ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG) HANDOVER CEREMONY AT MKUNGA NURSING HOME
Over the past one year, PS Kenya in partnership with Astra Zeneca has been implementing the hypertension project aimed at
increasing awareness and improving management of hypertension. This was a pilot project being implemented in 79 facilities (20 private
non-Tunza Clinics and 59Tunza clinics) across four counties i.e. Nairobi, Kajiado, Muranga and Nyeri.
Astra Zeneca (AZ) in partnership with the Ministry of Health spearheaded the development of curriculum that has been used to train the
providers. The providers were trained on hypertension management protocol. We paid a visit to one of the facilities that benefitted from
this project and also to officially hand over an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine that had been donated by Emergency Medicine Foundation
(EMF) in partnership with AstraZeneca.
Mkunga Nursing home could be described as a centre of excellence within theTunza Franchise, and the fact that it is deep within
the ghetto neighbourhood of Dandora (phase 4) will surprise you even more. Evelyne Mutio is the proprietor of the establishment and the
zeal with which she speaks about it is enough to prove that it is indeed her pride and joy.

As we arrived at the seemingly small facility on the chilly morning of the 14th April 2016, we had no clue that our minds were yet
to be blown away by the magnificence of the tiny structure that greets you at the entrance. Sister Evelyn joyously welcomed the Director –
Business Incubation,Wawira Nyagah, Senior Manager – Business Incubation,Wanjiru Mathenge, Health Services Coordinator, David Adipo,
Ms. BeatriceWango (Business Incubation Coordinator), Michael Mugo (Business Advisor) and I to her humble establishment.
After a brief introduction, she showed us to her office, which was a flurry of statistics; this is because she had charts from wall to
wall that captured various information ranging from the number of deliveries over the years to the number of family planning services of-
fered in a year and so much more. Her degree of dedication and passion was truly admirable.Evelyn proceeded to show us through the rest
of the facility, we noticed the sparkling clean floors and walls were a sign that cleanliness is no compromise. She had economically extended
her facility to spaciously accommodate wards that cater for both males and females; a fully equipped laboratory, a minor surgery room; a
well-stocked pharmacy and a nursery to cater for fragile new-borns. The presence of clearly marked and lined dustbins indicated how seri-
ously she considered the health of her patients.
After the extensive tour, we went on to begin the official handing over ceremony of the electrocardiogram (ECG) machine to
Mkunga. The clinic was found to be deserving of the ECG because of its exceptional records and reputation. An electrocardiogram (EKG
or ECG) is a test that detects and records the heart’s electrical activity. It records the strength and timing of electrical signals as they pass
through the heart. The data is recorded on a graph so your doctor can study your heart’s electrical activity. Different parts of the graph show
each step of an electrical signal’s journey through the heart.
While handing over the machine, PS Kenya’s Director of Business Incubation, Wawira Nyagah had this to say: “I would like to ap-
preciate the hardwork of all the key players that made this milestone and I am hopeful that better days are ahead for this facility and many
more in the Tunza Franchise. PS Kenya pledges it’s never ending support for Mkunga Nursing Home and looks forward to greater partner-
ships in the future.”
