What is universal
design
In architecture, universal design means creating
spaces that meet the needs of all people, young and
old, able and disabled.
From the arrangement of the rooms to the choice of
colors, many details go into the creation of
accessible spaces.
No matter how beautiful, your home will not be
comfortable or appealing if you cannot move freely
through its rooms and independently perform the
basic tasks of life. Even if everyone in the family is
able-bodied, a sudden accident or the long-term
effects of illness can create mobility problems, visual
and auditory impairments, or cognitive decline.

Designing for the blind is one example of universal
design.
Your dream home may have spiral staircases and
balconies with sweeping views, but will it be usable
by and accessible for everyone in your family?

Principles of Universal Design
The Center for Universal Design at the College of Design, North Carolina
State University, has established seven overarching principles for all
universal design:
1. Equitable Use
2. Flexibility in Use
3. Simple and Intuitive Use
4. Perceptible Information (e.g., color contrast)
5. Tolerance for Error
6. Low Physical Effort
7. Size and Space for Approach and Use
7. 4THCOFFEE
• The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.
• Provisions for privacy, security, and safety are equally available to all
users.
Equitable Use
8. 4THCOFFEE
• The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and
abilities.
• It accommodates right or left handed access and use.
Flexibility in Use
9. 4THCOFFEE
• Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user’s
experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level.
• It eliminates unnecessary complexity.
Simple and Intuitive Use
10. 4THCOFFEE
• The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user,
regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities.
• It uses different modes (pictorial, verbal, tactile)
Perceptible Information
11. 4THCOFFEE
• The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of
accidental or unintended actions.
• It provides warnings of hazards and errors.
Tolerance for Error
12. 4THCOFFEE
• The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a
minimum of fatigue.
Low Physical Effort
13. 4THCOFFEE
• Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach,
manipulation, and use, regardless of user’s body size, posture, or
mobility.
• It makes reaching to all components comfortable for any seated or
standing user.
