1. Cinematography:
As you can see in the background there is a shot of a explosion while Iron
Man is casually walking away from it. This is interesting because it creates
tension and suspense making me question what caused the explosion?
Furthermore, it is a long shot which allows me to view the surroundings and
the effect the explosion has. As the film opening goes on the background
becomes blurring allowing Iron man to become the man focus which is really effective making the character look
fearless and heroic.
Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene shows a establishing shot of a landscape as
Iron Man glides over it. This suggests that this location could be
somewhere in the middle east due to its surroundings. I find this
Mise En Scene interesting because it is a good location to film a
action movie as there is a lot of space for action.
Editing:
In the beginning of the film opening you can hear a funky motivational type of music, it is a non diegetic sound as it
links with what is appearing on the screen. There are many various types of objects and surroundings which links to the
music in the film opening such as how Iron Man is testing out his outfit to see if it works. This is interesting because it
allows me to see what he is doing but also inspiring me and wanting him to figure out the problem due to the beat of
the music which also engages the audience as well. There is no diegetic sounds such as beeping cars or sounds of
explosion as it only shows images of what is going on.
2. Facial Expression:
The first impression you get about the main
protagonist is that he is represented as a positive and
enlightened character. However due to the scar on
his face and the grin he has on it suggests that he
could be a risk taker.
Appearance:
This character is represented as a smart formal person who
probably has authority and power due to his stance and clothes is
he wearing. Also he is coming off a plane or private jet which
could suggest that he must be a high class citizen or someone
special as we can see the guards in the background. Furthermore
due to the low angle shot, from our perspective it gives us a point
of view that this character is upper class. Due to his appearance
you can tell that he tries to look at his best and seems to be a
proud character.
Power of authority:
Due to how he is sitting in the chair the audience can
automatically assume that this character is dangerous as he
is also holding a gun pointing at a citizen. The character is
represented as a treacherous person due to the scruffy
clothes he is wearing and the beard which could suggest this
has something to do with terrorism. The long shot shows the
surroundings which makes the audience suspense and
threatened due to the victim’s facial expression.
3. There are many various settings throughout the film opening. One of the main settings is the
main protagonists house. As you can see from the images below, the first impression you realise
is that this house is extremely big and beautiful indicating that the main protagonist is rich and
wealthy. The location of the setting is nowhere near the city making the audience assume that
he has his own land and it is also a high angle shot which allows the audience to get a better
perspective of the house. This is important as it allows the audience to realise that this setting
could be shown more than once throughout the movie and especially in specific scenes.
Another setting in the film opening is a
establishing shot of the city. This could
suggest that Iron Man affiliates with
the city which could be a main setting
throughout the film. This is important
to the target audience as it could be
significant to the narrative based on
the film opening.
4. There are many narratives throughout the film
opening which suggest that this genre is a action
film, such as the explosion in the image on the
left. However there are also some enigma codes
which has got the audience thinking. For
examples:
What does the villain
want as he has the
hostage for leverage?
What will happen to
the hostage?
Enigma codes
Why has the villain
got the citizen
hostage?
Why is there a explosion in
the background?
These enigma codes are important because
they create a lot of tension and builds up
suspense to thrill the audience. Also another
narrative in the film opening to show that
this film is a action genre is a binary
opposition which is superhero vs. villain. This
is important because it creates a lot of
scenes which have a lot of action in them to
entertain the audience.
