Gothic Literature Research Paper
The Structure of Gothic Literature Gothic literature starts with some realistic and some being
fictitious, the authors will distributes their stories with characteristics seen in reality or heard in
fairytales. Spirits, mystery, and entrapment are gothic characteristics preserved throughout the works
of Morgenstern, Irving, Hawthorne, and Poe. Spirts are used between "The Devil and Tom Walker"
and Night Circus to show the horrific side of the dead. In "The Devil and Tom Walker", Irving uses
the Old Scratch to resemble the devil. As Tom Walker makes a deal with devil, Tom agrees to
become a usurer in return he would get availability of the treasure in Old Scratch's service. "The
devil take me if I have made a farthing" (Irving 320). Morgenstern's ... Show more content on

In Morgenstern Night Circus, one in society may only look at small things that could have a huge
impact in one's life. Unfortunately, they fail to complete due to the confusion of one's mind. "The
smallest charms can be the most effective...It doesn't seem to be very effective" (Morgenstern 247).
Now in Poe "Fall of the House of Usher" many just scar their minds due to so much horrific ideas
that eventually build up to haunt one's mind. "There was an iciness, a sickening of the heart– an
unredeemed deadness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of
the sublime" (Poe 28). One's own mind can play all sorts of games on you if not controlled correctly.
The gothic elements that composed the creation of a gothic literature story were dispersed
throughout the works of Morgenstern, Irving, Hawthrone, and Poe. Their fictional stories, Night
Circus, "The devil and Tom Walker", "Dr. Heidegger's experiment", and "Fall of the House of
Usher" all include spirits, mystery, and entrapment among their works of gothic

Role and Concept of Sleary's Circus in Hard Times
'Hard Times' is a Charles Dickens novel set in the social backdrop of the Victorian era during the
Industrial Revolution that took place during the 1850s. The ill effects of Victorian Utilitarianism are
upheld in this moralistic vision of the writer. Unlike most of his novels, 'Hard Times' is not based in
London but in the red and black seemingly monotonous structures of Coketown. That being said, it
still realistically allows the reader to observe the systems and structures of society forced to face
various economic and social hardships. What preserves the novel as a social commentary is that the
struggles in life and human emotions are still relevant "for these times".
The rise in capitalist ideals brought forth an age where the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Though the circus is a commercial enterprise, it still feels more like a family than Grangrind's
household will ever manage to. Mr. Sleary thus, acts as a protector and though he feels compassion
for Sissy, he is aware that it is not economically viable for the company to keep her and therefore
thinks of more suitable alternatives like her continued education. Unlike Gradgrind who condemns
his daughter to an incompatible and unsuitable marriage. The circus as a whole with all its colours is
a great visual contrast to the image evoked by Coketown. It is not shrouded by the by–product of its
labour, like the soot that coated the city. The circus, here, stands for all that is loyal and free.
Nonetheless, there is a certain disdain in which the gypsies are viewed by the "educated" classes, as
Bounderby puts it – "we are the kind of people who know the value of time, and you are the kind of
people who don't know the value of time". This is primarily because they cannot be restrained by the
laws and obligations of society. Dickens reiterates his own personal faith in those people, like the
gypsies by highlighting the presence of complete trust, emotions and faith as opposed to the doubt
prevalent in most of society, even with all the privileges and high standards of morality they seem to
possess. It is able to address issues like education – that is only successful when

Confinement In Water For Elephants By Sara Gruen
In the compelling novel Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, there are many various messages to be
interpreted by the reader. One of the most axiomatic messages Gruen portrays is that of how one
must break free of perceived confinement to discover true love and acceptance. This is very
significant in the novel as there are numerous characters who are affected by their internal conflicts.
For example, the main character Jacob Jankowski suffered a great feeling of confinement after both
his parents die a sudden death. He escaped this by joining the circus, only to find himself
imprisoned once again. Only this time by his love for Marlena, an intriguing young circus
performer, who was married to the animal trainer whom Jacob's close friend referred ... Show more

Marlena was aware her affair with Jacob is wrong, but Jacob continued to persuade her. When Jacob
pleaded with her to see him again, she replied "'I just can't. I'm married. I made my bed, and now I
have to lie in it.'" (Gruen 285). This shows how Marlena had little love left for August, but felt
obligated to stay in the marriage. This was Marlena's form of imprisonment as she struggled with
August's bipolar tendencies and his intense paranoia. Both Marlena and Jacob struggled to break out
of their self–inflicted imprisonment in order to find love and acceptance. In the end, when, Jacob
and Marlena were able to be together, they finally felt the fulfillment that the love of one another
had brought them. On the other hand, elderly Jacob was a free–spirited old man. However; his
imprisonment was that of his aging body. He felt that he did not require the constant care and
assistance he received at the Nursing Home his kids put him in after breaking his hip. When
protesting the indignity of having nurses insist on helping him shower and go to the bathroom, Jacob
stated that "'[He doesn't] in fact require help with either, but they're all so afraid [he's] going to slip
and break [his] hip again that [he gets] a chaperone whether [he likes] it or not.'" (Gruen

1936 Soviet Propaganda
The 1936 Soviet musical film––Circus––presents a vibrant, melodramatic production of Soviet
propaganda that mainly promotes racial equality and international solidarity of people, both core
concepts introduced by the Stalinist constitution (Salys 252). This paper will focus on the grand
finale of the film, an event that visually enlightens the viewer with hope through bright lighting, a
festive and patriotic musical number and close up shots of an excited and diverse cast. In the form of
camerawork that focuses on intense facial expressions and movement, the scene targets the
emotional turmoil of society at the time. Through mise–en–scène, Grigori Aleksandrov and Isidor
Simkov evoke emotions emphasized by the high–key lighting, which in turn ... Show more content

maintaining tradition while including cultural variety. The song references how wonderful the USSR

transitional steps taken by Dixon; visually we witness her singing this melody and discovering the
Stalinist Soviet Union as a joyful place that is the most free and tolerant in the

The Scarlet Letter William And Hester Relationship
They say that opposites attract and this holds true for the relationship between William and Hester as
they learn more about one another. The husband and wife came from different upbringings. William
is born with a strict father among the "Back Creek Folk", while his wife is considered "one of the
Gap people" with flexible, supportive parents. The way their parents raised them influences the way
they act. William is a hard worker who speaks very little, but his wife Hester does enough talking
for the both of them. Hester is a strong woman and manages the family farm very well. She is able
to make decisions quickly without William's input. The farm is considered to be most prosperous in

Marius Atilius Research Paper
AURELIUS FALCO bid Marius Atilius farewell, thanking him for his hospitality and for his help in
convincing the military authorities of Caesarea to go easy on Rubio. As it turned out, Atilius was
good friends with Centurion Civilis, hence the invitation to the dinner party. The two had served
together in the Tenth Legion years ago, Atilius attaining the respectable rank of Decurion, serving as
Chief of Horse Scouts. Upon his discharge, Atilius founded the Red Faction of Caesarea and quickly
built up a successful stable system. He also supplied the Legion with horses, on occasion, those that
were deemed unsuitable for the Circus but good enough for the Scouts. Simon Ben–Atar and his son

must warn you. You'll be racing on my turf, in front of my people. And I shall show no mercy." "I
look forward to the day, Rubio. It shall be a savage contest!" "So, my friend," Ben–Atar asked.
"What did Marius Atilius have to say, hmm? Will he be able to see your fortunes rise in the Circus
Maximus? Will he help you gain favor with the Red faction of Rome?" "He has said so, Simon,"
Falco returned, nodding. "He has since sent a missive to Rome, to the faction leader of the Reds. I

will, Simon. But only as a guest of the Reds." "Oh? Only a guest?" "Yes. I do not expect to be

Speech On Circus Animals
A tiger jumping through a ring of fire. An elephant standing on his head. Classic circus animal
tricks. The sea of laughing children shriek with delight as each animal performs more and more
astounding acts. What if I told you that Nala the tiger is starved, beaten, tortured into submission?
What if I told you that every night, Freddy the elephant is chained in a metal cage, his sanity
slipping into the darkness? Would you be laughing then?
Good morning parents and teachers and welcome to the 2017 School Ethics Forum. Today I will
focus on two compelling ethical reason why the horrific treatment of animals in circuses is morally
repulsive. One, circus animals suffer fatal injuries during training. Two, the unnatural restrictions of
circus life have a devastating impact on the animals' mental health.
Firstly, the fatal injuries inflicted on animals in circuses is a direct violation of the ethical principle
of harm. Starvation, whips, muzzles, bull hooks, electric pods. These torture devices favoured by
circus animal trainers inflict pain and instill terror in innocent animals until they unquestioningly
obey every single command. Simple and effective, and cruel, evil and sadistic. How can a trainer
listen to harrowing screams of excruciating pain and continue to whip the animal again and again?
What kind of heartless monster can watch the soul, the very life drain from a living being and not
stop? At every show, Nala the tiger leaps through a ring of fire. Tigers naturally

Brief Summary Of The Movie 'Big Fish'
The movie Big Fish was produced in 2003. Big Fish is about a dying man, Edward, and his son,
Will. The movie consists of several flashbacks following Edward Blooms life and his adventures. It
shows how Edward and his son's relationship was very strained and then how it was resolved in the
end. There were also a great number of fantasy aspects in this movie that make the movie very
unique. These fantasies are mainly in the stories that Edward tells his son. They show how Edward
Bloom lived his life and how he made life choices knowing how he would die. Edward Bloom and
his son's relationship was not very strong. Edward was always out of town because of his salesman
job. When Edward and his son, Will, actually talked Edward would tell his son stories about his life
and his adventures. As Will grew older, he did not believe the fantasies that were in the stories that
he told. Edward was very suspicious of his father too. He was certain that he was having an affair

Edward felt like a big fish in a small pond, so he decided to travel. He traveled to the circus where
he saw his future wife, Sandra. He worked for the circus basically for free. He asked for one fact
about her a month. Edward had a lot of confidence and would do anything dangerous because he
knew that it would not kill him. When he was drafted into the military, he took the most dangerous
and crazy tasks in order to shorten his time. He ended up parachuting right into a performance at a
Korean army camp and found the information he needed. The United States military did not hear
from him, so they assumed that he was dead. They had to deliver the awful news to Edward's wife.
Then Edward found his way back and surprised his wife. He ended up dying of cancer in the
hospital. At Edward's funeral all of the characters of his stories attended. That was when Will, his
son, knew that his father's stories were actually

Although everything seems to be a blur, I start to recollect my day, and it all began at my second

I remember getting prepared for the show today, and I recollect dripping in sweat because I was
anxious to perform in a sold–out show. This caused my hands to perspire more, making it nearly
impossible to hold on to my bar. My parents, Beatrice and Alonzo Moss, had already given me a talk
about how I could not let them down, and that the future of the circus depended on this show.

"If you could only see the beauty that can come from ashes"
Butterfly Circus is a 20 minute dramatic short film which is a testament to the power of hope and
faith in oneself. It is a wonderful reflection of the themes of good and evil, man vs. man, man vs.
himself and hope conquers all. It can be viewed as a religious film but need not be. If you believe in
yourself, you will be saved.

Rather than raise the issue of racism the film makers have chosen to use Will as a symbol of those
who may not fit in – those who do not feel they have a purpose in life. Racism is a non issue when
people respect themselves and others.
Topic
The topic of those marginalized can be discussed within the context of current society. Will believes
he is the man "even God has turned his back on" in his physical limitations. While touring with the
Butterfly Circus Will realizes he can overcome his physical disabilities and swim – it is through this
baptism by water, the very act of swimming, he is reborn and realizes his potential. The caterpillar
becomes a butterfly.
Cultural
The culture of American society during the Great Depression can be examined. The hopelessness
and loss of innocence is an excellent teaching opportunity to discuss what exactly defines a person.
How would the students handle the loss of their money, jobs and their homes? The culture of those
marginalized and important societal norms within the can also be examined. Are disabled people
more respected in certain societies? Does Will consider himself disabled by the end of the film? The
culture of the group vs the individual, man vs. society as larger issues can also be developed as
topics along with the theme of hope and rebirth . Do most teenagers feels there is hope in the world?

We can examine the text ie. the language of the film . There are wonderful quotes not the least

"Circus in Town" and "Happyness for Sale" are two stories about people in poverty, and how
optimism takes away "the pain" from living in poverty. In the short story "CIrcus in Town," Jenny is
upset she isn't able to go to the circus, but she is optimistic that one day she'll go see the circus. In
"Happyness for Sale," Gardner is rich and living the American dream, but in the beginning, he was
homeless. Gardner said that "A lot of hard decisions were made [here]." If the Gardner was to talk to
Jenny, he would say just be optimistic and work hard. Overall, optimism is an important factor in
both short stories. Both of the short stories "Circus in Town" and "Happyness for Sale" show how
much optimism plays in people's lives. For Jenny, in the

The Night Circus Themes
The Night Circus written by Erin Morgenstern depicts the tale of two lovers bound by a challenge
that forces them to compete against each other. It is a romantic tale, from which the reader can
develop a strong sense of emotion with the two lovers. Morgenstern uses the character Bailey to
demonstrate the ideas of, love, passion vs obsession and magic in this novel. She engages the reader
with an exciting story line and uses a lot of symbolism.
One of the themes that exists throughout the book is the power of love, how decisions driven by
love, can change a person's life for betterment. Numerous times in the book, characters are forced to
make life–changing decisions. A significant example in The Night Circus is when Bailey faced an

In the novel, the circus itself is a symbol of the riddle of life and a symbol of dreams. The story
gives a hopeful perspective to which it depicts the capacity to overcome obstacles utilizing passion.
Nonetheless, there is an all–encompassing topic to which the author portrays a darker message
where the failure to isolate passion from obsession prompts the downfall one's character and the
blurring one's judgment. A notable example in The Night Circus would be Bailey's obsession with
the circus. Bailey is the son of farmers in Massachusetts and portrays obsessive behaviour towards
the circus. "a solitary white glove that has gone rather grey...being kept in a small box with rocks,"
(Morgenstern 111) and never forgetting about the circus. Then again, his family has extensive
desires with him. His dad wants him to take over the family farm and he was conceded into the
Cambridge and Harvard. His over the top conduct with the circus clouds his judgment as surrenders
all family desires to become a part of the circus. He abandons his family without a goodbye. Bailey
can outweigh the circus over his own family and disregard his friends and family who raised him,
tended to him and gave their time to him. Many people trust that family is a standout amongst the
most vital parts of life, and surely it is, yet Bailey can surrender all that only for his obsession with

Summary Of The Night Circus, By Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus written by Erin Morgenstern depicts the tale of two lovers bound by a challenge
that forces them to compete against each other. It was a romantic tale, from which the reader can
develop a strong sense of emotion with the two lovers. In this novel, Morgenstern uses the character
Bailey to demonstrate the ideas of love, passion vs obsession and standing up for yourself. Love is a
very influential idea in the story, without it Bailey wouldn't have taken over the circus. However,
Bailey's obsession with the circus makes him abandon his family. Additionally, Bailey would not
take over the circus without him finally standing up for himself. Morgenstern engages the reader

However, from the earliest starting point to the end, characters are seen standing up for themselves.
A prominent example is when towards the end of the book, Bailey stands up for himself and his
future. With regards to Bailey's future, all his family is endeavouring to control his future. His
grandma needs him to head off to college, yet his father states he is taking control over the family
farm and won't tune in to anyone else. "The easy thing to do would be to let the issue drop... Instead,
and he is not entirely certain why, he keeps the subject alive, bringing it up as often as possible."
(Morgenstern 107) Despite the fact that Bailey's dad won't tune in, Bailey continues pushing,
winding up more forceful with what he needs. In the end of the book Bailey goes to bat for himself
and his future. When he is going out with the goal to join the circus and is caught by his sister, he
says, "I don't care if you don't understand that. Staying here won't make me happy. It will make you
happy because you are insipid and boring, and an insipid, boring life is enough for you. It's not
enough for me. It will never be enough for me. So, I'm leaving." (Morgenstern 363) In this quote,
Morgenstern uses repetition with the word "it" to reinforce the importance of the message, build
suspense and also stress the significance of the message as this is a massive turning point in the
story. In this passage Bailey

E.B. White’s essays
In E.B. White's essays, "Once More to the Lake "and 'The Ring of Time", the author demonstrates
two different interpretations of time and how it is used to symbolize meaning to each piece. "Once
More to the Lake" is an essay that is derived mostly from White's personal experience while "The
Ring of Time" is mostly examining a teenage girl performing at the circus, in the eyes of someone
else. Both of these articles give the reader insight of how the author uses the theme of time to show
different aspects to the storyline. In White's essays, he uses strategies that reflect on the past and
foresee the future, use other individuals as vehicles to access an alternative temporality and
demonstrate his own perceptions and visions in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast to "The Ring of Time", White's essay "Once More to the Lake" uses the narrator's son to
explore the notion of time. While visiting the lake again, he was going to use a motor boat with his
son and just by "watching him and remembering the things that could be done with the old one–
cylinder engine "(White, Once More to the Lake 3). In that quotation, White is giving example as to
how the narrator is exploring the notion of time through his son. As his son uses the boat, he
remembers him once using the boat with the same type of engine, therefore he is reliving the past
through his son. In similarity, both stories use other people as an object to help you see how White
explores the notion of time, and it is all due to his interpretations of each character. White uses the
strategy of demonstrating his own perceptions and visions in order to explore the notions and reality
of time. In both essays, the author thinks of time as a major theme that gives meaning to the
storyline. In "The Ring of Time", White claims that time is moving in a circle. As quoted from the
narrator "as I watched with the others, our jaws dropped, our eyes alight, I became painfully
conscious of the element of time...everything seemed to be taking the shape of a circle, conforming
to the course of the horse...then time

Social Hierarchy In Jacob's Life
The main character, Jacob, never expected his parents to fall out of his life. He had a happy life at
Cornell, he was well on his way to earning a degree in veterinary medicine when his parents were
killed in a car accident. He felt a sense of powerlessness, he felt lost. He had nowhere to go: his
home was empty, and no one was willing to take care of him. The mission in Jacob's life now turned
into a mission of survival. He had to learn to become much more dependent on himself. This was
hard for him, and led him to walk out of one of his final exams to become a vet. Once all hope was
lost, he found a circus that changed the course of his life. There he encountered more powerlessness
and survival, both circumstances he already knew. The world ... Show more content on

Many of the central figures in these hierarchy's use power and manipulation to cause others to
become powerless. One example of this today would general managers in baseball. They have the
power and authority to send players to the major leagues, or the minor leagues. Many of these
players depend on their salary from baseball to support themselves and their families. When the time
comes for call ups, many of the players are left out, similar to how many of the circus workers were
left out and largely ignored by Uncle Al. They are kept in the minor leagues, where the average
salary is between $3,000 and $7,500 for a five month season. This salary is lower than a fast food
workers, and is a testimony to how minor leaguers are largely disregarded by the MLB. The general
managers have the power to call up and send down the players on his team at will, giving him a
large amount of power. Another trait that is relevant in our world today is survival. For MLB
players, this is a concept they have gotten very familiar with. In our generation, new technologies
have been developed that show many aspects of a players play on the baseball field. There is a lot of
pressure on MLB players to be consistently good, because the alternative of being sent down is one
they don't want to face. This is very cruel, and can also be seen in Water for Elephants. Many of the
circus workers have to fight for duties that are relevant to Uncle Al in order to get paid. Uncle Al is
similar to a general manager in this regard, as he can decide how much each person gets paid based
on their role in the circus. Three baseball players are suing the MLB with hope that they will raise
the wages minor leaguers get paid, but there is little hope. The MLB is exempt from an anti–trust
law, meaning that all of this is legal. The minor league players all have hope that they can make the
major leagues someday, but the reality is that few actually do.

Rubio's Injustice: The Meaning Behind The Road

built roads, testing their prowess, testing his mettle. They were powerful, they were fast; they knew

The Sentimentality Of William Tavern Essay
In the passage, "The Sentimentality of William Tavern," the plot is rather simply. In the beginning,
we meet Mr.William and Mrs.Hester tavern. We come to find out they had two sons. We also found

town. Bad news is, that Hester wants the boys to go, but William doesn't think it's a good idea.
Hester says that,"That you can't just work them hard if you can't encourage them." She thinks that
the circus as something for the boys to remember and have memories about. William says/thinks of
it more as a distraction and waste of money. William thinks the boys should work hard and expect
no reward. After the rejection of asking him to let the boys go. She goes on about her memories at

Summary Of The Novel 'Water For Elephants'
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is a novel about the life of an elderly man who spent time in the
nineteen thirties traveling with a circus. This man is Jacob Jankowski. Jacob Jankowski is around
ninety years old and living in an assisted living home, which is depicted as a sort of Hell on Earth.
Throughout the novel it would seem that Jacob Jankowski is suffering from mild dementia. He often
forgets small things like his caretakers' names, but he never forgets his time in the circus. While
Jacob Jankowski is living in the assisted living home, the circus comes into town. This brings back
memories. Jankowski begins to have flashbacks in his dreams. The reader can assume that these
flashbacks are caused by the circus coming into town, which Jankowski sees being set up every day

The Sentimentally Of William Tavener Analysis
At the beginning of the story "The Sentimentally of William Tavener," Ms. Hester states that she
believes Mr. William should allow their children to attend the annual circus. She begins rambling
about her experience at the circus as a child and the joy she remembers of it. She expects not a word
from Mr. William as always, but today he spoke up. To her surprise, Mr. William had attended the
same circus also remembers it joyfully. A explanation as to why the plot is ordered this way is

Summary Of The Roaring 20s
The Roaring 20s begin. Having moved from Okawville, a town of 600, to East St. Louis, a city of
75,000, Charles and Elizabeth have adjusted to a different environment over the past nine years.
Charles is 72–years–old and is still working as a crossing watchman for the L&N Railroad. He
cranks down the guardrails when a train approaches his intersection at 15th and Lincoln Streets.
Members of his family are undoubtedly noticing that he is becoming more and more forgetful of the
more recent things that have happened or that have been talked about. His 53–year–old wife,
Elizabeth, is still called "Mamma" by her adult children. Still living with his parents is their 29–
year–old son, George or, as he is called by his family and friends, "Duddle." An army veteran, he
finds work, at least temporarily, as an electrician. Also living here is Lizzie. Turning 22, she is the
youngest of the Lorne children. She has fully recovered from having undergone major surgery that
has left her with only one kidney. L12) (L32) (L51)
Charles and Elizabeth's oldest child is Rachel Hall. In 1920, thirty–six–year–old Rachel is living
with her husband, Lorenzo, on 9th Street in East St. Louis. Her children, Grace, Irene, Charlie, and
Corrine, range in age from thirteen to nine. All are attending school. Although Lorenzo is employed
as a butcher at a meat packing house in National City, his salary is barely enough to cover the cost
rent, food, and clothing for a family of six. Despite going through the

Circus Propaganda
The movie Circus (1936) by Grigori Aleksandrov is the one of the best Communist Propaganda
movies of all. Aleksandrov's purpose in making this film was to motivate the soviet people by
supporting Russia, Stalin, and Socialism. Some of the key actors of the movie are, James Patterson
as Jimmy, the black child that symbolized the racist depictions of blacks by Hollywood and how the
Soviet Union accepts every race and color. Ivan Martinov, played by Sergei Stolyarov was displayed
as a Soviet superhero for not rejecting Marion Dixon and her child Jimmy because of their color and
race. Marion Dixon played by Lyubov Orlova, the first women actress to be seen in a soviet movie.
The use of propaganda is very interesting as the movie starts with Marion Dixon, a white mother
carrying a black child being chased by a mob. She is forced to flee from her country and the single

Jimmy is passed on to the audience of the circus with a lullaby sung to the baby by several Soviet

everyone is accepted. One of the most important scenes from the movie is when Martynov and
Dixon are both singing the "Song of the Motherland." This is another technique by Aleksandrov to
portray the Stalinist ideology. The song is about the beautiful USSR and how other are no countries

Circus Maximus
Circus Maximus It is nearly impossible to look at the field that holds the remains of the Circus
Maximus and understand what it once held without the aid of a vivid reconstruction. The remains of
Circus Maximus lie in the Valley between the Aventine and Palentine hill. Traditionally, the history
of the Circus Maximus began with chariot races held in honor of the God Consus in a less
permanent structure in the area near Consus's altar. In later years, this lead to the construction of a
circus under the first Etruscan king, Tarquinius Priscus around 600 bc. Previous to Tarquin's
intervention, an underground stream kept the valley swamp like. Tarquin diverted the water and
drained the area and began to hold chariot races in the area. The ... Show more content on

Racers were expected to remain in their chalked lanes until passing a marked break line at which
time the charioteers were free to take any position on the track. The jargoning for the ideal location
on the track often made racing a dangerous sport. The chariot races traditionally consisted of seven
laps about the track counterclockwise. Turning posts dubbed matae consisted of 3 gilded bronze
cones set atop a hemispherical shaped block. The races lasted somewhere in the realm between eight
and nine minutes and the race length was measured to be near three miles. More often than not,
chariots were pulled by four horses. At the beginning of the races, it is suspected that chariots were
owned privately and the charioteers hired by the owners. Over time factions, a system of
professional chariot racing organizations emerged. The timing of the initial use of factions is
expected to have been sometime shortly after the Second Punic War. The factions seem to have
emerged over time out of need rather than by a specific mandate. The amount of chariot races and
popularity of the sport a public need for organization became apparent. The efficiency offered by
factions was a popular solution to the inadequacy of the previous system. The faction owners had
teams of workers and all sorts of resources for their athletes. The horses, chariots,

Human Dignity In The Butterfly Circus And The Butterfly...
This world has human dignity and in this essay, I am going to state how the butterfly circus has lots
of it. When it comes to people and human dignity some people do not realize what it is. The

The Circus Maximus
The Circus Maximus
The Circus Maximus, located in the Vallis Murcia (valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills)
in Rome, was an ancient hippodrome and mass entertainment venue for the citizens of Rome. The
Circus Maximus was first utilised for public games and entertainment by the Etruscan kings of
Rome. The first games of the Ludi Romani (Roman Games) were staged there under the rule of
Tarquinius Priscus, the fifth Etruscan ruler of Rome. They were in held in early September at the
end of the military year. The games began with a religious ceremony that opened with what Ovid

Contraptions invented to indicate the number of laps that had been run were positioned at each end
of the stadium. At one end seven wooden eggs, representing Leda's eggs from which Zeus' twin
sons, Castor and Pollux were said to have been born. These were erected by the censors Fulvius

dolphins, made of bronze, honouring Neptune, the patron of the equites (horses and riders), were

Most of the charioteers, known as auriga were slaves or freedmen, but if they survived they could

This perseverance could be related to Allende's perseverance in life such as becoming a journalist
and author. Throughout the three Fortunato generations, there was the desired result of a successful
circus. The first Fortunato persevered through "times of catastrophe and turmoil (105)" and "for
years Horacio 's grandfather bore the sole responsibility for the spectacle (105)." His desire to save
and maintain his circus came to the point where he had to perform almost all of the acts. However,
he "managed somehow to survive bad times while many other circuses succumbed and were thus
obliterated(106)." The first Fortunato 's desire to keep his circus buoyant left him to persevere
through all the hard time and come out stronger. The first Fortunato 's son, Fortunato II, was left a
"debt–free" enterprise. He too persevered with an "unshakable prudence" and "under his direction
the circus grew in size and prestige until it was the largest in the nation. (105)" He made it so that
the "enormous caravan no longer drifted aimlessly, as it had in his father 's day, but steamed
purposefully (106)." The second Fortunato was able to make the circus a greater success. His father
before him allowed him to do so through his perseverance and thus created a new, higher goal for
his son to reach. Horacio, the third Fortunato, "intended to be rich from the time he was a young boy
(108). His goal was predetermined and he eventually "lived a good life."

The Structure Of The Circus Maximus In Ancient Rome
In Rome there was a large stadium called the Circus Maximus . The Circus Maximus was a mass
entertainment venue used to hold chariot races, gladiatorial competitions, religious ceremonies and
athletic events. The Circus Maximus was built on the level ground of the Valley of Murcia , between
Rome's Aventine and Palatine Hills. In Rome's early days, the valley would have been rich
agricultural land, prone to flooding from the river Tiber and the stream which divided the valley.
The circus was founded by King Tarquinius Priscus in the 6th Century BC, when the marshy valley
separating Palatine hill from Aventine Hill was drained just for its construction.
The circus maximus was the first and largest Chariot Racing Stadium built in ancient Rome. It
measured 621 m in length and 118 m in width, and could seat approximately 250,000 people, which
was over a quarter of the city's population.
The design of the Circus Maximus included a stretched oval arena with a flat end, which was where
the starting blocks were located. Chariots would enter the track when metal barriers were lifted. A
lavish luxury box was built high upon Palatine hill specifically for the Emperor to oversee the
games. The Circus Maximus design was lacking in one way, as the city grew in population and
wealth, the seating in the Circus had to grow to accommodate them.
Stone counterparts quickly replaced the original wooden seats. Gaius Julius Caesar ordered the
construction and seating was increased to 150,000

this story that really places emphasis on the role racism had in lives of black people would be the

the fact that a mother had to put up a fight twice to win her boys back is ridiculous. In the case of

Research Paper On The Colosseum
The Colosseum Rome's great gladiatorial arena is the most breathtaking monument of the city's
ancient sights. Built in AD 80, this Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, sat 50,000
people and was covered in travertine, shadowed by a huge canvas awning sprung up by 240 masts.
The inside levels of seating encircled the arena that was built over an underground complex where
animals were caged and the stage sets prepared. Entertainment involved gladiators fighting wild
animals or fighting one another. Emperor Vespasian originally approved the commission for the
building of the amphitheatre in AD 72 on the same grounds of Nero's Domus Aurea complex.
However he never got to see it completed before he passed, although it was eventually completed by
his son and successor Titus a year after his death. Marking its inauguration, Titus held games that
slaughtered over 5000 animals and lasted 100 days and nights. Trajan later topped this, by holding a
117–day killing spree involving 9,000 gladiators and 10,000 animals. The outer walls include three
levels of arches, decorated by columns of the Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian orders. Being originally
covered in travertine the walls also had marble statues filling the niches on the 2nd and 3rd levels.
The upper level supported the masts that held the cover over the arena to shield its spectators from
the sun and rain. There are 80 entrance arches, known as vomitoria, that allowed the spectators to

Would you make other people have their dignity restored? Do you have dignity in you?
Lies are one of the major things in which affects this world of wonders, the young and old do it even
you do it yourself. Everyone tells lies every now and then, but if people believe in every lie that is
said to them then they would forward those lies onto other people. When Mr Mendez sees the
(freak) side show and once he arrives at Will's section (which has curtains covering him); the things
that the showman said about Will is horrifying and is a lie. Will believed everything that the
showman said; the showman said ' God himself has turned his back on him and this next thing has

it affects the victim and the victor; they both get a bad influence on each other. How often do you

Sleary And Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism, a philosophy that values the happiness of the general population above the happiness
of an individual, ironically caused more than its fair share of sorrow. Thriving in the Industrial
Revolution's environment of corrupt businessmen, lethargic politicians, and draconian educators,
utilitarianism seeks only quantifiable results, abandoning emotion and imagination in favor of facts.
With its opening exclamation of "Facts, facts, facts!" Charles Dickens immediately makes it clear
that Hard Times intends to critique the flawed obsessions of utilitarianism. Most notably, he
introduces the Gradgrinds of Coketown, an unmistakable product of a society gone dreadfully

Gradgrind, in order to provide better context for the ideological conflict between Sleary's Circus and
utilitarianism. While Dickens conspicuously decorates the circus people with fairytale imagery, he
only seems to arrange these imaginative descriptions around Gradgrind in a situation where it would
highlight his differences. A prime example of this situation is when Gradgrind reminisces the
method he taught his children, annunciating that "the first object of which they had remembrance
was a large blackboard with a dry Ogre chalking ghastly white figure on it. Not that they knew, by
name or by nature, anything about an Ogre. Fact forbid!" Though not spoken in reference to Sleary's
circus, Dickens elaborates on the relationship between the circus people and the Gradgrinds. On one
hand, the circus people readily embrace imagination, it being part of their nature. On the other hand,
when Gradgrind even contemplates an ogre, he is greatly disconcerted. Furthermore, Gradgrind's
thought process further delineates the mindset of those infatuated with the 'facts, facts, facts,'
philosophy. As evident from Dicken's abundant use of fairytale imagery, Sleary's circus symbolizes
both imagination and childhood, neither of which appeal to straitlaced ideals of

The Role of the Circus Folk in 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens
The role of the circus is both complex and simple it is in itself a contradiction; it has been placed
within the novel to add another dimension to the story of Coketown but also to show how fragile
human nature can be. The circus folks role are complicated in their simplicity, they are of course
there to carry out the role that they are paid to perform as actors or performers as well as being there
for the second more complicated role of showing the notion of fancy within the novel. It is this
second role which this essay will strive to discuss and discover.

The modern reader may or may not have recognised from her description of her fathers job that she
was a circus child. When Gradgrind hears her name he becomes annoyed and insists that she no
longer allow her father to refer to her as Sissy but instead he must call her Cecilia "call yourself
Cecilia" (Charles Dickens: page 4 Hard Times 1854). The fact That Sissy's father has a 'pet' name
for her is important because it shows emotion within her family, she has a bond with her father that
we would refer to as affection or even love, Gradgrind and Coketown do not recognise these
emotions but view them as fancy, nothing serious or factual about them. The purpose of the school is
to produce future citizens of Coketown that are uniform and do not question what could have been,
Sissy does not fit within this mould as she feels and by feeling she has fancies which is against the
principal ideas of Coketown.
The reader's introduction to the circus as an event within Coketown comes in what can be
considered a surprising way. Whilst Gradgrind is walking home past the circus he notice his own
children who have been raised on fact alone watching the circus Gradgrind's exclamation of " In the
name of wonder, Idleness and folly" (Charles Dickens: page 15, Hard Times, 1854) is an unusual

one of the animals that she had mistaken for something else. They then got into the discussion of

According to paragraph 19, "... they had talked of nothing else but butter and eggs, and the prices of
things, and now they had as much to say to each other as people who meet after a long separation.
By sticking pieces of their childhood and personal lives in the middle of the story, you can see how
and why the two end up bonding over their memories. In paragraph 25, the wife warns the kids,
"And you better be careful of that, an don't waste it. Your father works hard for his money." This
piece contradicts the description of his wife in paragraph 19. Paragraph 19 provides the background
that says, "In her desire to indulge her boys she had unconsciously assumed a defensive and almost
hostile attitude towards her husband." The wife went from defending her boys with everything that
she had to defending her husband and his

Gothic Literature Research Paper

  • 1. Gothic Literature Research Paper The Structure of Gothic Literature Gothic literature starts with some realistic and some being fictitious, the authors will distributes their stories with characteristics seen in reality or heard in fairytales. Spirits, mystery, and entrapment are gothic characteristics preserved throughout the works of Morgenstern, Irving, Hawthorne, and Poe. Spirts are used between "The Devil and Tom Walker" and Night Circus to show the horrific side of the dead. In "The Devil and Tom Walker", Irving uses the Old Scratch to resemble the devil. As Tom Walker makes a deal with devil, Tom agrees to become a usurer in return he would get availability of the treasure in Old Scratch's service. "The devil take me if I have made a farthing" (Irving 320). Morgenstern's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Morgenstern Night Circus, one in society may only look at small things that could have a huge impact in one's life. Unfortunately, they fail to complete due to the confusion of one's mind. "The smallest charms can be the most effective...It doesn't seem to be very effective" (Morgenstern 247). Now in Poe "Fall of the House of Usher" many just scar their minds due to so much horrific ideas that eventually build up to haunt one's mind. "There was an iciness, a sickening of the heart– an unredeemed deadness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime" (Poe 28). One's own mind can play all sorts of games on you if not controlled correctly. The gothic elements that composed the creation of a gothic literature story were dispersed throughout the works of Morgenstern, Irving, Hawthrone, and Poe. Their fictional stories, Night Circus, "The devil and Tom Walker", "Dr. Heidegger's experiment", and "Fall of the House of Usher" all include spirits, mystery, and entrapment among their works of gothic ... • 3. Role and Concept of Sleary's Circus in Hard Times 'Hard Times' is a Charles Dickens novel set in the social backdrop of the Victorian era during the Industrial Revolution that took place during the 1850s. The ill effects of Victorian Utilitarianism are upheld in this moralistic vision of the writer. Unlike most of his novels, 'Hard Times' is not based in London but in the red and black seemingly monotonous structures of Coketown. That being said, it still realistically allows the reader to observe the systems and structures of society forced to face various economic and social hardships. What preserves the novel as a social commentary is that the struggles in life and human emotions are still relevant "for these times". The rise in capitalist ideals brought forth an age where the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though the circus is a commercial enterprise, it still feels more like a family than Grangrind's household will ever manage to. Mr. Sleary thus, acts as a protector and though he feels compassion for Sissy, he is aware that it is not economically viable for the company to keep her and therefore thinks of more suitable alternatives like her continued education. Unlike Gradgrind who condemns his daughter to an incompatible and unsuitable marriage. The circus as a whole with all its colours is a great visual contrast to the image evoked by Coketown. It is not shrouded by the by–product of its labour, like the soot that coated the city. The circus, here, stands for all that is loyal and free. Nonetheless, there is a certain disdain in which the gypsies are viewed by the "educated" classes, as Bounderby puts it – "we are the kind of people who know the value of time, and you are the kind of people who don't know the value of time". This is primarily because they cannot be restrained by the laws and obligations of society. Dickens reiterates his own personal faith in those people, like the gypsies by highlighting the presence of complete trust, emotions and faith as opposed to the doubt prevalent in most of society, even with all the privileges and high standards of morality they seem to possess. It is able to address issues like education – that is only successful when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Confinement In Water For Elephants By Sara Gruen In the compelling novel Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, there are many various messages to be interpreted by the reader. One of the most axiomatic messages Gruen portrays is that of how one must break free of perceived confinement to discover true love and acceptance. This is very significant in the novel as there are numerous characters who are affected by their internal conflicts. For example, the main character Jacob Jankowski suffered a great feeling of confinement after both his parents die a sudden death. He escaped this by joining the circus, only to find himself imprisoned once again. Only this time by his love for Marlena, an intriguing young circus performer, who was married to the animal trainer whom Jacob's close friend referred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marlena was aware her affair with Jacob is wrong, but Jacob continued to persuade her. When Jacob pleaded with her to see him again, she replied "'I just can't. I'm married. I made my bed, and now I have to lie in it.'" (Gruen 285). This shows how Marlena had little love left for August, but felt obligated to stay in the marriage. This was Marlena's form of imprisonment as she struggled with August's bipolar tendencies and his intense paranoia. Both Marlena and Jacob struggled to break out of their self–inflicted imprisonment in order to find love and acceptance. In the end, when, Jacob and Marlena were able to be together, they finally felt the fulfillment that the love of one another had brought them. On the other hand, elderly Jacob was a free–spirited old man. However; his imprisonment was that of his aging body. He felt that he did not require the constant care and assistance he received at the Nursing Home his kids put him in after breaking his hip. When protesting the indignity of having nurses insist on helping him shower and go to the bathroom, Jacob stated that "'[He doesn't] in fact require help with either, but they're all so afraid [he's] going to slip and break [his] hip again that [he gets] a chaperone whether [he likes] it or not.'" • 7. 1936 Soviet Propaganda The 1936 Soviet musical film––Circus––presents a vibrant, melodramatic production of Soviet propaganda that mainly promotes racial equality and international solidarity of people, both core concepts introduced by the Stalinist constitution (Salys 252). This paper will focus on the grand finale of the film, an event that visually enlightens the viewer with hope through bright lighting, a festive and patriotic musical number and close up shots of an excited and diverse cast. In the form of camerawork that focuses on intense facial expressions and movement, the scene targets the emotional turmoil of society at the time. Through mise–en–scène, Grigori Aleksandrov and Isidor Simkov evoke emotions emphasized by the high–key lighting, which in turn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This song is a great culmination of the Stalinist ideology being portrayed in this film: as a method of maintaining tradition while including cultural variety. The song references how wonderful the USSR is and how there is no other nation that is as free or as tolerant as it. Marius Atilius Research Paper AURELIUS FALCO bid Marius Atilius farewell, thanking him for his hospitality and for his help in convincing the military authorities of Caesarea to go easy on Rubio. As it turned out, Atilius was good friends with Centurion Civilis, hence the invitation to the dinner party. The two had served together in the Tenth Legion years ago, Atilius attaining the respectable rank of Decurion, serving as Chief of Horse Scouts. Upon his discharge, Atilius founded the Red Faction of Caesarea and quickly built up a successful stable system. "I look forward to the day, Rubio. It shall be a savage contest!" "So, my friend," Ben–Atar asked. "What did Marius Atilius have to say, hmm? Will he be able to see your fortunes rise in the Circus Maximus? Will he help you gain favor with the Red faction of Rome?" "He has said so, Simon," Falco returned, nodding. • 13. Speech On Circus Animals A tiger jumping through a ring of fire. An elephant standing on his head. Classic circus animal tricks. The sea of laughing children shriek with delight as each animal performs more and more astounding acts. What if I told you that Nala the tiger is starved, beaten, tortured into submission? What if I told you that every night, Freddy the elephant is chained in a metal cage, his sanity slipping into the darkness? Would you be laughing then? Good morning parents and teachers and welcome to the 2017 School Ethics Forum. Today I will focus on two compelling ethical reason why the horrific treatment of animals in circuses is morally repulsive. One, circus animals suffer fatal injuries during training. Two, the unnatural restrictions of circus life have a devastating impact on the animals' mental health. Firstly, the fatal injuries inflicted on animals in circuses is a direct violation of the ethical principle of harm. Starvation, whips, muzzles, bull hooks, electric pods. These torture devices favoured by circus animal trainers inflict pain and instill terror in innocent animals until they unquestioningly obey every single command. Simple and effective, and cruel, evil and sadistic. How can a trainer listen to harrowing screams of excruciating pain and continue to whip the animal again and again? What kind of heartless monster can watch the soul, the very life drain from a living being and not stop? At every show, Nala the tiger leaps through a ring of fire. Tigers naturally ... The movie consists of several flashbacks following Edward Blooms life and his adventures. It shows how Edward and his son's relationship was very strained and then how it was resolved in the end. There were also a great number of fantasy aspects in this movie that make the movie very unique. These fantasies are mainly in the stories that Edward tells his son. They show how Edward Bloom lived his life and how he made life choices knowing how he would die. Edward Bloom and his son's relationship was not very strong. Edward was always out of town because of his salesman job. When Edward and his son, Will, actually talked Edward would tell his son stories about his life and his adventures. • 19. Circus Creative Writing Screams. That's all I could hear when everything went black. I do not know how, but I am currently lying on the frigid damp asphalt. I hear familiar voices in the distance, and the voices are full of dismay. I recognize the voices as Anastasia's and my parents. I have an abundant amount of unanswered questions. Why is everyone terror–stricken? How did I get here? Why am I unable to move? The next thing I know I hear what sounds like a heart rate monitor beeping in the distance. Although everything seems to be a blur, I start to recollect my day, and it all began at my second home, the circus. As a trapeze artist, I live and breath the circus. I would rather die than not be able to perform my show in front of my amazing enthusiastic fans. As I swing back and forth on the bars that I practice on for an infinite number of hours, I am reminded that with my condition my death could be very near. I remember getting prepared for the show today, and I recollect dripping in sweat because I was anxious to perform in a sold–out show. This caused my hands to perspire more, making it nearly impossible to hold on to my bar. It is a wonderful reflection of the themes of good and evil, man vs. man, man vs. himself and hope conquers all. It can be viewed as a religious film but need not be. Will believes he is the man "even God has turned his back on" in his physical limitations. The story gives a hopeful perspective to which it depicts the capacity to overcome obstacles utilizing passion. Nonetheless, there is an all–encompassing topic to which the author portrays a darker message where the failure to isolate passion from obsession prompts the downfall one's character and the blurring one's judgment. A notable example in The Night Circus would be Bailey's obsession with the circus. Bailey is the son of farmers in Massachusetts and portrays obsessive behaviour towards the circus. "a solitary white glove that has gone rather grey...being kept in a small box with rocks," (Morgenstern 111) and never forgetting about the circus. Then again, his family has extensive desires with him. His dad wants him to take over the family farm and he was conceded into the Cambridge and Harvard. His over the top conduct with the circus clouds his judgment as surrenders all family desires to become a part of the circus. He abandons his family without a goodbye. Bailey can outweigh the circus over his own family and disregard his friends and family who raised him, tended to him and gave their time to him. In this novel, Morgenstern uses the character Bailey to demonstrate the ideas of love, passion vs obsession and standing up for yourself. Love is a very influential idea in the story, without it Bailey wouldn't have taken over the circus. However, Bailey's obsession with the circus makes him abandon his family. His grandma needs him to head off to college, yet his father states he is taking control over the family farm and won't tune in to anyone else. "The easy thing to do would be to let the issue drop... Instead, and he is not entirely certain why, he keeps the subject alive, bringing it up as often as possible." (Morgenstern 107) Despite the fact that Bailey's dad won't tune in, Bailey continues pushing, winding up more forceful with what he needs. In the end of the book Bailey goes to bat for himself and his future. When he is going out with the goal to join the circus and is caught by his sister, he says, "I don't care if you don't understand that. Staying here won't make me happy. It will make you happy because you are insipid and boring, and an insipid, boring life is enough for you. It's not enough for me. It will never be enough for me. So, I'm leaving." White's essays, "Once More to the Lake "and 'The Ring of Time", the author demonstrates two different interpretations of time and how it is used to symbolize meaning to each piece. "Once More to the Lake" is an essay that is derived mostly from White's personal experience while "The Ring of Time" is mostly examining a teenage girl performing at the circus, in the eyes of someone else. Both of these articles give the reader insight of how the author uses the theme of time to show different aspects to the storyline. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast to "The Ring of Time", White's essay "Once More to the Lake" uses the narrator's son to explore the notion of time. While visiting the lake again, he was going to use a motor boat with his son and just by "watching him and remembering the things that could be done with the old one– cylinder engine "(White, Once More to the Lake 3). In that quotation, White is giving example as to how the narrator is exploring the notion of time through his son. As his son uses the boat, he remembers him once using the boat with the same type of engine, therefore he is reliving the past through his son. In similarity, both stories use other people as an object to help you see how White explores the notion of time, and it is all due to his interpretations of each character. White uses the strategy of demonstrating his own perceptions and visions in order to explore the notions and reality of time. In both essays, the author thinks of time as a major theme that gives meaning to the storyline. In "The Ring of Time", White claims that time is moving in a circle. • 31. Social Hierarchy In Jacob's Life The main character, Jacob, never expected his parents to fall out of his life. He had a happy life at Cornell, he was well on his way to earning a degree in veterinary medicine when his parents were killed in a car accident. He felt a sense of powerlessness, he felt lost. He had nowhere to go: his home was empty, and no one was willing to take care of him. The mission in Jacob's life now turned into a mission of survival. He had to learn to become much more dependent on himself. This was hard for him, and led him to walk out of one of his final exams to become a vet. Once all hope was lost, he found a circus that changed the course of his life. There he encountered more powerlessness and survival, both circumstances he already knew. The world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of the central figures in these hierarchy's use power and manipulation to cause others to become powerless. One example of this today would general managers in baseball. They have the power and authority to send players to the major leagues, or the minor leagues. Many of these players depend on their salary from baseball to support themselves and their families. When the time comes for call ups, many of the players are left out, similar to how many of the circus workers were left out and largely ignored by Uncle Al. They are kept in the minor leagues, where the average salary is between $3,000 and $7,500 for a five month season. This salary is lower than a fast food workers, and is a testimony to how minor leaguers are largely disregarded by the MLB. The general managers have the power to call up and send down the players on his team at will, giving him a large amount of power. Another trait that is relevant in our world today is survival. For MLB players, this is a concept they have gotten very familiar with. In our generation, new technologies have been developed that show many aspects of a players play on the baseball field. There is a lot of pressure on MLB players to be consistently good, because the alternative of being sent down is one they don't want to face. This is very cruel, and can also be seen in Water for Elephants. Many of the circus workers have to fight for duties that are relevant to Uncle Al in order to get paid. Uncle Al is similar to a general manager in this regard, as he can decide how much each person gets paid based on their role in the circus. Three baseball players are suing the MLB with hope that they will raise the wages minor leaguers get paid, but there is little hope. The MLB is exempt from an anti–trust law, meaning that all of this is legal. The minor league players all have hope that they can make the major leagues someday, but the reality is that few actually do. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In later years, this lead to the construction of a circus under the first Etruscan king, Tarquinius Priscus around 600 bc. When it comes to people and human dignity some people do not realize what it is. The butterfly circus is a circus where human dignity what the circus is based on. People do what they want until they find the right place to do it, and they do it at the butterfly circus where anyone can be anything, and they can be themselves (who they truly are). In the butterfly circus, Mr Mendez says that the butterfly circus is made up of people who haven't had much dignity in their lives (e.g. they get rejected from their previous work (e.g. Circus) and they were left with nothing. Throughout the three Fortunato generations, there was the desired result of a successful circus. The first Fortunato persevered through "times of catastrophe and turmoil (105)" and "for years Horacio 's grandfather bore the sole responsibility for the spectacle (105)." His desire to save and maintain his circus came to the point where he had to perform almost all of the acts. However, he "managed somehow to survive bad times while many other circuses succumbed and were thus obliterated(106)." The first Fortunato 's desire to keep his circus buoyant left him to persevere through all the hard time and come out stronger. The first Fortunato 's son, Fortunato II, was left a "debt–free" enterprise. He too persevered with an "unshakable prudence" and "under his direction the circus grew in size and prestige until it was the largest in the nation. (105)" He made it so that the "enormous caravan no longer drifted aimlessly, as it had in his father 's day, but steamed purposefully (106)." The second Fortunato was able to make the circus a greater success. His father before him allowed him to do so through his perseverance and thus created a new, higher goal for his son to reach. Allende's father was a diplomat and deserted the family when Allende was just two years. Allende, her siblings, and mother then moved in with her grandfather in Chile. Allende remembers herself as a rebellious child during those years living with her grandfather. "We lived in an affluent house with no money," (Allende, 14). "My grandfather would pay for what was necessary but my mother did not even have the cash to buy us an ice cream. I wanted to be like my grandfather because my mother had a terrible life and he had all the privileges and the power and the freedom and the car I think that was the moment I started to rebel against all male authority: the police, the church, everything."(Allende 15). This empowering attitude that Allledne has is shown in most of her literary work such as The Storys of Eva Luna, House of Spirits, and Eva Luna. Allende grew up in an atmosphere where women were inferior to men and this is why Allende writes stories where the woman is strong and independent. To many readers, Allende comes across as a feminist and empowering author because most of Allende's work is about how women can succeed without the need of a man but don't get this wrong, Allende also is known for her romanticism in her stories specially on a Gift for a SweetHeart. The Stories of Eva Luna by Isabel Allende is a compilation of many short stories focusing on universal themes centering on human emotions. Gift for a Sweetheart is one of these stories which is about a man named Horacio Fortunato who falls desperately in love with a married woman named Patricia Zimmerman. Fortunato overcomes many defeats of both the monetary and emotional kind and through perseverance, he finally gains an audience by his true love. Perseverance eventually leads to the fulfillment of a goal. This perseverance could be related to Alledes persseverance in life such as becoming a journalist and author. • 65. The Structure Of The Circus Maximus In Ancient Rome In Rome there was a large stadium called the Circus Maximus . The Circus Maximus was a mass entertainment venue used to hold chariot races, gladiatorial competitions, religious ceremonies and athletic events. The Circus Maximus was built on the level ground of the Valley of Murcia , between Rome's Aventine and Palatine Hills. In Rome's early days, the valley would have been rich agricultural land, prone to flooding from the river Tiber and the stream which divided the valley. The circus was founded by King Tarquinius Priscus in the 6th Century BC, when the marshy valley separating Palatine hill from Aventine Hill was drained just for its construction. The circus maximus was the first and largest Chariot Racing Stadium built in ancient Rome. It measured 621 m in length and 118 m in width, and could seat approximately 250,000 people, which was over a quarter of the city's population. The design of the Circus Maximus included a stretched oval arena with a flat end, which was where the starting blocks were located. Chariots would enter the track when metal barriers were lifted. A lavish luxury box was built high upon Palatine hill specifically for the Emperor to oversee the games. The Circus Maximus design was lacking in one way, as the city grew in population and wealth, the seating in the Circus had to grow to accommodate them. Stone counterparts quickly replaced the original wooden seats. Gaius Julius Caesar ordered the construction and seating was increased to 150,000 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Racism In Beth Macy's Truevine In the book Truevine, written by Beth Macy, the story of two Albino Brothers named George and Willie who were kidnapped by Candy Shelton, a circus bounty hunter, and separated from their mother for decades. After eventually being reunited twice, and several court cases after, they lived happily together as a family. Consequently, the central theme and key aspect discussed throughout the length of this book would be how detrimental racism was to black folks during this era, the Jim Crow Era. Racism not only contributed to the mistreatment, exploitation and perjury of the Muse Brothers, but to the suffering and deaths of countless blacks nationally. This statement shows how forms of racism contributed to the abusive of the boys, and served to the self– interest of the oppressors. To portray the boys as anything other than human, and justify it with science goes to show how insensitive and disrespectful blacks were treated. Even in the circus for that matter, black performers were treated unfairly. It was only when George and Willie became really popular, is when they were given equitable treatment. More importantly, a segment of this story that really places emphasis on the role racism had in lives of black people would be the custody battle Harriet had to get her boys out of the circus. As Malcom X said "The most disrespected people in America is the black woman". That quote definitely applies to this situation– the fact that a mother had to put up a fight twice to win her boys back is ridiculous. In the case of "Harriet Muse vs. George and Willie Muse, Harriet petitioned a Roanoke court to have her son declared "practically imbeciles" (385). This was Harriet's second time going to court with the boy's circus managers of who made the boys look like a fool and refused to pay them or their mother. • 69. Research Paper On The Colosseum The Colosseum Rome's great gladiatorial arena is the most breathtaking monument of the city's ancient sights. Built in AD 80, this Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, sat 50,000 people and was covered in travertine, shadowed by a huge canvas awning sprung up by 240 masts. The inside levels of seating encircled the arena that was built over an underground complex where animals were caged and the stage sets prepared. Entertainment involved gladiators fighting wild animals or fighting one another. Emperor Vespasian originally approved the commission for the building of the amphitheatre in AD 72 on the same grounds of Nero's Domus Aurea complex. However he never got to see it completed before he passed, although it was eventually completed by his son and successor Titus a year after his death. Marking its inauguration, Titus held games that slaughtered over 5000 animals and lasted 100 days and nights. Trajan later topped this, by holding a 117–day killing spree involving 9,000 gladiators and 10,000 animals. The outer walls include three levels of arches, decorated by columns of the Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian orders. Being originally covered in travertine the walls also had marble statues filling the niches on the 2nd and 3rd levels. The upper level supported the masts that held the cover over the arena to shield its spectators from the sun and rain. There are 80 entrance arches, known as vomitoria, that allowed the spectators to enter and be seated in a matter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Butterfly Circus And The Butterfly Circus This essay is about what human dignity and how it relates to the butterfly circus. When it comes to people and human dignity some people do not realise what it is. The butterfly circus is a circus where human dignity what the circus is based on. People do what they want to they find the right place to do it, and they do it at the butterfly circus where anyone can be anything, and they can be themselves (who they truly are). In the butterfly circus, Mr Mendez says that the butterfly circus is made up of people who haven't had much dignity in their lives (e.g. they get rejected from their previous work (e.g. Circus) and they were left with nothing. Do you have dignity in you? Lies are one of the major things in which affects this world of wonders, the young and old do it even you do it yourself. Everyone tells lies every now and then, but if people believe in every lie that is said to them then they would forward those lies onto other people. When Mr Mendez sees the (freak) side show and once he arrives at Will's section (which has curtains covering him); the things that the showman said about Will is horrifying and is a lie. Will believed everything that the showman said; the showman said ' God himself has turned his back on him and this next thing has been cursed since birth'. No one should be expressed like that. When someone is expressed like that it affects the victim and the victor; they both get a bad influence on each other. How often do you tell lies? How often do you tell the truth? When you think that human dignity is already in this world but when you think about all of the bad things which are happening you realise that people aren't being treated the way that they should be; people lie (about how their thinking), they think that everything is impossible because of the lies, and the people who are treated the way they should are hoping to make others happier and a difference to this world. • 73. Sleary And Utilitarianism Utilitarianism, a philosophy that values the happiness of the general population above the happiness of an individual, ironically caused more than its fair share of sorrow. Thriving in the Industrial Revolution's environment of corrupt businessmen, lethargic politicians, and draconian educators, utilitarianism seeks only quantifiable results, abandoning emotion and imagination in favor of facts. With its opening exclamation of "Facts, facts, facts!" Charles Dickens immediately makes it clear that Hard Times intends to critique the flawed obsessions of utilitarianism. Most notably, he introduces the Gradgrinds of Coketown, an unmistakable product of a society gone dreadfully wrong. Look no further than Mr. Gradgrind, Dicken's personification ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gradgrind, in order to provide better context for the ideological conflict between Sleary's Circus and utilitarianism. While Dickens conspicuously decorates the circus people with fairytale imagery, he only seems to arrange these imaginative descriptions around Gradgrind in a situation where it would highlight his differences. A prime example of this situation is when Gradgrind reminisces the method he taught his children, annunciating that "the first object of which they had remembrance was a large blackboard with a dry Ogre chalking ghastly white figure on it. Not that they knew, by name or by nature, anything about an Ogre. Fact forbid!" Though not spoken in reference to Sleary's circus, Dickens elaborates on the relationship between the circus people and the Gradgrinds. On one hand, the circus people readily embrace imagination, it being part of their nature. On the other hand, when Gradgrind even contemplates an ogre, he is greatly disconcerted. Furthermore, Gradgrind's thought process further delineates the mindset of those infatuated with the 'facts, facts, facts,' philosophy. As evident from Dicken's abundant use of fairytale imagery, Sleary's circus symbolizes both imagination and childhood, neither of which appeal to straitlaced ideals of ... The Role of the Circus Folk in 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens The role of the circus is both complex and simple it is in itself a contradiction; it has been placed within the novel to add another dimension to the story of Coketown but also to show how fragile human nature can be. The circus folks role are complicated in their simplicity, they are of course there to carry out the role that they are paid to perform as actors or performers as well as being there for the second more complicated role of showing the notion of fancy within the novel. It is this second role which this essay will strive to discuss and discover. There are many sides to the circus it is a multi talented organisation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The modern reader may or may not have recognised from her description of her fathers job that she was a circus child. When Gradgrind hears her name he becomes annoyed and insists that she no longer allow her father to refer to her as Sissy but instead he must call her Cecilia "call yourself Cecilia" (Charles Dickens: page 4 Hard Times 1854). The fact That Sissy's father has a 'pet' name for her is important because it shows emotion within her family, she has a bond with her father that we would refer to as affection or even love, Gradgrind and Coketown do not recognise these emotions but view them as fancy, nothing serious or factual about them. The purpose of the school is to produce future citizens of Coketown that are uniform and do not question what could have been, Sissy does not fit within this mould as she feels and by feeling she has fancies which is against the principal ideas of Coketown. The reader's introduction to the circus as an event within Coketown comes in what can be considered a surprising way. Whilst Gradgrind is walking home past the circus he notice his own children who have been raised on fact alone watching the circus Gradgrind's exclamation of " In the name of wonder, Idleness and folly" (Charles Dickens: page 15, Hard Times, 1854) is an unusual ... • 77. Sentimentality Of William Tavener Analysis In "Sentimentality of William Tavener" the events of the plot are ordered in chronological order with brief flashbacks. The story is about a family who lives in the middle of nowhere. The kids of the family work hard on the farm every day and the mother believes that they should have a break to go to the circus. The husband and wife did not have a very loving relationship, so the mother was always defensive on the topic of her sons: the main cause of the majority of their disagreements. The mother went into detail on how much fun her experience was as a child. The husband corrects her on one of the animals that she had mistaken for something else. They then got into the discussion of certain elements of the circus. The topic of the circus soon changed to more recent, topics.
