2. Topic/Goal My wellness goal was to eat the recommended amount of fruit each day (3 pieces). I planned on reaching that goal by putting up reminders on the fridge and by preparing my fruit the day before (cutting it up, washing it, etc). I picked this goal because “fruit” is the one category on the food pyramid that I don’t get enough of. If I eat the recommended amount of fruit each day not only will I be choosing a healthy snack, I will be allowing my body to have more vitamins and minerals (and water depending on the fruit). While working on this goal I addressed the primary level of prevention. I was attempting to reduce/prevent any health risks before they become a problem.
3. Influential Factors Predisposing Factors: I am aware that fruits have a lot of vitamins and minerals in them. My mom started making fruit salads and when I was home I would have that for a snack. I would also bring containers of it back to my apartment with me for while I was at school. Enabling Factors: Positive: The grocery store isn’t even a mile away from my apartment so it is easy for me to stop in and pick up some fruit that is on sale. Negative: Fruit is getting more and more expensive. Reinforcing Factors: Like I mentioned before, my mom has started making fruit salad. My parents have also realized that they need to include fruit more in their diets so we’ve all been working on it together; I have their support. Barriers: One of the main things that hindered my progress was time. Sometimes I didn’t have time to run to the grocery store to grab some fruit. And cost was another barrier. Fruit is expensive so I needed to buy what was on sale a lot of times. Or I could buy canned fruit which was way less expensive.
4. Helpful Resources My family were my main supporters. They also realized they needed to include fruit in their diets more so we all worked on this goal together.
5. Evaluation I met my goal 46 out of 62 days that I was recording on a spreadsheet. That means that I was 75% successful (see chart on next slide). I cannot say that I was 100% successful at my goal but I did make an improvement and I changed a bad snacking habbit to a positive one. I am going to continue to keep my notes on the fridge so I keep making healthy snack choices, fruit choices in this case. I’ve learned that making changes is hard but if it is a change your making for a positive reason its much easier. It also helps when you have friends and family supporting (or doing it with) you.
