This writing assignment asks students to write a short story of 650 words or less set in one of five location options: an airport terminal, art gallery, sacred space, hotel/motel, or outdoors. Students are instructed to describe the setting in detail using sensory images and have the location influence and motivate the main character, driving the story to a conclusion.

1. Focus: A sense of space
Writng assignment: write a story set in one of the following
locations. Begin decribing the space immediately and supply
fresh images and sensroy details throughout your story to bring
the space to life.
- airport terminal
- art gallery
- some sacred space ( i.e. cathedral, temple. etc.)
-hotel/motel
-outdoors (public park; the wilderness. etc)
Allow the setting to influence your charater in some way (i.e.
cause a conflict; cause him/her to reminisce; etc) and proivde
the fuel that causes your charater to act and move the story
towards some sort of conclusion
