Cosmetics Yes, yes you can! The whole point of
inwall speakers is to conceal their
presence. The speakers are designed
to be airbrushed with the same wall-
paint you use to decorate your wall.
For best results please follow these
steps.
• Priming the grills is not necessary.
But you should sand them for
optimal results.
• Remove the fabric backing of the
grill. You can choose to reinstall it
after painting but it is usually not
needed.
• Dilute the paint as much as the
manufacturer allows.
• Airbrush/spray the surface.
• Do several light coats.
• With each coat, spray from a
different angle to get all the tiny
inner edges.
• Tiny holes can clog with paint. You
can use an air-compressor or a can
of compressed air to unclog the
holes while the paint is still wet.

Questions
Warranty information
As of 2014 we have one of the
most unique warranties in the
audio business!
Most other consumer electronics
companies offer what is called a
Limited Warranty for
MANUFACTURER defects. That
means that only defects are covered
that THEY missed at the factory. The
only problem is, this is the real world
and things happen to speakers that
are USER caused.
What kind of things could go
wrong that WOULDN'T be
covered?
How about a 3 year old playing with
the volume knob while the amp is
turned off, then you turn it on at
100% volume? That will kill a speaker
pretty quick.
Maybe your college student comes
home for the holidays and
unbeknownst to you, has an
impromptu party with your new
speakers?
Maybe when plugging in your iPod,
you forget that your headphone
volume was turned all the way up
and you get that static POP when
touching the headphone jack?

22. FAQs
Speaker Questions Absolutely! Integrating your
computer into your inwall or in-
ceiling sound system is simpler than
you think.
You will need a small amplifier or
basic stereo receiver to boost the
signal that comes from your
computer's sound-card. To link that
to your computer, you will need an
adaptor.
Generally, a 1/8" 2-Male RCA adaptor
would work for this application; it will
go from your computer's sound card
—from the 'line out' to one of the
inputs on the receiver/amp.
The speakers would then be
connected to the 'speaker out' jacks
from the receiver or amplifier. You
can also hook up a powered
subwoofer from there as well.
OR… you can integrate a computer
into your stereo/entertainment
center by using the same adaptor.
You will probably have to have your
computer near the entertainment
center in order to do this, but it's a
viable option for those who want to
include their home computer in their
home entertainment system.
Doing this can take the sound from
your computer gaming to a whole
new level, and give you the ability to
listen to music in an array of formats,
such as MP3 and more! It's a nice way
to use a computer’s capabilities for
enhancing sound.

Speaker Questions A more interesting question is:
How do your speakers compare to
others?
It really doesn’t matter what brand is
printed on them. Sure you can say
the reputation is important, but do
you know what companies have been
up to for the last decade? What
they've been doing is a lot of
consolidating brand names. These
brand names are now just marketing
power.
So, do yourself a favor and educate
yourself before making a purchase.

Speaker Questions The ratings come from a subjective
view on the objective
measurements.
That means that certain
measurements in speakers are
important and others are simply
informational or insignificant when
planning a purchase.
Some of the measurements get
larger overall importance and others
get less of a spread between the
numbers.
These ratings are NOT listening
tests. That said, you can still get a
great feel for how these speakers will
sound because of the importance
given to the aspects that matter
most.
For instance, the materials that the
speakers are made out of account for
30% of the overall index! There are
also no "0"s available to rate.
All speakers have some purpose and
some factor of value. The lowest
score possible would be a 51 and the
highest would be a 100. So lets get
started! The items we review will be
listed in order of importance. The
most important first.

Speaker Questions The woofer is the larger speaker in
the array.
It's responsible for the lowest
frequencies up to and through some
of the vocal ranges. The ability of this
driver to move fast and resist flexing
directly corresponds to how low and
how rich the music will sound.
The stronger, stiffer and lighter a
driver can be made will determine
how fast the driver will respond and
recover during the audio cycle.

Speaker Questions The industry standard of speaker
companies that are serious about
sound is (+ - 3dB). The industry
standard of speaker companies
interested in "marketing" their
speakers is (+ - 9dB).
In audio terms, that's a magnitude of
3 times the amount of power (dB)
expressed. In short, they’re lying, but
rationalizing it.
It's that their speakers CAN
reproduce those frequencies. If a
company doesn't say it's (+ - 3dB),
then they're not being completely
honest with you. However, since we
can't make them all comply, we will
play by their "rules" and give you the
"Lowest" frequency possible in our

The number you're looking for when

Speaker Questions The crossover is probably the
hardest concept to grasp of any
component in a speaker assembly.
In short, it's the traffic cop for
frequencies. But it would be unfair to
say that's all it does. There are
volumes written on crossovers and
tweaks that can be done to the music
curve. However, most of these tweaks
happen in the high-end range of
speakers.
We’re not really rating speakers on
objective standards. These audiophile
speakers are "art" to the ears. Only
certain ears can hear these details.
For our rating system we're keeping
it simple and showing the different
"major" design elements that you'll
find in "consumer" grade speakers.

Speaker Questions What does Wattage really mean?
The short answer is. It doesn’t really
matter.
Overall wattage is essentially a factor
of how much heat a speaker can
dissipate over time before it fails.
All a speaker-manufacturer has to do
is slap a larger magnet and thicker
voice coil inside (that's a wire
wrapped around a toilet roll on a
cheap speaker) and you've got a 200
watt speaker. Now, how does it
sound? How low does it play? How
do those voices sound? That’s the
important thing. But it doesn't matter
to the guy who looks at watts!
OK...it matters a little, but not as
much as you think.

Speaker Questions For theater use we recommend a
5.1 or 7.1 speaker set.
Which speaker set you should
choose, depends on the length of
your room.
If your room is less than 20 feet
deep, you can use 5.1.
If your room is longer than 20 feet
deep, then you can use 5.1 also, but
you may benefit from the 7.1 set up.
The reason 7.1 came around was to
add 2 mid side speakers in between
the front and the back of the room
to sort of "tie in" the sound in the
gap from front to back. These
speakers mount right next to your
seating.

35. Placing the inwall/ceiling speakers
into a theater setup is never perfect.
You always have to compromise
because you want to hide the
speakers inside the walls or ceiling.
It’s not that bad. It’s probably at
worst 90% from perfect sound.
The theater receivers available today
do an AMAZING job of correcting for
those placement challenges with
their sound setup functions. They
actually time align the sounds before
they hit the speakers, giving great

36. FAQs
Speaker Questions Generally 6 1/2" speakers work
best for home theater in-wall and
in-ceiling speakers.
You're already going to be using a
powered sub-Woofer for your
theater room and that will take care
of the low, low bass sounds. A
subwoofer handles frequencies from
about 120 hertz and lower (the low,
boomy sounds).
Some people we have talked to
wanted to use 8" speakers for their
home theater, because they figured
"bigger is better". An 8" speaker is
made a little larger so it can
reproduce lower sounds better. But
in a home theater application, those
sound ranges are already being
handled by the subwoofer, and it
would only be redundant.
What size should I use for theater set up?
A 6 1/2" speaker will produce sounds
from 80-100 hertz on up (mid-range
type sounds like snare drums, gun
shots, and snaps and higher).
If you use the 8" speaker in your
home theater realm it will be slower
to react to those mid-range noises
than the 6 1/2" speaker will because
of it's larger mass. Just like a sports
car will be quicker off the line than a
big truck.
A bigger speaker is generally
not better.The subwoofer
already handles the lower
sounds. A bigger speaker is
slower to react to mid range
sounds than a smaller one.
That’s why we recommend
6 ½” speakers.

37. FAQs
Speaker Questions This is how we test speakers
without cutting holes in our office.
First, we make a large sheet of firm
material. In our example we use a
piece of melamine just because it will
be a little more durable over time.
We make "plates" on the front so
that we can make them for different
sizes of speakers. You don't have to
go to those lengths for basic testing,
just cut a hole that is required by the
speaker and install.
The board has to be large enough to
separate the sound waves from the
front and the back so they don't
cancel out (no bass is the result).
Make the board at least 3 ft. x 5 ft.
How to test speakers?
Just load the speakers in and listen.

Speaker Questions
This type of installation is where
this industry was born!
There are only a few differences
between installing in the wall and in
tiles:
1. Strength of the tile or age of the
tile
If you have older tiles, you may need
to reinforce the installation first. I like
the "low tech" approach. Even
though there are dozens of
companies out there selling "braces"
and "metal frame" solutions, all you
need to do is make sure your tile will
hold the speaker. I use "hardboard"
(think pegboard without the little
holes), as a backing plate. You can
cut a piece the full 2' x 4' or just a
smaller overlapping piece and put it
on the back of the tile first.
Installing speakers in acoustic tiles or drop ceiling
style ceilings.
2. Rattles
Not really the fault of the speaker as
that's what it does...moves in and out,
creating motion in the frames above.
Use patience to listen and pad the
areas that need attention.
Take a look here for some basic
knowledge about ceiling tiles that
you may not get from the
manufacturers of the tiles.

Speaker Questions You are most likely to have tried
the speakers without mounting
them. Our flush mount speakers are
designed to be used in the
wall/ceiling. Any speaker needs an
enclosure to make full range sound.
With our flush mount speakers the
wall or ceiling acts like an enclosure.
When mounted, the sound will most
likely improve 100%!
My speakers sound terrible, what’s wrong?
Scientific explanation.
Speakers need to take full advantage
of the physical laws of the universe to
work, the most important one being
"for every action, there is an equal
and opposite reaction“.
When an electrical current comes
down the speaker wire and into the
speaker the "action" is to initially
move the speaker forward or
outward. The natural reaction to that
'action' is for the speaker to move
backwards or inward. These actions
and reactions create disturbances
(sounds) in the front and the back of
the speaker.
Without being mounted, the
reactions have nothing to
reverberate off of and those sounds
cancel out.
It is important to mount the
speakers in a wall/ceiling for
the best sound experience!

Speaker Questions
The main difference is the price.
That’s because the materials in
these speakers are different.
The ProGold series is comprised of
an Aluminum coated woofer and a
synthetic soft dome tweeter
(simulated silk).
The HD series is comprised of a
Kevlar woofer and a Titanium
tweeter.
The better the materials, the better
sound you get and the more it will
cost.
What’s the difference between the InwallTech
ProGold Series and the High Definition Series?

41. FAQs
Speaker Questions In our experience really expensive
doesn’t necessarily mean better
sound or quality.
Because in the world of in-wall and
in-ceiling speakers we are inhibited
by the encasing of the speaker.
Which is a drywall. You should be
aware at that moment that you're
not going to have the quality of
sound you'd expect from a
traditional free-standing speaker.
The flush-mount speakers themselves
don't really have much more room
for improvement. The manufacturers
can only improve speaker
components in a few ways.
Why don’t you sell expensive speakers?
PLEASE, Don't get us wrong ~
we're all about in-wall speakers...
Most people have been more than
satisfied with our speakers.
But, if you're someone who really
appreciates all the nuances of your
music and you've already spent a
hefty sum on your equipment...do
yourself a favor and prepare your
surfaces beforehand, you'll be glad
you did!
There are some things that can be
improved for greater cost, such as
woofer designs, bigger magnets,
exotic materials, improved baskets,
larger winds, etc. But it all comes
back to the problem of casing
material.
Once again, drywall isn't designed to
handle the vibration and impact of
these improved design elements. So
no matter how much you pay for
your speakers, your ceiling speakers
and in-wall speakers are always
going to be inhibited by the casing
material they're installed in.
≠
We've installed a lot of equipment over the years and we've
found that at about the $300 level you'll get a really good
performance vs. cost ratio.

43. FAQs
Installation In most cases, our in-wall and in-
ceiling speakers can weather the
elements perfectly well.
Anything you put into the care of
Mother Nature, however, will
unavoidably be affected in one way
or another. There will be some
discoloration over time, but it's
nothing a fresh layer of paint can't
cure.
Damage will mostly affect the color
and the housing, but the inner
workings should not fail, since the
great majority of speakers are made
of synthetic materials. Locations with
marine air will certainly accelerate the
discoloration.
Can I use my ceiling speakers outside?
Speakers will work fine in
overhangs, wrap-around/covered
porches, garages, and more.
However, try not to listen to the
speakers in sub freezing
temperatures.They will be brittle
and may crack.

44. FAQs
Installation The short answer is no.
Because the appearance of a room
can change so much between the
framing stage and the finished stage,
it's more prudent to do your final
speaker placements when the room
is completed.
It's always smart to have a general
idea of where you want your
speakers mounted in the framing
stage, and to run the wire out into
the desired stud bays on either
side of your preferred location
while it's still fully accessible.
Do I need a Rough-In (pre-construction bracket) Kit?
None of the speakers we carry come
with pre-construction brackets.
Speaker placement, however, should
wait until the wallboard is up, and
you can look at the room as it will be
when you're living in it.
Then it's only a matter of using the
simple installation systems both in-
wall and in-ceiling speakers provide
to secure it to the drywall.

45. FAQs
Installation Lathe and Plaster can be a
challenge, but yes, you can indeed
put in-wall and in-ceiling speakers
in old homes.
You do have to do some more
preparations.
There are some basic problems
that do come up with this type of
install:
Sometimes there's a layer of drywall
applied over the top of the original
lathe and plaster wall. In this case,
you have to extend the screw length
of the in-wall / in-ceiling speaker as
your wall thickness is going to be
over 1 1/4". You can get longer
screws at your local hardware store.
Can I install in lathe or plaster?
TIP!
It’s a good investment to buy in
ceiling speakers that are all the
same size.
Then you can get a hole cutting saw
that matches your speaker size. With a
hole-saw, the openings will be
consistent in size, and with that tool,
you'll be less likely to crack the
plaster on the ceiling.
If you are installing an in-wall
speaker, use the template to score
the plaster with a utility knife before
you cut the hole (You will need
plenty of extra blades, because the
plaster will dull them very quickly).
Then you can cut the lathe behind
the plaster. Try to keep the vibration
down to a minimum. Try not to use
power tools. Patience pays
dividends!

46. FAQs
Installation Of course you can. However in our
experience the aesthetics are not
as nice as a round speaker.
No matter what you do to align,
measure and prepare, rectangular
inwall speakers just never seem to
appear lined up.
From the floor looking up, the
perspective tends to make them look
askew. That is why the default shape
for in-ceiling speakers is round. The
whole point of flush-mount speakers
is not to draw attention, but if they're
crooked-looking, they definitely will!
Can I install rectangular speakers in a ceiling?
In our experience vaulted ceilings are
the exception. Rectangular speakers
usually look fine installed there -
which is probably related to the angle
of the wall.

Yes, you can.
You can use window screen mesh or
use a piece of batting style insulation
as a way to hold the insulation back
without inhibiting the proper air flow.
DON'T BUILD A BOX!
Batt insulation is really the preferred
method of insulating above ceiling
speakers. It holds back the blown in
insulation when you cut the
installation hole.
If you already have blown in
insulation and doing a cut without
batting above, take a piece of batt
insulation up the ladder with you and
with your last cut of the hole, push
that batt, along with the piece of cut
drywall up into the attic space and
leave it there in place holding back
the blown in insulation.

Installation We feel there are two ways to go
for speaker placement.
The first is in “social areas” where
multiple people are gathering. The
second is in “stationary rooms” where
one person sits in the same place.
In social area’s it’s best to use in-
ceiling speakers placed equally
about the room. One pair for a
15'x15' (approx) sized room. If you're
getting into a larger room, then two
pairs. For REALLY big rooms
(restaurants or such), you should
have one speaker every 15 linear feet
that you have.
For rooms with can lighting, try to
match your speakers to your lighting
pattern.

Wall speakers are best suitable for
stationary rooms. You can take
advantage of that feeling of "stereo"
being in the middle of the two
speakers creating an "image" that's
projected in your minds eye.
The placement here is basically ear
level or a little higher and the width
should be approximately a 45 degree
separation.

Speaker Selector To match impedance means to take a
group of speakers (usually more than
three pairs) and forcing the
combined impedance of the speakers
to maintain an even 8 ohm level (or
another number if required). On
average, most home speakers have
an impedance of 8 ohms.
An Ohm unit measures the level of
resistance—the resistance in a
speaker varies based on the
frequency it is using. A stereo
receiver can operate speakers with
total impedance of 4 ohms or more,
depending on the quality of the
receiver. There's a formula you can
use to calculate the total impedance
of your system when adding your
speakers together in a parallel
fashion (meaning adding + to +, and
- to -). Every time you add parallel
sets of speakers to a system, your
impedance drops. Here are some
examples of common numbers:
What is impedance matching?
By impedance matching the
math is taken care of for you and
gives your amplifier a steady 8
Ohm load. Impedance matching
can be easily achieved by adding
a speaker selector or impedance
matching volume controls to your
new sound system.

51. FAQs
Speaker Selector There are generally two types of
speaker selectors. Resistor based
and autoformer based.
Resistor based speaker selectors
are generally lower in cost than their
Autoformer counterpart. Resistor
based speaker selectors cost
manufacturers less to build, and work
quite efficiently and acceptably for
background music applications.
Autoformer based speaker
selectors are far more efficient than
the Resistor based selectors. For the
die-hard audiophile, nothing less will
do. With these selectors you get
increased highs and lows in your
sound levels.
What is the difference between speaker selectors?
A good rule of thumb when
deciding on which kind of
speaker selector you want is to
match it with the type of
speakers you are purchasing. If
you are planning to spend $200
or greater for a pair of speakers,
then you should get an
Autoformer based selector to
make full use of your speakers'
potential. If you are spending
less on your speakers, then
you'll probably be fine with a
Resistor based speaker selector.

Wiring Questions

These speakers are designed for
walls. Our walls and ceilings typically
have more than 3ft³ of airspace in
them. Most in-wall and in-ceiling
speakers are Infinite Baffle design for
this purpose.
When you constrict an infinite baffle
design’s airspace behind, you
basically squeeze the speaker from
behind and limit the movement of
the woofer (the larger speaker on the
plate) and that lowers the amount of
bass (low sounds) coming from the
woofer. That’s why you shouldn’t
build a box for these speakers.

Wiring Guide
step by step
How to install wall or ceiling speakers?
A simple guide and introduction
on installing ceiling speakers and
wall speakers.
If you are building a new residential
or commercial structure or
remodeling an existing property,
Now is the time to plan for a Music
Distribution System. It's easier than
you might expect.
All you need to start with is an
existing HiFi Stereo System. If it has
at least 50 watts per channel of
output power it should be suitable as
the heart of an entire residential or
small scale business music system.
Speaker cabinets already exist
everywhere in your building. It’s the
walls and ceilings. They are ideal
speaker cabinets. A typical eight foot
tall wall with 16" stud centers has
nearly three cubic feet of interior
space. That is equivalent to a speaker
cabinet 1 foot wide, 1 foot deep and
3 feet tall. Speakers need cabinets to
develop bass response, that is why
speakers in big cabinets are capable
of great bass.
The walls and ceilings which make up
the building serve as terrific speaker
enclosures, at no additional expense
and furthermore allow you to place
the sound source(s) unobtrusively
almost anywhere you wish.
In the case of new construction, by
planning before the drywall goes up,
you can easily provide for Stereo Music
in every room.

Wiring Guide
step 1
Determine which rooms or areas
you wish to provide sound, keeping
any outdoor areas in mind. This will
determine whether you select a 4, 6,
8, 10 or 12 pair Speaker Selector.
Visualize where the furniture and
fixtures will be placed in order to
identify optimum speaker and
decorator jack plate locations.
Generally, in areas where there isn't a
centralized seating or
listening/viewing position, ceiling
speakers are best.
If there is a defined listening/viewing
position such as a sofa, the speakers
should be wall mounted facing the
defined listening/viewing position. In
Home Theater applications you can
incorporate 4, 6, even as many as 8
speakers for ultimate surround sound
systems.

Decide in which room the Stereo
System (Receiver/Amp, CD, Cassette,

Home Run location to which all of
the remote speaker wiring will be
run.
In the wall area here (behind the
stereo equipment), you can
optionally mount the Decorator Style
Banana Jack Plates or Binding Post
Plates. These terminate the wiring
from the inwall/ceiling speakers to
one main location.

It is necessary to install one volume

building will be set from your
centralized receiver/amplifier.

think a speaker may go. Note: the wire is
run in adjacent stud bays to allow
movement either left or right, up or down
on the same wall.
FAQs
Wiring Guide
step 4
You must use CL2 or CL3 rated wire
to meet the building regulations.
While there are many types of wire
that are of a heavy enough gauge to
carry the audio signal, if they are not
CL2 or CL3 Rated they will not be
approved in the electrical inspection
process.
The difference between "regular"
speaker wire, like the kind you see
with clear jackets, is the jacket itself.
CL2 or better wire will have a
jacket that doesn't burn as easily
or release toxins, making it safer to
use in-wall.
All of your wires in the walls of your
house have to have this property.
How to install wall or ceiling speakers?
The common practice is to run four
conductor wires from the location of
the speaker switcher to each volume
control. Then, from each volume
control to each of the two associated
speakers, a 2 conductor wire should
be run.
Each speaker requires a "+" and a "-"
wire. Use at least 16 gauge wire, and
if the "runs" exceed 100 feet, use 14
gauge wire. Wire of 18 or smaller
gauge can cause overheating of your
amplifier or in extreme conditions
may even damage the amplifier.
