Louis Jolliet was born in 1645 in Quebec, Canada. He grew up on Ile d'Orleans where he learned about trade. He studied at a Jesuit school where he learned writing, mathematics, philosophy, and Latin. Despite his Jesuit education, he was adventurous and wanted to explore. He is famous for being the first European to visit the Mississippi River along with Marquette. Through his observations, he determined that the Mississippi River flows into the Gulf of Mexico rather than the Pacific Ocean. He explored many rivers in Canada and made important maps.
