Imagine a world where every day scientists create human beings, cultivate them for a week, and then
destroy them. This scenario sounds vaguely familiar to the creation of Frankenstein in Mary
Shelley's book Frankenstein. The difference between the creation of Frankenstein and the creation of
human beings is that the latter has already become true as scientist are creating and destroying
embryos. Scientist today even in the United States are creating human embryos and then destroying
them when performing stem cell research, but the government does not fund these scientists.

Would you hold back your government's money from funding stem cell research if it was your child
desperately waiting for a cure from stem cell research?
I understand that conservatives believe life begins at conception; thus, stem cell research is murder.
However, there are several thousands of embryos each year discarded from left over in–vitro
fertilization banks and aborted fetuses that could be used for stem cell research. These embryos
are already destined for destruction, so why not use them for a better purpose? They can be used
to save many lives. I do not agree with abortion; however, since abortion is legal in the United
States, some good should come out of this terrible act. If the embryos are merely discarded, no
good has come from their terrible end of life. Yet if the embryos destined for destruction are used
for stem cell research, they could provide some other people with the blessing of a healthy life.
You could think of these embryos as little Jesuses giving their lives so that others have live a
blessed life.
Since there are thousands of embryos left over from in–vitro fertilization banks and aborted fetuses,
it is unnecessary for scientists to create embryos solely for the purpose of destruction. Scientists in

King show). For the advancement of science, stem cells are infinitely valuable, especially when
considering all the potential applications in the field of medicine. Stem cell usage is a very

Pluripotent stem cells can create the possibility for a renewable source of replacement tissues and
cells, which means a large number of diseases could be cured and treated.
This includes debilitating diseases, Parkinson, Alzheimer, Leukemia, Down syndrome, muscular
dystrophies, retinal degeneration, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes,

They only have specific functions, and can no longer do anything besides those functions. However,

surrounding them are. The different types of stem cells have the ability to repair many classes of

and extraembryonic tissues (13) these are deemed 'totipotent', while cells that generate embryonic
and cannot generate extraembryonic tissues are deemed 'pluripotent'. Induced cells that are in a
differentiable state, pluripotent, are the cells chosen to advance medicine. Cells selected for
induced pluripotency cannot be terminally differentiated, as these cells lose their ability to be
developed into other cells types (14). Pluripotency can be induced by the study of embryonic stem
cells. These cells express factors (Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4, c–Myc), deemed Yamanaka factors (15) and
described as such in this review. There are currently four main methods for delivering these factors
including viral vectors, DNA–based induction, RNA molecules and recombinant proteins (fig 1.)

limited capacity to differentiate and they are compatible with adult tissue, you can only obtain a
small amount of cells. An alternative would be obtaining stem cell from the umbilical cord, given

So basically I'm gonna summarize an article and it's about the genetic profiling of putative breast
cancer stem cells from pleural effusions. The authors of this article used this opportunity and found
out that pleural effusions were great opportunities to be able to study metastasis and for isolating
stem cells. The doctors basically isolated the cancer stem cells(csc) and the non cancer stem
cells(non–csc) and were able to derive how fast these stem cells were able to form. At the moment

So scientists basically separate all the cells from a clump and let them float in some liquid. After
a while the fast developing cancer cells will begin to duplicate at a fast rate while normal cells
would do that at a slower rate. Scientists later then sorted out the CSCs (cancer stem cells) and
tested them for ALDH1. But most of these tests came back with some negative results as they had
been detected in some pleural cells but only had a median detection of 2.7%. So they then used a
CD44+CD24 detection sample and they were able to evaluate 13 out of 18 pleural effusions (72%).

What exactly are stem cells? How can the use of these cells benefit us and how exactly
are they acquired? Believe it or not stem cells have been in play when it comes to medicine since
the 1950's in France (Steenblock 1). This topic is very controversial and I surmise that it is
strongly due to the lack of knowledge when it comes to stem cells and their importance. I,
myself, am very intrigued by stem cells and my goal is to define what they are and layout facts
pertaining to them.
This paper will be divided up into three main sections: what are stem cells and the
different kinds; why stem cells are important and how they are medically beneficial; how stem
cells are acquired and used for treatment. The last section will be followed up by the conclusion.
There is a lot of information pertaining to this, therefore each section will begin very broad and
finish very concise, much like a funnel.
So, what are stem cells? According to Kirkpatrick, stem cells are an essential part of the
broader field of regenerative medicine and are pertinent in preventing and treating diseases that
are, as of right now, incurable (Kirkpatrick 1). Now let's look at the definition given to them. In
