Many people use dance to express their feelings, do prayers and to entertain themselves. Dance as what I believe, is the set of movements that could be fast, slow, or regular to music. Last Thursday, May 7th, I attended Spring Dance concert, which was held in Little Theater in California State University, Fullerton, I was very excited since this is my first experience attending concert on-campus. I sat in far right in the middle raw. Specifically, seat no. 101 M. The show supposed to start at 8 P.M so I made sure to arrive there 20 minutes earlier because I did not know where is the little theater. Fortunately, I met one of my classmates, who knew where is the little theater and guided my to there. I have chosen to write about the first four dances (ACT I) because I think the first four dances inspired me in a positive way. Also, I have brought with me notebook to write whatever comes to my mind about the dances to write about it later. Furthermore, I often had difficulties finding the perfect word to describe my emotion. Fortunately, the male sat next to my left gave a great deal of help. Especially, that I have difficulties expressing the words on my mind. For example, I was trying to find another word for weird describing the music, and he suggested ghostly or mysterious. However, after the first act he left. The name of the first dance is A Duke Groove. The title comes from the music. The music is by Duke Ellington, who was an American musician known for his jazz music. I think that the second part, which is groove, means that how the dances can feel and sense the rhythms in the music. Combining the two parts give us the meaning of the dances can feel the rhythms in Duke’s music. The second dance, which is the Six Locks, signifies how the dances were trying to fight against their fear. Especially that they started the show with a door that did not open at the beginning. I also believe that they are trying to show us the importance of not giving up since they tried to open the door many times. After the Six Locks the dancers performed Red Moon Memories, where four young women wore red dresses. The dances were performed under the moon and the dancers narrated their stories through dancing under the moon. That’s why they chose red moon memories. August, the last dance in the first act. Four dancers wore skirts and t-shirts. August dance signifies the days of summer.
A Duke Groove was one of the best dances because they combined jazz music, which is my favorite, with comedic element. Combining these two things helped them to grab everyone’s attention. Dancers in this dance tried to feel the rhythm of this music. They also did a great job displaying comedic and happiness emotion. Everyone laughed in this dance; especially when one of the dancers did not follow the others. The comedic element helped the dancers to start the show by grabbing the audience’s attention. of my classmates, who knew where is the little theater and
guided my to there. I have chosen to write about the first four

performed Red Moon Memories, where four young women wore
2. red dresses. The dances were performed under the moon and the
dancers narrated their stories through dancing under the moon.
That’s why they chose red moon memories. August, the last
dance in the first act. Four dancers wore skirts and t-shirts.
August dance signifies the days of summer.
A Duke Groove was one of the best dances because they
combined jazz music, which is my favorite, with comedic
element. Combining these two things helped them to grab
everyone’s attention. Dancers in this dance tried to feel the
rhythm of this music. They also did a great job displaying
comedic and happiness emotion. Everyone laughed in this
dance; especially when one of the dancers did not follow the
others. The comedic element helped the dancers to start the
show by grabbing the audience’s attention. The dance
performed, as I believe, is still presented nowadays in our
society. I believe the dancers performed jazz dance, which is
described by many nowadays as classical, so I assume it is from
the past. I think that the dance mostly has sharp and strong
movements such as jumps and kicks. Also the footsteps were
complicated. Every dancer had the same gesture as they were
one person, and they were united and organized. The dancers
also used slow movements. A Duke Groove dance had many
parts in it. First it started with group of dancers dancing. Then
it went to romantic, when a male and female were acting as they
were in love. The music and the lights contributed to the overall
dance. The music helped the dancers to get the rhythm to dance.
Even though at the beginning of the dance the lights went
completely down, which helped them to silence the audience.
After 30 seconds or so the lights started slowly to come back to
low level. Not only music and light contributed to the dance,
but also the background. For example, in the romantic part they
used purple background, which symbolize passion, love and
creativity.
The Six Locks dance was kind horrifying at first because of the
music and the background. I think the emotion they tried to
convey to the audience is to not give up. They conveyed their
3. message through showing the audience a door that is locked and
they were trying to unlock it. I also think that they were trying
to show the spectator the importance of fighting their fears. I
believe it express behavioral aspect; especially many people
have the aspect of giving up. The dance seems to me is from the
past because of the music. The movements were slow. Their
movements were almost repetitive. The dancers also used some
kind of fighting moves. I think that light effects on the doors
were cool and contributed more than the music, which was
repetitive.
The emotion that Red Moon Memories brought to is passion to
know their story. The dancers were trying to narrate their story
with enthusiasms. I think they were trying to show their cultural
aspect by narrating their story, and the dance, as I believe, is
from the past era. They performed the dances in circular
movements. Everyone performed their dance alone. The best
part of this dance is using the fog and smokes with lights, which
made it almost clear that the dancers were outside and
performed the dances under the moon. I believe the music did
not contribute in this dance as the lights.
August dance was about four guys dancing in the summer. I
think the emotion this dance brought to me is happiness.
Happiness is what I felt because of watching the dancers
performed what they love under the hot weather. I felt that they
were trying to express their feelings through dance. I also felt
that their dance was in the past. They were dancing to entertain
themselves. Their movements at one time were fast and at
another point it went slow. I believe the key element in this
dance is the music since it expresses their culture and it
somehow made me feel their rhythm. The light s was just
normal. There was not any special effect in this dance.
To sum up, I believe this experience was one of it is kind since
it is the first concert I attended in my whole life. I believe this
experience helped my to learn how to express my feelings
toward people who are dancing. I also learned how important is
the music and the light in contributing the overall concept of
4. the dance. In addition, this experience made me know the
significant of team work in performing the dances. Dance is not
just an entreating method it is about allowing one to express his
or her feelings. This experience made me know how dance
provides mental and physical relaxation. Not to mention dance
is kind of sport.
