Marya Gavrilovna falls in love with a young officer but her parents disapprove. During a blizzard on the night they plan to elope, Marya makes it to the church but her lover does not arrive. Years later, Marya meets Colonel Burmin and they develop feelings for each other. However, Burmin reveals he is already married after being caught in a blizzard years ago and unknowingly married a woman in a village church. Marya then reveals she was that bride, meaning they are already married to each other.
