million to India’s forced sterilization
program, which has killed many

Many women are not told that they are
being sterilized. They are treated as

bounty.

A 2010 DFID report said that the purpose of
their programs was to reduce greenhouse
emissions.
One doctor did 53 sterilizations in just two
hours by torchlight and botched all 53
operations. Women lay in agony on a filthy
straw-covered floor. He received a bounty for
each sterilization. He did not even sterilize his
instruments between operations.
Bribery and threats are routine; women are
offered $11 and a sari if they are sterilized, or
entered jn a lottery where one woman out of
hundreds or thousands sterilized might win a
car.
