The Texas Education Agency has issued and implemented major revisions to the chemistry TEKS. Chemistry is usually the first course students take that requires them to understand how to solve problem that can't just simply be memorized. Even though these new standards have been aligned with algebra I, the actual use of this knowledge is in the middle to higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (application, analysis and synthesis). There is also a new emphasis on mathematics that will be incorporated into the Chemistry STAAR exams. This workshop will take 12 (or more) calculations from the revised TEKS that are also documented in the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards and will share teaching suggestions and activities supporting the following: basic conversions and use of exponents, density, atomic mass determination, and gas laws (Boyle's, Charles', Avogadro's and combined)

Why? <ul><li>The best way to reach Texans is to tell them about Texas (and of course, align your talk with the 2010 TEKS). </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Alignment: TEKS (chemistry and algebra), Texas CCRS, NSES </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Chemistry STAAR is looming! </li></ul><ul><li>Theoretical Prospectus: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Most of chemistry requires higher-level thinking skills, but do not sell your students short. If they are interested, they will learn! </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Educational research indicates that high school lessons should be limited to 15-20 minutes and then there should be 5 minutes of downtime (a change of focus) before beginning again—hence the Texas Connections . </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>5-E Model with spiral back emphasis ( Lessons Learned ) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Chemistry is built on change; be willing to change! </li></ul>

  8. 8. Elaboration Beanium T exas Connection <ul><li>You have been given a sample of the unique Macro Element Beanium. Each sample of beanium contains the same amount of each beanium isotope, B. beanium and W. beanium. The average mass of Beanium is based on a weighted average that is determined by the isotope’s abundance in nature. Calculating the average atomic mass of beanium is just like calculating your average in chemistry class. Use the abundance in nature and the average mass of each isotope to determine the average atomic mass of beanium. </li></ul>

Evaluation Average Atomic Mass Texas Connection <ul><li>During the days of the Republic of Texas, the Mier expedition launched a disastrous foray into the disputed area of Texas that was north of the Rio Grande but south of the Nueces River and Corpus Christi Bay. </li></ul><ul><li>Events that Led up to The Mier Expedition </li></ul><ul><li>The Battle of San Jacinto- April 21, 1836 </li></ul><ul><li>General Adrian Woll occupied San Antonio for nine days in September of 1842 </li></ul><ul><li>Angry Texans and called for volunteer to punish the raiders. And return the kidnapped Texans. </li></ul>

Evaluation Average Atomic Mass Texas Connection <ul><li>During the days of the Republic of Texas, the Mier expedition launched a disastrous foray into the disputed area of Texas that was north of the Rio Grande but south of the Nueces River and Corpus Christi Bay. </li></ul><ul><li>Texas won our independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836 when Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna at the 18-minute Battle of San Jacinto. However, our troubles were not over. In September 1842, General Adrian Woll occupied San Antonio for nine days, and when he withdrew he carried off several prominent Texans. President Sam Houston reluctantly responded to some angry Texans and called for volunteer to punish the raiders. </li></ul>

Evaluation Average Atomic Mass Texas Connection <ul><li>To the River ……..and Back </li></ul><ul><li>General Alexander Somervell led the group as far as the Rio Grande </li></ul><ul><li>300 of his men refused to obey and continued their pursuit under Colonel W. S. Fisher </li></ul><ul><li>On December 26 they were defeated at a desperate battle at Mier by General Pedro Ampudia and were summarily led as prisoners toward Mexico City. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Evaluation Average Atomic Mass Texas Connection On February 11 at Salado, south of Saltillo, they attempted a mass escape. After nearly starving in the arid mountains, 176 of the 193 escapees were recaptured and returned to Salado, Tamaulipas, Mexico. (However, three escapees did reach Texas.) Soon after they arrived at the Salado on March 25, 1843, they were informed that they were to be decimated (every tenth man shot) by order of Mexican dictator Antonio López de Santa Anna.
  13. 13. Average Atomic Mass Texas Connections- Evaluation Seventeen black beans and 159 white beans were placed in a vessel and each man was required to draw out one. Those drawing black beans were swiftly shot. Ewen Cameron, who had engineered the escape, drew a white bean but was executed afterwards by special order bringing the total executed to 18. The bodies from the failed Mier Expedition were returned to Texas and are buried on Monument Hill at La Grange, Fayette County.
