2. VThe masthead of this magazine is Vibe and it is
taking to top space of the front page. Vibe
masthead always takes a thick layer of the top
of the page as the masthead is written on
capital letters, that’s a way for the audience to
recognise the magazine. The masthead is
always found in the same position for all the
Vibe magazine issues. The Vibe magazine
always changes the colour of the masthead
depending on the cover model ad who is in it
and also depending on what colour the cover
model is wearing so it links to the whole issue.
Just like with this issue, the idea that Nicki
Minaj is wearing mainly white connects with
the white backdrop but her hair colour which is
really bright and is the one thing that stands
out from everything on the front page. The idea
that that cover model is getting all the attention
from the target audience, the use of making the
masthead the same colour as the cover model’s
hair is so it get’s all the attention equally. The
masthead is being covered as the cover model
is overlapping on top of it but the audience
would still recognise the magazine for the
position and the font of the masthead.
MASTHEAD
3. VFor this front cover for the Vibe magazine, the
model on the front cover for the full bleed
image is Nicki Minaj. She is one of the biggest
R&B singers of all time, she is known for her
appearance an her hip-hop R&B music, she is
usually always portrayed as a ‘sexy’ figure on
magazines depending on the audience. Her
appearance usually attracts males rather than
females, however on this front page, she is
being visualised as a queen by her outfit and by
the obvious crown that she is wearing. She is
portraying the fact that she is one of the most
known R&B artists by her music and her
success, that could be one of the reason of why
she’s posing the way she is and because of the
idea that the image is taking the visual idea of
looking like a queen. The full bleed image has a
contrast with the masthead, by the colour of
Nicki Minaj’s hair as they both a connection,
because the Vibe magazine is an R&B music
magazine the use of the orange hair and orange
masthead have a connection for the audience
to identify who is the cover model, as she’s
known for being an R&B artist.

4. VThis shot is a mid-shot that has been used on
the front cover for this Vibe’s magazine issue.
This shot for the front page would of have to be
captured on a studio as it seems to be using a
white backdrop with studio lighting involved.
The backdrop colour coordinates with the cover
model’s outfit, by the use of the colour white.
Also the use of the silver and glitter coordinates
with the crown and the use of jewellery which
automatically refers to the idea of Nicki Minaj
being representing a queen. The use of pose
also links of her being a powerful queen, which
would mainly link to her R&B music, as by the
time that this magazine issue was released,
Nicki Minaj was and still is one of the solo
female artists that still represent the R&B music
industry by her music, albums and singles. She
is one of those solo artist that would be
represented as ‘sexy’ on any music and nor
music magazine, however in this front cover she
is not being portrayed as ‘sexy’ but something
beyond her appearance as per usual to being
represented as something more stronger and
powerful.
MISE-EN-SCENE
5. VAs a layout for a Vibe music magazine front
cover, it attends to show the information clear
and busy but by not adding too much on the
cover lines, this would be by the use of the
large font on the cover lines, as the masthead is
also taking a lot of the space on the top of the
front cover. The Vibe magazine also uses a lot
the use of different colour schemes when it
comes to publish a new issue, with the idea
that the colour scheme is dedicated to that
specific cover model. The use of the colour for
this issue seems to be; orange, white and black.
The use of the bright colours link to the idea of
the magazine being dedicated to the use of the
cover model being shinning and bright to
attract all the attention from the audience. The
use of the make-up also reflects on how the
artist is being presented and the use of the pink
on the make-up associates with the idea of the
artist showing her ‘feminine’ side as the use of
the colour pink on her make-up connects with
the use of pink on her nails as they both seem
to be same tone of pink. This makes her seem
the kind of style of ‘hip-hop’ as it describes her
own music; hip-hop R&B.
LAYOUT
6. VAs the typography of this front cover, its all
depending on the use of the different font
compared to the one for the masthead, so the
front page doesn’t all loo the same and it looks
a bit different and easier for the audience to
seek information and to be easier to attract
different attention as the use of the pose of the
cover model, looks like as if she’s trying to ask
for attention from the audience, as she looks
like she’s standing out from the front page of
the magazine. On this front cover, there has
been used at least two different font styles.
Usually a magazine uses two different font
styles. The idea of this is to divide the cover
lines information in half, so it doesn’t all look
repetitive with the use of the same font style
and the use of colour. The use of the size font
for the cover lines, seem to take a lot of space
from the front cover, even though there is not a
lot of information on the cover lines which
associates with the idea of using less and make
it bigger to take as much of the space provided
on the front cover.
TYPOGRAPHY
7. V The first primary cover line is the most
important cover line as on this front cover it has
the use of the main colour that was also used
on the masthead. The primary cover lines,
include the most important information about
the magazine, and on this front cover it also has
information included about the cover model on
the front page. I believe this is necessary so it
would be easier to identify the artist on the
front cover. The idea that the use of the colour
orange on the artist names links straight to the
masthead and to the artist as they all link
together by the use of the colour orange.
On the secondary cover line is bit different from
the primary cover line. The difference is that it
would either include more information or less
compared to the primary cover lines, which in
this front cover it includes more on the
secondary compared to the primary cover lines.
The use of the secondary cover lines is to give
extra information that is not provided on the
primary cover lines, as it also has different
artists mentioned.

COVER LINE
8. VWhat register simply means, is the tone of the
magazine and what type of language is being
used to communicate with the audience (the
magazine with the primary and secondary
audience). The tone of language that is used on
the front cover is informal use of text on the
cover lines by the Vibe magazine having a clear
idea that their magazine audience is older
teenagers, especially boys and girls (but at a
lower percentage). For the audience to use the
magazine as part of their identity on the uses
and gratifications, the way the magazine itself
gives the information to the audience would of
have been in an informal way, which would be a
way of the audience communicating with one
another and promoting the magazine further,
not noticing the audience itself would be
promoting the magazine and the magazine
target audience would get wider and bigger for
the magazine becoming even more know than
what it already is.
