The fundamental functionality of SYNAPSE is to act as a smart street lighting control
system. It allows you to control and monitor every luminaire in your street lighting
installation with ease either manually or using schedules, as individual devices or
in zones. This alone can provide immense energy savings and reduce maintenance

Functionality
FULL SYSTEM AWARENESS
SYNAPSE provides in-depth information about everything happening is the system
including real-time feedback of any changes and detailed electrical parameters for
each luminaire: Wh, WARh, V, W, A, WAR, PF, and frequency. The harvested data is
transformed into actionable information through the SYNAPSE ANALYTICS software
and presented as notifications, tables, diagrams, and reports.
REMOTE ON / OFF CONTROL
Any street luminaire can be controlled by SYNAPSE using manual or scheduled
individual or group control, and even adaptive control based on the use of ambient
lighting, motion detection, and other sensors.
DIMMING
SYNAPSE supports DALI dimming of the street lighting. This means the lighting can
adapt to real-time or expected needs according to the day or time of day. During
times of low traffic and urban activity, lighting can be safety dimmed to a desired
level, which greatly contributes to energy savings and reductions in CO2
emissions
as well as extending the lifetime of the light sources. Also, dimming the lighting

SMART SCHEDULES
Luminaires included in a SYNAPSE smart street lighting system operate autonomously

TRAFFIC FLOW
Traffic is an issue in every city, town, and village. Especially in more dense urban
areas, the number of vehicles on the road can prove to be rather difficult to manage.
SYNAPSE enables the incorporation of traffic sensors that detect real-time traffic
volume, road occupancy, and average travel speed of vehicles by road or lane. The
sensors can also categorise vehicles by size and speed. The collected data can help
cities manage road capacity and urban access as well as enable citizens to plan
journeys based on current traffic conditions.
PARKING MADE EASY
Finding a parking space can be frustrating and results in a higher expenditure of fuel
and, therefore, more pollution. SYNAPSE smart parking sensors are installed directly
on the surface of parking spaces to detect the presence of vehicles using magnetic
sensing. They provide real-time data about which parking spaces are full and which are
empty. This data, used in conjunction with a smart parking app, allows drivers to locate
empty spaces easily and quickly, saving time, reducing stress, and minimising pollution.
URBAN MANAGEMENT
SYNAPSE also allows for the incorporation of sensors that measure things other than
what is happening on the road. Core to the development of Smart Cities is the ability
to easily and intelligently manage day-to-day activities like resource consumption
and waste control. SYNAPSE provides a perfect platform for inclusion of smart utility
metering such as the measuring of industrial, commercial, and domestic electricity,
water, and gas usage. Sensors can also be used that measure when dumpsters are

AIR QUALITY
Approximately 80 % of our cities have higher levels of air pollution than acceptable
and air pollution is now considered the single biggest environmental health risk.
Air pollution consists of various things such as car and industrial fumes, and dust

The top level of the software can be shown as a satellite
map of the whole system or as a map/dashboard for
a selected luminaire, lighting panel, or node (shown
right) within which there can be an infinite number
of tabs. The dashboard can be customised by the
organisation and even by individual users in order to
provide the best and most effective user experience.
The information box on the right of the map allows
for the execution of commands and offers information
about the selected device.
The left side of the screen shows a menu divided into
three parts: groups, lighting panels, and notifications.
DEVICE PARAMETERS
Based on custom configuration, the system can send
instant or automated information about device status,
last given command, and various electrical paramters:
W, V, current, PF, apparent energy, apparent power, on
time, and others.
DEVICE OVERVIEW
When a particular luminaire is selected, a number
of tabs appear. The first is the Overview tab, which
displays information about the device and several
basic device readings.
In addition to the Overview tab are several other tabs
showing device notifications and providing access
to charts, reports, and configuration and scheduling
options.
DEVICE ENERGY CONSUMPTION
The real-time energy parameters of each device can
be visualised as easy-to-understand charts. It is also
possible to select relevant data from the past and to
create reports covering a defined span of time.

When selecting the Properties tab for a selected
luminaire, you can see real-time information about the
properties and configuation of the device. Access to
the the configuration is password protected.

NODES
Acting as the neurons of the city's central nervous system, Nodes are incorporated
into individual light points to harvest data about the luminaires (real-time power
consumption, temperature, device status) and the environment (air quality, ambient
conditions, traffic and parking, utilities consumption, waste status, and more). The
data harvested by the Nodes is used for local, precision control of the lighting ac-
cording to real-time need.
SYNAPSE LIGHTING PANEL CONTROL & MONITORING MODULE
The SYNAPSE Lighting Panel Control & Monitoring Module serves as a Node on the
electrical grid to monitor and control its basic parameters and functions. It is installed
in distribution boxes and carries out autonomous measurement and analysis of

The SYNAPSE Lighting Panel Control & Monitoring Module provides autonomous
lighting panel operation and carries out measurements and analysis of various
electrical parameters on the street lighting grid.
FEATURES:
• Autonomous operation based on pre-defined schedules.
• Monitoring of a wide range of electrical parameters on the street lighting grid:
PF, V, current, frequency, active/reactive/apparent power, and daily active/reactive
energy.
• Configuration options: current transformer ratio, voltage/power thresholds, and
daytime/nighttime consumption thresholds.
• Reports errors and malfunctions to the Network Server in real-time: under/over
power, under/over voltage, phase failure.

A SYNAPSE Gateway is the cental communication device in a LoRa™
network,
providing a radio link to any compatible Node within range. There are several
manufacturers of LoRaWAN™
compatible base stations. SYNAPSE Gateways are
compatible with most solutions on the market.

• Can connect up to 5000 Nodes.
• Operates over a 3–5 km range (dependent on urban density).
• Functions autonomously for up to 20 years with battery operated devices.
• Operates across a wide spectrum of radio frequencies to ensure global
compatibility: 433 MHz, 868 MHz, 915 MHz, etc.
• High inteference immunity thanks to communication with multiple devices
on different bands and channels and using various spread factors, all without
interfering with each other.

alerting when unusual activity is detected, or waste disposal services for removal of

Almost 6.5 billion Internet of Things devices were already connected by the end of
2015, and 50 billion are estimated to be connected by the end of 2020. LoRaWAN™
