At the age of nine, Anita moved from a small town to a big city because her father was transferred to a new job. Anita entered fifth grade in the middle of the term and was immediately ostracized by her female classmates. Anita begged her parents to send her back to her old school. Two girls began tripping Anita in the halls and taking items from her, starting with small items such as school supplies and graduating to larger items such as jewelry and clothes. Anita started leaving for school in the morning, then circling back home when her parents left for work.

This is an electronic template for papers written according to the style of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2020) as outlined in the seventh edition of the
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The purpose of the template is to help students set the margins and spacing. Margins are set at 1 inch for top, bottom, left, and right. The text is left-justified only; that means the left margin is straight, but the right margin is ragged. Each paragraph is indented 0.5 inch. It is best to use the tab key to indent, or set a first-line indent in the paragraph settings. The line spacing is double throughout the paper, even on the reference page. One space is used after punctuation at the end of sentences. The font style used in this template is Times New Roman and the font size is 12 point. This font and size is required for GCU papers.
The Section Heading
The heading above would be used if you want to have your paper divided into sections based on content. This is a Level 1 heading, and it is centered and bolded, and the initial word and each word of four or more letters is capitalized. The heading should be a short descriptor of the section. Note that not all papers will have headings or subheadings in them. Papers for beginning undergraduate courses (100 or 200 level) will generally not need headings beyond Level 1. The paper title serves as the heading for the first paragraph of the paper, so “Introduction” is not used as a heading.
Subsection Heading
The subheading above would be used if there are several sections within the topic labeled in a first level heading. This is a Level 2 heading, and it is flush left and bolded, and the initial word and each word of four or more letters is capitalized.
Subsection Heading
APA dictates that you should avoid having only one subsection heading and subsection within a section. In other words, use at least two subheadings under a main heading, or do not use any at all. Headings are used in order, so a paper must use Level 1 before using Level 2. Do not adjust spacing to change where on the page a heading falls, even if it would be the last line on a page.
The Title Page
When you are ready to write, and after having read these instructions completely, you can delete these directions and start typing. The formatting should stay the same. You will also need to change the items on the title page. Fill in your own title, name, course, college, instructor, and date. List the college to which the course belongs, such as College of Theology, College of Business, or College of Humanities and Social Sciences. GCU uses three letters.

On-screen Graphic: A few minutes have passed since the HSP’s most recent
meeting with John regarding the status of his visitation rights, and she sits alone
in her office reflecting on her thoughts about the case and, specifically, her
ethical requirements as part of her role as a HSP.
On-screen Visual: The HSP sits alone at the table in the coffee shop and reflects
on her meeting with John.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – Here I have this client, John, who’s charged with
domestic violence against his boys’ mother. Normally I’d consider this a clear
signal of a possible threat.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – The safety and well-being of the children is always
paramount in any case, but knowing John’s story and circumstances of his
criminal charge and his history as a teacher, coach, and father to these two
young boys, I can’t help but to feel some bit of sympathy for him. He hasn’t had
any previous history of violence or conflicts with law enforcement. The guy just
wants to reconnect with his children after having been away from them for more
than 2 weeks.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – It seems to me that if John’s wife, Chahana, had a
better handle on her own personal situation all of this could have been avoided. I
mean she was in bed with his cousin. Anybody would be in a fit of rage if they
came home to that.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – Let’s take step back here. I have enough experience
with this to know there are no simple stories or simple solutions in this field.
That’s one of the challenges I enjoy about this job. Also, I have to make sure
that I am not letting personal values and emotions cloud my professional
judgment.

family? What can I do in the immediate future to assist this family with their
current situation?

1. Prepare a 5 to 8 minute speech giving information about a topic. (Do not take sides on a controversial issue.)
2. You may use four note cards with key words or phrases—front of cards only. Do not write out your speech. Show me the notecards after your speech.
3. Three references are required from books, magazines, newspapers and/or interviews. These references must be cited in your speech. Do not use Wikipedia as a source. Grandmother Ella has been dealing with cancer for years now and has tried alternative remedies and juicing. She went into remission for some time, but now the cancer has returned and she is in the hospital. Her husband, of American Indian descent, has his ideas about what needs to be done as Ella comes to the end of her life. Ella has her preferences, though she is now so weak that she has given up in many ways. Sources: Minimum of 6. At least 3 of these must be from scholarly journals, and all sources should be selected based on reliability, currency, and level of information/analysis. The UMUC library will be very useful in helping you find appropriate sources. You can, but do not have to, include all of the sources from your annotated bibliography.
Due date and revision: The first draft of the research paper is due by the end of Week 5. Submit your draft as an attachment (Microsoft Word is preferred) to this assignment folder. This should be as complete a draft as possible, in order to receive the most helpful feedback. In working on your draft, you may want to look at the rubric that will ultimately be used to grade your final paper. You can see it when viewing these instructions through the Assignments area of the classroom.
During Week 6, you will receive feedback on your draft.
You will then revise your paper and submit it by the end of Week 7 to the folder "Assignment 3: Research Paper, revised draft." This version will be graded using the rubric and will count for 30% of your course grade.

At the age of nine, Anita moved from a small town to a big city because her father was transferred to a new job. Anita entered fifth grade in the middle of the term and was immediately ostracized by her female classmates. Anita begged her parents to send her back to her old school. Her parents assumed she was lonely and reassured her that things would get better soon.
Two girls began tripping Anita in the halls and taking items from her, starting with small items such as school supplies and graduating to larger items such as jewelry and clothes. They would “accidentally” elbow her in the stomach as they walked by, threw things at Anita when teachers were not looking, and whispered derogatory names to her. Anita started leaving for school in the morning, then circling back home when her parents left for work.
One day, Anita’s mother caught her in the attempt, but Anita refused to explain her actions. Reluctantly, she returned to school only to find the same two girls waiting for her in the restroom. They kicked her and pulled her hair. Anita returned to class teary-eyed and disheveled, but refused to talk to the teacher. After class, her teacher encouraged her to talk to the school counselor, where Anita finally broke down and confessed what had been occurring.
We have learned that taking a social ecological approach (i.e., altering the environment) can be an important component to an intervention plan. As the school counselor, you must work with the school and Anita’s family to intervene on her behalf.

Typing Template for APA Papers: A Sample of Proper Formatting for APA Style
This is an electronic template for papers written according to the style of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2020) as outlined in the seventh edition of the
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The purpose of the template is to help students set the margins and spacing. Margins are set at 1 inch for top, bottom, left, and right. The text is left-justified only; that means the left margin is straight, but the right margin is ragged. Each paragraph is indented 0.5 inch. It is best to use the tab key to indent, or set a first-line indent in the paragraph settings. The line spacing is double throughout the paper, even on the reference page. One space is used after punctuation at the end of sentences. The font style used in this template is Times New Roman and the font size is 12 point. This font and size is required for GCU papers.
The Section Heading
The heading above would be used if you want to have your paper divided into sections based on content. This is a Level 1 heading, and it is centered and bolded, and the initial word and each word of four or more letters is capitalized. The heading should be a short descriptor of the section. Note that not all papers will have headings or subheadings in them. Papers for beginning undergraduate courses (100 or 200 level) will generally not need headings beyond Level 1. The paper title serves as the heading for the first paragraph of the paper, so “Introduction” is not used as a heading.
Subsection Heading
The subheading above would be used if there are several sections within the topic labeled in a first level heading. This is a Level 2 heading, and it is flush left and bolded, and the initial word and each word of four or more letters is capitalized.
Subsection Heading
APA dictates that you should avoid having only one subsection heading and subsection within a section. In other words, use at least two subheadings under a main heading, or do not use any at all. Headings are used in order, so a paper must use Level 1 before using Level 2. Do not adjust spacing to change where on the page a heading falls, even if it would be the last line on a page.
The Title Page
When you are ready to write, and after having read these instructions completely, you can delete these directions and start typing. The formatting should stay the same. You will also need to change the items on the title page. Fill in your own title, name, course, college, instructor, and date. List the college to which the course belongs, such as College of Theology, College of Business, or College of Humanities and Social Sciences. GCU uses three letters.

On-screen Graphic: A few minutes have passed since the HSP’s most recent
meeting with John regarding the status of his visitation rights, and she sits alone
in her office reflecting on her thoughts about the case and, specifically, her
ethical requirements as part of her role as a HSP.
On-screen Visual: The HSP sits alone at the table in the coffee shop and reflects
on her meeting with John.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – Here I have this client, John, who’s charged with
domestic violence against his boys’ mother. Normally I’d consider this a clear
signal of a possible threat.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – The safety and well-being of the children is always
paramount in any case, but knowing John’s story and circumstances of his
criminal charge and his history as a teacher, coach, and father to these two
young boys, I can’t help but to feel some bit of sympathy for him. He hasn’t had
any previous history of violence or conflicts with law enforcement. The guy just
wants to reconnect with his children after having been away from them for more
than 2 weeks.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – It seems to me that if John’s wife, Chahana, had a
better handle on her own personal situation all of this could have been avoided. I
mean she was in bed with his cousin. Anybody would be in a fit of rage if they
came home to that.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – Let’s take step back here. I have enough experience
with this to know there are no simple stories or simple solutions in this field.
That’s one of the challenges I enjoy about this job. Also, I have to make sure
that I am not letting personal values and emotions cloud my professional
judgment.
HSP: (thinking to herself) – What’s in the best interest of my client and his
family? What can I do in the immediate future to assist this family with their
current situation?

1. Prepare a 5 to 8 minute speech giving information about a topic. (Do not take sides on a controversial issue.)
2. You may use four note cards with key words or phrases—front of cards only. Do not write out your speech. Show me the notecards after your speech.
3. Three references are required from books, magazines, newspapers and/or interviews. These references must be cited in your speech. Do not use Wikipedia as a source. Use academic sources for two of your sources if possible. These references will be listed according to American Psychological Association, Modern Language Association, or Turabian Citation Guides in your bibliography in your outline.
4. You must use a visual aid in your speech such as the item you are discussing, a handout, picture, etc. Do not pass any items around before or while you speak.
5. If you do a demonstration speech, observe the following guidelines:
a. Demonstrate how to do something you know how to do well. (Hobbies, cooking, musical instruments, medical or first aid procedures, sports, gardening, sewing, etc.)
b. You may not bring any weapons (including arrows), alcoholic beverages, blood products, needles, drugs, explosives, or highly flammable materials.
c. You should demonstrate how to do something that not everyone may already know how to do. (No popcorn, sandwiches, Kool-Aid, cake mixes, etc.)
d. If you show how to cook something, keep the time limits in mind. Assemble the ingredients, and bring a finished product for the class to sample. Do not make anything which uses a raw egg in the finished product. Also, bring any necessary plates, napkins, forks, serving utensils, etc. Limit the use of an electric mixer or blender to 10-15 seconds.
e. If you show how to do a craft, be sure your demonstration can be seen by everyone. It may be necessary to make an enlarged model to use for demonstration purposes. For example, you might punch holes in a piece of poster board to simulate counted cross stitch fabric. Be sure to bring a finished product to show.
f. If you need another person to assist you in some way with your demonstration, keep the following things in mind:
-you must do all the talking
-you must practice with your assistant so you do not have to give him or her instructions during the speech
-your assistant should remain at the front of the room only for the time he or she is needed in the demonstration.
g. You must continue to talk about the subject matter while you work. There must be no dead air. For example, if you are demonstrating how to braid hair, you must continue to talk to us as you work.

The purpose of this study was to analyze a nationally representative sample of families referred
to Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies, the National Survey of Child and Adolescent
Weil-Being, to examine the association between maternal depression and parenting practices
over a 36-month follow-up period.Three hypotheses were tested: (1) Depressed mothers are'
more likely to demonstrate harsh parenting than are nondepressed mothers; (2) depressed
mothers are more likely to demonstrate neglectful parenting than are nondepressed mothers;
and (3) depressed mothers are more likely to demonstrate emotional maltreatment than are
nondepressed mothers. The interaction between depression and time was also analyzed for
each parenting practice to determine how changes in maternal depression affected changes in
parenting. The sample for this study was 1,536 mother-child dyads in which the child was age
three to 10 years and remained in the home after a CPS investigation. Depression remained
high across time points and was associated with increased risk of emotional maltreatment and
neglect over a 36-inonth period. In addition, self-reported emotional maltreatment remained

aternal depression, a critical public
health concern, is prevalent among
mothers referred to Child Protective
Services (CPS) agencies. In fact, nearly a quarter of
adults entering the child welfare system meet the
diagnostic criteria for a major depressive episode
in the preceding 12 months (U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, Administration on
Children.Youth and Families [HHS, ACYF], 2005),
compared with only 7% of adults in the general
population (Kessler, Chiu, Demier, & Walters, 2005).
Furthermore, w ômen have an increased likelihood
of experiencing depression compared with men
(Kessler et al., 2003), and women exposed to a
high number of chronic Stressors—as many women
referred to CPS agencies are—are three times more
likely than women with less exposure to Stressors to
experience maternal depression (Orr,James, Burns,
& Thompson, 1989). Given that women comprise
the vast majority of primary caregivers among the
child welfare population (HHS, ACYF, 2005), it is
important to understand how maternal depression
affects outcomes after a CPS referral.
The high rate of maternal depression in the child
welfare system is a concern given its influence on
parenting practices. Symptoms of depression may
impede a woman's capacity to provide care for her
children, placing her at risk to engage in neglectful
parentin.

One will be an example of the ways that the advertisement perpetuates ideas about race and/or ethnicity in a negative, prejudicial, or stereotypical way. Use as few words as you can to make your statements. This will allow you more room to develop your great ideas!
Avoid repetition and redundancy
of both ideas and words. This is the issue that I usually subtract the most points for, so take care.
For example, when you edit your papers, make sure that you don’t say “Cool Herc is widely accepted as the originator of hip hop”, and then two sentences later, “As Cool Herc is the originator of hip hop…”. See how these two are the same idea? If the reader already has the information, repeating it just takes up space. Another thing to avoid is using the same word multiple times in quick succession. For example: “I found it exciting to listen to the this music. Eri B. has an exciting tone to his voice. When I hear how he flows when he strings words together, I feel excited.” See how ‘excitement’ occurs three times in three sentences? Here’s another more subtle example: “He used the turntable as a way to switch songs seamlessly, using the scratch method to cover up the different beats that were used in each song.” In this example, the word ‘use’ occurs three times in the same sentence! Because it’s a less emotional word, it might be harder to catch, but it’s just as problematic.
I like to see ‘I’ statements.
I find that turning the focus on yourself (especially when we are dealing with sensitive issues and incorporating personal experience, as I encourage) is a great way to avoid generalizing groups and ideas. If your statement is clearly from your perspective, then I as a reader can empathize with your position. If you use lots of ‘we as a generalized group of people act and feel this specific way’, it makes me wonder what research you’ve done, what data points you have, and how many people you have interviewed in order to have that knowledge.
Going off of the previous expectation:

If you do make a generalized statement about a situation, back it up with details. Show the research. Reference or quote the authors who initially made the observations and put their work into context. If you tell me that Cool Herc is largely agreed to be the originator of hip hop, tell me why and give examples.
For example, something with detail and context would be: “Although Jamaican soundsystem culture is at the roots of hip hop, Cool Herc was the first to create tracks sourced from James Brown, using the funkier, harder beats that we’ve come to associate with hip hop today.” See how this gives specific details and context on either end of the statement that Cool Herc was the first person to make hip hop?
