SAP HANA is an in-memory, column-oriented, relational database management system developed and marketed by SAP SE.
Its primary function as a database server is to store and retrieve data as requested by the applications
2. SAP HANA
An Unrivaled Platform for the Digital Age
SAP HANA is an in-memory, column-oriented, relational database management system developed
by SAP.
Primary Function: To store and retrieve data as requested by the applications.
Additional Functions:
● Advanced analytics – predictive analytics, spatial data processing, text analytics, text search, streaming
analytics, graph data processing
● Extract, transform, load (ETL) capabilities
● Application server
3. SAP HANA Architecture
The heart of SAP HANA is SAP In-Memory Database, it
is a parallel processing data storage that combines row
based, column based, and object based storage
techniques. SAP HANA runs the SUSE Linux Server as
an operating system.
4. SAP HANA | Components
SAP Host Agent: The SAP Host Agent helps in
managing the system and Software Update
Manager (SUM) and is also used by the
Adaptive Computing Controller (ACC).
LM Structure: This component holds
information on the current installation details
for SAP HANA. In the case of automatic
updates, the data stored in LM structure is used
by SUM.
SAP HANA Studio Repository: This component
is used to update the SAP HANA Studio to
advanced versions. It is also used by the end
users.
SAP Solution Manager Diagnostic Agent: This component is
used for monitoring the SAP HANA systems and offers all data to
SAP Solution Manager (SAP SOLMAN) along with information
about the current database state.
This component is also responsible for offering common data
about the system, such as alerts, memory or CPU and disk usage
after the SAP SOLMAN is merged with the SAP HANA system.
Software Update Manager for SAP HANA: The Software Update
Manager provides updates of SAP HANA from the SAP
Marketplace automatically. It is also responsible for the updates
on fixing the SAP host agent. This component is also vital for the
distribution of the SAP HANA Studio repository to end users.
5. How SAP HANA Works
● SAP HANA is designed to replicate and absorb structured data from SAP and various non-SAP relational
databases, applications, and other systems.
● SAP HANA mainly supports the following three styles of data replication:
- Trigger Based
- ETL Based
- Log Based
● The style of replication used is dependent on the source system. Once the data is replicated, it is stored in the
RAM and not on the disk, unlike the traditional form of application data storage.
● As the data is stored in memory, it allows the system to access data in real time with the help of analytic and
transactional applications that sit on top of HANA.
6. How SAP HANA Works | Types of Replication
Trigger based: The SAP Landscape
Transformation Replication is a type
of trigger based data replication in
the SAP HANA system. It is the best
suitable for replicating real time
data from SAP and non-SAP
sources.
ETL based: The ETL based replication in
SAP HANA uses the SAP Data Services
for migration of services from SAP or
non-SAP source system to target the
HANA database. It uses the BODS
system as an ETL tool to extract,
transform and load data between the
source system and the target system.
Log based: This method of replication
is database dependent. It is based on
recording table changes from low level
database log files. Once the changes
are captured it is then populated to
each database transactions and then
they are replayed on the HANA
database. This helps in maintaining
consistency.
