So many times the inherent answer of business is not to know the trend, instead it is what the
demographic of customers are asking for? This is the reason why major industries from fashion
to restaurants cater to the various demographics offering an array of unique items for its
demographic, followed by answering what is the trend. It is essential for a business to survey its
customers on a regular basis and understand their likes, dislikes, wants and needs. If this is not
done then the products or services being offered will plateau on its demographic it is servicing.
Unless the business is strictly Ecommerce, which will be discussed in a later discussion.
A business owner should respond to its target demographic, by understanding and answering
the following questions to analyze its business plan:
1) What is the target age demographic?
2) Is the company serving a unique product or service that can be a scalable through an
alternative marketing plan? (Thinking out of the box)
3) Has the owner of the business evaluated what the customers say about the brand?
4) Does the brand reach its potential for brand recognition in a conversation? (I.E- Starbuck
is immediately associated to coffee, Soda is to Coke or Pepsi, Apple is to technology)
a. What are ways to reach the customers psyche that is not being done already
through marketing, public relations or advertising?
5) Define the brand or companies message in all portals? (Social media, the website, the
store, etc)
Keep your message consistent to all marketing or advertising efforts, this will build-up the
brand and image; be creative in creating a campaign, keep it simple and short. Always ask if this
is a memorable message to the customers, for instance men’s fashion line providing tailored
suits: we speak bespoke at company X with a follow-up question what is your bespoke suit
tonight? Ideal for an advertising campaign or comparison image to a competitor company. It is
something playful that utilizes a traditional word individuals recognize.
