the impact of not doing so
• Have a basic understanding of the AD2 process
• Have a basic understanding of use of the AD2 Tool set

2. Systematic Assessment of Technology Advancement and Insertion
Requirements for Programs/Projects (3 ½ hr basic or 6 ½ hr w/optional in-
class assessment):
Audience
This course is designed for technical professionals in program/project management or systems engineering
at the journeyman, or supervisory level.
Goal
This course provides a basic understanding of what is required to perform a systematic assessment of the
technology maturity and corresponding development needs of the systems, subsystems and components
required to enable a program/project to meet goals and objectives. The content provides concepts, tools,
and techniques required to successfully perform assessments on complex projects. Real-life case studies
are included and an initial working knowledge of assessment tools provided. Upon completion of this course,
participants will be prepared to:
• Understand the rationale for performing technology assessments and the impact of not doing so
• Have a firm understanding of the Technology Readiness levels and their exit criteria
• Apply systematic processes to assess programs/projects to determine maturity and development
needs
• Employ a suite of tools that will enable a standardized assessment
• Relate the technology maturity to cost risk and schedule impacts for program/project completion
• Develop a plan for successful technology maturation and insertion for complex projects
• Develop the basis for “push back” on program/project requirements that cannot be met
• Communicate technological risks to stakeholders.
A Comprehensive Overview of Techniques for Measuring System
Readiness
(6 ½ hrs):
Audience
This course is designed for technical professionals experienced in program/project development, systems
engineering or technology development who are looking to improve the system development process,
reduce risk and improve overall performance.
Goal
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the various techniques used to measure the readiness of
a system, subsystem or component to be developed within given cost and schedule limitations at an
acceptable level of risk. The techniques to be discussed include various methods of measuring System
Readiness Levels (SRLs), Risk Identification, Integration & Ilities (RI3), Integration Readiness Levels (IRLs),
Advancement Degree of Difficulty (AD2), Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), & the DOD SE Checklist.
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
• Understand the various advantages and limitations of current system level assessment processes
• Have a basic understanding of the tools available that will enable a standardized assessment
• Have a working knowledge of the various assessment of tools
Specific Courses can be tailored or additional courses
developed upon request
