Publications
• SimBio's research team regularly publishes on biology
teaching and occasionally collaborates on basic and
applied biology studies involving simulations as well.
Here is a list of some papers co-authored by SimBio
employees and collaborators that are directly related
to our work at SimBio.
• Abraham, J.K., Perez, K., Downey, N., Herron, J.C., Meir,
E. 2012. Short Lesson Plan Associated with Increased
Acceptance of Evolutionary Theory and Potential
Change in Three Alternate Conceptions of
Macroevolution in Undergraduate Students
INTRODUCTION
• SimBiotic Software makes leading software
programs for teaching and research in the
biological sciences. Our software is designed
to present students with realistic simulations
of natural phenomenon and allow them to
learn through experiments, just as scientists
do. Thus students learn both biology and the
scientific thinking process at the same time, a
powerful approach to developing deep and
lasting knowledge.
ABOUT SIMBIO
• SimBio produces software using interactive
mathematical simulations to teach biology in an
inquiry-driven learning style. We also conduct grant-funded
research to understand how to make
educational software more effective. Our products
allow students to conduct simulated experiments
similar to those performed by practicing scientists, in
fields of biology where live experiments are impractical
or impossible.
• SimBio was founded (as BeakerWare) in 1998 to
distribute the second version of EcoBeaker, our flagship
program for teaching ecology using simulated
experiments.
DESCRIPTION
• Sinauer Associates is pleased to offer a lab pack
of six popular SimBio Virtual Labs®, provided
through SimBio's online delivery system. These
labs include:
• Finches and Evolution:
This laboratory explores how selection can act on
two multi-locus traits as the selection regime
changes. The experimental system is beak width
and depth of Darwin’s finches in wet and dry...
Virtual Biology Labs and Lessons for
Advanced High School Classes
• Although developed for college classes, our
simulated laboratories are easily integrated into
advanced high school biology and environmental
science lesson plans. Based on feedback from
teachers, we created special collections of our
college labs covering topics from osmosis and the
cell cycle to natural selection and Hardy-
Weinberg equilibrium to ecology. These specially
discounted "high school only" collections are
great on their own or as complements to field
and wet labs and provide students a taste of the
college curriculum.
High School: Advanced Placement,
International Baccalaureate
• Cell Biology 101
• Both labs from our popular OsmoBeaker suite as well as
the Mitosis & Meiosis Explored™ interactive tutorials are included
in this package.
• Evolution 101
• Our most popular introductory college-level labs from our
popularEvoBeaker suite are included in this package.
• Environmental Science 101
• Our best introductory college-level labs from our
flagship EcoBeakersuite are included in this package.
• The Complete 101 Collection for AP* Biology
• All of the contents from the above three collections are included in
one convenient package! Best Value!

CONCLUSION
• Students learn both biology and the scientific thinking
process at the same time, a powerful approach to
developing deep and lasting knowledge. The EcoBeaker
line is used on hundreds of college campuses and high
schools around the world for teaching ecology,
evolutionary biology, and environmental science. The
EvoBeaker line is designed specifically for teaching
evolution and is available for free at the Simbiotic
Software website. Also coming soon are programs for
teaching neurobiology, and for teaching osmosis and
diffusion. All software runs on both Macintosh (r) and
Windows (r) platforms. EcoBeaker, EcoBeakerHS, and
EvoBeaker are all trademarks of SimBiotic Software.
