ABSTRACT
There are myriads of variables responsible for youth unemployment problem
particularly in Nigeria and other developing countries. Consequently, it is necessary to
obtain comprehensive data on the variables to blame for youth unemployment to chart
direction for further research and provide guide for stakeholders on the pathway to
solving the problem. Factors accountable for youth unemployment problem were
abstracted from literature and presented. Frequency distribution of the factors causing
youth unemployment based on researches unproven opinion showed that, fast population
growth, rural to urban migration and lack of employable skills and experience among the
youth are predominantly factors to blame among other variables. Thus, the information

1. INTRODUCTION
There are multitudes of factors responsible for youth unemployment problem particularly in
Nigeria but holistic document on the variables that characterize the problem is lacking.
Consequently, it is pertinent to establish comprehensive information of the variables that are to
blame for youth unemployment problem especially in Nigeria. The information will chart a new
direction for further research on the topic area and provide a guide for policy makers on the
pathway to solving youth unemployment problem.
The youth are vital productive asset in nation building particularly in a developing economy
like Nigeria. However, if the youth are not meaningfully engaged, they become security,
socioeconomic and political threat to the nation as we are witnessing today in Nigeria such as
kidnapping, militancy, Boko-Haram, Political thuggery, agitation for secession among other
vices. The urgent need to holistically document the variables causing youth unemployment

problem is inevitable for intervention by stakeholders. In Nigeria for instance, government had
instituted different intervention programmes to create employment for the youth such as National
Directorate of Employment (NDE), Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Program (SURE-
P), National Youth Services Corps (NYSC) among others to address youth unemployment
problem but all the efforts are mirages because the programmes are not sustainable. National
Youth Development Policy and [22] defined youth as persons between the age of 18 and 35 years.
Unemployment defined by International Labour Organisation (ILO), is when people seek for job
and they can’t find any within a period of time.
[3] Stressed the need for government to promote creation of industries and grow agricultural
sector to facilitate youth unemployed and encourage entrepreneurship and vocational training
among youth. [7] Proposed vocational and entrepreneurial training programmes to curb youth
unemployment problems. [24] Emphasized encouragement of youth to undertake entrepreneurial
and managerial skills training. [25] Noted that unemployment is a worldwide problem but it is
acute in developing economies. Unemployment problem in Nigeria in Nigeria is growing
geometrically while employment is growing arithmetically occasioned by many factors. [12]
Asserted that youth development and empowerment can curtail youth unemployment. [9] Noted
that development of Nigeria is a function of youth empowerment through entrepreneurship
because they are the pillar in transition economy like Nigeria.
Myriads of factors that constitute youth unemployment problem have been identified in
literature as depicted in table 1.

2. CONCLUSION
Efforts of researchers over the decades on factors responsible for youth unemployment have been
summarized and documented. It is evidence from the forgoing that rapid population growth; rural
to urban migration and lack of employable skills and experience among other variables are the
major factors constituting youth unemployment problem in recent time. Consequently,
stakeholders should focus on addressing these factors to mitigate the problem of youth
unemployment. However, further investigation is required to analyze to obtain supporting
evidence on the primary factors causing youth unemployment problem to guide intervention and
implementation strategy by the stakeholder to assuage the problem.

O, Afolalu S. A and Udo M. O College of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Department, Covenant University, Ota, ABSTRACT There are myriads of variables responsible for youth unemployment problem particularly in Nigeria and other developing countries. Consequently, it is necessary to obtain comprehensive data on the variables to blame for youth unemployment to chart direction for further research and provide guide for stakeholders on the pathway to solving the problem. Factors accountable for youth unemployment problem were abstracted from literature and presented. Frequency distribution of the factors causing youth unemployment based on researches unproven opinion showed that, fast population growth, rural to urban migration and lack of employable skills and experience among the youth are predominantly factors to blame among other variables. Thus, the information provided suggest direction from where to start addressing youth unemployment problem by stakeholders and policy makers while further research is required to pinpoint the primary causes of the problem with proven evidence. Keywords: Youth, unemployment, factors Cite this Article: Ongbali S. O, Afolalu S. A and Udo M. O, Factors Causing Youth Unemployment Problem in Nigeria: A Review, International Journal of Mechanical Engineering and Technology, 10(01), 2019, pp.1847–1879 http://www.iaeme.com/IJMET/issues.asp?JType=IJMET&VType=10&Type=01 1. INTRODUCTION There are multitudes of factors responsible for youth unemployment problem particularly in Nigeria but holistic document on the variables that characterize the problem is lacking. Consequently, it is pertinent to establish comprehensive information of the variables that are to blame for youth unemployment problem especially in Nigeria. The information will chart a new direction for further research on the topic area and provide a guide for policy makers on the pathway to solving youth unemployment problem. The youth are vital productive asset in nation building particularly in a developing economy like Nigeria. However, if the youth are not meaningfully engaged, they become security, socioeconomic and political threat to the nation as we are witnessing today in Nigeria such as kidnapping, militancy, Boko-Haram, Political thuggery, agitation for secession among other vices. The urgent need to holistically document the variables causing youth unemployment
  • 2. Ongbali S. O, Afolalu S. A and Udo M. O http://www.iaeme.com/IJMET/index.asp 1875 editor@iaeme.com problem is inevitable for intervention by stakeholders. In Nigeria for instance, government had instituted different intervention programmes to create employment for the youth such as National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Program (SURE- P), National Youth Services Corps (NYSC) among others to address youth unemployment problem but all the efforts are mirages because the programmes are not sustainable. National Youth Development Policy and [22] defined youth as persons between the age of 18 and 35 years. Unemployment defined by International Labour Organisation (ILO), is when people seek for job and they can’t find any within a period of time. [3] Stressed the need for government to promote creation of industries and grow agricultural sector to facilitate youth unemployed and encourage entrepreneurship and vocational training among youth. [7] Proposed vocational and entrepreneurial training programmes to curb youth unemployment problems. [24] Emphasized encouragement of youth to undertake entrepreneurial and managerial skills training. [25] Noted that unemployment is a worldwide problem but it is acute in developing economies. Unemployment problem in Nigeria in Nigeria is growing geometrically while employment is growing arithmetically occasioned by many factors. [12] Asserted that youth development and empowerment can curtail youth unemployment. [9] Noted that development of Nigeria is a function of youth empowerment through entrepreneurship because they are the pillar in transition economy like Nigeria. Myriads of factors that constitute youth unemployment problem have been identified in literature as depicted in table 1.
