4. Age 12 - decided on a religious life.
Age 18 – joined the Sisters of Loretto a roman catholic order .
Age 21 – takes first religious vows and chooses the name
therse du lisieux after the saint of missionaries .
5. After a short course with the Medical Mission Sisters in Patna, she
returned to Calcutta and found temporary lodging with the Little
Sisters of the Poor.
On 21 December she went for the first time to the slums. On
October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the
Vatican to start her own order. Vatican originally labeled the order as
the Diocesan Congregation of the Calcutta Diocese, and it later came
to known as the "Missionaries of Charity".
The primary task of the Missionaries of Charity was to take care of
those persons who nobody was prepared to look after.
6. She began her missionary work with the poor in
1948.
Mother Teresa adopted Indian citizenship.
Its mission was to care for, in her own words, "the
hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the
blind, the lepers, all those people who feel
unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society,
people that have become a burden to the society
and are shunned by everyone.“
7. 1952 – opens Nirmal Hriday
[pure heart] for the dying.
1955 – opens Nirmala Shishua
Bhavan [ immaculate heart] for
lost children or children's home.
1957 – opens Shanti Nagar
[city of peace] a home for
lepers.
8. By 1996, she was operating 517 missions in more than
100 countries.
Over the years, Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity
grew from twelve to thousands serving the "poorest of the
poor" in 450 centers around the world.

1971 - Pope John XXIII peace prize
1975 - Albert Schweiter international prize
1976 - Pacem in Terris award
1978 - Balzon prize
1979 - Noble Peace Prize
1983 - Order of Merit
1985 - Medal of Freedom
1994 - Golden Honour of the Nation [Albania]
1996 - Honorary citizenship of USA
1998 - Pope John Paul well begins the process to make her a saint.
This process is still going on !

12. Mother Teresa left behind a legacy of forty-five
hundred sisters, four hundred brothers, and
countless spiritual workers, missionaries, and
volunteers in whose hearts and work her spirit lives
on. It is possible that no one person has ever
received more awards and honors than Mother
Teresa.
Mother Teresa died long time ago but she still lives
in the heart of the people.
A living example of the motto “The more you give
away the more you receive.”
