OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS APPLICATIONS
• Today advanced communication Technologies
applications for the society
• Industries, Bussiness/banks, Transportation, Household
and Global knowledge;
• Optical communication research is fruit of combined
efforts in diverse disciplines:
• Physics, photonics, electronics, algorithms and
networks;
HIGH CAPACITY COMMUNICATIONS LIMITATIONS
• Fiber capacity crunch
• Today we have noticed 100 Tb/s single mode fiber hero
experiments;
• Theoretical limit are around 200 Tb/s (mainly due
nonlinear effects);
• CMOS ASICs limitations
• Processor frequency does not obey moore law since
year 2000 (Core i7 runs at 3.5GHz)
• CMOS process today is 14nm, and the limitation is about
0.5 nm (two atoms layer);
TOMORROW DEMAND NEEDS AND
TECHNOLOGIES
• Tomorrow advanced communication Technologies
applications for the society
• Medical diagnosis and treatment, traffic safety and
Internet of Things;
• New solutions have to meet not just capacity
demand, but all economical perspective
• More capacity, reduced cost/bit, increased energy
efficiency, smaller sizes;
HOT COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES
• To attend the high capacity demand, several

• Integrated photonics (InP, Silicon photonics);

OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS APPLICATIONS • Today advanced communication Technologies applications for the society • Industries, Bussiness/banks, Transportation, Household and Global knowledge; • Optical communication research is fruit of combined efforts in diverse disciplines: • Physics, photonics, electronics, algorithms and networks;
  • 3. HIGH CAPACITY COMMUNICATIONS LIMITATIONS • Fiber capacity crunch • Today we have noticed 100 Tb/s single mode fiber hero experiments; • Theoretical limit are around 200 Tb/s (mainly due nonlinear effects); • CMOS ASICs limitations • Processor frequency does not obey moore law since year 2000 (Core i7 runs at 3.5GHz) • CMOS process today is 14nm, and the limitation is about 0.5 nm (two atoms layer);
  • 4. TOMORROW DEMAND NEEDS AND TECHNOLOGIES • Tomorrow advanced communication Technologies applications for the society • Medical diagnosis and treatment, traffic safety and Internet of Things; • New solutions have to meet not just capacity demand, but all economical perspective • More capacity, reduced cost/bit, increased energy efficiency, smaller sizes;

HOT COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES • To attend the high capacity demand, several Technologies are promissing for the future of information technology • Integrated photonics (InP, Silicon photonics); • Integrated electronics (ASIC design); • Advanced optical subsystems; • Advanced Transmission/Reception; • Agile optical networks; • WTON main goal is to discuss such technologies R&D&I
