3. A scouting tradition since 1953, the Pinewood
Derby gives scouts the opportunity to build a model
car from scratch and race it under supervised
competition. The official Pinewood Derby car kit
consists of a regulation block of wood, four plastic
tires, four metal axles, and numbered decals for
decoration. Using these raw materials, scouts
attempt to construct an aerodynamic racer that will
coast down a ramp faster than its competitors. A
particularly fast Pinewood Derby car can reach
speeds approaching 20 miles per hour.
4. Cub Scout Pack 280C held the first Pinewood
Derby competition at the Manhattan Beach
Scout House near Los Angeles, California. The
event was the brainchild of Pack 280
Cubmaster Don Murphy. Publicized by Boy’s
Life magazine in October of 1954, the
Pinewood Derby went on to become a scouting
institution. Over the years, Cub Scouts have
created close to 100 million Pinewood Derby
cars.
