1. Part B
The Flipped Classroom
Education is essential in every part of the world. Every region, every nation, every
tamadun needs education to leap and lead in front. You could win a war with weapons but with
education, you could win the battle. This shows how powerful and important the education in
humans’ life. History shows that people try to create new and better education setting throughout
time. We used paper, computer, tablet, internet, video, audio and any other possible medium in
delivering the education to the society. However, we missed the most indispensible essence of
education, how we deliver the education to the students. We have a lot of pedagogical theories
and practices that proven to be very useful in teaching. Pedagogical model is important in
teaching because it determines teacher’s style of teaching. The students could have hands on
activities or is it a student centered or teacher centered kind of learning which reflects the
pedagogy of the teaching. Traditional classroom is one of the most popular teaching styles all
around the world. In short, traditional classroom is where students sit and listen to the teacher
and teacher will deliver the knowledge to the class. This happens in the classroom at school
where teacher scratch the information on the board in front and the students will jot down the
notes. At the end of the class, students will do some exercise and they will do some homework
when they are at home. This is the simplest way of teaching and it is called traditional classroom.
It is very different with the new but not so new pedagogical model called “Flipped Classroom”.
Flipped classroom is very different with traditional classroom. How different? It is all reverse
and it is all poles apart with the traditional classroom.
2. The flipped classroom deliver the learning while students at home typically using video
and audio which students could watch and listen in their leisure time. Teacher will record his or
her teaching that usually being held in the classroom and students could access the video or
audio at home mainly using the internet. Time in classroom is assigned to do all the homework
or experiment or exercise which regularly in traditional classroom, students will do it at home. It
is not a strange thing that the name is “flipped”. You flip everything from home to class and
class to home. The important tools in having flipped classroom is the internet, the computer and
of course the commitment. Students have to do all the learning by watching the lecture or the
teaching all by themselves without having anyone monitors them. The main concept of the
flipped classroom is to have active students because it is a student’s centered type of learning.
Students have to learn by themselves assisted by the lecture video and they have to actively ask
the teacher while in the class. The role of the teacher in flipped classroom while in the classroom
is as a coach or advisor. The teacher or the instructor will help, assist and answer all the
questions asked by students while they do the work. Students might have questions on the video
content that they watch or unclear message that they listen to and the time in classroom will be
used to verify all the uncertain information with the instructor. We can say that flipped classroom
is the leaning where the teaching or lectures were prerecorded and the followed by in-class
activity.
There are a lot of the advantages of flipped classroom. The most obvious advantage of
this type of learning is it is a students’ centered type of learning. In traditional classroom, we
usually have a teacher centered kind of learning where teacher do all the talking and explaining
while students will just sit back and listen to the lecture. Meanwhile, in flipped classroom,
students will listen and watch the lecture video and seek for the extra information needed.
Students will also clarify all the learning in the classroom which means they have to ask around
and not just waiting to be spoon fed by the teacher. The other advantage of this flipped classroom
is the students could rewind or watch the lecture video at any time they like and they could learn
at their own pace of learning. Not everybody could learn early in the morning or later at night so
this type of learning will allow students to learn at their best time when they ready. Students
could also learn while they are on the go. The learning did not stop only in classroom or home.
They could access the lecture video while on the bus or train or even in the toilet. Flipped
classroom has redefined and extend the definition of learning to a broader meaning. The next
3. advantage of flipped classroom is it did not leave parents puzzled with what is going on with
their children’s education. Parents could access the video and see the progress of the learning
that their children have. This will close the gap between the teacher and parents. Parents know
what is going on with the learning which is not happening in the traditional classroom unless the
parents are exist in or attend the class that their children attend. The other significant advantage
of flipped classroom is the time in the classroom is maximized and fully utilized by the teachers
and students to enhance the learning. The time in classroom will be used for students to ask
questions and to do all the experiments, hands on activity, discussion or clarify things with the
teacher. This is not the same with the traditional classroom where the time in classroom will be
spent in delivering the knowledge and students will do all the homework and exercise at home
but if students have questions regarding the homework, they have to wait for the next class to ask
the teacher and this is time consuming and the learning pace is slowing down.
Despite the advantages of flipped classroom that I mentioned above, forget not about the
disadvantages of this pedagogical learning. One of its disadvantages is obviously the flipped
classroom is not applicable at the place where the internet is limited. Internet is essential in
flipped classroom. Accessing the material, streaming the video and downloading the information
regarding the learning require an internet connection. If the place where the internet is scarce,
then the flipped classroom is almost impossible to be held. Moreover, this type of learning seems
not relevant to all level of learning institutions. For now, it is only suitable for tertiary education
where the students are matured enough to disciplined themselves to watch the learning or lecture
video on their own. If we leave a Year Three pupil to watch the video on their own at home,
what most probably will happen? Of course he or she will get distracted with anything else. Plus,
young pupils do not acquire the skill of self-learning which means they still need more-knowledgeable
person as suggested by Vygotsky in his learning theory to assist them while
learning. The other downside of flipped classroom is it requires extensive and careful
preparations which consume time and energy of the teacher. Teacher needs to find time to record
the video which is quite difficult because as we know the workloads are getting heavier for the
teacher. Teacher also needs to acquire new skill in recording the video. A teacher might be
excellent in teaching face to face in classroom but the same teacher might not be able to achieve
the same level of excellency in teaching through recorded video. This requires a whole new skill
if flipped classroom learning style want to be implemented in school. The other disadvantage of
4. this flipped classroom is the students lose the value of face to face learning with their teacher or
instructor. Face to face lecture or learning will deliver not only the knowledge but also love
between the teachers and the students. This is one of the most valuable things that we have to
sacrifice if we want to have this kind of learning in our society.
Malaysian educational system is definitely popular with its own belief and practice where
the traditional classroom method is widely used from the lowest to the highest level of education.
In primary and secondary school, teachers enter the class and talk and spoon feed the students
with learning. The same thing happens at the university level of education. The lecturer enters
the lecture hall and begins to talk and lecture for few hours and leave. This is a typical Malaysian
education system which is not entirely bad but if we have a better option, then why don’t we try
for better education. It is nearly impossible if we try to fully implement this flipped learning in
Malaysia setting. This is because not all level of education in Malaysia are equipped with
technologies such as internet or computer. We even have a lot of rural school which are not
provided with clean water and electricity; far more with internet facility. I am not babbling and
blaming the education system in Malaysia but what I tried to say here is that flipped classroom
method is only suitable for university level of education if we want to implement it here in
Malaysia.
I also personally think that most of teachers in Malaysia are not ready to have this kind of
teaching. I am not saying that Malaysia’s teachers are not capable but we just not ready. This is
because to have this type of learning requires a lot of different techniques which are different
with what we used to do everyday at school. Special course are needed in order to give an
exposure to all Malaysian teachers on how to conduct this type of teaching and learning properly.
Time management is important in this flipped classroom theory. This is because teachers must
find their personal time to produce and create videos for every single day and without good time
management, this flipped classroom is a failed even we have not starts anything yet.
5. In conclusion, flipped classroom is a new way to engage the learning and it is far way
better than traditional classroom that we used to have here in Malaysia. However, to implement
this type of learning in Malaysian setting at all levels are not possible. A lot of preparation and
learning by the teachers themselves need to be done. Nevertheless, this type of learning can be
implement at tertiary level of education in Malaysia since the higher education has less time
constrains compared to any lower level of education such as primary and secondary level of
education. From there, we can slowly implement this type of learning to all levels of education
that we have and for sure during that time, we can have a complete students’ centered type of
learning and we can produce active learners which is a better type of learner than passive learner.
Nothing is impossible if we strive hard enough to realize the dream.
