2. Assisted Hatching Procedure, Risks:
The assisted hatching technique is commonly used when the
embryo is in the laboratory under treatment or incubation.
Usually after an IVF procedure where the egg is fertilized, the
embryo is allowed to mature into a stage when it is ready to
be transferred in to the womb of the mother. Before this
embryo can attach itself to the womb of the mother it is
necessary for it to 'hatch'. The embryo needs to hatch or
break out from the outer layer which is known as the zona
pellucida. In some cases, the wall of the embryo needs to be
thinned or ruptured before placing it in the womb. This is
known as assisted hatching. This procedure, it is believed,
increases the chances of the woman becoming pregnant.

4. How does assisted hatched work?
Assisted hatching uses laser, acid or other mechanical methods
to make the wall of the embryo thinner. The actual procedure
takes place in three steps as follows:
On the third day of embryo development, a micro tool, micro
laser or a mild acid is used to thin the walls of the embryo and
make a hole in that layer.
In case an acid is used to make the incision, the embryo is
washed to make sure that there is no damage to the embryo.
The woman is given antibiotics since an embryo with a ruptured
wall is introduced into the womb. This ensures that there is no
infection because of the open wall.
5. Success rate of assisted hatching
Doctors believe that assisted hatching increases chances of
pregnancy in selected cases only. The procedure is also used
in selected cases. For example, assisted hatching is extremely
important for older women as the zona pellucid is thicker than
usual. However, according to the NHS guidelines on fertility,
there is no actual evidence to suggest that assisted hatching
helps in improving chances of pregnancy. However, if this
procedure is advised, it is a good idea to talk it out with your
doctor and clarify the effect and the chances of getting
pregnant. This procedure has been successful in younger
women. Since the quality of the embryo differs with age, even
the chances of pregnancy change. The chances are higher
with younger women and the success rate as per age is as
follows-
6. Risks of assisted hatching
The only evident risks associated with assisted hatching are to
the baby who is born as a result of aided IVF. However, since
the outer wall is the only section that is treated, there is no
real risk involved. There are chances of multiple births in case
more than one embryo that is treated attaches itself
successfully to the womb.
