1. CA 32 USS NEW ORLEANS COCKATOO DOCK SYDNEY HARBOUR JANUARY TO MARCH 1943
SLIDE PRESENTATION(tamamshud.blogspot.com)
2. THE SOMERTON MAN
CONNECTION
• The Somerton Man code page contained the
letter Q within which was found a string of
letters and numbers in micro written code
• The string read as follows: J232 X RAN X 35 (or
33) X CA X 32
• These coded letters refer to the The J232
HMAS Deloraine Royal Australian Navy, CA 32
USS New Orleans Ut is possible that the 33
refers to the USS Portland in dock at the same
time as the New Orleans
• These two ships were only together once
during WW2 on Sunday March 7th 1943 in
Sydney Harbour
• The Deloraine acted as a screen for the New
Orleans as she steamed her way back to Puget
Sound following extensive repairs undertaken
at Sydney's Cockatoo Island dockyard.
3. THE FOLLOWING SLIDES
SHOW VARIOUS VIEWS OF
THE DAMAGE AND
REPAIRS TO THE USS NEW
ORLEANS.
THE ENTIRE BOW WAS
BLOWN AWAY
FOLLOWING A TORPEDOE
ATTACK AT THE BATTLE OF
TASSAFARONGA IN
NOVEMBER 1942
4. This slide supposedly shows
relatively minor damage to the
bow of the New Orleans after
the Tassafaronga Battle. It is
believed to be a propaganda
photograph, the structure and
size of the ship does not match
the New Orleans.
5. This image shows the actual
damage to the New Orleans.
The ship had lost 150 feet of
the bow section in the
attack. Ut had to be sallied
backwards from the Islands
to Sydney Harbour.
6. The USS New Orleans in
dock at Cockatoo Island
under repair. In the
background can be seen
the USS Portland also
heavily damaged at the
stern.
11. USS NEW ORLEANS Underway March 7th 1943. The
HMAS Deloraine escorted her out to sea. This image is
believed to have been taken by an RAAF aircraft in the
area of Sydney Harbour that day.
12. This is a copy of the Somerton
Man code page. The letter Q on
the 4th line contains information
that only someone who saw or
had details of the departure of
the New Orleans could have
known.
The other letters in the code
also contain micro letters and
numbers.
