Introduction & Navigation
Stratus began extensive tracking of the use of biological products in 2022 and intends to
continue tracking this market.
- This report excludes rhizobial inoculants for pulse crops.
- Questions about biostimulants were included in online syndicated studies that
were fielded from July 7 to November 28, 2022.
- Growers were asked about brands used, satisfaction, commitment to ongoing
use, and overall attitudes about the category.
1,029 different growers participated in the U.S. surveys.
Throughout the report the sample sizes are often shown in parenthesis with the chart
label, such as “Western Corn Belt (439)”.
More detailed data is available by region, farm size, age and attitudinal category.

SATISFACTION is reasonably good, but there is some uncertainty.
• 55% are satisfied with the biostimulant brand they used in 2022.
• 12% are dissatisfied, and 33% said they “Don’t Know” or gave a mid-rating of 3 out of 5.
• The seaweed extracts have the highest level of satisfaction.
• N-Fixing Biologicals have the fewest satisfied users and the most dissatisfied users.
23% of U.S. growers reported USING one or more biostimulants in 2022.
• Significantly fewer growers in the South used biostimulants in 2022, more in the Central Plains.
• Use of biostimulants is higher on large farms, growing farms; not among older farmers.
• The most common type of biostimulants are N-Fixing products, used by 16% of growers (led by ProveN 40).
• 10% of growers used a beneficial bacteria/fungi.
• ProveN 40, Quick Roots, Black Label Zinc and Envita are the only brands used by more than 3% of U.S. growers.
• Pivot Bio and Novozymes are the clear market leaders.
ATTITUDES about biological products are also mixed, with many growers still negative or neutral.
• 39% of U.S. growers have a positive attitude about biostimulants, despite only 23% using one in 2022.
• The most positive segments are large farms, growers intending to grow their operation over the next 5 years, and those under
age 40.
COMMITMENT to biological products is mixed, with many neutral growers and less commitment than crop protection products.
• 32% of growers who used a brand in 2022 are committed to continuing to use the brand for the next two or three years.
• Commitment is strongest for seaweed extracts; weakest for the N-fixing biologicals.
• Some types of biologicals are similar to crop protection markets in the percentage of users committed to ongoing use but
