2. What is the European day
of languages?
• The European Day of Languages, organized in collaboration with the Council of
Europe and the European Union has united millions of people from 45 countries.
Through various activities celebrating linguistic diversity in Europe and promote
language learning.
• The Council of Europe announced that the European Day of Languages will be
celebrated on September 26 each year. The general objectives of the European
Day of Languages is to:
• Inform the public about the importance of learning languages and the diversity
of languages they learn to increase multilingualism and intercultural
understanding;
• Promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity in Europe, must be maintained
and nurtured,
• Encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school, either for purposes of
study, or professional needs, either for mobility or for pleasure and exchanges.
3. Purposes of the European Day
of Languages
• Language skills are a necessity and a right for every one and this is the
most important message of the European Day of Languages.
• OBJECTIVES
• Rich linguistic diversity, which should be preserved and enhanced,
• Need to diversify the number of languages that people learn (to include
less widely used languages), which will result in multilingualism,
• Need for people to develop a degree of knowledge in two or more
languages to be able to properly play their role in democratic citizenship
in Europe.
