Mobile Mastery ebook - Nokia - #SmarterEverydayNokia
Mobile - being connected everywhere to everything and everyone - is the fact of modern life. It defines how we live, how we work, how we communicate and how the world runs. It is the tool we reach for first when we are faced with challenges big and small in our everyday lives.
But despite the rapid pace with which we’ve adopted it, we’re still learning the best and most effective ways to use mobile technology, how to make the most of the opportunities and how to avoid the pitfalls.
That is what mobile mastery is about – gaining the skills and knowledge we need to work with technology in a productive, efficient and beneficial way.

The document discusses the results of a study on the effects of a new drug on memory and cognitive function in older adults. The double-blind study involved 100 participants aged 65-80 and found that those given the drug performed significantly better on memory and problem-solving tests than the placebo group after 6 months. The drug was found to be safe and well-tolerated with no serious side effects reported.
Paper and presentation on research of students' habitus and technology practices, a case study of a rural student. Paper included as notes under each slide.Presented at HELTASA November 2012.
We spent a year listening to creatives across the design industry, and generated a list of 100 questions we wished we'd known at the beginning of our career. Designed both for self reflection and to cut through hiring-process gloss, they start out innocently enough but quickly cut to the chase.
Talk at Interaction 15, San Francisco, reflecting on what's next. A full transcription of the talk can be found here: https://medium.com/todays-office/a-year-of-reflection-820d228d999c
The document proposes an experiment to help data scientists understand ethical considerations in their research. The experiment would subject data scientists to experiments using their own data and methods under eight rules: requiring consent, targeting a random sample, using organization's customer data, publicly available tools and platforms, minimizing risk of discovery, publishing results, and consenting to be subjects in future experiments. It is signed by Studio D Radiodurans, a consultancy comfortable operating in challenging environments.

This document outlines principles for conducting research when designing for social impact. It discusses the importance of putting participants first, working with local crews, staying local, inverting power relationships, and closing distances through empathic activities and conducive moments. The goal is to achieve a deeper understanding of people's lives and perspectives in order to design solutions that are effective and beneficial.
Journeys for Water: Survival Strategies for Urban IndiaJan Chipchase
The document summarizes research conducted by frog researchers in India to understand how urban slum dwellers access and use drinking water. The researchers traveled from Ahmedabad to Delhi, visiting slums and interviewing residents. They found that while water is abundant, the supply is rarely clean and reliable. Slum residents struggle daily to obtain the water they need. The researchers hope their findings will help solutions like Sarvajal's "water ATM" model expand access to clean drinking water for slum communities.
A short design research study to support Sarvajal - a project that is bringing clean drinking water to urban India through the use of a novel water ATM.
This document presents 50 questions related to privacy, consent, and what constitutes "creepy" behavior in the context of new technologies like Google Glass. It questions how personal data is collected and used, whether users understand how their data and footage may be monitored and shared, and when problematic incidents like crimes, suicides or unintended violations of social norms might first occur when recorded through Glass. It also examines how perceptions of "creepy" may change over time or vary between individuals and cultures.
In the Hands of God: A Study of Risk & Savings in AfghanistanJan Chipchase
This document summarizes a study on risk, savings, and financial services in Afghanistan. Researchers conducted interviews and observations in Kabul and Herat to understand current saving practices and perceptions of risk. Key findings include that Afghans view savings in diverse forms like property, livestock, and gold rather than bank accounts due to lack of trust in banks and preference for tangible assets. The study also explores how incentives or rewards could encourage savings through formal institutions by replicating existing social contribution behaviors. Overall, the document aims to provide insights that could help develop new savings products and services tailored to the Afghan context.
This document describes a design experiment conducted in China to gain perspective on China's changing global role and reflect on its national identity. The experiment followed 6 rules: it engaged people across China; every Chinese person could recognize the final product; none understood what was being made until completion; only Chinese people and services were used; the goal and process were regularly reviewed; and the process was transparent without compromising rule 3. The decision to make a product from ubiquitous red welcome mats outside Chinese restaurants/shops was inspired by research in Chinese cities. The mat is not considered rich culture by locals but was a hidden raw material. Interviews revealed complex views on national identity and globalization.
1) The document describes a design experiment conducted in China that engaged over 300 active participants and 5,000 passive participants without them understanding the overall goal.
2) The experiment involved tasks like designing a flag, purchasing red mats from 100 different shops across China, and assembling the mats into a large design.
3) Only Chinese services could be used and the process was reviewed after each task while maintaining transparency without revealing the overall goal.
The document discusses themes around technology and its impact on social interactions and identity. It mentions topics like phone numbers being used as social lubricants, dual-SIM hacking, mainstreaming of DNA testing challenging family notions, understanding social contexts and distances, and having personal stakes in technologies. Principles discussed include understanding context and living and dying through experiences.
The document discusses the future of mobile technology and market research. It notes that mobile phones are becoming smaller, faster, and cheaper, with over 5 billion subscribers globally. To understand markets, companies need cultural and contextual understanding of why and how people use mobile technology in different areas. The presentation addresses challenges in generating concepts and strategies to adapt services for various markets, and ensuring the right research methods are used.
This document discusses a research project exploring emerging mobile money practices in Afghanistan. Mobile money services were introduced in 2008 by Roshan and Vodafone through their M-Paisa service. The research aims to understand how these services work alongside existing formal and informal money practices, and the impact on quality of life. It outlines challenges including cultural sensitivities around financial matters, language barriers, and operational risks. The goal is to contribute knowledge about mobile money design for unbanked populations globally.

(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).
The Evolution and Impact of OTT Platforms: A Deep Dive into the Future of Ent...ABHILASH DUTTA
This presentation provides a thorough examination of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms, focusing on their development and substantial influence on the entertainment industry, with a particular emphasis on the Indian market. We begin with an introduction to OTT platforms, defining them as streaming services that deliver content directly over the internet, bypassing traditional broadcast channels. These platforms offer a variety of content, including movies, TV shows, and original productions, allowing users to access content on-demand across multiple devices. The historical context covers the early days of streaming, starting with Netflix's inception in 1997 as a DVD rental service and its transition to streaming in 2007. The presentation also highlights India's television journey, from the launch of Doordarshan in 1959 to the introduction of Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television in 2000, which expanded viewing choices and set the stage for the rise of OTT platforms like Big Flix, Ditto TV, Sony LIV, Hotstar, and Netflix. The business models of OTT platforms are explored in detail. Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) models, exemplified by Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, offer unlimited content access for a monthly fee. Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD) models, like iTunes and Sky Box Office, allow users to pay for individual pieces of content. Advertising-Based Video on Demand (AVOD) models, such as YouTube and Facebook Watch, provide free content supported by advertisements. Hybrid models combine elements of SVOD and AVOD, offering flexibility to cater to diverse audience preferences.
Content acquisition strategies are also discussed, highlighting the dual approach of purchasing broadcasting rights for existing films and TV shows and investing in original content production. This section underscores the importance of a robust content library in attracting and retaining subscribers. The presentation addresses the challenges faced by OTT platforms, including the unpredictability of content acquisition and audience preferences. It emphasizes the difficulty of balancing content investment with returns in a competitive market, the high costs associated with marketing, and the need for continuous innovation and adaptation to stay relevant.
The impact of OTT platforms on the Bollywood film industry is significant. The competition for viewers has led to a decrease in cinema ticket sales, affecting the revenue of Bollywood films that traditionally rely on theatrical releases. Additionally, OTT platforms now pay less for film rights due to the uncertain success of films in cinemas.
Looking ahead, the future of OTT in India appears promising. The market is expected to grow by 20% annually, reaching a value of ₹1200 billion by the end of the decade. The increasing availability of affordable smartphones and internet access will drive this growth, making OTT platforms a primary source of entertainment for many viewers.
